Abstract:ZnO nanowires were successfully fabricated by using the hydrothermal method in the existence of the poly ethylene glycol (PEG) with the molecular weight of 200. The experimental results exhibit that the ZnO nanowires with the diameter of ~30nm and the length of ten micrometers. PL spectra show a weak ultraviolet emission and an intense broad visible emission band for as-grown and annealed samples. These visible emission bands exhibit red-shifts from green (545nm) to yellow (580nm) and blue-shifts from yellow (580nm) to green (520nm) by annealing at aerobic or anaerobic environment, it indicates that the defect types are changed by annealed at different environment. Additionally, the red-shifts (520nm) and blue-shifts (580) can match up the bimodal lorentzian fitting (520nm and 583nm) of as-growth, which suggest that the visible emission band (545nm) is closely related to oxygen defects. The oxygen atomic can enter into the crystal lattice of ZnO and decrease the oxygen vacancy in air or oxygen, whereas, more oxygen vacancy defects is gave rise in vacuum annealed. We guess the energy levels of the intrinsic defects in ZnO nanowire maybe like that: the electrons of Zni defects compound with holes of VZn, Oi and OZn levels and conform to the yellow emission, and the green emission corresponds to the electron transition from the association defects deep donor level to the valence band.

Abstract:Organic color-centers (OCCs) on single-wall carbon nanotubes are quantum defects that demonstrate intriguing near-infrared emission properties with potential for bioimaging, chemical sensing, and quantum communication. Many of these applications will require electrical pumping rather than optical excitation to deterministically access the near-infrared emission properties of OCCs, though this has yet to be achieved. In this work, we report experimental observation of near-infrared electroluminescence from 4-nitroaryl OCCs intentionally introduced on (6,5)-single-wall carbon nanotubes that are aligned across a pair of gold electrodes. Spatially correlated photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectroscopy reveal direct evidence of the localized electroluminescence from the OCCs on the semiconducting nanotube hosts. The electroluminescence intensity displays an exponential dependence on the source-drain current, suggesting that impact excitation by unipolar carriers at the quantum defects is the origin of the observed emission. These electroluminescent quantum defects may pave the way to enable on-chip integration for potential applications of OCCs in display, sensor, and spin-based devices, as well as other quantum technologies.

Abstract:A comprehensive picture of the photoluminescence mechanism of various chemically derived graphene oxides is given. In particular, the strong blue emission at about 430 nm is correlated with carbon defect states formed during the reduction of graphene oxide and the enhanced long‐wavelength tuning photoluminescence from functionalized reduced graphene oxide with the enhanced sp2 cluster size effect via resonant energy transfer.

Abstract:The mechanism for the photoluminescence (PL) emission from gold nanoparticles has attracted considerable attention for many years. However, there is an important gap between small nanoclusters (similar to 2 nm) and larger plasmonic particles (similar to 50 nm). In this work, using defocused imaging technique, we investigate the PL properties of gold nanospheres (15-20 nm in diameter) on a single particle level. Photoblinking and photobleaching phenomena are both observed. We notice that although these nanospheres can support surface plasmon resonance at similar to 515 nm, they emit at similar to 630 nm (excited by 532 nm), which is obviously plasmon-independent. The observed defocused images (DIs) exhibit isotropy first and then either transform into anisotropy or vanish rapidly. Surprisingly, the Dls can change their emission pattern within one single nanosphere during the tracing time. All these PL properties suggest a multiple-dipole emission model. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images demonstrate that these nanospheres are polycrystalline containing multiple small crystal domains (similar to 3 nm). We believe that these small domains divide the particle into different clusters and give rise to the photoblinking behavior and rotary DIs. The presented PL mechanism links gold nanoclusters and single-crystal nanorods, which could be helpful in understanding the origins of photoblinking and the luminescent properties from metallic nanoparticles. In addition, these water-soluble gold nanospheres provide new opportunities for biological labels and light-emitting sources in nanophotonics.

Abstract:Red-shifted emitting states in carbon nanotubes, introduced by chemically stable and tunable covalently-bound dopants,1,2 are gaining attention for their potential to boost photoluminescence quantum yields,1,2 add new functionality,3,4 and serve as single photon emitters.5 These sites present a rich array of new photophysics, with dependences on specific functionalization chemistry and environmental interactions. As examples, we will present low-T photoluminescence (PL) probes of defect-state electronic structure for sp 3 defects introduced by aryl functionalization and compare to quantum chemical theory and to earlier studies on oxygen-introduced defects.6 Environmental effects on both low-T spectroscopy and ensemble-level relaxation dynamics7 will also be presented. In particular, dielectric environment is found to significantly impact PL relaxation times in contrasting ways, enabling further understanding of relaxation mechanisms and how they relate to spectroscopic observables. Finally, control over chemical functionality and dielectric environment will be shown as routes for optimizing single photon emission behaviors, in agreement with earlier theoretical results.8 References 1. Abstract:Carbon nanodots (CDs), a new star in the carbon nanomaterials family, have been demonstrated to show strong luminescence, and can meet the needs of large-scale production for biological and medical applications due to their low toxicity and biocompatibility. However, their luminescence mechanisms, such as color tuning and strong excitation-dependent luminescence, are still unclear. Herein, we present a state-of-the-art understanding and manipulating luminescence in CDs by changing their environmental states and using multiple spectroscopic methods as well as the first-principles theoretical calculations. Our study reveals that the edge-carbon atoms and incorporated nitrogen atoms play critical roles in the luminescence mechanisms of CDs, and thus paves the way for manipulation of luminescence in CDs.

