Abstract:. We show that the maximal number K 2 ( n ) of splits in a 2- compatible split system on an n -set is exactly 4 n − 10, for every n > 3. Since K 2 ( n ) = CF 3 ( n )/2 where CF 3 ( n ) is the maximal number of members in any 3- cross-free collection of (proper) subsets of an n -set, this gives a definitive answer to a question raised in 1979 by A. Karzanov who asked whether CF 3 ( n ) is, as a function of n , of type O ( n ). Karzanov’s question was answered first by P. Pevzner in 1987 who showed K 2 ( n ) ≤ 6 n , a result that was improved by T. Fleiner in 1998 who showed K 2 ( n ) ≤ 5 n . The argument given in the paper below establishes that the even slightly stronger inequality K 2 ( n ) ≤ 4 n − 10 holds for every n > 3; the identity K 2 ( n ) = 4 n − 10 ( n > 3) then follows in conjunction with a result from a previous paper that implies K 2 ( n ) ≥ 4 n − 10. In that paper, it was also mentioned that—in analogy to well known results regarding maximal weakly compatible split systems—2-compatible split systems of maximal cardinality 4 n − 10 should be expected to be cyclic . Luckily, our approach here permits us also to corroborate this expectation. As a consequence, it is now possible to generate all 2-compatible split systems on an n -set ( n > 3) that have maximal cardinality 4 n − 10 (or, equivalently, all 3-cross-free set systems that have maximal cardinality 8 n − 20) in a straight forward, systematic manner.

Abstract:A split system on a finite set X is a set of bipartitions of X. Weakly compatible and k-compatible (k≥1) split systems are split systems which satisfy special restrictions on all subsets of a certain fixed size. They arise in various areas of applied mathematics such as phylogenetics and multi-commodity flow theory. In this note, we show that the number of splits in a 3-compatible, weakly compatible split system on a set X of size n is linear in n.

Abstract:In this note, we consider relative difference sets with the parameter (m, 2, m - 1, m-2/2) in a group G relative to a subgroup N. In the splitting case, G = H x N, we give a lower bound for the size of the commutator group H', and we show that H can not have a homomorphic image which is generalized dihedral. In the non-splitting case, we prove that there is no (2n, 2, 2n - 1, n - 1) relative difference set, in a generalized dihedral group of order 4n, n > 1.

Abstract:A generalized k ‐independent set is a set of vertices such that the induced subgraph contains no trees with k ‐vertices, and the generalized k ‐independence number is the cardinality of a maximum k ‐independent set in G . Zito proved that the maximum number of maximum generalized 2‐independent sets in a tree of order n is 2n−32 if n is odd, and 2n−22+1 if n is even. Tu et al. showed that the maximum number of maximum generalized 3‐independent sets in a tree of order n is 3n3−1+n3+1 if n≡0 (mod 3) , and 3n−13−1+1 if n≡1 (mod 3) , and 3n−23−1 if n≡2 (mod 3) and they characterized all the extremal graphs. Inspired by these two nice results, we establish four structure theorems about maximum generalized k ‐independent sets in a tree for a general integer k . As applications, we show that the maximum number of generalized 4‐independent sets in a tree of order n (n≥4) is 4n−44+(n4+1)(n8+1),n≡0 (mod 4),4n−54+n−14+1,n≡1 (mod 4),4n−64+n−24,n≡2 (mod 4),4n−74,n≡3 (mod 4) and we also characterize the structure of all extremal trees with the maximum number of maximum generalized 4‐independent sets.

Abstract:Let G be a graph of order n >= 6 with minimum degree delta(G) >= 4. Arkin and Hassin ['Graph partitions with minimum degree constraints', Discrete Math. 190 (1998), 55-65] conjectured that there exists a bipartition S, T of V(G) such that [n/2] -2 <= broken vertical bar S broken vertical bar, broken vertical bar T broken vertical bar <= [n/2] + 2 and the minimum degrees in the subgraphs induced by S and T are at least two. In this paper, we first show that G has a bipartition such that the minimum degree in each part is at least two, and then prove that the conjecture is true if the complement of G contains no complete bipartite graph K-3,K-r, where r = [n/2] - 3.

Abstract:Win proved a well-known result that the graph G of connectivity κ ( G ) with α ( G ) ≤ κ ( G ) + k − 1 ( k ≥ 2) has a spanning k -ended tree, i.e., a spanning tree with at most k leaves. In this paper, the authors extended the Win theorem in case when κ ( G ) = 1 to the following: Let G be a simple connected graph of order large enough such that α ( G ) ≤ k + 1 ( k ≥ 3) and such that the number of maximum independent sets of cardinality k + 1 is at most n − 2 k − 2. Then G has a spanning k -ended tree.

In this paper, it is proved that the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an m-cycle system of K-n,K-n - I are n equivalent to 1 (mod 2), m equivalent to 0 (mod 2), 4 <= m <= 2n, and n(n - 1) equivalent to 0 (mod m).

