Abstract:The supersaturation-induced hydrothermal formation of alpha-CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O whiskers from the CaSO4 center dot 2H2O precursor at 115- 150 degrees C was investigated in this paper. The experimental results indicated that the conversion processes were carried out via dissolution-precipitation and homogeneous nucleation routes and connected with the critical supersaturation (abbreviated as S-crit, lnS(cri)t = a(gamma/T)(3/2)) of the system. In the temperature range of 115-150 degrees C, alpha-CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O whiskers with a length of 200-500 mu m and a diameter of 0.1-0.5 mu m formed quickly within 2.0-5.0 minutes once the supersaturation (abbreviated as S) reached Scrit. The supersaturation-induced formation of alpha-CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O is well consistent with the first-order reaction model, and the corresponding activation energy (E-a) and pre-exponential factor (A(0)) were 161.7 kJ mol(-1) and 2.601 x 10(21) h(-1), respectively.

Abstract:The influence of NH4Cl on hydrothermal formation of CaSO4·0.5H2O whiskers from CaSO4·2H2O precursor at 135°C was investigated in this paper. Compared with the blank experiment, the presence of 3 × 10−2 mol·L−1 NH4Cl led to the increase of the lengths of the whiskers from 50 to 160 μm to 150 to 300 μm and the decrease of the diameters from 1.0 to 1.5 μm to 0.2 to 0.5 μm. The dissolution of CaSO4·2H2O was accelerated by the complex interactions with NH4Cl and the soluble cations, which led to the decrease of the induction time for the occurrence of α-CaSO4·0.5H2O from 46 minutes to 34 minutes and the formation of CaSO4·0.5H2O whiskers with high aspect ratios. Furthermore the critical supersaturation for the formation of α-CaSO4·0.5H2O was investigated.

Abstract:The influence of the activity of calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO4·2H2O) on the hydrothermal formation of CaSO4·0.5H2O whiskers was investigated in this paper, using commercial CaSO4·2H2O as the raw material. The experimental results indicated that the activity of CaSO4·2H2O was improved after calcination of the commercial CaSO4·2H2O at 150°C for 6.0 h followed by hydration at room temperature for 1.0 h, corresponding to the decrease of the agglomerated particle sizes from 29.7 μm to 15.1 μm, the increase of the specific surface areas (BET) from 4.75 m2·g−1 to 19.12 m2·g−1 and the grain sizes from 95 nm to 40 nm. The active CaSO4·2H2O produced by the calcination-hydration treatment favored the hydrothermal dissolution of CaSO4·2H2O, promoting the formation of hemihydrate calcium sulfate (CaSO4·0.5H2O) whiskers with high aspect ratios.

Abstract:This paper investigated the hydrothermal formation of hemi-hydrate calcium sulfate whiskers(CaSO_4·0.5H_2O),using CaCl_2 and Na_2SO_4 as the raw materials.The influences of the precipitation of dihydrate calcium sulfate(CaSO_4·2H_2O) precursor and the hydrothermal conditions on the morphology of the hydrothermal products were studied.The experimental results indicated that the dihydrate calcium sulfate precursors with poor crystallinity and small particle sizes were formed in the case of adding Na_2SO_4 solution to CaCl_2 solution at room temperature due to the comparatively low supersaturation,which favored the formation of the hemi-hydrate calcium sulfate whiskers with high aspect ratios.The conversion of dihydrate calcium sulfate to hemi-hydrate calcium sulfate whiskers was carried out via the hydrothermal dissolution-precipitation route and was accelerated by the increase of hydrothermal temperature.

Abstract:The influence of addictives on the hydrothermal formation of hemi-hydrate calcium sulfate (CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O) whiskers were discussed in this paper, using CaCl2 and Na2SO4 as the reactants. The presence of NaCl, CaCl2 or Na2SO4 increased the concentrations of Ca2+ and SO42-, leading to the formation of CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O whiskers with aspect ratio lower than 50. The one dimensional growth of CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O whiskers was enhanced in water with no additives owing to the low super-saturation, leading to the formation of uniform whiskers with a length of 200-2000 mu m and an aspect ratio higher than 100.

