Abstract:The mechanism of the gas-phase reaction UF6 + H2O -> UOF4 + 2HF is explored using relativistic density functional theory calculations. Initially, H2O coordinates with UF6 to form a 1: 1 complex UF6 center dot H2O. Over an activation energy barrier of about 19 kcal/mol, H2O transfers a H atom to a nearby ligand F, resulting in UF5OH + HF. The eliminated HF or another H2O molecule may form a hydrogen bond with UF5OH. Starting from UF5OH, the second HF elimination results in UOF4. If UF5OH is in the isolated form, UF5OH -> UOF4 + HF takes place over a barrier of 24 kcal/mol. If UF5OH is hydrogen-bonded with H2O or HF, the conversion barrier is less than 10 kcal/mol. Once formed, the unstable UOF4 tends to associate with additional ligands and hydrogen-bonding donors. The calculated binding energies indicate the significance of such interactions, which may have profound impact on further HF eliminating reactions. The IR spectra features can be used to indicate the formation and interaction type of the intermediates and products.

Abstract:In our previous work (J. Phys. Chem. A 2008, 112, 8877.), we found theoretical evidence indicating UF5OH is an intermediate produced in the first step of UF6 hydrolysis. In this work, we explored the probable reaction channels starting from UF5OH + UF6 and UF5OH + UF5OH systems using relativistic density functional theory calculations. Initially, the two uranium containing species associate to form complex UF6 center dot UF5OH or dimer (UF5OH)(2) through hydrogen bonding. The energy released is 12-16 kcal/mol, which may promote further reactions. After H2O or HF are eliminated from the complex or dimer, compounds containing U-C-U bond are produced. These compounds are potentially feasible to associate into larger clusters or solidify. Relative to the isolated initial species, the energies of the final products are -6 to -13 kcal/mol lower, indicating that the reactions may spontaneously proceed. The calculated IR spectra features can be used to indicate the formation and interaction type of the intermediates and products.

Abstract:Mechanistic insight into the homolytic cleavage of the O-H bond of water by the heteronuclear oxide cluster [Ga2 Mg2 O5 ](.+) has been derived from state-of-the-art gas-phase experiments in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. Three pathways have been identified computationally. In addition to the conventional hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) to the radical center of a bridging oxygen atom, two mechanistically distinct proton-coupled electron-transfer (PCET) processes have been identified. The energetically most favored path involves initial coordination of the incoming water ligand to a magnesium atom followed by an intramolecular proton transfer to the lone-pair of the bridging oxygen atom. This step, which is accomplished by an electronic reorganization, generates two structurally equivalent OH groups either of which can be liberated, in agreement with labeling experiments.

Abstract:Uranium hexafluoride ( UF6 ) is used ubiquitously in the nuclear fuel cycle. Its spontaneous hydrolysis in the presence of atmospheric moisture is well known but the associated reaction mechanism is poorly understood. Here a computational study was undertaken with the aim of characterizing the rate-limiting step of the hydrolysis of UF6 under dry conditions. Toward this end, we began by examining the convergence of various energy contributions to the atomization enthalpy ( ΔHat ) of UF6 and its hydrolysis product, UO2F2 . This enabled a refinement of our previous composite method, resulting in a composite method with improved accuracy that also scales well by leveraging existing massively-parallel codes. We find that extremely high levels of theory are required to obtain ΔHat within experimental error bars, in agreement with the literature. Having calibrated our composite scheme, we proceed to investigate approximations appropriate for computing accurate binding energies and barrier heights on the potential energy surface governing the hydrolysis of UF6 . In combination with high-accuracy relative energies, a master equation approach is used to generate rate constants, and comparisons are made with recent measurements [Richards et al., RSC Adv., 2020, 10, 34729]. Based on kinetic and equilibrium arguments, we conclude that the hydrolysis of UF6 , when proceeding under very dry conditions, is unlikely to be initiated via UF6+H2O→UF5OH+HF type reactions. Finally, computed equilibrium constants and rate coefficients are tabulated for the temperature range 300–1800 K.

Abstract:The gas phase reactions of U(+) and U(2+) with H2O were investigated using an ab initio molecular dynamics method. All of the information along the minimum energy path were calculated with density functional theory (DFT) and coupled cluster methods. For U(+) with H2O, the molecular dynamics simulations yield a branching ratio of 86% for the H2 elimination channel to 14% for the H atomic elimination channel in agreement with the quadruple ion trap mass spectrometry (QIT/MS) experimental ratio of 91% to 9%. In the case of U(2+) + H2O, there is a crossing of the potential energy surfaces (PES) after the first transition state. Crossing seams between the PES and possible spin inversion processes were studied by means of the intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) approach. For U(2+) with H2O, all trajectories are corresponds to H atom elimination channel, this is consistent with the Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) experimental results. The chemical bonding evolution along the reaction pathways was discussed by using topological methodologies of the electron localization function (ELF).