Abstract:Abstract Due to complex structure and surface functionalities, photoluminescence mechanisms of Carbon Dots are unknown, and it is challenging to synthesize Carbon Dots to achieve the desired optical properties. Herein, Carbon Dots simultaneously exhibiting high-color-purity (FWHM~24 nm) long wavelength one-photon fluorescence emission at 620 nm and NIR induced two-photon fluorescence emission at 630 and 680 nm are prepared by edge amino protonation treatment. Systematic analysis reveals that the protonation of 2,3-diaminophenazine changes the molecular state of Carbon Dots, decreases the photon transition band gap, and triggers red fluorescence emission with the dramatically narrowed peak width. As the oxidation products of reactant o-phenylendiamine, the emergence of 2,3-diaminophenazine as a photoluminescence determiner suggests that fluorophore products of precursor conversion are viable determinants of the desired luminescence properties of Carbon Dots. This work shows a new way for predicting and controlling photoluminescence properties of Carbon Dots, and may guide the development of tunable Carbon Dots for a broad range of applications.

Optical Emission from C60-molecule-coupled Si Nanocrystallites

Abstract:Using C60 molecule as a kind of surface-passivated agent to modify the electronic structure of Si nanocrystallites in porous silicon, we disclose that this kind of C60/nanocrystalline Si coupling system can show a strong blue emission at approximately 460 nm when stored in air for more than one year. After a full characterization of the photoluminescence properties, we propose a luminescent center in the SiOx layer at the surface of a Si nanocrystallite. It is a pair consisting of an oxygen vacancy and an interstitial oxygen. The interstitial oxygen also forms a peroxy linkage with a neighboring lattice oxygen. Radiative recombination of carriers photogenerated from Si nanocrystallite cores in the luminescent centers results in the observed blue photoluminescence. Neutron irradiation experiments support our assignment of the blue emission mechanism. This work improves the understanding of the origin of blue emission from silicon/oxygen-related nanostructured materials.

New Mechanism for Field Emission from Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:A quantum mechanical simulation is carried out to investigate the field emission mechanism of a 1μm long (5,5) single-walled carbon nanotube under realistic experimental conditions. Our simulation reveals that the mechanism of field emission is the combination of two effects: (1) shielding of the electric field along the tube away from the tube tip, which leads to the well-known field enhancement but only 1/4 of that expected from classical theory; (2) field penetration at the tip resulting in the lowering of the work function or potential barrier, which is recognized as another significant factor contributing to the strong electron emission. The combination of (1) and (2) gives an emission current that agrees with recent experiments.
Electroluminescence from Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes with Quantum Defects

Abstract:Individual single-walled carbon nanotubes with covalent sidewall defects have emerged as a class of photon sources whose photoluminescence spectra can be tailored by the carbon nanotube chirality and the attached functional group/molecule. Here we present electroluminescence spectroscopy data from single-tube devices based on (7, 5) carbon nanotubes, functionalized with dichlorobenzene molecules, and wired to graphene electrodes. We observe electrically generated, defect-induced emissions that are controllable by electrostatic gating and strongly red-shifted compared to emissions from pristine nanotubes. The defect-induced emissions are assigned to excitonic and trionic recombination processes by correlating electroluminescence excitation maps with electrical transport and photoluminescence data. At cryogenic conditions, additional gate-dependent emission lines appear, which are assigned to phonon-assisted hot-exciton electroluminescence from quasi-levels. Similar results were obtained with functionalized (6, 5) nanotubes. We also compare functionalized (7, 5) electroluminescence data with photoluminescence of pristine and functionalized (7, 5) nanotubes redox-doped using gold(III) chloride solution. This work shows that electroluminescence excitation is selective toward neutral defect-state configurations with the lowest transition energy, which in combination with gate-control over neutral versus charged defect-state emission leads to high spectral purity.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) hold promising application in electronics and optoelectronics because of their excellent photo-stability, tunable photoluminescence and high quantum yield. However, the absorption and emission mechanisms have been debated for years. Here, by employing time-dependent density functional theory, we demonstrate that the different N-doping types and positions give rise to different absorption and emission behaviors, which successfully addresses the inconsistency observed in different experiments. Specifically, center doping creates mid-states, rendering non-fluorescence, while edge N-doping modulates the energy levels of excited states and increases the radiation transition probability, thus enhancing fluorescence strength. More importantly, the even hybridization of frontier orbitals between edge N atoms and GQDs leads to a blue-shift of both absorption and emission spectra, while the uneven hybridization of frontier orbitals induces a red-shift. Solvent effects on N-GQDs are further explored by the conductor-like screening model and it is found that strong polarity of the solvent can cause a red-shift and enhance the intensity of both absorption and emission spectra.

