Abstract:In this work, the enhanced dewaterabing characteristics of waste activated sludge using Fenton pretreatment was investigated in terms of effectiveness and statistical optimization. Response surface method (RSM) and central composite design (CCD) were applied to evaluate and optimize the effectiveness of important operational parameters, i.e., H2O2 concentrations, Fe2+ concentrations and initial pH values. A significant quadratic polynomial model was obtained (R 2= 0.9189) with capillary suction time (CST) reduction efficiency as the response. Numerical optimization based on desirability function was carried out. The optimum values for H2O2, Fe2+, and initial pH were found to be 178 mg·g−1 VSS (volatile suspended solids), 211 mg·g−1 VSS and 3.8, respectively, at which CST reduction efficiency of 98.25% could be achieved. This complied well with those predicted by the established polynomial model. The results indicate that Fenton pretreatment is an effective technique for advanced waste activated sludge dewatering. The enhancement of sludge dewaterability by Fenton’s reagent lies in the migration of sludge bound water due to the disintegration of sludge flocs and microbial cells lysis.

Abstract:A combination of Fenton pre-oxidation and flocculation process was utilized to enhance the dewaterability of waste-activated sludge. The dry solid content of dewatered sludge (DS) cake, supernatant turbidity, sludge specific resistance to filtration (SRF), supernatant of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), polysaccharides, and proteins concentration were examined to evaluate the sludge dewatering performance and describe the mechanism involved in sludge treatment. The optimal conditions were as follows: 40 mg.g(-1) DS H2O2; 50 mg.g(-1) DS Fe2+; pH 3; Fenton reaction time, 90 min; and 60 mg.L-1 cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM). Under these conditions, the optimal SRF and DS achieved were 1.21 x 10(9) m.kg(-1) and 34.20%, respectively. The extracellular polymeric substance structure was destroyed by Fenton oxidation. Consequently, polysaccharide and protein were released into the supernatant, and the SCOD was increased. Morphological property analysis revealed an evident compact sludge floc after the combined Fenton pre-oxidation and flocculation process. The sludge particle treated with the combined processes became larger than that treated with Fenton oxidation alone. The sludge flocs were formed with the addition of CPAM during flocculation due to its excellent charge neutralization and bridging ability. The present results showed that the combination of Fenton pre-oxidation and flocculation is effective in conditioning waste-activated sludge and consequently enhancing sludge dewaterability.
Citric Acid Assisted Fenton-like Process for Enhanced Dewaterability of Waste Activated Sludge with In-Situ Generation of Hydrogen Peroxide.

Abstract:Fenton's reagent has been widely used to enhance sludge dewaterability. However, drawbacks associated with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in Fenton's reagents exist, since it is a hazardous chemical and shows carcinogenicity, explosivity, instability, and corrosivity. Moreover, initial acidification and subsequent neutralization are needed as optimal conditions for homogeneous Fenton conditioning and final filtrate discharge. In this study, a Fenton-like process for the enhanced dewaterability of waste activated sludge with in-situ generation of H2O2 and without extra pH adjustment was firstly proposed, namely citric acid (CA)-assisted oxygen activation in an air/nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) system and chemical re coagulation with polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDMDAAC). Using the response surface methodology (RSM), the optimal doses of CA, nZVI, and PDMDAAC were determined to be 13, 33, and 9 mg g(-1) dry solids (DS), respectively. This composite conditioner showed a good dewatering capability compared with the raw sludge, e.g. the capillary suction time decreased from 130.0 to 9.5 s. The enhanced sludge dewaterability was further confirmed by laboratory-scale diaphragm filter press dewatering tests, which produced a lower cake moisture content compared with the raw sludge, and the final pH of the filtrate was close to neutrality. The citric acid promoted the production of H2O2 and Fe(II)/Fe(III) species, the degradation of protein in tightly-bound extracellular polymeric substances, and the decomposition of protein-N in the solid phase of sludge, resulting a greater conversion of bound water to free water. The results of electron spin resonance indicated that the hydroxyl radicals were mainly responsible for the decomposition of proteinaceous compounds. The subsequent chemical re-coagulation with PDMDAAC can make the zeta potential of sludge samples less negative, reduce the repulsive electrostatic interactions, and agglomerate the smaller particles into larger aggregates, thus enhancing sludge dewaterability. Mechanism And Parameter Optimization Of Fenton'S Reagent Integrated With Surfactant Pretreatment To Improve Sludge Dewaterability

