Abstract:A series of fluoranthene-fused imide derivatives were facilely developed through a Diels-Alder reaction followed by decarbonylation. The investigation of their photophysical and electrochemical properties demonstrated that their LUMO levels were effectively tuned from -3.2 to -3.8 eV through the introduction of a fused imide unit, which provides a platform to design new air-stable and solution-processable n-type materials.

Abstract:A facile route for the synthesis of luminescent and light refractive polymers is proposed. Silole-containing diyne and halogenated tetraphenylethene derivatives are synthesized and their coupling reactions furnish poly(arylene ethynylene)s with high molecular weights in high yields. All of the polymers are soluble and film-forming and possess a high thermal stability. They emit strong green lights when their solutions and nanoparticle suspensions are photoexcited. The polymers show high refractive indices with low chromatic dispersions. Their RI values can be modulated and their thin films can be crosslinked using UV irradiation, generating negative photoresist patterns.

Abstract:A series of organic fluorescent materials based on pyrene. imidazole was designed and synthesized by one. pot reactions. The compounds were thoroughly characterized by H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis and corresponded well with their expected structures. The conjugation degree, spatial structure, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels are fine. tuned by the various substituents at C1 position of imidazole. They also increase the thermal stabilities of these pyrene. imidazole derivatives. These materials show potential applications in organic light. emitting diodes.

Abstract:Two pyrene-imidazole-based structural isomers, axisymmetric syn-PyDTI and centrosymmetric anti-PyDTI, have been easily produced and successfully separated in a one-pot reaction. Crystalline syn-PyDTI exhibited a 2-fold higher quantum efficiency than anti-PyDTI and displayed a much better performance in OLEDs with a eta(c.max) of 11.4 cd A(-1) (8.8 cd A(-1) for anti-PyDTI), although they possess the same apparent electronic structure. Observations revealed that the molecular excited-state properties are derived from distinct structural symmetries.
Novel Disubstituted Phenylene‐Linked Bis‐imidazole Derivatives: Facile Synthesis and Optical Properties

Abstract:Six novel disubstituted phenylene-linked bis-imidazole derivatives, 3a-3f, were prepared by a one-pot, microwave-assisted method under solvent-free conditions, in yields ranging from 61.6 to 85.6%. The new compounds were characterized by H-1-and C-13-NMR, UV/VIS, and fluorescence spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry, as well as by elemental analyses. The influence of substituents and solvents on the optical properties of 3a-3f was investigated. It was found that there is little influence on absorption and excitation spectra in contrast to emission spectra. Compounds 3a-3f exhibit strong fluorescence in solution, their fluorescence quantum yields ranging from 0.27 to 0.96.

Abstract:The development of stable and tunable polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) is crucial for advancing organic optoelectronics. Conventional polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), such as acenes, often suffer from poor stability due to photooxidation and oligomerization, which are linked to their frontier molecular orbital energy levels. To address these limitations, we have designed and synthesized a new class of π-expanded indoloindolizines by merging indole and indolizine moieties into a single polycyclic framework. Guided by the Glidewell-Lloyd rule—which predicts that in fused polycyclic systems, larger rings lose aromaticity in favor of smaller ones—we achieved precise modulation of the electronic structure by controlling the aromaticity of specific rings. Benzannulation at targeted positions allowed fine-tuning of the HOMO-LUMO gap, leading to distinct shifts in optoelectronic properties. We developed a scalable synthetic protocol to produce a wide range of π-expanded derivatives. The structural, electronic, and optical properties of these compounds were extensively characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed their molecular structure, while theoretical calculations provided insights into the observed experimental trends. These indoloindolizines exhibit vivid colors and fluorescence across the visible spectrum, and their enhanced stability against photooxidation compared to acenes makes them promising candidates for practical applications in optoelectronic devices. Reactivity studies demonstrated high regioselectivity in electrophilic substitutions, highlighting the indole-like behavior of these compounds and opening avenues for further functionalization. Overall, our work establishes indoloindolizines as a promising platform for the development of stable, tunable organic materials for optoelectronic applications. By leveraging rational molecular design guided by the Glidewell-Lloyd rule, we offer a new pathway for molecular design in organic electronics, potentially enhancing device performance and longevity.

Abstract:Electron-deficient pyrene-1,2,6,7-tetracarboxylic diimide (PyrDI) and its cyano derivative (PyrDI-CN) have been designed and synthesized as a new family of aromatic diimides. PyrDI has two unexpected five-membered imide rings and can form excimers facilely in the solid state. These new pyrene derivatives are promising n-type semiconductors for organic electronics.