Abstract:Although several theories have been proposed, the mechanism of complex photoluminescence in carbon dots (CNDs) is a central quest till date. This report presents pH dependent steady state and time resolved spectroscopy study which identifies a possible origin of the complex photoluminescence in CNDs. The multiple emissive species created by the excited state protonation-deprotonation reaction at certain pH gives rise to inhomogeneous broadening and consequently excitation dependent multicolour emission. The origin of the excited state dynamics is attributed to the significant change of the proton dissociation between ground and excited state. We present a new model on protonation dynamics and show how it affects the emissive states in CNDs.
A New Mechanism Responsible for the Enhancement of Local Electric Field on the Surface of Emitting Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) films exhibit excellent electron emission properties at very low fields. This has been attributed to the high aspect ratio of CNTs, i.e. their emitting surface can have high local field due to geometrical enhancement. It is found that a new mechanism can be responsible for the enhancement of the local field on the emitting surface of CNTs. This results from the space charge in the vacuum gap, which is readily generated due to the high emission current density, of CNTs. Details are given of both experimental and theoretical studies of this effect. The mechanism also accounts for the distinct nonlinearity in Fowler-Nordheim plots often observed with CNTs. The implication of the technical application of our findings is also included.

Abstract:Four groups of Si nanostructures with and without beta-SiC nanocrystals were fabricated for clarifying the origin of a blue emission with a double-peak structure at 417 and 436 nm. Spectral analyses and microstructural observations show that the blue emission is related to the existence of excess Si atoms in these Si nanostructures. The energy levels of electrons in Si nanocrystals with vacancy defects formed from the excess Si atoms are calculated and the characteristics of the obtained density of states coincide with the observed double-peak emission. The present work provides a possible mechanism of the blue emission in various Si nanostructures.

Abstract:Photoluminescence properties of ZnO nanorod arrays decorated by Ag nanoparticles have been studied. It was found the enhancement of near-band-edge emission of ZnO was attributed to the giant local electronic fields of Ag nanoparticles, which was confirmed by annealing treatment and surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectra. The enhancement of visible emission band was due to the exciton-localized surface plasmons coupling effect.

Abstract:ZnO commonly exhibits luminescence in the visible spectral range due to different intrinsic defects. In order to study defect emissions, photoluminescence from ZnO nanostructures prepared by different methods (needles, rods, shells) was measured as a function of excitation wavelength and temperature. Under excitation at 325 nm, needles exhibited orange-red defect emission, rods exhibited yellow defect emission, while shells exhibited green defect emission. Obvious color change from orange to green was observed for needles with increasing excitation wavelengths, while nanorods (yellow) showed smaller wavelength shift and shells (green) showed no significant spectral shift. Reasons for different wavelength dependences are discussed.

Abstract:Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes show extraordinary electronic and optical properties, such as high charge carrier mobilities and diameter-dependent near-infrared photoluminescence. The introduction of sp3 defects in the carbon lattice of these nanotubes creates new electronic states that result in even further red-shifted photoluminescence with longer lifetimes and higher photoluminescence yield. These luminescent defects or organic color centers can be tuned chemically by controlling the precise binding configuration and the electrostatic properties of the attached substituents. This review covers the basic photophysics of luminescent sp3 defects, synthetic methods for their controlled formation and discusses their application as near-infrared single-photon emitters at room temperature, in electroluminescent devices, as versatile optical sensors, and as fluorophores for bioimaging and potential super-resolution microscopy.

Abstract:Although the size- and shape-induced blueshift in the photoluminescence and photoabsorption of nanostructured ZnO has been extensively investigated, the underlying mechanism remains yet unclear. Here we show that theoretical reproduction of the observed trends clarifies that the blueshift originates from the Hamiltonian perturbation due to the broken-bond-induced local strain and quantum trapping and electron-phonon coupling in the surface skin up to two atomic layers in depth while bonds in the core interior retain their bulk nature. The extent of the blue shift depends on the tunable fraction of undercoordinated atoms in the surface skin. Therefore, the quantum confinement effect is indeed more "superficial" than first thought [H. Winn, OE Mag. 8, 10 (2005)].