Abstract:Sludge dewatering can effectively reduce the volume and mass of sludge for subsequent treatment and disposal. The work validated the potential of Fenton's reagent combined with dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (DDBAC) in improving sludge dewaterability and proposed the mechanism of joint conditioning. The composite conditioner dosage was optimized using response surface methodology. Results indicated the good conditioning capability of the composite conditioners. The optimum dosages for H2O2, Fe2+, and DDBAC were 44.6, 39.6, and 71.0 mg/g, respectively, at which a sludge cake water content of 59.67% could be achieved. Moreover, a second-order polynomial equation was developed to describe the behavior of joint conditioning. Analysis of the reaction mechanism showed that Fenton oxidation effectively decomposed extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), including loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) and tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS), into dissolved organics, such as proteins and polysaccharides. The process facilitated the conversion of the bound water into free water. Furthermore, DDBAC further released the bound water through solubilization of TB-EPS and LB-EPS after the Fenton reaction. The bound water content of the sludge conditioned with Fenton's reagent decreased from 3.15 to 1.36 g/g and further decreased to 1.08 g/g with the addition of DDBAC. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis verified that the composite conditioning could oxidize and hydrolyze EPS into low-molecular-mass organics (e.g., formic and acetic acid), thereby facilitating the release of bound water.
Optimizing Sludge Dewatering with a Combined Conditioner of Fenton's Reagent and Cationic Surfactant

Abstract:Enhancing sludge dewatering is of importance in reducing environmental burden and disposal costs. In this work, a cationic surfactant, cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), was combined with Fenton's reagent for sludge dewatering. Results show that the Fenton-CTAB conditioning significantly promotes the sludge dewatering. Using combined techniques of response surface methodology and uniform design, dosages of Fe2+, H2O2, and CTAB for water content response were optimized to be 89, 276, and 233 mg/g dry solids (DS), respectively. The water content of sludge decreased from 79.0% to 66.8% under the optimal conditions. Compared with cationic polyacrylamide, the Fenton-CTAB system exhibited superior sludge dewatering performance. To gain insights into the mechanisms involved in sludge dewatering, the effects of Fenton-CTAB conditioning on the composition of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the morphology of the sludge flocs were investigated. The decomposition of EPS into some dissolved organics and the release of proteins in tightly bound EPS facilitated the conversion of bound water to free water and further reduced the water content of sludge cake. After conditioning, morphology of sludge showed aggregation. Overall, the enhanced sludge dewatering by Fenton-CTAB treatment provides an efficient way for management of sewage sludge.

Abstract:Fenton-like reaction has been used to enhance sludge dewaterability effectively. However, the unstable characteristic, ignitability, and corrosivity of H2O2 make it difficult for application. To address this challenge, a novel process of in-situ H2O2 generation by Fe-rich sludge biochar under aeration condition combined with poly-diallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDMDAAC) was proposed to enhance sludge dewaterability. Under optimized conditions, the capillary suction time and specific resistance to filterability of the conditioned sludge were reduced significantly compared with raw sludge (54.2 vs. 351 s, 0.249x1013 vs. 2.68x1013 m/kg, respectively). The carbon skeleton in Fe-rich sludge biochar can reduce the charge transfer impedance between Fe and O2, promoting in-situ generation of H2O2. The degradation of hydrophilic organics in extracellular polymeric sub-stances of sludge floc and the PDMDAAC coagulation effect promoted the release of bound water. This study provides a strategy to enhance sludge dewaterability by Fenton-like reaction initiated by Fe-rich biochar with no H2O2 addition.

