Abstract:By reacting an asymmetric semi-rigid V-shaped linker H(3)dpob (H(3)dpob = 3-(2'3'-dicarboxylphenoxy)benzoic acid) and Ln(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O, nine novel Ln-based luminescent materials, from 1D to 3D, namely {[Eu.dpob).phen)]center dot H2O}(n) (1), {[Ln(Hdpob)(ox)(0.5)(H2O)(2)]}(n) (Ln = Eu(2), Sm(3), Gd(4), Tb(5)), {[Eu(dpob)(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5H(2)O}(n) (6), and {[Ln(dpob)(H2O)(2)]center dot mH(2)O} n (Ln = Eu(7), Gd(8), Tb(9), m = 0.5 for 7 and 9; m = 1 for 8) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; H(2)ox = oxalic acid) have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and PXRD. The crystal structures of 1-9 indicate that the coordination modes and coordination configuration of the H(3)dpob ligand play critical roles in the formation of the lanthanide architectures. Complexes 1-5 display multiple structures from double-stranded 1D chains to 4-connected 2D layers, through [Eu-2(CO2)(4)] or [Eu-2(CO2)(2)] dinuclear units with different auxiliary ligands. Complexes 6 and 7 are genuine supramolecular isomers which are induced by the concentration effect. 6 possesses a 2D kgd network with a Schlafli symbol of (4(3))(2)(4(6).6(6).8(3)) built from 6-connected [Eu-2(CO2)(2)] units and 3-connected H(3)dpob, which further connects to a (3,8)-connected tfz-d topology through O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. 7 displays a 3D (3,6)-connected rtl network with the Schlafli symbol (4.6(2))(2)(4(2).6(10).8(3)). Eu complexes 1, 2, 6, and 7 as well as Tb complexes 5 and 9 could provide intense and bright characteristic D-5(0) -> F-7(J)/D-5(4) -> F-7(J) red/green luminescence under UV excitation in the solid state at 298 K and 77 K. The calculated singlet and triplet energies of H(3)dpob as well as phen and H(2)ox ligands indicate that these ligands act as antenna chromophores that are able to efficiently absorb and transfer energy to Ln(III) ions. In complexes 1, 2 and 5, ligand-to-metal energy transfer processes could occur in mixed ligands. However, these processes occurred in a single H3dpob ligand in complexes 6 and 7. With careful adjustment of the relative concentration of the lanthanide ions and by varying the excitation wavelengths of {[Gd0.92Eu0.04Tb0.04(dpob)(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5H(2)O} n (10), tunable yellow (CIE coordinate: 0.51, 0.40) to white-light (CIE coordinate: 0.33, 0.34) emission has been obtained.

Abstract:Using five Schiff base ligands (E)-N-(pyridine-2-yl) (CH═NPhR) (where R = 4–CH3, L1; 2,6-(CH3)2, L2; 2,4,6-(CH3)3, L3; 2,6-(C2H5)2, L4; 2,6-(i-C3H7)2, L5), nine Zn(II)/Cd(II) complexes, namely, Zn1–Zn3, Cd1, Cd2, Cd3a, Cd3b, Cd4, and Cd5, have been successfully synthesized. The structures of the Zn(II)/Cd(II) complexes have been established by single crystal X-ray diffraction and further physically characterized by 1H NMR, FT–IR, and elemental analysis. The crystal structures of these complexes indicate that the structures of ligand and anions can directly influence the formation of 1D → 3D supramolecular metal–organic frameworks (SMOFs) via C–H···O/C–H···Cl hydrogen bonds and π···π interactions. Upon irradiation with UV light, the nine Zn(II)/Cd(II) complexes display deep blue emissions of 401–436 nm in acetonitrile solution and light blue or bluish green emissions of 485–575 nm in the solid state, respectively. Abstract:Four novel compounds {[In(FDA)(HFDA)-(H2O4] center dot 2H(2)O} (Inl.) and I [Ln(2)(FDA)(2)(H2O)(10)]center dot FDA center dot 6H(2)O} (Ln = Dy2, Eu3, Gd4) have been hydrothermally synthesized by using the ligand furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H(2)FDA). Driven by hydrogen bonding and pi...pi stacking, In1 displays a supramolecular metal-organic framework (MOF) with 6-connected pcu topology. Isostructural Dy2, Eu3, and exhibit bnn topological structures with the Schlafli symbol of Gd4 possess one-dimensional "wave-like" chains and further (4(6).6(4)) via a hydrogen bonding network. The triplet state (T-1 = 22371 cm(-1)) of H(2)FAD studied by compound Gd4 indicates that the energy transition from the H(2)FDA ligand to the Eu3 ion in compound Eu3 is efficient but inefficient to the Dy3+ ion in compound Dy2. Interestingly, the uncoordinated carbonyl group of compound In1 can sensitize Ln(3+) ions to obtain Dy3+@In1 and Eu3+@In1 materials for enhancing luminescence. The possible sensitization mechanism is studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and surface photovoltage spectroscopy. When the Eu3 ion is increased from 0.0 to 1.6 mu M in aqueous solution, compound In1 exhibits a distinguishable luminescence color change from blue to red with a fast detection time (<2 min), and the ratio of luminescence intensity at 617 nm to that at 408 rim (I-617/I-408) enhances linearly with a low detection limit of 0.87 mu M. Additionally, with careful adjustment of lanthanide(III) ions, white-light emission material could be achieved with metal content of Dy0.87Eu0.13.

