Abstract:We analyse local features of the spaces of representations of the fundamental group of a punctured surface in $\mathrm{SU}_2$ equipped with a decoration, namely a choice of a logarithm of the representation at peripheral loops. Such decorated representations naturally arise as monodromies of spherical surfaces with conical points. Among other things, in this paper we determine the smooth locus of such absolute and relative decorated representation spaces: in particular, in the relative case (with few special exceptions) such smooth locus is dense, connected, and exactly consists of non-coaxial representations. The present study sheds some light on the local structure of the moduli space of spherical surfaces with conical points, which is locally modelled on the above-mentioned decorated representation spaces.

Abstract:Any affine map on the (n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space gives rise to a natural map on the n-dimensional sphere whose dynamical aspects are not so well-studied in the literature. We explore the dynamical aspects of these maps by investigating about their distality and expansivity.

Abstract:The S 2 ×R geometry is derived by direct product of the spherical plane S 2 and the real line R. In [9] the third author has determined the geodesic curves, geodesic balls of S 2 ×R space, computed their volume and defined the notion of the geodesic ball packing and its density. Moreover, he has developed a procedure to determine the density of the geodesic ball packing for generalized Coxeter space groups of S 2 ×R and applied this algorithm to them. E. MOLN ´ AR showed in [3], that the homogeneous 3-spaces have a unified interpretation in the projective 3-sphere PS 3 (V 4 ,V 4, R). In our work we shall use this projective model of S 2 ×R geometry and in this manner the geodesic lines, geodesic spheres can be visualized on the Euclidean screen of computer. Furthermore, we shall define the notion of the equidistant surface to two points, determine its equation and visualize it in some cases. We shall also show a possible way of making the computation simpler and obtain the equation of an equidistant surface with more possible geometric meaning. The pictures were made by the Wolfram Mathematica software.

Hyperbolic groups and spherical minimal surfaces

Abstract:Let $M$ be a closed, oriented, negatively curved, $n$-dimensional manifold with fundamental group $\Gamma$. Let $S^\infty$ be the unit sphere in $\ell^2(\Gamma)$, on which $\Gamma$ acts by the regular representation. The spherical volume of $M$ is a topological invariant introduced by Besson-Courtois-Gallot. We show that it is equal to the area of an $n$-dimensional area-minimizing minimal surface inside the ultralimit of $S^\infty/\Gamma$, in the sense of Ambrosio-Kirchheim. Our proof combines the theory of metric currents with a study of limits of the regular representation of torsion-free hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:We study categories associated to a decorated marked surface ${\mathbf {S}}_\bigtriangleup $, which is obtained from an unpunctured marked surface $\mathbf {S}$ by adding a set of decorating points. For any triangulation $\mathbf {T}$ of ${\mathbf {S}}_\bigtriangleup $, let $\Gamma _\mathbf {T}$ be the associated Ginzburg dg algebra. We show that there is a bijection between reachable open arcs in ${\mathbf {S}}_\bigtriangleup $ and the reachable rigid indecomposables in the perfect derived category ${\text {per}}\,\Gamma _\mathbf {T}$. This is the dual of the bijection, between simple closed arcs in ${\mathbf {S}}_\bigtriangleup $ and reachable spherical objects in the 3-Calabi-Yau category ${\mathcal {D}}_{fd}(\Gamma _\mathbf {T})$, constructed in the prequel (Qiu in Math Ann 365:595–633, 2016). Moreover, we show that Amiot’s quotient ${\text {per}}\,\Gamma _\mathbf {T}/{\mathcal {D}}_{fd}(\Gamma _\mathbf {T})$ that defines the generalized cluster categories corresponds to the forgetful map ${\mathbf {S}}_\bigtriangleup \rightarrow \mathbf {S}$ (forgetting the decorating points) in a suitable sense.
Canonical tessellations of decorated hyperbolic surfaces

Abstract:A decoration of a hyperbolic surface of finite type is a choice of circle, horocycle or hypercycle about each cone-point, cusp or flare of the surface, respectively. In this article we show that a decoration induces a unique canonical tessellation and dual decomposition of the underlying surface. They are analogues of the weighted Delaunay tessellation and Voronoi decomposition in the Euclidean plane. We develop a characterisation in terms of the hyperbolic geometric equivalents of Delaunay's empty-discs and Laguerre's tangent-distance, also known as power-distance. Furthermore, the relation between the tessellations and convex hulls in Minkowski space is presented, generalising the Epstein-Penner convex hull construction. This relation allows us to extend Weeks' flip algorithm to the case of decorated finite type hyperbolic surfaces. Finally, we give a simple description of the configuration space of decorations and show that any fixed hyperbolic surface only admits a finite number of combinatorially different canonical tessellations.