Abstract:The dissociation of H 2 O on γ-U (110) and γ-U (100) surfaces has been studied by using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations at an elevated temperature of 800 K. The simulation results show the dissociation of H 2 O into the OH group and H atom, which are finally adsorbed on the uranium surface. The dissociation results from electronic interactions between surface uranium 6d/5 f states and the s orbitals of H and the 2p orbitals of O. Additionally, the hybridization between the 6d orbital of surface uranium and the 2p orbital of oxygen plays a dominant role in dissociative adsorption. A significant charge transfer from the uranium surface to the O and H atoms is observed, indicating the formation of U–O and U–H chemical bonds. Specifically, for γ-U (110) surface, the most preferred site for OH is the 3-fold hollow site and H occupies the bridge site or the 3-fold hollow site. On the other hand, for γ-U (100) surface, OH prefers to adsorb on the bridge site and H occupies the 3-fold hollow site or the bridge site. Furthermore, when H 2 O is placed on the TOP site, its initial dissociation on the γ-U (110) surface is easier compared to the γ-U (100) surface.

Abstract:Low-energy electron-induced reactions in hydrated molecular complexes are important in various fields ranging from the Earth’s environment to radiobiological processes including radiation therapy. Nevertheless, our understanding of the reaction mechanisms in particular in the condensed phase and the role of water in aqueous environments is incomplete. Here we use small hydrogen-bonded pure and mixed dimers of the heterocyclic molecule tetrahydrofuran (THF) and water as models for biochemically relevant systems. For electron-impact-induced ionization of these dimers, a molecular ring-break mechanism is observed, which is absent for the THF monomer. Employing coincident fragment ion mass and electron momentum spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations, we find that ionization of the outermost THF orbital initiates significant rearrangement of the dimer structure increasing the internal energy and leading to THF ring-break. These results demonstrate that the local environment in form of hydrogen-bonded molecules can considerably affect the stability of molecular covalent bonds.

Abstract:H2O is one of the most important factors that affect the final SF6 decomposition products, the products concentration, and the production rate, and so on, under partial discharge (PD). However, the mechanism and regular pattern of SF6 decomposition haven't been figured out completely. This paper had made several experiments, as long as 48h, research SF6 PD decomposition in different H2O contents, all experiments utilize the test platform of SF6 PD decomposition, and then detect the concentration of SF6 decomposition products in different H2O contents. It had obtained the regular pattern of the effects of H2O on SF6 PD decomposition. The results indicate: increasing H2O contents can restrain the generation of CF4, and the generation of CO2 is more than CF4. Moreover, H2O will firstly promote the generation of both SO2F2 and SOF2, and then inhibit them as time goes on. Discriminatively, the promotion and inhibition leaded by H2O of SOF2 are stronger than that of SO2F2. Therefore, when diagnoses facilities faults through using the SF6 decomposition products, the effect of H2O should be taken into account.

Abstract:In atomic force spectroscopic studies of the elastomeric protein ubiquitin, the β-strands 1-5 serve as the force clamp. Simulations show how the rupture force in the force-induced unfolding depends on the kinetics of water molecule insertion into positions where they can eventually form hydrogen bonding bridges with the backbone hydrogen bonds in the force-clamp region. The intrusion of water into this region is slowed down by the hydrophobic shielding effect of carbonaceous groups on the surface residues of β-strands 1-5, which thereby regulates water insertion prior to hydrogen bond breakage. The experiments show that the unfolding of the mechanically stressed protein is nonexponential due to static disorder. Our simulations show that different numbers and/or locations of bridging water molecules give rise to a long-lived distribution of transition states and static disorder. We find that slowing down the translational (not rotational) motions of the water molecules by increasing the mass of their oxygen atoms, which leaves the force field and thereby the equilibrium structure of the solvent unchanged, increases the average rupture force; however, the early stages of the force versus time behavior are very similar for our “normal” and fictitious “heavy” water models. Finally, we construct six mutant systems to regulate the hydrophobic shielding effect of the surface residues in the force-clamp region. The mutations in the two termini of β-sheets 1-5 are found to determine a preference for different unfolding pathways and change mutant’s average rupture force.