Abstract:The challenges associated with sludge dewatering are primarily attributed to the rigid structure formed through the combination of sludge extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and bound water. Although Fenton oxidation can effectively break down sludge EPS, it faces several challenges including the tough reduction of Fe 3+ and the need for large quantities of reagents. In this study, we prepared a cationic tannin (CT) that performed well in flocculation, while also serving as an effective Fe 3+ reducing agent due to its phenolic hydroxyl structure. A novel synergistic process coupling CT and the Fenton reaction, integrating flocculation and oxidation, was established for sludge conditioning and dehydration. This system exhibited superior sludge dewatering performance compared to the individual addition of CT or Fenton oxidation under similar conditions. The specific resistance filtration (SRF) of sludge decreased to 22 × 10 11 m/kg, and the moisture content of the sludge cake decreased to 63.7%. The observed compositional and secondary structural changes in each layer of the sludge's EPS further confirm the enhanced efficiency of EPS breakdown and bound water release. Following the conditioning process, the sludge filtrate and mud cake met the necessary discharge requirements and could be further treated and utilized as valuable resources in subsequent processes. Additionally, the cost of the system was obviously lower than that of conventional Fenton reaction. This study proposes the use of CT as a bi-functional material, possessing both flocculation and reduction capabilities. By combining CT with the Fenton reaction, we developed an economical and efficient deep sludge dewatering technology.

Abstract:Homogeneous Fenton (Fe2+/H2O2) serves as a high-efficiency conditioning method for sludge dewatering due to the generation of strong oxidizing hydroxyl radicals (OH). However, high dose of ferric salts produces iron-rich dewatered sludge and decrease sludge organic matters, which will not be conducive to the subsequent disposal and reutilization. Considering advantages of Fe3O4 as heterogeneous Fenton catalyst, Fe3O4-activated H2O2 (Fe3O4 + H2O2) in this study was adopted to improve sludge deep-dewatering. Reduction efficiency of the bound water (71.3 %) after Fe3O4 + H2O2 treatment (after a reaction time of 30 min) were much higher than those in the Fe2++H2O2 treatment. Especially, the moisture content of treated sludge cake by Fe3O4 + H2O2 remarkably decreased from 86.4 % to 61.3 %. Improvement mechanism of sludge dewatering after Fe3O4 + H2O2 treatment mainly included electrostatic neutralization, reactive radical oxidation, and skeleton building by analysis of contribution factors. The generation of H+ in acidification could neutralize the negatively charged compounds to promote sludge hydrophobicity. Meanwhile reactive radicals generated from Fe3O4 + H2O2 destroyed sludge extracellular polymeric substances and cell structure to release intracellular water. Furthermore, Fe3O4 as a skeleton builder could reconstruct destructive sludge flocs and form new dewatering channels. Finally, low Fe leaching content and recoverability of Fe3O4 effectively will decrease environmental implication.

Abstract:Fenton and Fenton-like sludge conditioning processes have been studied intensively due to their superior efficiency in improving sludge dewaterability. But these processes inevitably produce a large quantity of Fe-rich sludge cake that induces challenges for disposal. Herein a sustainable sludge recycling strategy has been developed by using sludge-derived Fe-rich biochar as an iron source and catalyst to enhance sludge dewatering via advanced oxidation processes. Both homogeneous Fenton reactions initiated by the leached Fe2+ from the biochar, and heterogeneous Fenton reactions initiated by the bonded iron, in forms of Fe3O4, on the surface of the biochar, are revealed to contribute to the increase the amount of center dot OH generation during sludge conditioning, which further improved the release of bound water and sludge dewaterability. The stability of the dewatering performance using the new strategy is demonstrated via three consecutive reuse cycles, in which a stable water contents of dewatered sludge cakes of approximately 46.38 wt% +/- 2.88 is obtained. The iron content of the biochar becomes stable after the 2nd round recycle. A reduction of 28.39% on the total operating cost of sludge treatment could be realized when compared with the Fenton conditioning system without sludge recycling. The proposed sustainable sludge recycling strategy could realize zero disposal Fe-containing sludge, and meanwhile produce biochar that can be beneficially reused as valuable functional materials for other applications.