Abstract:We give a finite presentation for the braid twist group of a decorated surface. If the decorated surface arises from a triangulated marked surface without punctures, we obtain a finite presentation for the spherical twist group of the associated 3‐Calabi–Yau triangulated category. The motivation/application is that the result will be used to show that the (principal component of) space of stability conditions on the 3‐Calabi–Yau category is simply connected in the sequel [King and Qiu, Invent. Math., to appear].

Abstract:We give explicit models for spherical functions on $p$-adic symmetric spaces $X=H\backslash G$ for pairs of $p$-adic groups $(G,H)$ of the form $(\mathrm{U}(2r),\mathrm{U}(r)\times \mathrm{U}(r)),$ $(\mathrm{O}(2r),\mathrm{O}(r)\times \mathrm{O}(r)),$ $(\mathrm{Sp}(4r),\mathrm{Sp}(2r)\times\mathrm{Sp}(2r))),$ $(\mathrm{U}(2r+1),\mathrm{U}(r+1)\times \mathrm{U}(r)),$ and $ (\mathrm{O}(2r+1),\mathrm{O}(r+1)\times \mathrm{O}(r)).$ As an application, we completely describe their Hecke module structure.

A Survey on Spherical Designs and Algebraic Combinatorics on Spheres.

Abstract:This survey is mainly intended for non-specialists, though we try to include many recent developments that may interest the experts as well. We want to study "good" finite subsets of the unit sphere. To consider "what is good" is a part of our problem. We start with the definition of spherical t-designs on Sn-1 in R-n. After discussing some important examples, we focus on tight spherical t-designs on Sn-1. Tight t-designs have good combinatorial properties, but they rarely exist. So, we are interested in the finite subsets on Sn-1, which have properties similar to tight t-designs from the various viewpoints of algebraic combinatorics. For example, rigid t-designs, universally optimal t-codes (configurations), as well as finite sets which admit the structure of an association scheme, are among them. We will discuss various results on the existence and the non-existence of special spherical t-designs, as well as general spherical t-designs, and their constructions. We will discuss the relations between spherical t-designs and many other branches of mathematics. For example: by considering the spherical designs which are orbits of a finite group in the real orthogonal group O(n), we get many connections with group theory; by considering those which are shells of Euclidean lattices, we get many unexpected connections with number theory, such as modular forms and Lehmer's conjecture about the zeros of the Ramanujan tau function. Spherical t-designs and Euclidean t-designs are special cases of cubature formulas in approximation theory, and thus we get many connections with analysis and statistics, and in particular with orthogonal polynomials, and moment problems. Moreover, Delsarte's linear programming method and many recent generalizations, including the work of Musin and the subsequent progress in using semidefinite programming, have strong connections with geometry (in particular sphere packing problems) and the theory of optimizations. These various connections explain the reason of the charm of algebraic combinatorics on spheres. At the same time, these theories of spherical t-designs and related topics have strong roots in the developments of algebraic combinatorics in general, which was started as Delsarte theory of codes and designs in the framework of association schemes. Abstract:For a finite planar graph, it associates with some metric spaces, called (regular) spherical polyhedral surfaces, by replacing faces with regular spherical polygons in the unit sphere and gluing them edge-to-edge. We consider the class of planar graphs which admit spherical polyhedral surfaces with the curvature bounded below by 1 in the sense of Alexandrov, i.e. the total angle at each vertex is at most $2pi$. We classify all spherical tilings with regular spherical polygons, i.e. total angles at vertices are exactly $2pi$. We prove that for any graph in this class which does not admit a spherical tiling, the area of the associated spherical polyhedral surface with the curvature bounded below by 1 is at most $4pi - epsilon_0$ for some $epsilon_0 u003e 0$. That is, we obtain a definite gap between the area of such a surface and that of the unit sphere.

Abstract:Abstract We discuss a notion of discrete conformal equivalence for decorated piecewise Euclidean surfaces (PE-surface), that is, PE-surfaces with a choice of circle about each vertex. It is closely related to inversive distance and hyperideal circle patterns. Under the assumption that the circles are non-intersecting, we prove the corresponding discrete uniformization theorem. The uniformization theorem for discrete conformal maps corresponds to the special case that all circles degenerate to points. Our proof relies on an intimate relationship between decorated PE-surfaces, canonical tessellations of hyperbolic surfaces and convex hyperbolic polyhedra. It is based on a concave variational principle, which also provides a method for the computation of decorated discrete conformal maps.

Abstract:Discrete Weierstrass-type representations yield a construction method in discrete differential geometry for certain classes of discrete surfaces. We show that the known discrete Weierstrass-type representations of certain surface classes can be viewed as applications of the $\Omega$-dual transform to lightlike Gauss maps in Laguerre geometry. From this construction, further Weierstrass-type representations arise. As an application of the techniques we develop, we show that all discrete linear Weingarten surfaces of Bryant or Bianchi type locally arise via Weierstrass-type representations from discrete holomorhpic maps.

