Abstract:We prove an eigenvalue estimate which holds on every properly embedded self-similar shrinker for mean curvature flow. This generalizes earlier work of Ding and Xin to the noncompact case.

Abstract:We consider a shrinking flow of smooth, closed, uniformly convex hypersurfaces in (n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space with speed fu^{alpha}{sigma}_n^{beta}, where u is the support function of the hypersurface, alpha, beta are two constants, and beta>0, sigma_n is the n-th symmetric polynomial of the principle curvature radii of the hypersurface. We prove that the flow has a unique smooth and uniformly convex solution for all time, and converges smoothly after normalisation, to a soliton which is a solution of an elliptic equation, when the constants alpha, beta belong to a suitable range, provided the initial hypersuface is origin-symmetric and f is a smooth positive even function on S^n. For the case alpha>= 1+n*beta, beta>0, we prove that the flow converges smoothly after normalisation to a unique smooth solution of an elliptic equation without any constraint on the initial hypersuface and smooth positive function f. When beta=1, our argument provides a uniform proof to the existence of the solutions to the equation of L_p Minkowski problem for p belongs to (-n-1,+infty).

Abstract:In this paper, we show an optimal volume growth for self-shrinkers, and estimate a lower bound of the first eigenvalue of $\mathcal{L}$ operator on self-shrinkers, inspired by the first eigenvalue conjecture on minimal hypersurfaces in the unit sphere by Yau \cite{SY}. By the eigenvalue estimates, we can prove a compactness theorem on a class of compact self-shrinkers in $\ir{3}$ obtained by Colding-Minicozzi under weaker conditions.

Abstract:We prove a strong Frankel theorem for mean curvature flow shrinkers in all dimensions: Any two shrinkers in a sufficiently large ball must intersect. In particular, the shrinker itself must be connected in all large balls. The key to the proof is a strong Bernstein theorem for incomplete stable Gaussian surfaces.

Abstract:Under the hypothesis of mean curvature flows of hypersurfaces, we prove that the limit of the smooth rescaling of the singularity is weakly convex. It is a generalization of the result due to G. Huisken and C. Sinestrari in [5]. These a-priori bounds are satisfied for mean convex hypersurfaces in locally symmetric Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature.

Abstract:In this article we extend an unknottedness theorem for compact self shrinkers to the mean curvature flow to shrinkers with one asymptotically conical end, which conjecturally comprises the entire set of self shrinkers with finite topology and one end. The mean curvature flow itself is used in the argument presented.

Abstract:We prove a smooth compactness theorem for the space of embedded self-shrinkers in $\RR^3$. Since self-shrinkers model singularities in mean curvature flow, this theorem can be thought of as a compactness result for the space of all singularities and it plays an important role in studying generic mean curvature flow.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove gap results for complete self-shrinkers of the $r$-mean curvature flow involving a modified second fundamental form. These results extend previous results for self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow due to Cao-Li and Cheng-Peng. To prove our results we show that, under suitable curvature bounds, proper self-shrinkers are parabolic for a certain second-order differential operator which generalizes the drifted Laplacian and, even if is not proper, this differential operator satisfies an Omori-Yau type maximum principle.

Abstract:We investigate Mean Curvature Flow self-shrinking hypersurfaces with polynomial growth. It is known that such self shrinkers are unstable. We focus mostly on self-shrinkers of the form $\mathbb S^k\times\R^{n-k}\subset \R^{n+1}$. We use a connection between the stability operator and the quantum harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian to find all eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the stability operator on these self-shrinkers. We also show self-shrinkers of this form have lower index than all other complete self-shrinking hypersurfaces. In particular, they have finite index. This implies that the ends of such self shrinkers must be stable. We look for the largest stable regions of these self shrinkers.

Abstract:In his lecture notes on mean curvature flow, Ilmanen conjectured the existence of noncompact self-shrinkers with arbitrary genus. Here, we employ min-max techniques to give a rigorous existence proof for these surfaces. Conjecturally, the self-shrinkers that we obtain have precisely one (asymptotically conical) end. We confirm this for large genus via a precise analysis of the limiting object of sequences of such self-shrinkers for which the genus tends to infinity. Finally, we provide numerical evidence for a further family of noncompact self-shrinkers with odd genus and two asymptotically conical ends.

Abstract:This paper focuses on investigating Stein's invariant shrinkage estimators for large sample covariance matrices and precision matrices in high-dimensional settings. We consider models that have nearly arbitrary population covariance matrices, including those with potential spikes. By imposing mild technical assumptions, we establish the asymptotic limits of the shrinkers for a wide range of loss functions. A key contribution of this work, enabling the derivation of the limits of the shrinkers, is a novel result concerning the asymptotic distributions of the non-spiked eigenvectors of the sample covariance matrices, which can be of independent interest.

Abstract:Using a maximum principle for self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow, we give new proofs of a rigidity theorem for rotationally symmetric compact self-shrinkers and a result about the asymptotic behavior of self-shrinkers. This comparison argument also implies a linear bound for the second fundamental form of self-shrinking surfaces under natural assumptions. As a consequence, translating solitons can be related to these self-shrinkers.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the closed eigenvalue problem on hypersurfaces evolving under the inverse mean curvature flow (IMCF) in <math>Rn+1</math>, prove that the first nonzero eigenvalue of p-Laplacian <math>(p>1)</math> is non-increasing along this flow, and find an interesting monotone quantity associated with the eigenvalue along the rescaled IMCF. Finally, using a new pinching condition preserved along the IMCF, the isoperimetric lower bound for this eigenvalue is determined.

Abstract: This is a contribution to the program of dynamical approach to mean curvature flow initiated by Colding and Minicozzi. In this paper, we prove two main theorems. The first one is local in nature and the second one is global. In this first result, we pursue the stream of ideas of \cite{CM3} and get a slight refinement of their results. We apply the invariant manifold theory from hyperbolic dynamics to study the dynamics close to a closed shrinker that is not a sphere. In the second theorem, we show that if a hypersurface under the rescaled mean curvature flow converges to a closed shrinker that is not a sphere, then a generic perturbation on initial data would make the flow leave a small neighborhood of the shrinker and never come back.

Abstract:By the integral method we prove that any space-like entire graphic self-shrinking solution to Lagrangian mean curvature flow in $\R^{2n}_{n}$ with the indefinite metric $\sum_i dx_idy_i$ is flat. This result improves the previous ones in \cite{HW} and \cite{CCY} by removing the additional assumption in their results. In a similar manner, we reprove its Euclidean counterpart which is established in \cite{CCY}.
