Abstract:The bound states of a particle confined in a one-dimensional finite square well cannot be solved analytically, since the eigen-energies are determined by transcendental equations. Here, we numerically calculate the bound states and show their non-classical properties, using Wigner's quasi-probability distribution (also called the Wigner functions) in the phase space (x, p). In contrast to the infinite-well case, we find that the Wigner functions spread over the space dimension x, get squeezed along the momentum dimension p, and show negativity outside the well. Negativity in a Wigner function indicates non-classical properties of the bound states.

Abstract:In this paper we construct an approach to extract the Wigner energy [B-w(N,Z) = -W(A)vertical bar N - Z vertical bar - d(A)delta(N),(Z)pi(np)] by using local mass relations, in the first-order approximation. We obtain W(A) = (42.7 +/- 1.2)/A MeV, d(A) = (28.7 +/- 1.5)/A MeV. By using the Wigner energies such obtained as well as empirical pairing and symmetry energies, the resultant binding-energy difference between the lowest T = 0 and T = 1 states of odd-odd N = Z nuclei is in good agreement with experimental data.

Abstract:A novel procedure for evaluating Wigner coupling coefficients and Racah recoupling coefficients for U(4) in two group–subgroup chains is presented. The canonical coupling and recoupling coefficients are applicable to any system that possesses U(4) symmetry, while the physical coupling coefficients are more specific to nuclear structure studies that utilize Wigner's supermultiplet symmetry concept. The procedure that is proposed sidesteps the use of binomial coefficients and alternating sum series and consequently enables fast and accurate computation of any and all U(4)-underpinned features. The inner multiplicity of a ( S , T ) pair within a single irreducible representation is obtained from the dimension of the null space of the raising generators, while the resolution for the outer multiplicity follows from the work of Alex et al. on . It is anticipated that a C++ library will ultimately be available for determining generic coupling and recoupling coefficients associated with both the canonical and the physical group–subgroup chains of U(4).

Abstract:We consider the ``visible'' Wigner matrix, a Wigner matrix whose $(i, j)$-th entry is coerced to zero if $i, j$ are co-prime. Using a recent result from elementary number theory on co-primality patterns in integers, we show that the limiting spectral distribution of this matrix exists, and give explicit descriptions of its moments in terms of infinite products over primes $p$ of certain polynomials evaluated at $1/p$. We also consider the complementary ``invisible'' Wigner matrix.

Abstract:The Jordan-Wigner transformation is frequently utilised to rewrite quantum spin chains in terms of fermionic operators. When the resulting Hamiltonian is bilinear in these fermions, i.e. the fermions are free, the exact spectrum follows from the eigenvalues of a matrix whose size grows only linearly with the volume of the system. However, several Hamiltonians that do not admit a Jordan-Wigner transformation to fermion bilinears still have the same type of free-fermion spectra. The spectra of such “free fermions in disguise” models can be found exactly by an intricate but explicit construction of the raising and lowering operators. We generalise the methods further to find a family of such spin chains. We compute the exact spectrum, and generalise an elegant graph-theory construction. We also explain how this family admits an N=2 lattice supersymmetry.

Abstract:A generalized Wigner function W(T)(alpha, alpha) including the thermal degrees of freedom is presented to calculate the 'reduced' Wigner functions for all kinds of coherent and squeezed states with thermal noise by the formalism of thermofield dynamics. The results show that the different definitions of coherent and squeezed state with the same corresponding density matrix give rise to the same reduced Wigner function. By our method, the reduced Wigner function can be calculated for an arbitrary vector in the thermal Fock space, of which the density matrix is too complicated to use.

Abstract:Wigner functions generically attain negative values and hence are not probability densities. We prove an asymptotic expansion of Wigner functions in terms of Hermite spectrograms, which are probability densities. The expansion provides exact formulas for the quantum expectations of polynomial observables. In the high frequency regime it allows to approximate quantum expectation values up to any order of accuracy in the high frequency parameter. We present a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to sample from the new densities and illustrate our findings by numerical experiments.

