Abstract:Nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon dots (N,P-C-dots) were prepared by microwave-assisted thermolysis of N-phosphonomethyl aminodiacetic acid and ethylenediamine. N,P-C-dots exhibit bright blue fluorescence with an emission maximum at 418 nm. Experimental results show that they have uniform dispersion with the average size of 3.3 nm, a fluorescence decay time of 7.8 ns, a quantum yield of 17.5 %, low toxicity, and good stability. All these make them an excellent choice as a fluorescent nanomaterial for use in cellular imaging.

Abstract:Highly bright-fluorescent N (nitrogen), S (sulfur) co-doped graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were synthesized through an modified hydrothermal method. The doped GQDs are smaller than 10 nm in size in average and stable in aqueous solution. Unlike many reports on graphene oxide (GO), the as-synthesized doped GQDs exhibit bright blue photoluminescence (PL) emission and the emission wavelength is excitation-independent. The intriguling results indicate that GQDs may have great potential in the optic and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:The synthesis of water-soluble nitrogen-doped carbon dots has received great attention, due to their wide applications in oxygen reduction reaction, cell imaging, sensors, and drug delivery. Herein, nitrogen-doped, carbon-rich, highly photoluminescent carbon dots have been synthesized for the first time from ammonium citrate under hydrothermal conditions. The obtained nitrogen-doped carbon dots possess bright blue luminescence, short fluorescence lifetime, pH-sensitivity and excellent stability at a high salt concentration. They have potential to be used for pH sensors, cell imaging, solar cells, and photocatalysis.

Abstract:Sulfur-doped carbon dots (S-CDs) with a quantum yield (QY) of 5.5% and nitrogen, sulfur co-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) with a QY of 54.4% were synthesized, respectively, via the same hydrothermal route using α-lipoic acid as the carbon source. The obtained S-CDs and N,S-CDs had similar sizes but different optical features. The QY of N,S-CDs was gradually enhanced when extending the reaction time to increase the nitrogen content. After careful characterization of these CDs, the doped nitrogen element was believed to be in the form of C=N and C-N bonds which enhanced the fluorescence efficiency significantly. Meanwhile, the co-doped sulfur element was found to be synergistic for nitrogen doping in N,S-CDs. The optimal N,S-CDs were successfully employed as good multicolor cell imaging probes due to their fine dispersion in water, excitation-dependent emission, excellent fluorescence stability and low toxicity. Besides, such N,S-CDs showed a wide detection range and excellent accuracy as fluorescent sensors for Fe(3+) ions.

Abstract:Nitrogen-rich quantum dots (N-dots) were serendipitously synthesized in methanol or aqueous solution at a reaction temperature as low as 50 °C. These N-dots have a small size (less than 10 nm) and contain a high percentage of the element nitrogen, and are thus a new member of quantum-dot family. These N-dots show unique and distinct photoluminescence properties with an increasing percentage of nitrogen compared to the neighboring carbon dots. The photoluminescence behavior was adjusted from blue to green simply through variation of the reaction temperature. Furthermore, the detailed mechanism of N-dot formation was also proposed with the trapped intermediate. These N-dots have also shown promising applications as fluorescent ink and biocompatible staining in C. elegans.

Abstract:A facile strategy is reported to synthesize nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with fluorescence emission by a one-step hydrothermal treatment under different temperatures with dicyanodiamide and citric acid as precursor materials of nitrogen and carbon sources, respectively. The as-produced N-CQDs display green or blue fluorescence under the ultraviolet lamp was controlled by the reaction temperature. Consequently, the as-prepared sample reacted at 200 ° C (N-CQDs-200), within the range of 3 nm, exhibits blue fluorescence excited at 365 nm irradiation with the maximum quantum yield (QY) of ca. 30.6%. Moreover, the N-CQDs possess rich functional groups such as nitrous groups and multiple oxygenated groups, which result in a favorable solubility in most hydrophilic solvents. From the characterization and discussion of TEM, HRTEM, FT-IR, XPS, Raman and UV-Vis, it is illustrated that the fluorescence performance was largely related to the nanomorphology, nitrogen concentration, multi-surface emission sites and various forms of transitions derived from the nitrogen doping. With the excellent fluorescence performance and the favorable solubility in solvents, the products are potentially suitable for monitoring organics.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) hold promising application in electronics and optoelectronics because of their excellent photo-stability, tunable photoluminescence and high quantum yield. However, the absorption and emission mechanisms have been debated for years. Here, by employing time-dependent density functional theory, we demonstrate that the different N-doping types and positions give rise to different absorption and emission behaviors, which successfully addresses the inconsistency observed in different experiments. Specifically, center doping creates mid-states, rendering non-fluorescence, while edge N-doping modulates the energy levels of excited states and increases the radiation transition probability, thus enhancing fluorescence strength. More importantly, the even hybridization of frontier orbitals between edge N atoms and GQDs leads to a blue-shift of both absorption and emission spectra, while the uneven hybridization of frontier orbitals induces a red-shift. Solvent effects on N-GQDs are further explored by the conductor-like screening model and it is found that strong polarity of the solvent can cause a red-shift and enhance the intensity of both absorption and emission spectra.