Abstract:The characteristic Raman spectra of UH3 produced at the initial stage of U-H2O corrosion were observed, which provided direct evidence of the existence of water-formed interfacial UH3. The results were further identified and confirmed using the isotopic labelling method and other characterization techniques. The water-formed hydride layer was distributed at the interface of metallic uranium and oxide exhibiting several nanometers of thickness via the depth profile analysis. The characterizations of oxidation behavior suggested that the interfacial UH3 transformed to oxide and acted as a reaction front in the corrosion process. The experimental results supported the hydride-catalyzed corrosion mechanism of wet oxidation.

Abstract:Bare uranyl tetrafluoride (UO2F42-) and its solvation complexes by one and two water or acetonitrile molecules have been observed in the gas phase using electrospray ionization and investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The isolated UO2F42- dianion is found to be electronically stable with an adiabatic electron binding energy of 1.10 +/- 0.05 eV and a repulsive Coulomb barrier of similar to 2 eV. Photoelectron spectra of UO2F42- display congested features due to detachment from U-O bonding orbitals and F 2p lone pairs. Solvated complexes by H2O and CH3CN, UO2F4(H2O)(n)(2-) and UO2F4(CH3CN)(n)(2-) (n = 1, 2), are also observed and their photoelectron spectra are similar to those of the bare UO2F42- dianion, suggesting that the solvent molecules are coordinated to the outer sphere of UO2F42- with relatively weak interactions between the solvent molecules and the dianion core. Both DFT and CCSD(T) calculations are performed on UO2F42- and its solvated species to understand the electronic structure of the dianion core and solute-solvent interactions. The strong U-F interactions with partial (d-p)pi bonding are shown to weaken the U=O bonds in the [O=U=O](2+) unit. Each H atom in the water molecules forms a H-bond to a F atom in the equatorial plane of UO2F42-, while each CH3CN molecule forms three H-bonds to two F ligands and one axial oxygen.
First-Principles Study of Water Reaction and H-2 Formation on Uo2 (111) and (110) Single Crystal Surfaces

Abstract:Molecular and dissociative adsorption behavior of H2O along with the accompanying H-2 formation mechanism on the UO2 (111) and (110) surfaces have been investigated by using DFT+U calculations. According to our calculations, the higher stability of the (111) surface leads to higher oxygen vacancy formation energy compared to the (110) surface. On the stoichiometric (111) and (110) surfaces, the first hydrogen atom of water molecule can dissociate readily with very small or no energy barrier. On the contrary, dissociation of the second one becomes the rate-determining step, and water-catalysis leads to the decrease of energy barrier from 0.92 to 0.70 eV and from 2.36 to 1.21 eV on the stoichiometric (111) and (110) surfaces, respectively. H-2 formation resulting from water dissociation may undergo two pathways in the presence of surface oxygen vacancy on the reduced UO2 (111) surface. One is characterized by direct combination of two hydrogen atoms of one water molecule, and the other is characterized by dissociation of the first hydrogen atom and its combination with a neighboring surface hydrogen atom. The above two formation pathways possess the energy barriers of 0.56 and 0.53 eV, corresponding to the large reaction energies of -2.62 and -2.64 eV, respectively.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with cluster models are performed at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level for investigating the solvent effects in Al(H2O)(6)(3+) water-exchange reactions. A "One-by-one" method is proposed to obtain the most representative number and arrangement of explicit H2Os in the second hydration sphere. First, all the possible ways to locate one explicit H2O in second sphere (N-m' = 1) based on the gas phase structure (N-m' = 0) are examined, and the optimal pathway (with the lowest energy barrier) for N-m' = 1 is determined. Next, more explicit H2Os are added one by one until the inner-sphere is fully hydrogen bonded. Finally, the optimal pathways with N-m' = 0-7 are obtained. The structural and energetic parameters as well as the lifetimes of the transition states are compared with the results obtained with the "Independent-minimum" method and the "Independent-average" method, and all three methods show that the pathway with N-m' = 6 may be representative. Our results give a new idea for finding the representative pathway for water-exchange reactions in other hydrated metal ion systems.
Experimental Study on the Effects of H(2)O on PCDD/Fs Formation by De Novo Synthesis in Carbon/cucl(2) Model System.

