Abstract:This survey is mainly intended for non-specialists, though we try to include many recent developments that may interest the experts as well. We want to study "good" finite subsets of the unit sphere. To consider "what is good" is a part of our problem. We start with the definition of spherical t-designs on Sn-1 in R-n. After discussing some important examples, we focus on tight spherical t-designs on Sn-1. Tight t-designs have good combinatorial properties, but they rarely exist. So, we are interested in the finite subsets on Sn-1, which have properties similar to tight t-designs from the various viewpoints of algebraic combinatorics. For example, rigid t-designs, universally optimal t-codes (configurations), as well as finite sets which admit the structure of an association scheme, are among them. We will discuss various results on the existence and the non-existence of special spherical t-designs, as well as general spherical t-designs, and their constructions. We will discuss the relations between spherical t-designs and many other branches of mathematics. For example: by considering the spherical designs which are orbits of a finite group in the real orthogonal group O(n), we get many connections with group theory; by considering those which are shells of Euclidean lattices, we get many unexpected connections with number theory, such as modular forms and Lehmer's conjecture about the zeros of the Ramanujan tau function. Spherical t-designs and Euclidean t-designs are special cases of cubature formulas in approximation theory, and thus we get many connections with analysis and statistics, and in particular with orthogonal polynomials, and moment problems. Moreover, Delsarte's linear programming method and many recent generalizations, including the work of Musin and the subsequent progress in using semidefinite programming, have strong connections with geometry (in particular sphere packing problems) and the theory of optimizations. These various connections explain the reason of the charm of algebraic combinatorics on spheres. At the same time, these theories of spherical t-designs and related topics have strong roots in the developments of algebraic combinatorics in general, which was started as Delsarte theory of codes and designs in the framework of association schemes. Abstract:This talk is based on joint work with Etsuko Bannai. The concept of spherical t-design, which is a flnite subset of the unit sphere, was introduced by Delsarte-Goethals-Seidel (1977). The concept of Euclidean t-design, which is a two step generalization of spherical design in the sense that it is a flnite weighted subset of Euclidean space, by Neumaier-Seidel (1988). We flrst review these two concepts and examples, as well as the concept of tight t-design, i.e., the one whose cardinality reaches the natural lower bound. We are interested in t-designs (spherical or Euclidean) which are either tight or close to tight. As is well known by Delsarte-Goethals-Seidel (1977), in the study of spherical t- designs and in particular of those which are either tight or close to tight, association schemes play important roles. The main purpose of this talk is to show that in the study of Euclidean t-designs and in particular of those which are either tight or close to tight, coherent conflgurations play important roles. Here, coherent conflguration is a purely combinatorial concept deflned by D. G. Higman, and is obtained by axiomatizing the properties of general, not necessarily transitive, permutation groups, in the same way as association scheme was obtained by axiomatizing the properties of transitive permutation groups. As an application of this general theory, we discuss the current status of our research to try to classify Euclidean 4-designs (X;w) on two concentric spheres S = S1 ( S2 centered at the origin whose weight function is constant on each X \ Si(i = 1;2) and each X \ Si(i = 1;2) is at most 2-distance set. We will also give two new families of feasible parameters for coherent conflgurations, one family is obtained from Euclidean tight 4-designs on two concentric spheres and another family is obtained from non-tight Euclidean 4-designs.

Abstract:According to Delsarte, Goethals, and Seidel, a nonempty subset X of the set of unit vectors in the real vector space Rd of dimension d is called a tight spherical t-design if (i) Σα∈X W(α) = 0 for all homogeneous harmonic polynomials W(α) in Rd of degree 1,2,…,t, and (ii) |X|=(d+e−1d−1)+(d+e−2d−1), |X|=2(d+e−1d−1) for t = 2e and t = 2e + 1, respectively. In this paper, we show that if t = 2e, e ⩾ 3 or t = 2e + 1, e ⩾ 4, and if there exists a tight spherical t-design, then the dimension d is bounded by a certain function depending only on t.

Abstract:Spherical $t$-design is a finite subset on sphere such that, for any polynomial of degree at most $t$, the average value of the integral on sphere can be replaced by the average value at the finite subset. It is well-known that an equivalent condition of spherical design is given in terms of harmonic polynomials. In this paper, we define a spherical design of harmonic index $t$ from the viewpoint of this equivalent condition, and we give its construction and a Fisher type lower bound on the cardinality. Also we investigate whether there is a spherical design of harmonic index attaining the bound.