Abstract:For n≤2k we study the maximum number of edges of an induced subgraph on n vertices of the k-dimensional hypercube Qk. In the process we revisit a well-known divide-and-conquer maximin recurrence f(n)=max(min(n1,n2)+f(n1)+f(n2)) where the maximum is taken over all proper bipartitions n=n1+n2. We first use known results to present a characterization of those bipartitions n=n1+n2 that yield the maximum f(n)=min(n1,n2)+f(n1)+f(n2). Then we use this characterization to present the main result of this article, namely, for a given n∈N, the determination of the number h(n) of these bipartitions that yield the said maximum f(n). We present recursive formulae for h(n), a generating function h(x), and an explicit formula for h(n) in terms of a special representation of n.

Two New Kinds of Numbers and Related Divisibility Results

Abstract:We mainly introduce two new kinds of numbers given by R-n = Sigma(n)(k=0) ((n)(k)) ((n + k)(k)) 1/2k - 1 (n = 0,1,2,...), S-n = Sigma(n)(k=0) ((n)(k))(2) ((2k)(k)) (2k + 1) (n = 0,1,2,...). We find that such numbers have many interesting arithmetic properties. For example, if p 1 (mod 4) is a prime with p = x(2 )+ y(2) (where x 1 (mod 4) and y 0 (mod 2)), then R(p-1)/2 p - (-1)((p-1)/4)2x ( mod p(2)). Also, 1/n(2) Sigma(n-1)(k=0) S-k is an element of Z and 1/n Sigma(n-1)(k=0) S-k(x) is an element of Z[x] for all n = 1,2,..., where S-k(x) = Sigma(k)(j=0) ((k)(j))(2) ((2j)(j)) (2j + 1)x(j). For any positive integers a and n, we show that, somewhat surprisingly, 1/n(2) Sigma(n-1)(k=0)(2k + 1) ((n - 1)(k))(a) ((-n - 1)(k))(a) is an element of Z and 1/n Sigma(n-1)(k=0) ((n - 1)(k))(a) ((-n - 1)(k))(a)/4k(2) - 1 is an element of Z. We also solve a conjecture of V. J. W. Guo and J. Zeng, and pose several conjectures for further research.

Abstract:We show that for every sufficiently large n , the number of monotone subsequences of length four in a permutation on n points is at least \begin{equation*} \binom{\lfloor{n/3}\rfloor}{4} + \binom{\lfloor{(n+1)/3}\rfloor}{4} + \binom{\lfloor{(n+2)/3}\rfloor}{4}. \end{equation*} Furthermore, we characterize all permutations on [ n ] that attain this lower bound. The proof uses the flag algebra framework together with some additional stability arguments. This problem is equivalent to some specific type of edge colourings of complete graphs with two colours, where the number of monochromatic K 4 is minimized. We show that all the extremal colourings must contain monochromatic K 4 only in one of the two colours. This translates back to permutations, where all the monotone subsequences of length four are all either increasing, or decreasing only.

Abstract:Let $d$ and $n$ be positive integers such that $d|n$. Let $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ and $T$ be an endofunction on $[n]$. A subset $W$ of $[n]$ of cardinality $n/d$ is said to be $d$-splitting if $W \cup TW \cup \cdots \cup T^{d-1}W =[n]$. Let $\sigma(d;T)$ denote the number of $d$-splitting subsets. If $\sigma(2;T)>0$, then we show that $\sigma(2;T)=g_T(-1)$, where $g_T(t)$ is the generating function for the number of $T$-invariant subsets of $[n]$. It is interesting to note that substituting a root of unity into a polynomial with integer coefficients has an enumerative meaning. More generally, let $g_T(t_1,\ldots,t_d)$ be the generating function for the number of $d$-flags of $T$-invariant subsets. We prove for certain endofunctions $T$, if $\sigma(d;T)>0$, then $\sigma(d;T)=g_T(\zeta,\zeta^2,\ldots,\zeta^d)$, where $\zeta$ is a primitive $d^{th}$ root of unity.

$L$-systems and the Lovász number

Abstract:Given integers $n > k > 0$, and a set of integers $L \subset [0, k-1]$, an \emph{$L$-system} is a family of sets $\mathcal{F} \subset \binom{[n]}{k}$ such that $|F \cap F'| \in L$ for distinct $F, F'\in \mathcal{F}$. $L$-systems correspond to independent sets in a certain generalized Johnson graph $G(n, k, L)$, so that the maximum size of an $L$-system is equivalent to finding the independence number of the graph $G(n, k, L)$. The \emph{Lovász number} $\vartheta(G)$ is a semidefinite programming approximation of the independence number $\alpha$ of a graph $G$. In this paper, we determine the leading order term of $\vartheta(G(n, k, L))$ of any generalized Johnson graph with $k$ and $L$ fixed and $n\rightarrow \infty$. As an application of this theorem, we give an explicit construction of a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with a large gap between the Lovász number and the Shannon capacity $c(G)$. Specifically, we prove that for any $\epsilon > 0$, for infinitely many $n$ there is a generalized Johnson graph $G$ on $n$ vertices which has ratio $\vartheta(G)/c(G) = \Omega(n^{1-\epsilon})$, which improves on all known constructions. The graph $G$ \textit{a fortiori} also has ratio $\vartheta(G)/\alpha(G) = \Omega(n^{1-\epsilon})$, which greatly improves on the best known explicit construction.