Abstract:The dewatering of waste activated sludge by integrated hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) and Fenton reaction was explored in this study. We first investigated the effects of initial pH, sludge concentration, flow rate, and H2O2 concentration on the sludge dewaterability represented by water content, capillary suction time and specific resistance to filtration. The results of dewatering tests showed that acidic pH and low sludge concentration were favorable to improve dewatering performance in the HC/Fenton system, whereas optimal flow rate and H2O2 concentration applied depended on the system operation. To reveal the synergism of HC/Fenton treatment, a suite of analysis were implemented: three-dimensional excitation emission matrix (3-DEEM) spectra of extra cellular polymeric substances (EPS) such as proteins and polysaccharides, zeta potential and particle size of sludge flocs, and SEM/TEM imaging of sludge morphology. The characterization results indicate a three-step mechanism, namely HC fracture of different EPS in sludge flocs, Fenton oxidation of the released EPS, and Fe(III) re-flocculation, that is responsible for the synergistically enhanced sludge dewatering. Results of current study provide a basis to improve our understanding on the sludge dewatering performance by HC/Fenton treatment and possible scale-up of the technology for use in wastewater treatment plants.

Abstract:The electrochemical Fenton (electro-Fenton) pretreatment was explored as an attractive dewatering method for excess sludge produced in municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWTPs). The effects of initial pH, applied current density, zero valent iron (ZVI) dosage, and H2O2 concentration on sludge dewaterability and filterability were demonstrated by measuring water content (WC) and capillary suction time (CST) of conditioned sludge, respectively. Using radical scavenging tests, the significantly reduced WC and CST values in the electro-Fenton pretreatment compared to unconditioned sludge were attributed to both surface-bound (OH)-O-center dot and aqueous (OH)-O-center dot responsible for attacking and degrading extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The component of tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) was degraded to a greater extent as compared to soluble EPS (S-EPS) and loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS), resulting in the release of bound water to the aqueous phase. Protein and polysaccharide measurements in EPS fractions, together with FT-IR spectra, confirmed the preference of protein oxidation by (OH)-O-center dot. On the other hand, in the electro-Fenton process, ZVI was first electro-oxidized to Fe2+ for use in the Fenton reaction, then to Fe3+ that was subsequently reduced to Fe2+ under the applied electrical field, thereby leading to the cycle of iron (Fe2+ -> Fe3+ -> Fe2+). Moreover, ZVI/Fe3+ acted as scaffolds for agglomeration of flocs into large and compact particles for improved filterability. Results of this study could provide a basis to optimize the sludge dewatering process using the electro-Fenton pretreatment in MWTPs.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation process is one of the important process to improve the efficiency of activated sludge dewatering and digestion. In this study, electro-Fenton (EF) was investigated as a pretreatment method for improving activated sludge dewatering and disintegration in terms of specific resistance to filtration, volatile suspended solids removal and release of soluble organics. The morphology of sludge flocs and properties of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) were investigated to understand the involved mechanisms. The results showed that EF could increase the dewaterability of activated sludge effectively in 40–60 min. The size of sludge flocs decreased after EF treatment, but zeta potential was elevated to near zero and floc structure became coarser with bigger holes. EF could enhance the sludge floc disintegration, released protein and polysaccharide to soluble EPS fraction, and promote the humification process. The kinetic analysis further indicated that EF increased the pseudo first-order EPS solubilization rate. EF had high operational stability by retaining over 90% initial activity even after five repeated use of dewatering filtrate. This study provides a rapid and efficient solution for improving sludge dewaterability by electro-Fenton.
A Comprehensive Insight into the Combined Effects of Fenton's Reagent and Skeleton Builders on Sludge Deep Dewatering Performance.

Abstract:Conditioning sewage sludge with Fenton's reagent and skeleton builders has been proved to be an effective mean to achieve deep dewatering. This work aimed to give a comprehensive insight into the mechanism involved. The results show that significant synergistic effect existed between Fenton's reagent and skeleton builders. With the optimum dosage, water content of dewatered sludge cake could be reduced to 49.5±0.5%. Furthermore, raw sludge existed in the form of zoogloea and its flocs surface was plate-like. After Fenton oxidation, partial of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) was destroyed and the amounts of protein and polysaccharide dissolved in filtrate increased. Meanwhile, sludge flocs turned into smaller ones. After adding skeleton builders, constantly-changing environment promoted senescence and death of microorganism. A large area of plate-like structure disappeared, instead of which were holes. Irregular non-living things inlayed or pierced microbial cells, promoting the conversion from bound water to free water as well as further reduction of the sludge particle size. Additionally, these irregular substances could form a rigid porous structure under high pressure, which could transmit the stresses to the sludge internal parts and provide outflow channels for free water. Consequently, conditioned sludge was suitable for high pressure deep dewatering.
Sustainable disposal of Fenton sludge and enhanced organics degradation based on dissimilatory iron reduction in the hydrolytic acidification process

