Abstract:The ordered assembly of face-centered tetragonal (fct, L1(o)) FePt nanoparticles (NPs) has been fabricated through a layer-by-layer assembly method under an external magnetic field. Abstract:We have prepared L10-FePt films by sputtering FePt∕Au mutilayers on glass substrates followed by a vacuum annealing process. The magnetic measurement and x-ray diffraction indicate that the ordering temperature of the FePt films is reduced to 350°C and the coercivity (HC) is greatly enhanced by using the FePt∕Au multilayer structure. The interface energy and the stress energy due to the misfit between FePt and Au crystal lattices provide extra driving force to the ordering process of FePt films. Additionally, partial Au atoms are supposed to diffuse to the FePt grain boundaries during annealing, which consequently pins the magnetic domain wall and leads to the high HC.

Abstract:L10-FePt films are fabricated layer by layer using the magnetic sputtering technique at different growth temperatures. Structure, ordering process and magnetic properties of the films are studied. The film is partly ordered at the growth temperature of 300 °C, and reaches a completely ordered state at deposition temperature of 400 °C. With increasing the substrate temperature from 400 °C to 500 °C, the out-of-plane coercivity increases dramatically from 5.69 KOe to 16.3 KOe, and the magnetic anisotropy Ku increases from 2.0×107 erg/cm3 to 4.5×107 erg/cm3. The surface structure of the film varies with the growth temperature. We attribute the temperature dependence of magnetic properties to the decreased tetragonal distortion at high temperature.

Abstract:Self-assembled face-centered cubic FePt nanoparticles on Si substrates were embedded into amorphous Al2O3 capping layers with various thicknesses in the range 5-20 nm using atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology. The effect of the Al2O3 layer thickness on the structure, mono-dispersibility, and magnetic properties of the FePt/Al2O3-matrix composite films was investigated. After annealing at 700 degrees C in a reducing atmosphere for 1 h, well-dispersed face-centered tetragonal (fct) FePt particles could be obtained for the samples with 10 nm-thick and greater Al2O3 layers. Experimental results suggest that the protection of the amorphous 10 nm-thick Al2O3 matrix can effectively inhibit grain growth and particle aggregation, and preserve the ordered domains of FePt nanoparticles during the L1(0) ordering transition through annealing. The 5 nm fct FePt-nanoparticles/10 nm-thick Al2O3-matrix sample shows higher coercivity of 5.9 kOe. The combination of ALD-capping layer and self-assembled FePt nanoparticles provides a potential new approach to fabricate patterned magnetic recording media with ultrahigh areal density.

Abstract:Self-assembled face-centered cubic FePt nanoparticles were capped by a amorphous Al2O3 capping layer with the thickness of 10nm using the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology, and transmission electron microscopy indicates that the FePt nanocrystals are well-separated. After annealing the composite film at 700°C, well-monodispersed face-centered tetragonal FePt particles can be obtained, yielding a coercivity value Hc=5.9kOe with the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of 3.86MJ/m3. The thermal factor for the composite film is 68.5, meeting the industry requirement (KuV/kBT ≥ 50). The protection of amorphous Al2O3 matrix can effectively inhibit grain growth and particle aggregation, and preserve the ordered domains of FePt nanoparticles during the L10 ordering transition. The combination of ALD-capping layer and self-assembled FePt nanoparticles provides a new potential approach to fabricate patterned magnetic recording media with ultrahigh areal density.

Abstract:Controlling coercivity and understanding how it is affected by the microstructure are of essential importance for practical application of FePt thin films as a recording media. In this study, the small size of ordered domain, lower coercivity and weak intergranular exchange coupling interaction in TiNi-doped L10 FePt thin films are obtained. The TiNi additions maybe diffuse out of the FePt lattice into FePt grain boundaries, which separate FePt grains. The doping in grain boundary provides the nucleation center of reversed domain, which leads both nucleation-type and pinning-type mechanism to coexist in magnetization reversal processes for TiNi-doped FePt thin films. The decrease of anisotropy constant and nucleation field of reversed domain provides an explanation for the coercivity reduction of FePt thin films after TiNi doping.

Abstract:Ordered L10-FePt (001)-oriented films are deposited on (001) SrTiO3 by magnetic sputtering. The films are composed of a strained and a relaxed L10-FePt phase. The content of the relaxed phase, the magnetic anisotropy, as well as the perpendicular coercivity of the ordered L10-FePt films increase with increasing the growth temperature. The improvement of the magnetic properties is attributed to the relaxed phase content and the detailed structure variations. Our results show that high quality (001)-textured granular L10-FePt film may be well combined with the perovskite-like SrTiO3, which might open a roadmap in fabricating oxide-based devices.