Abstract:This paper introduces an innovative approach for representing Gaussian fermionic states, pivotal in quantum spin systems and fermionic models, within a range of alternative quantum bases. We focus on transitioning these states from the conventional computational (\sigma^z) basis to more complex bases, such as ((\phi, \frac{\pi}{2}, \alpha)), which are essential for accurately calculating critical quantities like formation probabilities and Shannon entropy. We present a novel algorithm that not only simplifies the basis transformation but also reduces computational complexity, making it feasible to calculate amplitudes of large systems efficiently. Our key contribution is a technique that translates amplitude calculations into the Pfaffian computation of submatrices from an antisymmetric matrix, a process facilitated by understanding domain wall relationships across different bases. As an application, we will determine the formation probabilities for various bases and configurations within the critical transverse field Ising chain, considering both periodic and open boundary conditions. We aim to categorize the configurations and bases by examining the universal constant term that characterizes the scaling of the logarithm of the formation probability in the periodic system, as well as the coefficient of the logarithmic term in the case of open systems. In the open system scenario, this coefficient is influenced by the central charge and the conformal weight of the boundary condition-changing operator. This work is set to expand the toolkit available for researchers in quantum information theory and many-body physics, providing a more efficient and elegant solution for exploring Gaussian fermionic states in non-standard quantum bases.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the construction and analysis of the Wigner functions for noncommutative quantum mechanics, their marginal distributions and star-products, following a technique developed earlier, {\it viz\/,} using the unitary irreducible representations of the group $\g$, which is the three fold central extension of the abelian group of $\mathbb R^4$. These representations have been exhaustively studied in earlier papers. The group $\g$ is identified with the kinematical symmetry group of noncommutative quantum mechanics of a system with two degrees of freedom. The Wigner functions studied here reflect different levels of non-commutativity -- both the operators of position and those of momentum not commuting, the position operators not commuting and finally, the case of standard quantum mechanics, obeying the canonical commutation relations only.

Abstract:Nowadays, strict finite size effects must be taken into account in condensed matter problems when treated through models based on lattices or graphs. On the other hand, the cases of directed bonds or links are known as highly relevant, in topics ranging from ferroelectrics to quotation networks. Combining these two points leads to examine finite size random matrices. To obtain basic materials properties, the Green function associated to the matrix has to be calculated. In order to obtain the first finite size correction a perturbative scheme is hereby developed within the framework of the replica method. The averaged eigenvalue spectrum and the corresponding Green function of Wigner random sign real symmetric N x N matrices to order 1/N are in fine obtained analytically. Related simulation results are also presented. The comparison between the analytical formulae and finite size matrices numerical diagonalization results exhibits an excellent agreement, confirming the correctness of the first order finite size expression.

Abstract:The alternating and non-alternating harmonic sums and other algebraic objects of the same equivalence class are connected by algebraic relations which are induced by the product of these quantities and which depend on their index calss rather than on their value. We show how to find a basis of the associated algebra. The length of the basis $l$ is found to be $\leq 1/d$, where $d$ is the depth of the sums considered and is given by the 2nd {\sc Witt} formula. It can be also determined counting the {\sc Lyndon} words of the respective index set. The relations derived can be used to simplify results of higher order calculations in QED and QCD.

Abstract:With modern computers we can compute nuclear many-body wave functions with an astounding number of component, $ > 10^{10}$. But, aside from reproducing and/or predicting experiments, what do we learn from vectors with tens of billions of components? One way to characterize wavefunctions is through irreducible representations of groups. I discuss briefly the history of group-theoretical characterization of nuclear wavefunctions, with an emphasis of using Lanczos-type methods to efficiently dissect arbitrary wavefunctions into group irreps. Although the resulting decompositions are often fragmented over many irreps, one nonetheless finds powerful patterns. First, group decompositions along rotational bands show coherent commonalities, supporting the picture of a shared "intrinsic shape;" this is also called \textit{quasi-dynamical symmetry}. Second, group decompositions for wave functions using both phenomenological and \textit{ab initio} forces are often very similar, despite vastly different origins and dimensionalities. Both of these results suggest a group theoretical decomposition can provide a robust "anatomy" of many nuclear wave functions. This in turn supports the idea of using symmetry-based many-body frameworks for calculations.
