Abstract:We obtain a Calabi-Yau type volume growth estimate for complete noncompact self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow. More precisely, every complete noncompact properly immersed self-shrinker has at least linear volume growth.

Abstract:We consider a shrinking flow of smooth, closed, uniformly convex hypersurfaces in (n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space with speed fu^{alpha}{sigma}_n^{beta}, where u is the support function of the hypersurface, alpha, beta are two constants, and beta>0, sigma_n is the n-th symmetric polynomial of the principle curvature radii of the hypersurface. We prove that the flow has a unique smooth and uniformly convex solution for all time, and converges smoothly after normalisation, to a soliton which is a solution of an elliptic equation, when the constants alpha, beta belong to a suitable range, provided the initial hypersuface is origin-symmetric and f is a smooth positive even function on S^n. For the case alpha>= 1+n*beta, beta>0, we prove that the flow converges smoothly after normalisation to a unique smooth solution of an elliptic equation without any constraint on the initial hypersuface and smooth positive function f. When beta=1, our argument provides a uniform proof to the existence of the solutions to the equation of L_p Minkowski problem for p belongs to (-n-1,+infty).

Abstract:Some geometric behaviours of complete solutions to mean curvature flow before the singularities occur are studied. The author obtains the estimates of the rate of the distance between two fixed points and the derivatives of the second fundamental form. By use of a new maximum principle, some geometric properties at infinity are obtained.

Abstract:We consider the problem of deforming a one-parameter family of hypersurfaces immersed into closed Riemannian manifolds with positive curvature operator. The hypersurface in this family satisfies mean curvature flow while the ambient metric satisfying the normalized Ricci flow. We prove that if the initial background manifold is an approximation of a spherical space form and the initial hypersurface also satisfies a suitable pinching condition, then either the hypersurfaces shrink to a round point in finite time or converge to a totally geodesic sphere as the time tends to infinity.

Abstract:In this paper we study the regularity and singularity of the mean curvature flow of closed, smooth, embedded hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space with positive mean curvature, with an attempt to understand the geometry of first time singularities. First we consider the mean curvature flow of graphs and convex hypersurfaces. Then we consider the special blow-up solutions at the maximal mean curvature points and obtain self-similar solutions at type I singularities and translating solutions at type II singularities. Finally we show that a general blow-up sequence converges along a subsequence to a convex limit flow, and give a classification of ancient convex solutions. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 53C44, 53A10, 35J60.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of contracting flows of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $${\mathbb {R}}^{n+1}$$ with speed $$r^{\alpha } \sigma _k$$, where $$\sigma _k$$ is the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the principal curvatures, $$\alpha \in {\mathbb {R}}^1$$, and r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin. If $$\alpha \ge k+1$$, we prove that the flow exists for all time, preserves the convexity and converges smoothly after normalisation to a sphere centred at the origin. If $$\alpha <k+1$$, a counterexample is given for the above convergence. In the case $$k=1$$ and $$\alpha \ge 2$$, we also prove that the flow converges to a round point if the initial hypersurface is weakly mean-convex and star-shaped.

Abstract:In this paper we study the geometry of first time singularities of the mean curvature flow. By the curvature pinching estimate of Huisken and Sinestrari, we prove that a mean curvature flow of hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 with positive mean curvature is K-noncollapsing, and a blow-up sequence converges locally smoothly along a subsequence to a smooth, convex blow-up solution. As a consequence we obtain a local Harnack inequality for the mean convex flow.

Abstract:In this paper, we show an optimal volume growth for self-shrinkers, and estimate a lower bound of the first eigenvalue of $\mathcal{L}$ operator on self-shrinkers, inspired by the first eigenvalue conjecture on minimal hypersurfaces in the unit sphere by Yau \cite{SY}. By the eigenvalue estimates, we can prove a compactness theorem on a class of compact self-shrinkers in $\ir{3}$ obtained by Colding-Minicozzi under weaker conditions.

Abstract:Let M n be a smooth, compact manifold without boundary, and F 0: M n → R n+1 a smooth immersion which is convex. The one-parameter families F(·, t): M n × [0, T) → R n+1 of hypersurfaces M t n = F(·, t)(M n ) satisfy an initial value problem dt/dF(·, t) = −H k (·, t)ν(·, t), F(·, 0) = F 0(·), where H is the mean curvature and ν(·, t) is the outer unit normal at F(·, t), such that −H ν = $\overrightarrow H $ is the mean curvature vector, and k > 0 is a constant. This problem is called H k -flow. Such flow will develop singularities after finite time. According to the blow-up rate of the square norm of the second fundamental forms, the authors analyze the structure of the rescaled limit by classifying the singularities as two types, i.e., Type I and Type II. It is proved that for Type I singularity, the limiting hypersurface satisfies an elliptic equation; for Type II singularity, the limiting hypersurface must be a translating soliton.

Abstract:We derive a precise estimate on the volume growth of the level set of a potential function on a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold. As applications, we obtain the volume growth rate of a complete noncompact self-shrinker and a gradient shrinking Ricci soliton. We also prove the equivalence of weighted volume finiteness, polynomial volume growth and properness of an immersed self-shrinker in Euclidean space.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the stability of the volume preserving mean curvature flow of closed hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space. We prove that an L-2-almost umbilical hypersurface will be deformed to a totally umbilical hypersurface along the flow. Our result removes the assumption on the mean curvature in the theorems of Huang-Lin-Zhang [Peking J. Math. (2023)] and Leng-Xu-Zhao [Int. J. Math. (2014)].

Abstract:In his lecture notes on mean curvature flow, Ilmanen conjectured the existence of noncompact self-shrinkers with arbitrary genus. Here, we employ min-max techniques to give a rigorous existence proof for these surfaces. Conjecturally, the self-shrinkers that we obtain have precisely one (asymptotically conical) end. We confirm this for large genus via a precise analysis of the limiting object of sequences of such self-shrinkers for which the genus tends to infinity. Finally, we provide numerical evidence for a further family of noncompact self-shrinkers with odd genus and two asymptotically conical ends.

Li-Yau Conformal Volume and Colding-Minicozzi Entropy of Self-Shrinkers

Abstract:We show the (normalized) Li-Yau conformal volume of a self-shrinker of mean curvature flow in Euclidean space bounds its Colding-Minicozzi entropy from below. This bound is independent of codimension and sharp on planes. As an application we verify a conjecture of Colding-Minicozzi about the entropy of closed self-shrinkers of arbitrary codimension for self-shrinkers that are topologically two-dimensional real projective planes. As part of the proof we introduce two auxiliary functionals which we call stable conformal volume and virtual entropy which should be of independent interest.

Abstract:We investigate Mean Curvature Flow self-shrinking hypersurfaces with polynomial growth. It is known that such self shrinkers are unstable. We focus mostly on self-shrinkers of the form $\mathbb S^k\times\R^{n-k}\subset \R^{n+1}$. We use a connection between the stability operator and the quantum harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian to find all eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the stability operator on these self-shrinkers. We also show self-shrinkers of this form have lower index than all other complete self-shrinking hypersurfaces. In particular, they have finite index. This implies that the ends of such self shrinkers must be stable. We look for the largest stable regions of these self shrinkers.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove gap results for complete self-shrinkers of the $r$-mean curvature flow involving a modified second fundamental form. These results extend previous results for self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow due to Cao-Li and Cheng-Peng. To prove our results we show that, under suitable curvature bounds, proper self-shrinkers are parabolic for a certain second-order differential operator which generalizes the drifted Laplacian and, even if is not proper, this differential operator satisfies an Omori-Yau type maximum principle.
