Abstract:In this paper we investigate the possible I-4 dependence [I = (N -Z)/A] in "experimental" symmetry energy extracted from nuclear masses. Our results show that the inclusion of the I-4 term in mass formulas leads to sizable changes for symmetry energy coefficients of the I-2 terms.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the model dependence of I-4 term in theoretical symmetry energy for a few popular mass models. Our results show that, interestingly and unexpectedly, the coefficients of the I-4 term in finite nuclei extracted from different mass models correlate strongly with the corresponding root-mean-square deviations from the experimental binding energies and also with the number of bound nuclei in the nuclear landscape predicted by theoretical models. This feature suggests that the main uncertainty of symmetry energy in finite nuclei is related to the I-4 term.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the I-4 symmetry energy coefficient [I = (N - Z)/A] extracted from a few popular mass models, and their corresponding databases improved, respectively, by the radial basis function (RBF) approach and the RBF with odd- even corrections. Our results show that the linear correlation between our resultant I-4 symmetry energy coefficients (denoted by c(4)((V))) and the corresponding root-mean-square deviations from experimental masses of these theoretical databases is very robust. Interestingly, the extrapolated values of c(4)((V)) using the above three versions of databases are consistent with each other.

Abstract:Based on the semiclassical extended Thomas-Fermi approach, we study the mass dependence of the symmetry energy coefficients of finite nuclei for 36 different Skyrme forces. The reference densities of both light and heavy nuclei are obtained. Eight models based on the nuclear liquid drop concept and the Skyrme force SkM* suggest the symmetry energy coefficient a(sym) = 22.90 +/- 0.15 MeV at A = 260, and the corresponding reference density is rho(A) similar or equal to 0.1 fm(-3) at this mass region. The standard Skyrme energy density functionals give negative values for the coefficient of the I-4 term in the binding energy formula, whereas the latest Weizsacker-Skyrme formula and the experimental data suggest positive values for the coefficient.
High-order Isospin-Dependent Surface Tension Contribution to the Fourth-Order Symmetry Energy of Finite Nuclei

Abstract:The relation between the fourth-order symmetry energy E-sym,E-4(rho(0)) of nuclear matter at saturation density rho(0) and its counterpart a(sym,4)(A) of finite nuclei in a semiempirical nuclear mass formula is revisited by considering the high-order isospin-dependent surface tension contribution to the latter. We derive the full expression of a(sym,4)(A), which includes explicitly the high-order isospin-dependent surface tension effects, and find that the value of E-sym,E-4(rho(0)) cannot be extracted from the measured a(sym,4)(A) before the high-order surface tension is well constrained. Our results imply that a large a(sym,4)(A) value of several MeV obtained from analyzing nuclear masses can nicely agree with the empirical constraint of E-sym,E-4(rho(0)) less than or similar to 2 MeV from mean-field models and does not necessarily lead to a large E-sym,E-4(rho(0)) value of approximate to 20 MeV obtained previously without considering the high-order surface tension. Furthermore, we also give the expression for the sixth-order symmetry energy a(sym,6)(A) of finite nuclei, which involves more nuclear matter bulk parameters and the higher-order isospin-dependent surface tension.

Abstract:The symmetry energy coefficients for nuclei with mass number A=20~250 are extracted from more than 2000 measured nuclear masses. With the semi-empirical connection between the symmetry energy coefficients of finite nuclei and the nuclear symmetry energy at reference densities, we investigate the density dependence of symmetry energy of nuclear matter at subnormal densities. The obtained results are compared with those extracted from other methods.

Abstract:Mass and isospin dependence of symmetry energy coefficients $a_{sym}$ of finite nuclei is investigated with the measured nuclear masses incorporating the liquid drop mass formula. The enhanced $a_{sym}$ for nearly symmetric nuclei are observed. To describe the mass and isospin dependence of $a_{sym}$, a modified formula based on the conventional surface-symmetry term is proposed and the corresponding rms deviation of nuclear masses is checked.

