Abstract:Microsphere, micro-net-sphere, hexagon plate and sandwich-like cobalt particle were successfully synthesized via a facile, environmentally friendly and one-step solvothermal method. Subtle control over the reaction conditions could easily achieve these different morphologies with certain crystal structures. Solvothermal method utilized here is pollution free, without surface-active agent and facile to perform. The effects of alkali and Co2+ content as well as the reaction temperature on the size, morphology and microstructure were investigated individually. Moreover, the catalytic properties concerning the catalytic thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) and magnetic properties of these selected samples were evaluated. It finds that the alteration trend of related properties correspond well with the variation of these samples' microstructure and morphology. In addition, comparing with the other morphology, Co particles with the morphology of hexagon sheet exhibits outstanding catalytic performance, implying significant practical application in the development of energy-efficient rocket solid propellant recipes. Abstract:In this paper, we report a facile approach for the shape-controlled synthesis of cobalt(II)-based coordination polymer particles. Three different structures of flower-like architectures, multilayer stacked structures and nanosheets have been synthesized by varying the volume ratio of ethanol and water. Phase-pure Co3O4 nanocrystals have been obtained by annealing the coordination polymer particles without significant alterations in morphology. The products have been characterized by X-ray diffraction techniques, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM). The catalytic effect was investigated for the Co3O4 nanocrystals with different morphology on the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) and it was found that the Co3O4 nanosheet has the highest catalytic activity. The surface areas of Co3O4 nanocrystals are measured by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) technique and the results show that the catalytic activity of Co3O4 nanocrystals for the thermal decomposition of AP increases with the increase of BET surface area and pore volume.

Abstract:Shape-controlled synthesis of CoCO3 crystals has been achieved by a hydrothermal process in a mixed solvent of water and ethanol (or glycerol). Uniform CoCO3 crystals with novel structures can be fabricated by tuning the volume ratio of water and ethanol (or glycerol). The results demonstrated that the as-prepared CoCO3 crystal can act as an efficient precursor for production of nanoporous Co3O4 particles with pore sizes of 2.5 and 60 nm by calcination at 500 °C. The nanoporous Co3O4 particles show sensitive response and reversibility in sensing performance.

Abstract:A simple method without assisted of external magnetic field or surfactant soft templates was utilized to fabricate ultra-long cobalt chains. The formation mechanism was investigated by time dependent experiment, and it was considered that the link of adjacent spherical particles were through dipolar interaction. Due to the preferred orientation and shape anisotropy of the chain structure, the coercively (He) value was about 84.5 Oe and saturation magnetization value was up to 149 emu/g at room temperature. To develop its further practical application, the products with regard to accelerate the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate revealed that it exhibited an outstanding performance of reducing the thermal decomposition temperature. This excellent performance has great practical significance on the development of solid rocket fuels. The mechanism of the excellent performance probably ascribed to the synergistic effect of cobalt and cobalt oxide was proposed. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the obtention of MnWO4 nanocrystals with different shapes, such as: nanospheres, nanorods, and urchin-like microspheres were synthesized by a surfactant-free hydrothermal method. The as-obtained powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy. XRD patterns indicate that these crystals have a wolframite-type monoclinic structure without deleterious phases. The TEM images revealed that the pH values and precursors played a key role in the morphology-controlled synthesis of MnWO4 nanocrystals. This green method is an effective approach to the controlled growth of MnWO4 nanocrystals with different shapes, which are of interest for both theoretical investigations and practical applications. Finally, a possible growth mechanism for the formation of the MnWO4 microcrystals with different shapes was discussed in detail.

Abstract:Inorganic nanoparticles with controlled size and shape seem especially technologically important due to the strong correlation between these parameters and their magnetic, electrical, and catalytic properties. Herein we demonstrate that uniform spine] cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanocubes can be successfully synthesized on a large scale via a facile hydrothermal synthetic route under mild conditions. The size and shape of final products can be readily tuned in a wide range by tuning process parameters such as hydrothermal time, reaction temperature, surfactant, concentration, and molar ratios of starting material.

Abstract:Cobalt sulfide nanotubes are synthesized by hydrothermal method. The precursor is characterized by XRD, FTIR and SEM. We study the influence of temperature on the evolution of this special coarse shape nanostructure and analyze relationship between the sizes of cobalt sulfide nanotubes and the capacitive properties of active materials. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) are used to study the effects of microstructure and morphology of the samples on their capacitance and conductivity. The specific capacitance of cobalt sulfide nanotubes (obtained in 80 C) electrode exhibits a capacitance of 285 F g(-1) at the current density of 0.5 A g(-1) as well as rather good cycling stability. Moreover, during the cycling process, the coulombic efficiency remains 99%. The as-prepared cobalt sulfide nanotubes electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance as electrode materials for supercapacitors. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Co-based compounds have attracted much attention due to their competitive catalytic activities. To enhance their intrinsic electrocatalytic activity, morphology engineering is one of the effective strategies. Hollow structures have fascinating properties due to their low density and high loading capacity. In this work, we introduce a Ga-based liquid alloy as a reactive template for the synthesis of varying Co-based hollow nanoparticles. The fluidity character of the Ga-based liquid alloy facilitates the large-scale production of nanoparticles via a top-down shearing process. The pre-installed active species (here is Zn) in the liquid alloy serve as a sacrificial source to quantitatively reduce Co2+ ions and form Co-based compounds. Well-structured Ga/CoOOH core-shell nanospheres are thus successfully prepared, and more varied Co-based hollow nanoparticles can be obtained by post-treatment and reaction. Hollow structures can offer enhanced interfacial area and increased active sites, benefiting the catalytic performance. Among the prepared Co-based catalysts, CoSe2 hollow nanoparticles exhibited the best oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with an overpotential of 340 mV at the current density of 10 mA/cm2. This work provides a novel strategy for the rational design and simple preparation of hollow nanoparticles.