Abstract:A spherical t-design is a finite subset X in the unit sphere Sn-1 subset of R-n which replaces the value of the integral on the sphere of any polynomial of degree at most t by the average of the values of the polynomial on the finite subset X. Generalizing the concept of spherical designs, Neumaier and Seidel (1988) defined the concept of Euclidean t-design in R-n as a finite set X in R-n for which Sigma(p)(i=1)(w(X-i)/(\S-i\)) integral(Si) f (x)d sigma(i)(x) = Sigma(x is an element of X) w(x)f (x) holds for any polynomial f (x) of deg(f) <= t, where {S-i, 1 <= i <= p} is the set of all the concentric spheres centered at the origin and intersect with X, X-i = X boolean AND S-i, and w : X --> R->0 is a weight function of X. (The case of X subset of Sn-1 and with a constant weight corresponds to a spherical t-design.) Neumaier and Seidel (1988), Delsarte and Seidel (1989) proved the (Fisher type) lower bound for the cardinality of a Euclidean 2e-design. Let Y be a subset of R-n and let P-e(Y) be the vector space consisting of all the polynomials restricted to Y whose degrees are at most e. Then from the arguments given by Neumaier-Seidel and Delsarte-Seidel, it is easy to see that \X\ >= dim(P-e(S)) holds, where S = boolean OR S-p(i=1)i. The actual lower bounds proved by Delsarte and Seidel holds, where S = UP are better than this in some special cases. However as designs on S, the bound dim(P-e(S)) is natural and universal. In this point of view, we call a Euclidean 2e-design X with \X\ = dim(P-e(S)) a tight 2e-design on p concentric spheres. Moreover if dim(P-e(S)) = dim(P-e(R-n))(= ((n+e)(e))) holds, then we call X a Euclidean tight 2e-design. We study the properties of tight Euclidean 2e-designs by applying the addition formula on the Euclidean space. Furthermore, we give the classification of Euclidean tight 4-designs with constant weight. It is possible to regard our main result as giving the classification of rotatable designs of degree 2 in R-n in the sense of Box and Hunter (1957) with the possible minimum size ((n+2)(2)). We also give examples of nontrivial Euclidean tight 4-designs in R-2 with nonconstant weight, which give a counterexample to the conjecture of Neumaier and Seidel (1988) that there are no nontrivial Euclidean tight 2e-designs even for the nonconstant weight case for 2e >= 4.

Abstract:In analogy to classical spherical t-design points, we introduce the concept of t-design curves on the sphere. This means that the line integral along a t-design curve integrates polynomials of degree t exactly. For low degrees we construct explicit examples. We also derive lower asymptotic bounds on the lengths of t-design curves. Our main results prove the existence of asymptotically optimal t-design curves in the Euclidean 2-sphere and the existence of t-design curves in the d-sphere.

Abstract:Relative $t$-designs in the $n$-dimensional hypercube $\mathcal{Q}_n$ are equivalent to weighted regular $t$-wise balanced designs, which generalize combinatorial $t$-$(n,k,\lambda)$ designs by allowing multiple block sizes as well as weights. Partly motivated by the recent study on tight Euclidean $t$-designs on two concentric spheres, in this paper we discuss tight relative $t$-designs in $\mathcal{Q}_n$ supported on two shells. We show under a mild condition that such a relative $t$-design induces the structure of a coherent configuration with two fibers. Moreover, from this structure we deduce that a polynomial from the family of the Hahn hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials must have only integral simple zeros. The Terwilliger algebra is the main tool to establish these results. By explicitly evaluating the behavior of the zeros of the Hahn polynomials when they degenerate to the Hermite polynomials under an appropriate limit process, we prove a theorem which gives a partial evidence that the non-trivial tight relative $t$-designs in $\mathcal{Q}_n$ supported on two shells are rare for large $t$.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the existence of a spherical $t$-design formed by adding extra points to an arbitrarily given point set on the sphere and, subsequently, deduce the existence of nested spherical designs. Estimates on the number of required points are also given. For the case that the given point set is a spherical $t_1$-design such that $t_1 < t$ and the number of points is of optimal order $t_1^d$, we show that the upper bound of the total number of extra points and given points for forming nested spherical $t$-design is of order $t^{2d+1}$. A brief discussion concerning the optimal order in nested spherical designs is also given.

Abstract:Spherical t-designs are Chebyshev-type averaging sets on the d-sphere S^d which are exact for polynomials of degree at most t. This concept was introduced in 1977 by Delsarte, Goethals, and Seidel, who also found the minimum possible size of such designs, in particular, that the number of points in a 3-design on S^d must be at least n>=2d+2. In this paper we give explicit constructions for spherical 3-designs on S^d consisting of n points for d=1 and n>=4; d=2 and n=6; 8; >= 10; d=3 and n=8; >=10; d = 4 and n = 10; 12; >= 14; d>=5 and n>=5(d+1)/2 odd or n>=2d+2 even. We also provide some evidence that 3-designs of other sizes do not exist.