Abstract:We establish a relation between the equation of state (EOS) of nuclear matter and the fourth-order symmetry energy $a_{\rm{sym,4}}(A)$ of finite nuclei in a semi-empirical nuclear mass formula by self-consistently considering the bulk, surface and Coulomb contributions to the nuclear mass. Such a relation allows us to extract information on nuclear matter fourth-order symmetry energy $E_{\rm{sym,4}}(\rho_0)$ at normal nuclear density $\rho_0$ from analyzing nuclear mass data. Based on the recent precise extraction of $a_{\rm{sym,4}}(A)$ via the double difference of the "experimental" symmetry energy extracted from nuclear masses, for the first time, we estimate a value of $E_{\rm{sym,4}}(\rho_0) = 20.0\pm4.6$ MeV. Such a value of $E_{\rm{sym,4}}(\rho_0)$ is significantly larger than the predictions from mean-field models and thus suggests the importance of considering the effects of beyond the mean-field approximation in nuclear matter calculations.

Abstract:Effects of the short-range tensor interaction on the density-dependence of nuclear symmetry energy are examined by applying an approximate expression for the second-order tensor contribution to the symmetry energy derived earlier by G.E. Brown and R. Machleidt. It is found that the uncertainty in the short-range tensor force leads directly to a divergent high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy.

Abstract:Adopting the density dependent relativistic mean-field (RMF) and relativistic Hartree-Fock (RHF) approaches, the properties of the nuclear fourth-order symmetry energy $S_4$ are studied within the covariant density functional (CDF) theory. It is found that the fourth-order symmetry energies are suppressed in RHF at both saturation and supranuclear densities, where the extra contribution from the Fock terms is demonstrated, specifically via the isoscalar meson-nucleon coupling channels. The reservation of $S_4$ and higher-order symmetry energies in the nuclear equation of state then affects essentially the prediction of neutron star properties, which is illustrated in the quantities such as the proton fraction, the core-crust transition density as well as the fraction of crustal moment of inertia. Since the Fock terms enhance the density dependence of the thermodynamical potential, the RHF calculations predict systematically smaller values of density, proton fraction and pressure at the core-crust transition boundary of neutron stars than density dependent RMF ones. In addition, a linear anti-correlation between the core-crust transition density $\rho_t$ and the density slope of symmetry energy $L$ is found which is then utilized to constrain the core-crust transition density as $\rho_t\thicksim[0.069, 0.098]~\rm{fm}^{-3}$ with the recent empirical information on $L$. The study clarifies the important role of the fourth-order symmetry energy in determining the properties of nuclear matter at extreme isospin or density conditions.

Delineating Effects of Tensor Force on the Density Dependence of Nuclear Symmetry Energy

Abstract:In this talk, we report results of our recent studies to delineate effects of the tensor force on the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy within phenomenological models. The tensor force active in the isosinglet neutron roton interaction channel leads to appreciable depletion/population of nucleons below/above the Fermi surface in the single-nucleon momentum distribution in cold symmetric nuclear matter (SNM). We found that as a consequence of the high momentum tail in SNM the kinetic part of the symmetry energy Ekinsym(ρ) is significantly below the well-known Fermi gas model prediction of approximately 125(ρ/ρ0)2/3. With about 15% nucleons in the high momentum tail as indicated by the recent experiments at J-Lab by the CLAS Collaboration, the Ekinsym(ρ) is negligibly small. It even becomes negative when more nucleons are in the high momentum tail in SNM. These features have recently been confirmed by three independent studies based on the state-of-the-art microscopic nuclear many-body theories. In addition, we also estimate the second-order tensor force contribution to the potential part of the symmetry energy. Implications of these findings in extracting information about nuclear symmetry energy from nuclear reactions are discussed briefly.