Abstract:Calcium sulfates (anhydrite and hydrates) were synthesized by mixing CaCl2 and Na2SO4 solutions at room temperature followed by aging the resulting slurries at elevated temperatures. The variation of the morphology and structure of the calcium sulfates with aging temperature was investigated. Experimental results indicated that CaSO4·2H2O plates, CaSO4·0.5H2O whiskers and CaSO4 spindles were formed at ≤100°C, 130–160°C and ≥170°C, respectively. The formation and conversion of the calcium sulfates were discussed on the basis of characterization of the products and chemical analysis of the solutions. Compared to NaCl solution, pure water favors one-dimensional hydrothermal growth of CaSO4·0.5H2O whiskers owing to lower supersaturation.

Abstract:The influence of Na2HPO4 center dot 12H(2)O on the hydrothermal formation of hemihydrate calcium sulfate (CaSO4-0.5H(2)O) whiskers from dihydrate calcium sulfate (CaSO4 center dot 2H(2)O) at 135 degrees C was investigated. Experimental results indicate that the addition of phosphorus accelerates the hydrothermal conversion of CaSO4 center dot 2H(2)O to CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O via the formation of Ca-3(PO4)(2) and produces CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O whiskers with thinner diameters and shorter lengths. Compared with the blank experiment without Na2HPO4 center dot 12H(2)O, the existence of minor amounts (8.65 x 10(-4)-4.36 x 10(-3) mol/L) of Na2HPO4 center dot 12H(2)O led to a decrease in the diameter of CaSO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O whiskers from 1.0-10.0 to 0.5-2.0 mu m and lengths from 70-300 to 50-200 mu m. Abstract:Nucleation is a combined result of thermodynamics and kinetics. Calcium sulfate dihydrate (DH), alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (alpha-HH), and calcium sulfate anhydrite (AH) all have the potential to precipitate when the solution is supersaturated with them at the same time. The effect of supersaturation on CaSO4 phase's occurrence was investigated in a 3.00 m CaCl2 solution at 91 degrees C to better understand the kinetics of competitive nucleation. In a wide range of supersaturations, DH and alpha-HH precipitated concomitantly without AR forming. The molar fraction of alpha-HH in the precipitate increased gradually from 47.23% to a summit of 98.91% when the supersaturation (S-HH) varied from 1.90 to 3.76 and then followed a dramatic decrease to 18.77% with a further increase in S-HH to 6.26. The predominant nucleation shifted from alpha-HH at the lower supersaturations to DH at the higher supersaturations. The crystallization rate evolution with supersaturation was responsible for the growth and decline of DH and alpha-HH in the precipitate.

Abstract:Herein, ultralong -CaSO(4)0.5H(2)O whiskers with an average length above 500 mu m and aspect ratios of 200-500 are hydrothermally produced employing trace amount (0.06 mg L-1) of cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) as the morphology modifier. The hydrothermal formation mechanisms of -CaSO(4)0.5H(2)O involving the initial nucleation of bassanite nanocrystals/nanorods and their subsequent self-assembly into long whiskers through oriented attachment are revealed for the first time. Experimental results indicate that CPAM is electrostatically adsorbed onto the initial bassanite nanorods and results in their near-neutral surfaces, favoring the assembly of the initial nanorods into larger aggregates, thus finally leading to the formation of ultralong -CaSO(4)0.5H(2)O whiskers with high aspect ratios. Moreover, -CaSO(4)0.5H(2)O whiskers are calcined to CaSO4 whiskers for the fabrication of polyvinyl chloride (PVC)/CaSO4 composites with a high impact strength and flexural strength of 42.0KJm(-2) and 53.6MPa, respectively, indicating that the mechanical properties of the PVC/CaSO4 composites could be significantly improved by these ultralong CaSO4 whiskers.