Abstract:Fenton sludge generated in the flocculation stage of the Fenton oxidation process contains significant amounts of ferric iron and organic pollutants, which require proper treatment. Previous studies have demonstrated that adding Fenton sludge to an anaerobic digester can decompose some of the organic pollutants in the Fenton sludge to lower its environmental risk, but iron gradually accumulates in the reactor, which weakens the sustainability of the method. In this study, Fenton sludge was introduced into a hydrolytic acidification reactor with a weak acid environment to relieve the iron accumulation as well as improve the degradation of organic matter. The results showed that the added Fenton sludge acted as an extracellular electron acceptor to induce dissimilatory iron reduction, which increased chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and acidification efficiency by 16.1% and 19.8%, respectively, compared to the group without Fenton sludge. Along with the operation, more than 90% of the Fe(III) in Fenton sludge was reduced to Fe(II), and part of them was released to the effluent. Moreover, the Fe(II) in the effluent could be used as flocculants and Fenton reagents to further decrease the effluent COD by 29.8% and 44.5%, respectively. It provided a sustainable strategy to reuse Fenton sludge to enhance organic degradation based on the iron cycle.

The results showed that bound water, specific resistance to filtration (SRF), and capillary suction time decreased from 3.95 g/g, 6.16 × 1012 m/kg, and 130.6 s to 3.15 g/g, 2.81 × 1011 m/kg, and 33 s, respectively, under combined treatment condition. Moreover, the free radicals, including ·OH, O2-·and Fe (Ⅳ), further damaged the cell structure, thus increasing the concentration of DNA in the S-EPS layer. This intense degradation sludge particle size decreased by 15.6% and significantly increased zeta potential. Under the combined technology, the α-helix and β-sheet decreased by 42.2% and 56.5%, respectively, destabilizing the spatial structure of proteins and promoting the release of bound water. In addition, the combined technology decreased (Ala/Lys) ratio in the TB-EPS layer by 67.6%, indicating the weakening of protein water-holding capacity. Moreover, the conversion of oxygen-containing compounds to nonpolar hydrocarbons increased the hydrophobicity of the sludge under a combined treatment, thus enhancing dewatering performance.
Effective Sludge Dewatering Technique Using the Combination of Fenton's Reagent and CPAM

Abstract:In this study, the combination of Fenton's reagent and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) was used in sludge conditioning for the enhancement of sludge dewatering performance. The effects of CPAM, H2O2, and Fe2+ dosages and pH on the moisture content (MC) of the filter cake, the specific resistance of filtration (SRF), and the residual turbidity of the supernatant (RT) were investigated. To observe influencing mechanisms of sludge dewatering further, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed. Results demonstrated that the sludge dewatering performance obtained by the combination of Fenton's reagent and CPAM was significantly better than that obtained using Fenton's reagent or CPAM alone. The optimum conditions of sludge conditioning were as follows: 400 mg.L-1 Fe2+, 4 g.L-1 H2O2, 40 mg.L-1 CPAM, and pH 4. The SRF, MC, and RT at optimum conditions were reduced to minimum values of 1.06 x 10(12) m/kg, 58.9%, and 3.7, respectively. The optical microscopy and SEM analyses of sludge flocs confirmed that they were more conducive to sludge dewatering after the combination of Fenton oxidation and flocculation. The sludge dewatering results demonstrated that the combination of Fenton and flocculation process exhibited excellent performance in enhancing sludge dewatering and is a promising pretreatment approach to sludge disposal.