Abstract:High-quality (Pd cube)@(Pt helix) core@shell nanoparticles, with a novel spiral-structured shell and highly-ordered tangential channels are successfully fabricated through a facile wet chemistry method with the help of N,N-dimethyloctadecyl ammonium bromide acetate sodium (OTAB-Na). A bottom-up synthesis strategy provides accurate control of layers by simply changing the molar ratio of Pt/Pd with a uniform layer thickness of 2nm maintained in all (1-3)-rounds samples. The irregular Pt superstructures of the shells, and sophisticated core@shell hybrid materials endow the as-produced samples with highly enhanced catalytic properties, when evaluated for hydrogenation of nitrobenzene as a probe reaction.

Abstract:Liquid-phase synthesis is suitable for controlling the morphological and structural properties of functional inorganic materials and such control is important because they strongly affect the functionality of the product. Cobalt-based materials is one group of materials that requires control of powder morphology and structure. Cobalt is an important metal element used in various industrial fields such as secondary batteries, superalloys, permanent magnets, hard metals, and catalysts. The ever-growing demand of cobalt highlights that there is an urgent necessity to develop high quality material synthesis methods and to secure cobalt resources for countries that rely on import like Japan. Especially, technologies to recycle cobalt in a form reusable for secondary batteries and catalysts are desired because further increase in demand is anticipated. Meanwhile, spherical porous tricobalt tetroxide secondary particles obtained by calcination of spherical cobalt carbonate precursors have been reported to be promising materials for battery applications. Moreover, porous metal cobalt obtained by hydrogen reduction of tricobalt tetroxide is known to be effective for catalyst applications. However, conventional methods to synthesize spherical cobalt carbonate requires addition of additives in the reaction mixtures or otherwise requires hydrothermal treatment in pressure vessels. These are unfavorable to develop a practical and sustainable process for cobalt-based material production and recycling. In this study, a facile room temperature synthesis method to prepare spherical cobalt carbonate precursors from solutions of cobalt chloride and ammonium hydrogen carbonate that does not require any additives or hydrothermal treatment is developed by optimizing the carbonate solution concentration, carbonate/cobalt salt molar ratio, and stirring time during reaction. Furthermore, we succeeded in obtaining porous tricobalt tetroxide and porous metal cobalt that carry on the exterior spherical morphology of the original cobalt carbonate precursor by calcination and hydrogen reduction. The developed process shall contribute to realize high quality cobalt-based material production and recycling.

Abstract:Single-crystalline, thermally stable Co3O4 (111) nanofilms have been successfully synthesized without any surfactant. The catalytic activity of Co3O4 nanofilms was investigated via the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP). AP exhibited unprecedentedly low decomposition temperatures and fast reaction rates in the catalyzed formations, making the Co3O4 (111) nanofilms an effective catalyst.

Abstract:Shape controlled synthesis of PbS nanoparticles, cubes, and nanowires has been realized by a so-called solvothermal–microemulsion technique in a sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/hexane/hexanol/water microemulsion system using different sulfur source. The effect of different sulfur source and temperature on the shape of PbS nanocrystallites was investigated. The results demonstrated that the combination of solvothermal process and microemulsion technique could provide a useful tool for the synthesis of other nanocrysals with unusual shape and structures.

Abstract:Using ammonia and Co(CH3COO)(2) center dot 4H(2)O as starting materials, a facile and surfactant- free route to controlled synthesis of Co3O4 nanoparticles was proposed. Co3O4 nanoparticles with average sizes of 3.5, 6, 11, 19 and 70 nm were obtained through adjusting the ethanol amount in the solvent ( the ratio of ethanol to water) or the concentration of raw materials. In this process, the presence of enough O-2 was crucial for the formation of pure Co3O4 phase. The environmental catalytic properties of as- obtained Co3O4 nanoparticles were investigated. The results indicated their remarkable catalysis for ozonation degradation of phenol, which denoted a promising application as catalyst in waste- water treatment.

Abstract:The flower-like Co3O4 assembled with nano-leaves could be obtained through annealing the cobalt hydroxide carbonate precursor, which was first synthesized via one-pot hydrothermal route. X-ray diffraction and TEM analysis demonstrated the transition from the precursor of amorphous state to Co3O4 with cubic phase structure. XRD results indicated the increase in the calcination temperature from 300 to 400 degrees C for the precursor would bring about the increase in the crystallinity degree and ferromagnetic property of the products. The TG analysis demonstrated that as prepared Co3O4 samples for different calcination temperature had significant effect on the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate. And the decomposition temperature region of ammonium perchlorate could be decreased from 303-454 degrees C to 256(3)56 degrees C by the catalysis of Co3O4. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.