Abstract:The dependence of the magnetic properties of epitaxial Fe50Pt50 films on order parameter (S) was investigated. It was demonstrated that the magnetic anisotropy could be tuned by controlling S which can be controlled by the growth temperature. Based on this result, two kinds of multilayered structures, each with a 13 nm fully ordered Fe50Pt50 layer as the bottom layer, were built: (1) 4-layered structure with S decreasing layer by layer from bottom to top; (2) graded structure with S changing more continuously along the thickness. The magnetic properties of the films were characterized using vibrating sample magnetometry. It was found that both structures have their easy axis perpendicular to the film; the anisotropy fields of the 4-layered film and the graded film are 53 kOe and 37 kOe, respectively. These values are much lower than that of the fully ordered uniform Fe50Pt50 film (about 73 kOe). The results suggest that it may be possible to reduce the writing field of Fe50Pt50 by gradually changing the order parameter.

Abstract:FePt L1(0)-structured clusters were synthesized by hydrogen reduction of Fe(NO3)(3).9H(2)O and H2PtCl6 (.) 6H(2)O mixtures within the pores of alumina. They were released by dissolving the alumina matrix and capped with organic surfactants. After a series of chemical treatments, clusters with an average diameter of about 11 nm were precipitated. The clusters were drop casted onto ordered nanoporous arrays. Clusters reaching the bottom of the pores formed an ordered magnetic array. The corresponding magnetic film exhibits distinct anisotropic behavior caused by the external magnetic field. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Well-isolated FePt( 001) nanoparticles embedded in an amorphous SiO2 matrix have been successfully fabricated via a molecular-beam epitaxy technique on MgO(001) single-crystal substrates via the introduction of a SiO2 intermediate layer into the FePt film structures, the critical thickness of which is 10 nm. The formation of two-dimensional magnetic assemblies of ordered FePt(001) nanoparticles with an average size of about 6 nm was directly obtained with this process at only 400. degrees C due to the interpenetration of SiO2 which has a lower surface energy. Studies of angular-dependent coercivity show a tendency of a domain-wall motion shift towards rotation of reverse-domain type upon insertion of the SiO2 into the FePt structures, and domain rotation is enhanced, leading to a decoupling of intergrain interaction, as identified with delta M measurement.
Monolayer-directed assembly and magnetic properties of FePt nanoparticles on patterned aluminum oxide

Abstract:FePt nanoparticles (NPs) were assembled on aluminum oxide substrates, and their ferromagnetic properties were studied before and after thermal annealing. For the first time, phosph(on)ates were used as an adsorbate to form self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on alumina to direct the assembly of NPs onto the surface. The Al(2)O(3) substrates were functionalized with aminobutylphosphonic acid (ABP) or phosphonoundecanoic acid (PNDA) SAMs or with poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) as a reference. FePt NPs assembled on all of these monolayers, but much less on unmodified Al(2)O(3), which shows that ligand exchange at the NPs is the most likely mechanism of attachment. Proper modification of the Al(2)O(3) surface and controlling the immersion time of the modified Al(2)O(3) substrates into the FePt NP solution resulted in FePt NPs assembly with controlled NP density. Alumina substrates were patterned by microcontact printing using aminobutylphosphonic acid as the ink, allowing local NP assembly. Thermal annealing under reducing conditions (96%N(2)/4%H(2)) led to a phase change of the FePt NPs from the disordered FCC phase to the ordered FCT phase. This resulted in ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature. Such a process can potentially be applied in the fabrication of spintronic devices.

Abstract:L 1 0 -FePt thin films with (111)-texture were deposited on Si(100) substrates at various atomic ratios and annealing temperatures to be used as a cover layer for magnetic force microscope (MFM) tips. Their microstructure and magnetic properties were systematically studied. The experimental results indicate that both atomic ratio and annealing temperature affect the disorder-order transformation of FePt films. In particular, when the atomic ratio approaches 1:1 (Fe: 51 at.%, Pt: 49 at.%) and the annealing temperature is 600 °C, the FePt film exhibits an ultra-high in-plane coercivity of 13.2 kOe. This is attributed to the formation of an L 1 0 -FePt phase with high order parameters. Based on the optimal preparation parameters, MFM tips were prepared by depositing FePt films on non-magnetic Si tips. Magnetic domain structures of magnetic tape and magnetic recording medium were successfully observed using these home-made FePt MFM tips. Therefore, the high coercivity L 1 0 -FePt films with (111)-texture prepared on Si substrates are expected to be potential materials for the fabrication of MFM tips.