Abstract:Three metal-organic complexes Cd(HBIDC)(phen)(2)center dot 4H(2)O (1), [Cd(BIC)(Phen)](n) (2) and {[Eu(HBIDC)(H2BIDC)(H2O)]center dot H2O}(n) H2O) 1 (3) (H3BIDC=benzimidazole-5,6-dicarboxylic acid, H2BIC=benzimidazole-6-carboxylic acid, phen=1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectrum, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. With similar reaction conditions, reactions of the same ligand with different metal cations selected from different blocks (d-block and f-block) result in different coordination modes of carboxylate groups and final frameworks of complexes 1 and 3. The decarboxylation was observed in complex 2 and resulted in the formation of BIC2- ligand. Complexes 1-3 have intense fluorescent emissions at room temperature in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solution and in the solid-state, which indicate they are potential fluorescence materials. Abstract:Six 5-coordinate 2,6-bis(imino)pyridine metal complexes, [2,6-(ArN=CMe)2C5H3NMCl2 center dot nCH3CN] (Ar = 4-MeC6H4, M = Zn, n = 0.5, Zn1, M = Cd, n = 1, Cd1; Ar = 2,6-Et2C6H3, M = Zn, n = 0.5, Zn2, M = Cd, n = 0.5, Cd2; Ar = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, M = Zn, n = 1, Zn3, M = Cd, n = 1, Cd3), were synthesized in acetonitrile by the reactions of the corresponding bis(imino)pyridines with ZnCl2 or CdCl2 center dot 2.5H2O, respectively. The structures of Zn1-Zn3 and Cd1-Cd3 were determined by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In all complexes, the ligand is tridentate with further coordination by two chlorides, resulting in a distorted trigonal bipyramid. All complexes self-assemble through hydrogen bonding interactions to form a 3-D supramolecular structure. At 298 K in dichloromethane, all complexes have blue luminescent emissions at 405-465 nm, which can be attributed to ligand-centered * transitions. The zinc and cadmium centers play a key role in enhancing fluorescent emission of the ligands.

Abstract:The luminescence properties of europium and dysprosium ions co-doped zinc–aluminoborosilicate glasses were analyzed. A combination of blue, green, yellow and red emission bands was shown for these glasses, and white light emission could be observed under UV light excitation. The color of luminescence could be adjusted by varying the proportions of europium and dysprosium. The concentration quenching effect was also investigated in this paper. Furthermore, the reduction of Eu3+→Eu2+ in air at high temperature was observed in the zinc–aluminoborosilicate glasses.