Abstract:Quantitative information on the tensor force induced isospin-dependence of short-range nucleon-nucleon correlation (SRC) extracted from recent J-Lab experiments was used in constraining the high-momentum tails of single nucleon momentum distributions in both symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) and pure neutron matter (PNM). Its effects on the Equations of State of SNM and PNM as well as the nuclear symmetry energy are investigated. It is found that the tensor force induced isospin-dependence of SRC softens significantly the nuclear symmetry energy especially at supra-saturation densities.

Abstract:We review recent progress in the determination of the subsaturation density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy from heavy-ion collisions as well as the theoretical progress in probing the high density behavior of the symmetry energy in heavy-ion reactions induced by high energy radioactive beams. We further discuss the implications of these results for the nuclear effective interactions and the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei.

Abstract:We explore the systematics of the density dependence of nuclear matter symmetry energy in the ambit of microscopic calculations with various energy density functionals, and find that the symmetry energy from subsaturation density to supra-saturation density can be well determined by three characteristic parameters of the symmetry energy at saturation density ρ0, i.e., the magnitude Esym(ρ0), the density slope L and the density curvature Ksym. This finding opens a new window to constrain the supra-saturation density behavior of the symmetry energy from its (sub-)saturation density behavior. In particular, we obtain L = 46.7 ± 12.8 MeV and Ksym = −166.9 ± 168.3 MeV as well as Esym(2ρ0) ≈ 40.2 ± 12.8 MeV and L(2ρ0) ≈ 8.9±108.7 MeV based on the present knowledge of Esym(ρ0) = 32.5 ± 0.5 MeV, Esym(ρc) = 26.65±0.2 MeV and L(ρc) = 46.0±4.5 MeV at ρc = 0.11 fm−3 extracted from nuclear mass and the neutron skin thickness of Sn isotopes. Our results indicate that the symmetry energy cannot be stiffer than a linear density dependence. In addition, we also discuss the quark matter symmetry energy since the deconfined quarks could be the right degree of freedom in dense matter at high baryon densities.

Abstract:In this paper we construct an approach to extract the Wigner energy [B-w(N,Z) = -W(A)vertical bar N - Z vertical bar - d(A)delta(N),(Z)pi(np)] by using local mass relations, in the first-order approximation. We obtain W(A) = (42.7 +/- 1.2)/A MeV, d(A) = (28.7 +/- 1.5)/A MeV. By using the Wigner energies such obtained as well as empirical pairing and symmetry energies, the resultant binding-energy difference between the lowest T = 0 and T = 1 states of odd-odd N = Z nuclei is in good agreement with experimental data.

Abstract:The effect of short-range and tensor correlations on nuclear symmetry energy is investigated by using realistic nuclear momentum distribution n(k). For finite nuclei, the n(k) is discussed in detail within an analytical model that allows inclusion of both short-range and tensor correlation effects in a physically very transparent way. The equation of state of symmetric nuclear matter is calculated by using realistic n(k) parameterization. The tensor-force induced short-range correlations are shown to have a significant impact on the behavior of symmetry energy.

Abstract:Based on the isospin- and momentum-dependent hadronic transport model IBUU04, effects of the nuclear symmetry energy on the single and double pi(-)/pi(+) ratios in central reactions of Sn-132+Sn-124 and Sn-112+Sn-112 at a beam energy of 400 MeV/nucleon are studied. It is found that around the Coulomb peak of the single pi(-)/pi(+) ratio the double pi(-)/pi(+) ratio taken from the two isotopic reactions retains about the same sensitivity to the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy. Because the double pi(-)/pi(+) ratio can significantly reduce the systematic errors, it is thus a more effective probe for the high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy.