Abstract:We construct a new representation formula for indefinite improper affine spheres in terms of two para-holomorphic functions and study singularities which appear in this representation formula. As a result, it follows that cuspidal cross caps never appear as the singularities on indefinite improper affine spheres and so on. Comparison with other representation formulae are also studied.

Abstract:We establish the analog for real homogeneous spherical varieties of the Scattering Theorem of Sakellaridis and Venkatesh (Periods and harmonic analysis on spherical varieties, Asterisque 396, (2017), Theorem 7.3.1) for p-adic wavefront spherical varieties. We use properties of the Harish-Chandra homomorphism of Knop for invariant differential operators of the variety, special coverings of the variety and spectral projections. Our main result depend on an analog of the Discrete Series Conjecture of Sakellaridis and Venkatesh (\cite{SV}, Conjecture 9.4.6). Their result quoted above depends on this Discrete series conjecture.

Riemannian geometry of maximal surface group representations acting on pseudo-hyperbolic space

Abstract:For any maximal surface group representation into $\mathrm{SO}_0(2,n+1)$, we introduce a non-degenerate scalar product on the the first cohomology group of the surface with values in the associated flat bundle. In particular, it gives rise to a non-degenerate Riemannian metric on the smooth locus of the subset consisting of maximal representations inside the character variety. In the case $n=2$, we carefully study the properties of the Riemannian metric on the maximal connected components, proving that it is compatible with the orbifold structure and finding some totally geodesic sub-varieties. Then, in the general case, we explain when a representation with Zariski closure contained in $\mathrm{SO}_0(2,3)$ represents a smooth or orbifold point in the maximal $\mathrm{SO}_0(2,n+1)$-character variety and we show that the associated space is totally geodesic for any $n\ge 3$.

On sections of configurations of points on orientable surfaces

Abstract:We study the configuration space of distinct, unordered points on compact orientable surfaces of genus $g$, denoted $S_g$. Specifically, we address the section problem, which concerns the addition of $n$ distinct points to an existing configuration of $m$ distinct points on $S_g$ in a way that ensures the new points vary continuously with respect to the initial configuration. This problem is equivalent to the splitting problem in surface braid groups. For $g \geq 1$ and $m = 1$, we take a geometric approach to demonstrate that a section exists for all values of $n$. With an algebraic approach, for $g \geq 1$ and $m \geq 2$, we establish necessary conditions for the existence of a section, showing that if a section exists, then $n$ must be a multiple of $m + (2g - 2)$. Using the theory of Jenkins--Strebel differentials and the corresponding ribbon graph on $S_g$, we construct, for $g \geq 0$, sections for a wide range of values of $n$, while we equip $S_g$ with a Riemann structure, which we allow to vary. In particular, we construct sections for $n = 3km + 3k(2g - 2)$, $n = 2m + 2(2g - 2)$, and $n = (3k + 2)m + (3k + 2)(2g - 2)$, where $k \in \mathbb{N}$. Furthermore, we focus specifically on the case of the 2-sphere, presenting for the first time a section for $m = 5$. We make interesting observations comparing our results with those of Gonçalves--Guaschi and Chen--Salter on the section problem for the 2-sphere, where in their work, either the 2-sphere is considered without a Riemannian structure or the Riemannian structure is held fixed.

On spherical CR uniformization of 3-manifolds

Abstract:We consider the discrete representations of 3-manifold groups into $PU(2,1)$ that appear in the Falbel-Koseleff-Rouillier census, such that the peripheral subgroups have cyclic unipotent holonomy. We show that two of these representations have conjugate images, even though they represent different 3-manifold groups. This illustrates the fact that a discrete representation $\pi_1(M)\rightarrow PU(2,1)$ with cyclic unipotent boundary holonomy is not in general the holonomy of a spherical CR uniformization of $M$.

Abstract:A spherical polyhedral surface is a triangulated surface obtained by isometric gluing of spherical triangles. For instance, the boundary of a generic convex polytope in the 3-sphere is a spherical polyhedral surface. This paper investigates these surfaces from the point of view of inner angles. A rigidity result is obtained. A characterization of spherical polyhedral surfaces in terms of the triangulation and the angle assignment is established.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to introduce a generalization of Steiner symmetrization in Euclidean space for spherical space, which is the dual of the Steiner symmetrization in hyperbolic space introduced by Peyerimhoff (J. London Math. Soc. (2) 66: 753-768, 2002). We show that this symmetrization preserves volume in every dimension, and convexity in the spherical plane, but not in dimensions $n > 2$. In addition, we investigate the monotonicity properties of the perimeter and diameter of a set under this process, and find conditions under which the image of a spherically convex disk under a suitable sequence of Steiner symmetrizations converges to a spherical cap. We apply our results to prove a spherical analogue of a theorem of Sas, and to confirm a conjecture of Besau and Werner (Adv. Math. 301: 867-901, 2016) for centrally symmetric spherically convex disks. We also prove a spherical variant of a theorem of Winternitz.