Abstract:Consider a family $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-subsets of an ambient $(k^2-k+1)$-set such that no pair of $k$-subsets in $\mathcal{F}$ intersects in exactly one element. In this short note we show that the maximal size of such $\mathcal{F}$ is $\binom{k^2-k-1}{k-2}$ for every $k > 1$.

Abstract:Splitter sets have been widely studied due to their applications in flash memories, and their close relations with lattice tilings and conflict avoiding codes. In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of nonsingular perfect splitter sets, $B[-k_1,k_2](p)$ sets, where $0\le k_{1}\leq k_{2}=4$. Meanwhile, constructions of nonsingular perfect splitter sets are given. When perfect splitter sets do not exist, we present four new constructions of quasi-perfect splitter sets. Finally, we give a connection between nonsingular splitter sets and Cayley graphs, and as a byproduct, a general lower bound on the maximum size of nonsingular splitter sets is given.

Abstract:Weakly compatible split systems are a generalization of unrooted evolutionary trees and are commonly used to display reticulate evolution or ambiguity in biological data. They are collections of bipartitions of a finite set X of taxa (e.g. species) with the property that, for every four taxa, at least one of the three bipartitions into two pairs (quartets) is not induced by any of the X-splits. We characterize all split systems where exactly two quartets from every quadruple are induced by some split. On the other hand, we construct maximal weakly compatible split systems where the number of induced quartets per quadruple tends to 0 with the number of taxa going to infinity.
Towards a Splitter Theorem for Internally $4$-connected Binary Matroids VII

Abstract:Let $M$ be a $3$-connected binary matroid; $M$ is internally $4$-connected if one side of every $3$-separation is a triangle or a triad, and $M$ is $(4,4,S)$-connected if one side of every $3$-separation is a triangle, a triad, or a $4$-element fan. Assume $M$ is internally $4$-connected and that neither $M$ nor its dual is a cubic Möbius or planar ladder or a certain coextension thereof. Let $N$ be an internally $4$-connected proper minor of $M$. Our aim is to show that $M$ has a proper internally $4$-connected minor with an $N$-minor that can be obtained from $M$ either by removing at most four elements, or by removing elements in an easily described way from a special substructure of $M$. When this aim cannot be met, the earlier papers in this series showed that, up to duality, $M$ has a good bowtie, that is, a pair, $\{x_1,x_2,x_3\}$ and $\{x_4,x_5,x_6\}$, of disjoint triangles and a cocircuit, $\{x_2,x_3,x_4,x_5\}$, where $M\backslash x_3$ has an $N$-minor and is \ffsc. We also showed that, when $M$ has a good bowtie, either $M\backslash x_3,x_6$ has an $N$-minor and $M\backslash x_6$ is $(4,4,S)$-connected; or $M\backslash x_3/x_2$ has an $N$-minor and is \ffsc. In this paper, we show that, when $M\backslash x_3,x_6$ has no $N$-minor, $M$ has an internally $4$-connected proper minor with an $N$-minor that can be obtained from $M$ by removing at most three elements, or by removing elements in a well-described way from a special substructure of $M$. This is the penultimate step towards obtaining a splitter theorem for the class of internally $4$-connected binary matroids.

Variations of Kurepa's left factorial hypothesis

Abstract:Kurepa's hypothesis asserts that for each integer $n\ge 2$ the greatest common divisor of $!n:=\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}k!$ and $n!$ is $2$. Motivated by an equivalent formulation of this hypothesis involving derangement numbers, here we give a formulation of Kurepa's hypothesis in terms of divisibility of any Kurepa's determinant $K_p$ of order $p-4$ by a prime $p\ge 7$. In the previous version of this article we have proposed the strong Kurepa's hypothesis involving a general Kurepa's determinant $K_n$ with any integer $n\ge 7$. We prove the ``even part'' of this hypothesis which can be considered as a generalization of Kurepa's hypothesis. However, by using a congruence for $K_n$ involving the derangement number $S_{n-1}$ with an odd integer $n\ge 9$, we find that the integer $11563=31\times 373$ is a counterexample to the ``odd composite part'' of strong Kurepa's hypothesis. We also present some remarks, divisibility properties and computational results closely related to the questions on Kurepa's hypothesis involving derangement numbers and Bell numbers.