Abstract:In this paper, the influence of alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromides (CnH2n+1(CH3)3NBr, n = 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, abbreviated as ATAB) on the formation of alpha calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-CaSO4·0.5H2O) whiskers under a hydrothermal condition (135 °C, 3.0 h) was analyzed. Specifically, it focuses on cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (C16H33(CH3)3NBr, abbreviated as CTAB). The rising CTAB concentration from 0 to 9.2 × 10−4 mol·L−1 led to the increase of the average aspect ratio of α-CaSO4·0.5H2O whiskers from 80 to 430, since the selective adsorption of CTAB on the negatively-charged side facets of the whiskers inhibited the growth of the whiskers along the direction normal to the lateral facets. The further increase of CTAB concentration above the critical micelle concentration (abbreviated as CMC) showed little effect on the morphology of α-CaSO4·0.5H2O whiskers, considering that CTAB tended to form micelles instead of being adsorbed on the whisker surfaces. Similar phenomena were observed in other ATABs (n = 10, 12, 14, 18).

Abstract:The characteristics of CaSO4 clusters before the formation of crystalline calcium sulfate phases in supersaturated solutions remain uncertain. We have used extensive molecular dynamics simulations to thoroughly investigate structures and dynamic hydration of [(CaSO4)n]0 clusters in supersaturated solutions. There are three typical CaSO4 clusters, dissolved ion associated species, stable aggregates and CaSO4 precursors. For the dissolved ion associated species [(CaSO4)n]0 (n ≤ 7), the aggrgegation of these clusters accompanies with dehydration and cooperative hydration. The neutral [(CaSO4)n]0 (7 < n < 70) clusters are stable aggregates, and the size is about 30– 50 Å. the aggregation of these clusters also accompanies with dehydration of Ca2+, but the cooperative hydration between Ca2+ and SO42− does not change obviously. There are two kinds of dynamic hydration around Ca2+ in [(CaSO4)n]0 structures. Water molecules shared by Ca2+ and SO42− can be retained during the aggregation processes. The further aggregation of stable aggregates accompanying with ion coordination recombination will result in the formation of hydrous or anhydrous CaSO4 precursors ([(CaSO4)n]0 (n ≥ 70)) under different conditions, such as the supersaturation degree and temperature

Abstract:Hemihydrate calcium sulfate whiskers (HH-CSWs) were hydrothermally synthesized in a sulfuric acid solution at 120 °C for different holding times (20, 40, and 60 min). The phase structures and morphologies were characterized by XRD and SEM, respectively. The XRD pattern of the sample under 60 min was refined via the Rietveld fitting method. The structure models of the HH-CSW sample under a 60-min holding time was established based on Rietveld fitting results. No difference in the positions of diffraction peaks was determined. The as-prepared holding time increased the intensity and aspect ratio of the diffraction peaks of both samples. In the prepared HH-CSW structure, Ca–O polyhedron is a 12-sided polyhedron similar to that in the gypsum structure; the Ca atom is located in two positions in the one-unit cell; the H2O channel along the c-axis similar is O-shaped and bigger than that in hexagonal and monoclinic CaSO4·0.5H2O structures. Therefore, although the prepared HH-CSW crystals' structure are similar to that of the reported hexagonal and monoclinic CaSO4·0.5H2O structures, they are not the same. The formation mechanism of HH-CSW from flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum is discussed based on the analysis of gypsum structure.

Abstract:Magnesium oxysulfate (5Mg(OH)2·MgSO4·3H2O) whiskers with a diameter of 0.2–1.0μm and a length of 20–50μm were synthesized via the hydrothermal treatment of the slurry formed by mixing the MgSO4 and NaOH solutions at room temperature. The composition, morphology, structure and thermal behavior of the hydrothermal products were examined with X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and chemical analysis. The experimental results indicated that the process parameters, such as the concentration of the reactant, the dispersion of the Mg(OH)2 slurry and the temperature in hydrothermal treatment should be controlled carefully to synthesis 5Mg(OH)2·MgSO4·3H2O whiskers and to avoid the formation of the sectorial or granular impurities. 5Mg(OH)2·MgSO4·3H2O whiskers were decomposed gradually and converted finally to MgO particles after being heated in air at temperature up to 1050°C. Granular products formed if the heating temperature was above 320°C.

Abstract:An experimental procedure is presented for synthesis of the cantaloupe-like AlOOH superstructures by a hydrothermal process in aqueous solution of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The structure, morphology, purity and size of the products are investigated by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurement and Photoluminescent analysis (PL). A possible formation mechanism of the cantaloupe-like AlOOH superstructure is proposed based on the reaction dynamics process and template-assisted growth.