Abstract:Carbon dots have shown a broad application prospect in the fields of sensing and detection, biological imaging, and optoelectronic devices. However, it is still challenging to adopt a simple and green synthesis route and to develop new precursor systems to prepare full-color luminescent carbon dots. This study proposes a mechanism for fine regulation of carbon dot fluorescence spectra based on surface states of CN, COC, and OH, among which CN play a major role in long wavelength emission while COC and OH are responsible for the blue shift of emission wavelength. Using 4,4-bipyridine and p-phenylenediamine as precursors in safe and environmentally friendly glycol and water as solvents for the first time, the fine spectral carbon dots with full spectrum luminescence from purple (441 nm) to red (627 nm) were successfully synthesized by simply changing the composition of the reaction solvent and using a short reaction time. Compared with other reports on regulating polychromatic carbon dots, our method is more refined and has a wider distribution of luminescent colors. In addition, the obtained carbon dots based on such surface state luminescence mechanism have shown good application prospects in specific detection of Fe3+and cell labeling.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDots), a class of environmentally friendly carbon-based luminescent nanomaterial, have been applied in a wide variety of fields, including bioimaging and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Prior to these applications, however, CDots usually require modifications because some of its limitations (e.g., the aggregation-induced luminescence quenching) make it difficult to apply in solid state. In order to realize CDots-based multiple applications simultaneously, this paper examines how CDots with a strong greenish-yellow fluorescence in both dispersed and aggregated states are prepared by microwaveassisted heating salicylic acid and thiourea. Based on control testing and the analysis of density functional theory calculations, S element from thiourea is doped into CDots and proves to be critical in governing the photoluminescence (PL) emission color. Featured with excellent biocompatibility and photostability, the dispersed CDots with photoluminescence quantum yields (32%) are able to function as a biological imaging reagent in vitro and in vivo without any side effect. Furthermore, the aggregated CDots also exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields (26%) and remarkable resistance to organic solvent. These advantages will ensure that S-doped CDots can be applied as a color conversion layer so that white LEDs with different Commission International de L'Eclariage coordinates and tunable color temperature can be fabricated. Abstract:Two kinds of carbon quantum dots, C-dots-160 and C-dots-200 with different fluorescence luminescence behaviors were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method at 160 and 200 °C, respectively, using ammonium citrate as the raw material. The relationship between the microstructure of the C-dots and the fluorescence emission behavior was investigated. Results indicate that an increase of synthesis temperature introduces more oxygen and nitrogen atoms into the C-dots, increasing the total number of structural defects and altering their concentration ratio. It is this ratio difference in the two C-dots that causes their different luminescence behaviors. The proportion of several types of defects in the C-dots-200 are relatively balanced, leading to excitation wavelength-dependent fluorescence while the most abundant defects in C-dots-160 are in the form of C=O, which is the main reason for its excitation independent luminescence behavior. The number of structural defects in C-dots-160 is less than in C-dots-200 and the latter has the stronger fluorescence emission.