Abstract:Nanorod-like Zn2GeO4 and diverse Zn2GeO4:xEu nanostructures were controllably synthesized via a surfactant-free hydrothermal route. Detailed composition and morphology were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The influence of Eu3+-doping on the phase and size transition of Zn2GeO4 nanocrystals was investigated, and a possible Zn2GeO4:xEu crystal growth mechanism, which is ascribed to hetero-valence ion doping, is proposed. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra indicate that Zn2GeO4:xEu phosphors give both the bluish-white emission from the Zn2GeO4 host and orange-red emission of Eu3+ ions. The morphologies of calcined Zn2GeO4:xEu were studied and their PL properties were also investigated. The results suggested that the emission of both the Zn2GeO4 host and Eu3+ ions can be adjusted via tuning the concentration of Eu3+-doping, excitation wavelengths and calcination schedules of the Zn2GeO4:xEu nanocrystals. Therefore, Zn2GeO4:Eu nanocrystals with multi-color as well as white light emission displayed a potential application for white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:An effective method to obtain white-light emitters by encapsulating a single lanthanide metal ion into an alkaline earth metal-organic coordination polymers is presented. Two novel complexes SrL(H2O) and BaL(DMF) (L = 1,1',1 ''-(benzene-1,3,5-triyl)tripiperidine-4-carboxylic acid) were synthesized, and lanthanide metal ions were encapsulated by coordination with their active sites. The CIE coordinates of the modified complexes are tuned along two separate trajectories by regulating the content of either Eu3+ or Tb3+. The trajectories of the complexes containing Eu3+ pass through the white region in the CIE diagram. Different from the traditional idea of overlaying three emission colors, white-light emission of the modified complexes is explored by encapsulating only Eu3+ into the blue-light emission coordination polymers to decrease the number of unmanageable variables. Luminescence measurements show that the complexes can specifically identify Fe3+ with almost complete emission quenching, which is not observed in the presence of other metal ions. Chemically Tunable, All‐Inorganic‐Based White‐Light Emitting 0D–1D Heterostructures

Abstract:In this study, one‐dimensional (1D) Mn2+‐doped ZnS (ZnS:Mn) nanowires (NWs) are initially created with a unique optical signature. Specifically, these nanostructures couple (i) ZnS defect‐related self‐activated emission spanning from wavelengths of 400–500 nm with (ii) Mn2+ dopant‐induced emission centered at ≈580 nm. These doped ZnS nanostructures are initially fabricated for the first time via a template‐based coprecipitation approach followed by a postsynthesis annealing process. Novel 1D–0D heterostructures are subsequently formed, incorporating ZnS:Mn2+ NWs and 2‐amino‐ethanethiol (AET)‐CdSe quantum dots (QDs), by assembling annealed ZnS:Mn2+ NWs with AET‐capped CdSe QDs as building blocks via a simple technique, involving physical sonication and stirring. Optical analyses of the heterostructures are consistent with charge (hole) and energy transfer‐induced quenching of ZnS self‐activated emission coupled with hole transfer‐related quenching of Mn2+ emission by the QDs. The CdSe QD emission itself is impacted by competing charge (electron) and energy transfer processes occurring between the underlying ZnS host and the immobilized CdSe QDs. Chromaticity analysis reveals the significance of controlling both QD coverage density and Mn2+ dopant ratios in predictably influencing the observed color of our all‐inorganic heterostructures. For example, white‐light emitting behavior is especially prominent in composites, simultaneously characterized by (i) a 2.22% Mn2+ doping level and (ii) a molar compositional ratio of [ZnS:Mn2+]:[AET‐capped CdSe QDs] of 1:1.5. Moreover, using these independent chemical “knobs,” it is possible to reliably tune for a significant shift within the composites from “cold‐white” (9604 K) to “warm‐white” (4383 K) light emission. A novel 0D–1D heterostructure consisting of a one‐dimensional Mn2+‐doped ZnS nanotube motif decorated with CdSe quantum dots (QDs) has been synthesized. To controllably tune the observed white‐light emission, the charge and energy transfer within this system has been rationally manipulated by systematic variations of not only the Mn2+ doping ratio but also the extent of QD loading.

Abstract:Three isostructural lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs, Ln = Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+) containing P-terphenyl-2,2″,4,4″-tetracarboxylate ligand (H4L) with red, green, and blue luminescence were solvothermally synthesized. Thus, a series of mixed Ln-MOFs, (EuxTbyDy1-x-y)(HL)(H2O)(DEF) (DEF, N,N-diethylformamide), were designed and obtained, which displayed highly temperature-tuned emission in the visible region, including white light emission. Additionally, tunable luminescence can also be achieved by changing the excitation wavelength.