Abstract:The influence of Na2SO4 on the formation of ZnO whiskers was investigated in this paper. ZnO whiskers with aspect ratios of up to 50 were synthesized by dissolving epsilon-Zn(OH)(2) precursor in NaOH/Na2SO4 solution at room temperature, followed by aging of the resulting solution at 140 degrees C for 6h. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses revealed that SO42- ions were primarily adsorbed on the (1 0 0) plane of the ZnO whiskers via an outer-sphere complex configuration (O-H center dot center dot center dot O), thereby promoting the one-dimensional growth of ZnO whiskers along the c-axis. Abstract:The hydrothermal formation of hemi-hydrate calcium sulfate whiskers (CaSO4·0.5H2O) with high aspect ratio was discussed in this paper,using various gypsums (CaSO4·2H2O) as the raw materials.The influence of the properties of the gypsums on the morphology of the hydrothermal products was studied.The experimental results showed that hemi-hydrate calcium sulfate whiskers can be produced under hydrothermal condition using various gypsum precursors,including the gypsum agent,the industrial gypsums (the phosphogypsum,the desulfurized gypsum),and the synthetic gypsums formed by the reaction of calcium oxide or carbide slag with sulfuric acid.Rod-shaped hmemi-hydrate calcium sulfate whiskers with low aspect ratios were formed using the crystalline gypsum agent or impurity-bearing phosphogypsum as the raw materials.Hemi-hydrate calcium sulfate whiskers with high aspect ratios were formed using the desulfurized gypsum and the synthetic gypsums with poor crystallinity and less impurities as raw materials.
Formation of calcium sulfate through the aggregation of sub-3 nm anhydrous primary species

Abstract:The formation of crystalline calcium sulfate (CaSO4*xH2O) polymorphs from aqueous solutions is assumed to occur via a single-step process following the classical nucleation paradigm. However, although recent research contradicts this classical picture and indicates that CaSO4*2H2O forms at room temperature through multiple steps at different length and time-scales, these steps have so far not been quantified. By using in situ and fast time-resolved small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), we demonstrate that the nucleation and growth of CaSO4*2H2O involves at the very initial stages the formation of well-defined, primary species of < 3 nm in length (stage I). Stage II of the reaction is characterized by the arrangement of these primary species into domains, while in stage III these domains condense into larger aggregates. Based on volume fractions and electron density considerations we propose that the fast forming primary species from supersaturated aqueous CaSO4 solutions are composed of anhydrous Ca-SO4-cores. The first three stages of nucleation and aggregation of the primary species are followed by a final stage (stage IV), where the primary species grow within the aggregates, and eventually transform into gypsum (CaSO4*2H2O). This final stage was also confirmed through simultaneously collected wide-angle scattering (diffraction, WAXS) data, which clearly show the growth of gypsum during stage IV only. Our results demonstrate that CaSO4 formation is driven by the nucleation and aggregation of well-defined anhydrous Ca-SO4-cores that transform through hydration into gypsum through a complex nucleation and growth pathway.

Abstract:The effect of Mg(2+) on hydrothermal formation of α-CaSO4·0.5H2O whiskers with high aspect ratios was investigated in this paper. α-CaSO4·0.5H2O whiskers with a preferential growth along the c axis and an average aspect ratio up to 370 were synthesized using hydrothermal treatment of CaSO4·2H2O precursor in the presence of 1.97 × 10(-3) mol·L(-1) MgCl2. The preferential adsorption of Mg(2+) on the negative (200), (400), and (020) facets was confirmed by EDS, XPS, and zeta potential measurements. ATR-FTIR analysis revealed the ligand adsorption of Mg(2+) on the surface of α-CaSO4·0.5H2O. The doping of Mg(2+) in α-CaSO4·0.5H2O whiskers was confirmed by the XRD analysis. The experimental results indicated that the adsorption and doping of Mg(2+) promoted the 1-D growth of α-CaSO4·0.5H2O whiskers, leading to the formation of whiskers with high aspect ratios.