Abstract:A set of the highly fluorescent N, S co-doped carbon dots (NSCDs) were prepared through one-step hydrothermal synthesis at different temperature with citric acid as the carbon source and cysteamine as the N, S source. The NSCDs synthesized at 200 °C show significant quantum yield (81%) due to its optimal structure. The structure of the NSCDs changed with varying degrees of carbonization/aromatization and different content of multifunctional groups of C=O, −NH2, −OH, −SH, and N, S-aromatic heterocycte under different preparation temperatures, thus exhibiting tunable fluorescence. Especially, the obtained NSCDs exhibited a blue fluorescence in solution state and changed from strong blue to yellowish-green in its solid state under UV light as a result of the increase in preparation temperature. The as-prepared NSCDs can be used in selective detection of complex anions such as Cr2O72− and Fe(CN)63−, cell imaging, and preparation of fluorescent composite films.Graphical Abstractᅟ

New Observations on Concentration‐Regulated Carbon Dots

Abstract:Carbon dots can agglomerate easily and form larger clusters due to the van der Waals forces at high concentration. When the concentration is low, the clusters are dispersed and the particle size is decreased. New observations confirm that the change in particle size is the major cause of the carbon dot concentration‐dependent emissions. Carbon dots have many new and interesting phenomena and the concentration‐dependent luminescence wavelength is an intriguing one. Luminescent carbon dots have recently gained interest due to their new and interesting phenomena such as its concentration‐dependent peak emission. While there have been reports and discussions on this phenomenon, the mechanism continues to be poorly understood. Herein, new observations on nitrogen–sulfur codoping carbon dots (NSCDs) diluted at different concentrations show that the high concentration of G‐NSCDs (0.2 mg mL−1) emits green fluorescence while the low concentration of B‐NSCDs (0.01 mg mL−1) emits blue fluorescence. It is found that the carbon dot size changes with the particle concentration: the high concentration of G‐NSCDs is about 37 nm in size while the low concentration of B‐NSCDs is only about 1.8 nm in size. Therefore, it is clearly demonstrated that the emission wavelength is related to the particle size. These interesting behaviors open a door for the exploration of new materials with novel potential.
Investigation of the luminescence mechanism of multi-color nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots and their application in the detection of Fe 3+

Abstract:This study reports the successful preparation of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with a quantum yield of 15 % utilizing the hydrothermal method. Citric acid was employed as the carbon source, while 1,3-Diamino-2-propanol was utilized as the dopant. It was discovered that the emission of synthesized N-CQDs was dependent on concentration and excitation. By altering the N-CQDs concentration, the fluorescence emission peak was shifted from 453 to 574 nm, causing the emission to transition from blue to orange. The presence of multiple fluorescence emission centers within N-CQDs was confirmed through two-dimensional fluorescence matrix scanning. As the concentration of N-CQDs increased, the distance between these centers decreased, ultimately leading to aggregation. The energy or electrons were transferred as a result of the surface functional groups' interaction, which ultimately causes the fluorescence emission peak to shift to the red. Furthermore, an increase in concentration results in the formation of larger aggregates and larger sp 2 carbon domains, ultimately resulting in longer wavelengths. Because of the convenience of use, high sensitivity, and rapid response of the fluorescent probe detection approach, multi-color N-CQDs with tunable concentration were used for the identification of Fe 3+ , with a 10–200 μM linear detection range and limits of detection (LOD) of 0.56 μM.

Abstract:It is known that, by taking advantage of heteroatom doping, the electronic states and transition channels in carbon nano-dots (CNDs) can be effectively modulated. Thus, the photoluminescence (PL) properties of CNDs can be changed. For potential applications of CNDs as advanced materials for optoelectronic devices, it is important and significant to develop the practical techniques for doping heteroatoms into CNDs. In this work, we synthesize the multi-color fluorescent by using a fast and effective microwave method where the CNDs are nitrogen-doped. We examine the influence of different ratios of the raw materials on the structure and optical properties of N-CNDs. The results show that the prepared N-CNDs can generate blue (445 nm), green (546 nm), and orange (617 nm) fluorescence or PL with the mass ratio of the raw materials at 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3, respectively. We find that the N content in N-CNDs leads to different surface/edge states in $n-\pi^*$ domain. Thus, the wavelength of the PL emission from N-CNDs can be tuned via controlling the N concentration doped into the CNDs. Moreover, it is shown that the intensity of the PL from N-CNDs is mainly positively related to the content of C-O groups attached on the surface/edges of the N-CNDs. This study provides an effective experimental method and technical way to improve the fluorescent emission, and to modulate the color of the PL emission from CNDs.
One-Pot Gram-Scale Synthesis of Nitrogen and Sulfur Embedded Organic Dots with Distinctive Fluorescence Behaviors in Free and Aggregated States