Abstract:The effects of H(2)O vapor on de novo synthesis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and biphenyls (PCB) were investigated at two levels (none and 10 vol.%) in various model systems containing five different carbons, CuCl(2), and quartz, exposed to a flow of 10% O(2)/N(2) at 300 degrees Celsius. The influence of H(2)O was studied on (1) speciation and behavior of copper compounds, (2) catalytic oxidation of carbons of distinct reactivity, and (3) formation of organic chlorine compounds, with the aim to investigate any effects on de novo synthesis. It is found that H(2)O converts CuCl(2) to CuCl(2) x CuO, and finally to CuO in a flow of 10% O(2)/N(2) at 300 degrees Celsius and that it decreases of organic chlorine (C-Cl) formation. When CuCl(2) is supported on carbon, the addition of H(2)O promotes the catalytic oxidation of this carbon. When CuCl(2) is supported on quartz, however, H(2)O inhibits carbon oxidation. A decrease in chlorination level of PCDD/Fs and PCBs with water addition is observed for all (six) model ashes; yet this addition affects the yields of PCDD/Fs and PCBs differently. Under the experimental conditions tested H(2)O does not react with Cu(2)Cl(2), which is the catalyst of carbon oxidation. On the basis of the experimental results, the following mechanism is proposed: conversion of CuCl(2) into CuO which is less reactive in de novo synthesis and promotion of catalytic oxidation of carbon by Cu(2)Cl(2).

Abstract:This study investigates the corrosion products formed on the surface of metallic uranium (U) during H2O corrosion in an open to air system. The results unambiguously reveal the presence of UH3 nanoparticles dispersed in the non-adherent corrosion layers, albeit in small quantities. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy provides an atomic-scale depiction of the coexistent structure of UH3 and UO2, which is described by an innovative “Core (UH3) – Shell (UO2)” model within the corrosion layers. The direct observation of UH3 in this form provides evidence supporting the U-H2O corrosion mechanism postulated to be catalyzed by the interfacial hydrides.

Abstract:Water is a basic resource and an essential component of living organisms. It often exhibits some novel properties under confinement. The water clusters (H2O)n (n = 4-8) confined in the cavity of uranyl peroxide cluster Na20(UO2)20(O2)30 (U20) have been computationally investigated by using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations in this study. The results show that the confined water clusters can form hydrogen bonds with the internal oxygen atoms (Ouranyl) of U20, and their conformations changed significantly. The average lengths (2.553-2.645 Å) of hydrogen bonds in confined (H2O)n are shorter than those (2.731-2.841 Å) in the corresponding free water clusters. Moreover, these confined hydrogen bonds show better hydrogen bond patterns according to the quantified indices. The natural bond orbital (NBO) calculations determine that there is electron transferring from the U20 to its interior (H2O)n. It is the main reason for enhancing hydrogen bond interactions among the confined water molecules because their oxygen atoms are more negatively charged and their hydrogen atoms are more positively charged. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and interacting quantum atoms (IQA) analyses indicate that the confined hydrogen bonds are more covalent, based on the significant electron density ρ(r) and local energy density H(r) at the bond critical points (BCPs), and the stronger energies of interatomic exchange interactions (Vxc). These findings may help to promote the communication of confined water clusters and enrich the understating of confined hydrogen bonds.

Abstract:We study the ionization and fragmentation of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and hydrated THF clusters induced by low-energy (65 eV) electron-collision using an (e, 2e + ion) triple coincidence method. The momentum vectors and the kinetic energies for all three final-state charged particles are determined. The ionic fragments are identified from the measured ion time-of-flight spectra. The influence of the water environment on the biomolecule is investigated with the ion fragment correlated binding energy spectra and triple-differential cross sections as well as ab-initio dynamical calculations.

Abstract:Reactive force field molecular dynamics (ReaxFF-MD) (reactive force field molecular dynamics) is a promising method for exploring complex chemical reactions, allowing a better understanding of sulfur transformation during coal pyrolysis. In this work, we built three pyrolysis systems with different H2O contents to explore the effect of H2O on the transformation of sulfur during demineralized pyrolysis by ReaxFF-MD. Product distributions, sulfur-containing bonds, and the path of organic sulfur in different systems were analyzed. We found that H2O could accelerate the pyrolysis process, reduce the semicoke yield, and increase the production of gas components significantly, including H2S gas. By adding H2O during pyrolysis, more sulfur in semicoke and heavy tar converted to gas and light tar, respectively. H2O not only promoted the cleavage of C-S bonds but also generated more H free radicals to form SH free radicals, thereby promoting the removal of organic sulfur.