Abstract:Motivated by the similarities between the theory of spherical $t$-designs and that of $t$-designs in $Q$-polynomial association schemes, we study two versions of relative $t$-designs, the counterparts of Euclidean $t$-designs for $P$- and/or $Q$-polynomial association schemes. We develop the theory based on the Terwilliger algebra, which is a noncommutative associative semisimple $\mathbb{C}$-algebra associated with each vertex of an association scheme. We compute explicitly the Fisher type lower bounds on the sizes of relative $t$-designs, assuming that certain irreducible modules behave nicely. The two versions of relative $t$-designs turn out to be equivalent in the case of the Hamming schemes. From this point of view, we establish a new algebraic characterization of the Hamming schemes.

Abstract:This work aims to build a bridge between probability methods and finite element methods. It starts with considering probability distributions supported in an interval [a,b], which incorporate the traditional probability distributions defined on the whole real space as limit cases on the one hand, lead to a type of spherical probability models with wide potential applications on the other hand. This type of probability has scaling and symmetry feature, and sufficient conditions under which a density function can be generated through discrete polynomial spectrum are given in this work followed by concrete examples. The density function ρ obtained in this way has the advantage of being positive definite. Computer based numerical simulation shows that the theoretically verified criteria for probability distribution are almost optimal with respect to our testing examples. After the establishment of an approximation theorem in L1 space, we propose a probabilistic Galerkin scheme that can be either continuous or discontinuous, which is potentially useful to asymptotically solve some PDEs on the sphere locally and globally.

Abstract:In algebraic combinatorics, the first step of the classification of interesting objects is usually to find all their feasible parameters. The feasible parameters are often integral solutions of some complicated Diophantine equations, which cannot be solved by known methods. In this paper, we develop a method to solve such Diophantine equations in 3 variables. We demonstrate it by giving a classification of finite subsets that are spherical 2-distance sets and spherical {4, 2, 1}-designs at the same time.
Spherical Distributions on the De Sitter Space and their Spectral Singularities

Abstract:A spherical distribution is an eigendistribution of the Laplace-Beltrami operator with certain invariance on the de Sitter space. Let G'=O(1,n;R) be the Lorentz group and H' = O(1,n-1;R) be its subgroup. The authors Olafsson and Sitiraju have constructed the spherical distributions, which are $H'$-invariant, as boundary values of some sesquiholomorphic kernels. In this survey article we will explore the connections of these kernels with reflection positivity and representations of the group G = SO(1,n;R)_e, which is the connected component of the Lorentz group. We will also discuss the singularities of spherical distributions in terms of their wavefront set.

Abstract:A finite subset $Y$ on the unit sphere $S^{n-1} \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ is called a spherical design of harmonic index $t$, if the following condition is satisfied: $\sum_{\mathbf{x}\in Y}f(\mathbf{x})=0$ for all real homogeneous harmonic polynomials $f(x_1,\ldots,x_n)$ of degree $t$. Also, for a subset $T$ of $\mathbb{N} = \{1,2,\cdots \}$, a finite subset $Y \subseteq S^{n-1}$ is called a spherical design of harmonic index $T,$ if $\sum_{\mathbf{x}\in Y}f(\mathbf{x})=0$ is satisfied for all real homogeneous harmonic polynomials $f(x_1,\ldots,x_n)$ of degree $k$ with $k\in T$.In the present paper we first study Fisher type lower bounds for the sizes of spherical designs of harmonic index $t$ (or for harmonic index $T$). We also study `tight' spherical designs of harmonic index $t$ or index $T$. Here `tight' means that the size of $Y$ attains the lower bound for this Fisher type inequality. The classification problem of tight spherical designs of harmonic index $t$ was started by Bannai-Okuda-Tagami (2015), and the case $t = 4$ was completed by Okuda-Yu (2016). In this paper we show the classification (non-existence) of tight spherical designs of harmonic index 6 and 8, as well as the asymptotic non-existence of tight spherical designs of harmonic index $2e$ for general $e\geq 3$. We also study the existence problem for tight spherical designs of harmonic index $T$ for some $T$, in particular, including index $T = \{8,4\}$.

Abstract:We investigate several antipodal spherical designs on which we can choose half of the points, one from each antipodal pair, such that they are balanced at the origin. In particular, root systems of type A, D and E, minimal points of the Leech lattice, and the unique tight 7-design on S^22 are studied.