Abstract:In our previous work, a family of isostructural lanthanide metal-organic frameworks, [Ln(3)(L)(3)(H2O)(2)]center dot(H3O)(3)(H2O)(4)center dot(DMF)(3) (abbreviated as Ln(3)(L)(3)(H2O)(2), Ln = Eu, Tb, Sm, Dy and Gd) were synthesized under solvothermal conditions based on a semi-rigid tetravalent carboxylic tetracarboxylic acid (3,3',5,5'-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid, H4L). Due to the good sensitization of the H4L ligand, Ln(3)(L)(3)(H2O)(2) all show the intense characteristic emission bands of the corresponding lanthanide ions. The optical properties of Ln(3)(L)(3)(H2O)(2) can be easily tuned by doping different lanthanide ions into the same host frameworks. Moreover, white-light emission can be successfully realized for four kinds of codoped compounds Tb0.005Eu0.005Gd0.990L, Dy0.006Eu0.006Gd0.988L, Dy0.0002Sm0.001Gd0.9988L and Tb0.002Sm0.006Gd0.992L (the value refer to the starting molar ratios of Ln(3+) ions). Abstract:The new heterometallic coordination polymers [Ln(2)Zn(2)(2,5-pydc)(5)(H2O)(2)]center dot 4H(2)O (Ln=Sm (1) and Ln=Eu (2); 2,5-pydc: 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid) were synthesized from the reaction of Ln(2)O(3) and Zn(CH3COO)(2)center dot 2H(2)O with corresponding ligands under hydrothermal conditions. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Structural analyses reveals that complexes 1 and 2 are isomorphous and crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c. In complexes 1 and 2, there are two kinds of coordination modes for the 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid ligand. Ln and Zn are connected to form a two dimensional (2D) layer structure by coordination mode I of 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid and the layers further link to each other to form an intricate three dimensional (3D) network by coordination mode II. In addition, the luminescent properties and thermogravimetric (TG) analyses of the title complexes were analyzed in detail. The luminescence of Sm and Eu in these complexes was greatly improved because of the introduction of Zn.
Mixed-Metal and Mixed-Ligand Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on 2,6-Naphthalenedicarboxylate: Thermally Activated Sensitization and White-Light Emission.

Abstract:Trivalent lanthanide ions (Ln3+) hold an exceptional position in the field of optoelectronic materials due to their atomic-like emission spectra and long luminescence lifetimes. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers are particularly suited as luminescent materials due to their structural diversity and ease of functionalization both at bridging ligands and/or metal centers. In this contribution, we present a series of mixed-metal Ln3+/Eu3+ (Ln = La, Gd) and mixed-ligand (2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate (ndc2-) and 4-aminonaphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylate (andc2-)) MOFs belonging to three different structural types, with emissions spanning most of the visible region, thereby constituting favorable materials for color tuning and white-light emission. We investigate the thermal stability and photophysical properties of the synthesized materials with regard to their metal and ligand doping levels and structural type, where we discuss excimer and monomer emission. The photophysical study, involving both steady-state and time-resolved luminescence measurements, allows us to discuss the possible energy migration and Eu3+ sensitization pathways that take place within these materials following ligand excitation. Low-temperature luminescence studies led us to determine the energies of the ligand-based excited states and investigate their participation in thermally activated energy transfer mechanisms within the studied lattices. We observe emission quantum yields of up to 87% for the Eu3+-doped materials, while their ligand- and metal-doped counterparts show decreased quantum yields of up to 17%. Finally, we attempt fine color tuning by carefully adjusting the doping levels to achieve yellow and white-light emission.

Abstract:Eight new ZnⅡ-YⅢ and ZnⅡ-LnⅢ heterometallic Schiff base complexes:MZnL2（NO3）3（M = Y（1）,La（2）,Pr（3）,Nd（4）,Eu（5）,Gd（6）,Dy（7）,Er（8）;L = 2-（（（2-（imidazo[l,5-α]pyridin-3-yl）phenyl）imino）methyl）-6-methoxyphenol）,have been rationally synthesized under solvothermal conditions and characterized by IR,elemental analyses（EA）,single-crystal X-ray diffraction,and powder XRD.Furthermore,luminescence in the visible region for solids 1 8 suggested zinc/ligand-centered emission at room temperature.

Abstract:With the presence of biopolymer-sodium alginate as additive, Eu-doped ZnO (zinc oxide) urchins consisting of nanorods were synthesized through a hydrothermal route. X-ray diffraction pattern makes evident the absence of phase other than würtzite ZnO. Upon excited by 325nm xenon laser, such nanostructured Eu-doped ZnO urchins emit white light, which originates from the luminescence of ZnO and the intra-4f transitions of Eu3+ ions. Besides acting as stabilizing agent, sodium alginate may also sensitize the Eu3+ ions in the nanostructures and facilitate the energy transfer from the host to Eu3+ ions.