Abstract:The synthesis and properties of a series of new 3,8,13-substituted triindole derivatives 1a-1e are reported. The 3,8,13-substituted triindoles were thermally robust with high decomposition temperatures (>= 405 degrees C) and high melt transitions (219 degrees C-373 degrees C). Compound Se was crystallized in the monoclinic system with the space group P2(1)/n. These compounds showed UV-Vis absorption (lambda(Abs)(max)) in the range of 311-345 nm in DCM solution and 371-391 nm in solid state, and fluorescence maxima (lambda(Em)(max)) ill the range of 394-412 nm in DCM solution and 416-461 nm in solid state. The fluorescence quantum yields ranged from 0.27 to 0.58. The estimated electron affinities (LUMO levels) and estimated ionization potential (HOMO levels) of compounds 1a-1e are 3.54-3.71 eV and 5.12-5.48 eV, respectively. Quantum chemical calculations using DFT B3LYP/6-31G showed nearly identical LUMO (-0.72 to -1.10 eV) and HOMO (-4.65 to 4.84 eV) values. These results demonstrated that the new 3,8,13-substituted triindoles are promising thermally stable host materials for organic light-emitting diodes with reasonable hole mobility. Abstract:A series of naphthalimide derivatives containing a benzoazole unit (benzothiazole, benzoxazole or benzimidazole) as electron-transporting unit was designed and synthesized, and their photophysical and electroluminescent properties were investigated. The key design of molecular structures included the use of carrier-transporting fragments, together with twisted molecular conformation that could eliminate the recrystallization tendency and favour the formation of a stable amorphous state. ITO/NPB/emissive layer/Mg∶Ag/Ag bilayer electroluminescent devices were fabricated. Green or yellow-green electroluminescence was obtained successfully with peak emission in the range 530–560 nm.

Abstract:A series of phosphine oxide-functionalized polyfluorene derivatives,PFH-PO-40-1 (P1),PFH-PO-20-1 (P2),PFH-PO-10-1 (P3),and PFH-PO-1-1 (P4),were prepared via a palladium-mediated Suzuki cross-coupling reaction.The structures and purities of all polymers were fully characterized by 1H and 13C NMR,UV-vis and photoluminescent spectroscopy,gel permeation chromatography,and TGA/DSC.Their emission features showed single broad peaks at about 445 nm in film,compared with those in dilute solutions,which might be caused by some degree of aggregation in the excited states of the backbones.The best electroluminescence (EL) performance of these polymers with configuration of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/Polymer/Alq3/LiF/Al was obtained from P1 (current efficiency was 4.2 Cd/A at 6V).

Abstract:A series of novel imidazole derivatives as optoelectronic materials were designed and synthesized. Photoluminescence (PL) properties of solution were investigated. The thermal analysis result indicated that these organic materials have better thermal stability with better PL properties. Due to the molecular structure introduced by imidazole heterocycles. The molecular structure not only changes the optoelectronic properties of the materials, but also enhances the thermal stability of the materials. The approach is helpful for the systematic investigation of structure–property relationship and thus for the design of novel and efficient organic optoelectronic materials.

Abstract:Using readily available aryl glyoxylic acids and arylene diacetic acids as starting materials, a series of polycyclic aromatic molecules bearing two phthalimide functional groups are synthesized via Perkin condensation followed by intramolecular cyclization reactions. Two different cyclization methods, photo-oxidation and Heck cross-coupling, are employed, both of which effectively accomplish the transformations from diaryl maleic anhydride or maleimide to polycyclic aromatic phthalimide functionality. The photocyclization protocol conveniently allows direct bridging of two plain aromatic C-H sites linked by a maleic anhydride group and uniquely produces the more twisted polycyclic framework as the major product, whereas the Heck coupling approach can typically afford more extended polycyclic skeletons. Thionation reactions are then carried out for the obtained polycyclic diimide molecules using Lawesson's reagent. For all isolated stable products, partial thionation occurs. The prepared polycyclic diimide compounds possess relatively low LUMO levels, and thionation further decreases the LUMO energy of the molecules by 0.2-0.3 eV. Electron-transporting properties are characterized by using solution-processed OFET devices, and an electron mobility of 0.054 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) is demonstrated by a selected compound. Such semiconducting performance promises great potentials of this class of compounds as useful electron-accepting and transporting building blocks in developing various new semi-conductive materials.

Abstract:Herein, we report the synthesis of a new 1,4-dihydropyridine derivative containing 2,2-dimethyl-1,3dioxane-4,6-dione and N, N-dimethylaniline. This compound exhibits aggregation-induced emission properties due to its highly twisted conformation and it has three crystalline polymorphs, which exhibit yellow (DHPM-y), orange (DHPM-o), and red (DHPM-r) fluorescence. The different emissions of the polymorphs mainly depend on their molecular conformations due to the weak intermolecular interactions, as revealed by single crystal structural analysis. More importantly, these three crystalline polymorphs show different mechanochromic phenomena under varying pressure. The fluorescent color changes in DHPM-o and DHPM-r upon gentle grinding are attributed to a crystal-to-crystal transformation which alters their molecular conformations, whereas those of DHPM-y and DHPM-o upon strong grinding are ascribed to the transformation from a crystalline state to an amorphous state. Additionally, DHPM-y and DHPM-o also display thermochromic properties. These results will provide useful information for obtaining intriguing multifunctional fluorescent materials by rational modification of classic luminogens.