Abstract:We report a new strategy for the gram-scale synthesis of highly blue fluorescent nitrogen and sulfur embedded organic dots through one-pot hydrothermal condensation of citric acid (CA) with cysteamine (Cys) at 200 degrees C. Under such circumstance, the dehydration between CA and Cys produces a molecular fluorophore, which self-assembles to amorphous dots through hydrophobic interaction and pi-pi stacking. In aqueous solution, the dots exhibit a very high fluorescent quantum yield that is above those of most photoluminescent carbon dots to date, since the fluorophore is not carbonized. The intense fluorescence emission is achieved by establishing an efficient push pull fluorophore system, as revealed by first-principles simulations. In the solid phase, the fluorescence of the dots is severely attenuated. More importantly, unlike excitation-independent emission displayed in solution, the fluorescence of the organic dots in the aggregated solid state is dependent on excitation wavelength, which is quite a rare and unique phenomenon. Finally, this new kind of organic dots has shown diverse applications in sensing and imaging.

Abstract:Nitrogen doped carbon fluorescent quantum dots (NDCFDs) with downconversion fluorescent and upconversion fluorescence properties were prepared by an ultrasonic one-step process. The raw materials and reagents were inexpensive and easy to obtain. The effect of ultrasonic time and reaction temperature on the fluorescent quantum yield and particle size was study. Optimal preparation conditions of NDCFDs with the highest fluorescence quantum yield were achieved by employing a reaction time of 14 h at 50 degrees C. NDFCDs were characterized by TEM, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, UV spectrophotometer, and fluorescence spectrometer. The results showed that the surface of NDCFDs were rich in hydroxyl, carbonyl hydrophilic group, etc. The DNCFDs not only had downconversion fluorescent, but also had good upconversion fluorescence. The effect of concentration and type of solution on the fluorescence properties of NDCFDs was studied. The formation mechanism, fluorescence emission mechanism and self-assembly behavior of NDCFDs were also investigated.
Nitrogen-induced Shift of Photoluminescence from Green to Blue Emission for Xylose-Derived Carbon Dots

Abstract:The discovery of carbon dots opens a new avenue to the applications of nanomaterials in biosensing and bioimaging. In this work, we develop simple methods to prepare carbon nanoparticles from xylose and to tune the photoluminescence (PL) characteristics of the xylose-derived carbon nanoparticles via the combination of three different processes: hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), annealing at 850 degrees C and laser ablation (LA) in a NH4OH solution. The HTC-synthesized carbon dots (CDs) exhibit green emission under the 365 nm UV excitation, the annealing of the HTC-synthesized CDs leads to complete loss of the PL characteristics, and the LA processing of the annealed carbon nanoparticles recovers the PL characteristics with blue shift in comparison to the HTC-synthesized CDs under the same UV excitation. the PL characteristics of the HTC-CDs and the LA-CDs are dependent on the pi-pi* transition of C-containing surface-functional groups and pi-pi* and n-pi* transitions of N-containing surface-functional groups, respectively, which are responsible for the difference in the PL characteristics between the HTC-synthesized CDs and the LA-processed CDs. The approaches demonstrated in this work provide a viable method to introduce and tune surface-functional groups on the surface of carbon nanoparticles.

Abstract:The differences between bare carbon dots (CDs) and nitrogen-doped CDs synthesized from citric acid as a precursor are investigated, aiming at understanding the mechanisms of emission and the role of the doping atoms in shaping the optical properties. Despite their appealing emissive features, the origin of the peculiar excitation-dependent luminescence in doped CDs is still debated and intensively being examined. This study focuses on the identification of intrinsic and extrinsic emissive centers by using a multi-technique experimental approach and computational chemistry simulations. As compared to bare CDs, nitrogen doping causes the decrease in the relative content of O-containing functional groups and the formation of both N-related molecular and surface centers that enhance the quantum yield of the material. The optical analysis suggests that the main emission in undoped nanoparticles comes from low-efficient blue centers bonded to the carbogenic core, eventually with surface-attached carbonyl groups, the contribution in the green range being possibly related to larger aromatic domains. On the other hand, the emission features of N-doped CDs are mainly due to the presence of N-related molecules, with the computed absorption transitions calling for imidic rings fused to the carbogenic core as the potential structures for the emission in the green range.