Abstract:Fenton-like reagent and PFS were investigated for sludge dewatering with combined conitioning,and the moisture content and SRF were the major parameters to evaluate the sludge dewatering performance.Then the response surface methodology optimized the sludge dewatering conditions.Several other parameters were used to analyze the conditioning mechanism,such as soluble COD,extracellular polymeric substance,protein and polysaccharide contents in the filtrate,and the sludge partical size and Zeta potential.The results showed that combined conditioning using Fenton-like reagent and PFS could improve the sludge dewatering performance.When the initial pH was 2.98,and the dosage of Co2+,H2O2 and PFS were 10.44,59.45,48.63 mg/g(dry solids),respectively,the slduge dewateralibity was best.Under the conditions,the moisture content and the SRF decreased from raw sludge's 79.77％,1.17 × 1013 m/kg to (63.12 ± 0.5)％ and (5.32 ± 0.29) × 1012 m/kg,respectively.After the Fenton-like reagent's treatment,the partical size became the smallest,and the sludge flocs stucture were damaged,so that more bound water and intracellular water was released,and the sludge dewatering performance was improved.Then after the PFS treatment,the crushed sludge flocs flocculated again forming new dense folocs and the performance of sludge dewatering was improved greatly.Meanwhile,the partical size and Zeta potential incresed at the same time,which meant that the mechanism of re-flocculation process was dominant in charge neutralization.

Abstract:Fe2+ /persulfate process can be used to improve sludge dewaterability significantly. However, a large dose of chemicals was always needed and it will cause filter cloth clogging, equipment corrosion and sludge calorific value reduction in practice. In this study, a new Fe2+ /persulfate/TA (tannic acid) process was put forward, which could reduce the use of inorganic reagents and keep the outstanding conditioning capability. A Box-Behnken experimental design method based on response surface methodology (RSM) was selected to assess the roles of independent variables including SPS (sodium persulfate), Fe2+ and TA, on sludge dewaterability characterized by capillary suction time, specific resistance of filtration, and water content of dewatered sludge cake. The optimized conditions were SPS dosage of 0.43 mmol/gTS (total solid), Fe2+ dosage of 0.58 mmol/gTS and TA dosage of 0.14 mmol/gTS, at which the water content of dewatered sludge cake showed (75.89 +/- 0.01)% highly close to the predicted minimum water content of dewatered sludge cake using the fitted equation. Moreover, in the new process, sludge properties altered distinctly with the elimination of extracellular protein, supernatant viscosity reduction and particle size increase. Further investigations were needed to explore the underlying mechanism and practical application for a better and comphrensive understanding of Fe2+/SPS/TA process.

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient COD reduction from sulfide minerals processing wastewater using Fenton process, and the COD of the tailings dam wastewater is largely reduced from 130 mg/L to 30 mg/L, so as to meet the emission limit (COD < 60 mg/L). The effects of multiple parameters influencing the Fenton process on COD of the concentrates wastewater, such as reaction time, reaction pH, and H2O2/Fe2+ molar ratio were evaluated in detail. The mechanism of COD reduction was investigated by equilibrium speciation modelling and total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. TOC analysis shows that it is difficult for the Fenton process to oxidize all of the organics in wastewater to CO2. Pilot-scale tests were further carried out to confirm the results of the laboratory tests.

Abstract:As an essential section before final sludge disposal, sludge dewatering has currently been one of the focus issues. In this study, an innovative Fe2+/persulfate/tannic acid (TA) process was verified to further strengthen systemic efficacy on enhancing sludge dewaterability, compared with the conventional Fe2+/persulfate process. With the efficient TA/Fe2+ (molar ratio) of 0.25 added in Fe2+ (0.3 mmol/gTS (total solid))/persulfate (0.6 mmol/gTS) process, sludge dewaterability was enhanced remarkably. Capillary suction time, specific resistance to filtration, and water content of dewatered sludge cake were further reduced by 61.5%, 35.3%, and 6.4% than these in Fe2+/persulfate. Sludge supernatant viscosity was further reduced by 86.7% due to the more removal of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The secondary structure of EPS protein changed apparently and fluorescent components of EPS decreased distinctly. Sludge functional group contents were observed to be lower. TA effectually increased sludge particle size and heightened sludge flocculability, rendering the large and compact aggregations. Moreover, TA accelerated the recovery of Fe2+, facilitating persulfate activation to generate more SO4·− and ·OH for EPS disruption and cell lysis in the conditioning system. These findings provided a novel approach based on the Fe2+/persulfate process in sludge treatment for desirable dewaterability.