Abstract:Background: Nuclear matter fourth-order symmetry energy E-sym,E-4(rho) may significantly influence the properties of neutron stars such as the core-crust transition density and pressure as well as the proton fraction at high densities. The magnitude of E-sym,E-4(rho) is, however, largely uncertain. Purpose: Based on systematic analyses of several popular nonrelativistic energy density functionals with mean-field approximation, we estimate the value of the E-sym,E-4(rho) at nuclear normal density rho(0) and its density dependence, and explore the correlation between E-sym,E-4(rho(0)) and other macroscopic quantities of nuclear matter properties. Method: We use the empirical values of some nuclear macroscopic quantities to construct model parameter sets by the Monte Carlo method for four different energy density functionals with mean-field approximation, namely, the conventional Skyrme-Hartree-Fock (SHF) model, the extended Skyrme-Hartree-Fock (eSHF) model, the Gogny-Hartree-Fock (GHF) model, and the momentum-dependent interaction (MDI) model. With the constructed samples of parameter sets, we can estimate the density dependence of E-sym,E-4(rho) and analyze the correlation of E-sym,E-4(rho) with other macroscopic quantities. Results: The value of E-sym,E-4(rho(0)) is estimated to be 1.02 +/- 0.49 MeV for the SHF model, 1.02 +/- 0.50 MeV for the eSHF model, 0.70 +/- 0.60 MeV for the GHF model, and 0.74 +/- 0.63 MeV for the MDI model. Moreover, our results indicate that the density dependence of E-sym,E-4(rho) is model dependent, especially at higher densities. Furthermore, we find that the E-sym,E-4(rho(0)) ) has strong positive (negative) correlation with isoscalar (isovector) nucleon effective mass m*(s,0)(m*(v,0)) at rho(0). In particular, for the SHF and eSHF models, the E-sym,E-4(rho) is completely determined by the isoscalar and isovector nucleon effective masses m*(s)(rho) and m*(v)(rho), and the analytical expression is given. Conclusions: In the mean-field models, the magnitude of E-sym,E-4(rho(0)) is generally less than 2 MeV, and its density dependence depends on models, especially at higher densities. E-sym,E-4(rho(0)) is strongly correlated with m*(s,0) and m*(v,0)

Abstract:Within the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock (SHF) approach, we show that for a fixed mass number A, both the symmetry energy coefficient a_{sym}(A) in the semi-empirical mass formula and the nuclear matter symmetry energy E_{sym}(\rho_A) at a subsaturation reference density rho_A can be determined essentially by the symmetry energy E_{sym}(rho_0) and its density slope L at saturation density rho_0. Meanwhile, we find the dependence of a_{sym}(A) on E_{sym}(rho_0) or L is approximately linear and is very similar to the corresponding linear dependence displayed by E_{sym}(\rho_A), providing an explanation for the relation E_{sym}(\rho_A) \approx a_{sym}(A). Our results indicate that a value of E_{sym}(\rho_A) leads to a linear correlation between E_{sym}(rho_0) and L and thus can put important constraints on E_{sym}(rho_0) and L. Particularly, the values of E_{sym}(rho_0)= 30.5 +- 3 MeV and L= 52.5 +- 20 MeV are simultaneously obtained by combining the constraints from recently extracted E_{sym}(\rho_A=0.1 fm^{-3}) with those from recent analyses of neutron skin thickness of Sn isotopes in the same SHF approach.

Abstract:The nuclear matter symmetry energy C-sym(rho) and its slope parameter L are studied using local density approximation. With this method, the symmetry energy of nuclear matter can be deduced from matter density distributions of finite nuclei. By systematically analyzing the extracted L for different isotopes, the variation trends of values of extracted L along isotopic chains can be obtained. The study can explain why the neutron rich nuclei in isotopic chains such as Pb-208 can be used to extract L under local density approximation. By studying the regularity of extracted L for different isotopic chains, we finally obtain the value of L and its error bar: L = 66 +/- 7 MeV. Besides, the density dependence parameter gamma is constrained to be 0.69 +/- 0.07 for the ansatz of symmetry energy C-sym(rho) = C-sym(rho(0))(rho/rho(0))(gamma).