Abstract:Heteratom-doped organic π-conjugated molecules (OCMs) have become one type of emerging optoelectronic materials with intriguing functionalities. Phosphorus (P)-doped OCMs are a special member of the heteratom-doped OCMs where rich P-chemistry is able to fine-tune optoelectronic properties. Herein, we report a new series of nonplanar diazaphosphepine-based polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (DPP-PAHs). Efficient and mild double P—N cyclization allowed to readily install two P-centers in DPP-PAHs. With nonplananr diazaphosphepine rings, DPP-PAHs exhibit contorted structures in the single crystal structures. The functionalization of double P-centers by H2O2 and S8 gave DPP-PAHs with P=O and P=S centers, respectively. Compared with the parent small molecule, DPP-PAHs exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields. Our experimental and theoretical studies further revealed that both P-environments and conjugated backbones have impacts on the photophysical properties of the DPP-PAHs.

Abstract:The photophysical and electrochemical properties of eleven polycyclic benzimidazole fused organic pigments (four based on phthalic anhydride, four based on naphthalic anhydride and three based naphthalene tetra carboxylic acid dianhydride) were investigated using density functional theory and time dependent density functional theory methods (B3LYP/6-31G(d) and M06/6-31G(d)). The predicted geometries are comparable using both functionals. The electrochemical properties are in good agreement with the experimental results. However, the experimental absorption-emission properties are closer to the values computed using the M06/6-31G(d) method. Both the methods perform equally well in explaining the intramolecular charge transfer characteristics. This work can help to understand the modern age functional materials at molecular level and to design new molecules.

Abstract:A new series of 4-monosubstituted pyrimidine bipolar materials containing a carbazole (PM1-PM2) or a triphenylamine (PM3-PM5) moiety as the electron donor have been synthesized by a ZnCl2-catalyzed three-component coupling reaction. These 4-monosubstituted pyrimidine compounds were characterized by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It was intriguing to find that these 4-monosubstituted pyrimidine compounds exhibited bright fluorescence with excellent quantum yields (similar to 0.53-0.93) in the blue region. PM1 and PM2 had a lower LUMO than that of CBP (4,4'-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)biphenyl), meaning that both of them had better electron injection and transfer abilities. The variation tendencies of energy levels and absorption spectra obtained from DFT calculations agreed well with those from experiment. Other electronic properties including ionization potentials (IP), electronic affinities (EA), and reorganization energies (lambda(hole) and lambda(electron)) have been theoretically studied as well. These electronic properties could be tuned by introducing a different number of pyrimdin-4-yl moieties onto to the donor fragments. The incorporation of pyrimdin-4-yl can significantly decrease the lambda(electron) and then improve the electron-accepting and hole-electron charge balance abilities. The combined theoretical and experimental studies offer insights into the nature of bipolar molecules containing 4-monosubstituted pyrimidine moieties, and provided a fertile ground for the design of appropriate ambipolar materials for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:A simple synthetic route was developed for nonconjugated dendritic iridium(III) complex based on tunable pyridine-based ligands. From an intermediate 2-bromopyridyl-4-methanol, three series of polybenzyloxy dendritic pyridine-based ligands with 2-phenyl, 2-benzothienyl, and 2,4-difluorophenyl subsitituents were easily synthesized via two-step reactions (Suzuki reaction and etherifying reaction). Using these pyridine derivatives as the CwedgeN ligands, these dendritic iridium(III) complexes exhibiting tunable photoluminescence from blue to red were obtained. The photoluminescence quantum yields of these dendritic complexes in neat films increased with the increasing generation number of dendritic CwedgeN ligands. Importantly, these iridium complexes were used as dopants for successfully fabricating polymer-based electrophosphorescent light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) with the highest external quantum efficiency of 12.8%.

Abstract:Chrysenes, picene, fulminene, modified with imide, bromo, and amino functionalities, were synthesized through Mallory photoreaction as the key step, and their electronic spectra were investigated. Fluorescence spectra of chrysene-diimide CHRDI and bromo-substituted phencanene-imides, BrCHRI , BrPICI , BrFULI were dependent on solvent polarity to display appreciable fluorescence color changes. The solvatofluorochromic behavior was analyzed by conventional relationships between Stokes shift and solvent polarity parameters, such as Lippert-Mataga and Bilot-Kawski equations. The results indicated that the solvatofluorochromism was derived from the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) nature in the excited state. Theoretical studies using time-dependent density-functional theory revealed that the phenacene-imide molecules in the fluorescent state possessed ICT characters between the strongly electron-withdrawing imide moiety and moderately electron-donating phenacene cores. Amino-substituted chrysene-imide NH 2 CHRI showed fluorescence band in a red region ( λ FL = 618 nm) in toluene with a very large Stokes shift ( Δν∼ = 7630 cm −1 ) suggesting that the molecule in the fluorescent state was highly polarized. The present results indicate that phenacenes would provide potential platforms for constructing future functional fluorophores through an appropriate functionalization.