Abstract:L10-ordered FePt thin films prepared by molecular-beam epitaxy on MgO (001) substrate at 320°C with different thickness of Pt buffer layer have been investigated. The out-of-plane coercivity increases with increasing thickness of Pt buffer. The maximum values of the long-range order parameter and uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy are 0.72 and 1.78×107erg/cm3, respectively, for films with 12nm thick Pt buffer layer, where the c/a ratio (0.976) shows the minimum value. The reason for the enhancement in ordering is due to the proper lattice strains Pt buffer bestows on FePt layer, these strains are equal to the contraction in lattice parameter c and the expansion in a. Studies of angular-dependent coercivity revealed that the magnetization reversal behaviour shifts from a domain-wall motion dominated case towards a near rotational mode with increasing thickness of Pt buffer layer.

Abstract:Perpendicular exchange coupled composite is prepared, with L10-FePt (5 nm) as the hard layer and [Co(0.2 nm)/Pt(t1 nm)]N multilayer as the soft layer. Both the hard and soft magnetic layers are of perpendicular magnetization. Significant reductions of the coercivity field are observed with the thickness increase of the soft Co/Pt multilayers, in both FePt/[Co(0.2)/Pt(0.6)]N and FePt/[Co(0.2)/Pt(0.3)]N series. Moreover, higher saturation magnetization of the soft layer is favorable for greater coercivity reduction.

Abstract:FePt nanoparticles (NPs) have been encapsulated in the insulating and protective oxide matrix, using a sol-gel process, in order to prevent particles from agglomerating and sintering during the heat-treatment process required for the L1(0) ordering. The microstructural and ferromagnetic properties of FePt/TiO2 nanocomposites were characterized. The presence of oxide-matrix leads to more homogeneous microstructures and better magnetic properties. The short range positional order of the FePt NPs can be preserved upon annealing at 700 degrees C to possess higher room-temperature coercivities (H-C = 3.7 kOe). Such nanocomposites with assemblies of high-coercivity magnetic nanoparticles are attractive for realizing new types of ultra-high-density data storage devices and magneto-composites. Abstract:We have studied the electronic structure of the L10 ordered FePt thin film by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES), cluster model, and first-principles calculations to investigate the relationship between the electronic structure and perpendicular magneto-crystalline anisotropy (MCA). The Fe 2p core-level HAXPES spectrum of the ordered film revealed the strong electron correlation in the Fe 3d states and the hybridization between the Fe 3d and Pt 5d states. By comparing the experimental valence band structure with the theoretical density of states, the strong electron correlation in the Fe 3d states modifies the valence band electronic structure of the L10 ordered FePt thin film through the Fe 3d-Pt 5d hybridization. These results strongly suggest that the strong electron correlation effect in the Fe 3d states and the Fe 3d-Pt 5d hybridization as well as the spin-orbit interaction in the Pt 5d states play important roles in the perpendicular MCA for L10-FePt.

Abstract:Tetragonal L10 FePt films are deposited on the pyramid-type Si substrates fabricated by chemical etching process from (100) Si wafers. The films are composed of different easy-axis orientation FePt grains, most of which with the easy axis along substrate normal, the others with the easy axis tilted from the normal direction. When the magnetic field is applied along the perpendicular direction, the easy-axis tilted grains reverse first, and then the magnetization reversal of the whole film is promoted. Small coercivity, suitable α, and high squareness are obtained. And the coercivity increases when the applied field is tilted from the normal direction.

Abstract:The effects of CoFe thickness, Pt thickness, and number of CoFe∕Pt bilayers on the anisotropy and coercivity of [CoFe∕Pt]×n multilayer films have been studied. These parameters are varied in an attempt to deposite [CoFe∕Pt]×n multilayer films with well-defined small perpendicular magnetic anisotropies. Best results were obtained in a [CoFe3Å∕Pt10Å]×5 film with coercivity Hc=42Oe, perpendicular anisotropy Hk=2200Oe, and easy-axis remanence Mr∕Ms=1. Large Pt thickness tends to cause well-defined interfaces thus larger surface anisotropy. Large CoFe thickness and more number of bilayers tend to cause bow-tie shaped easy-axis loops and multiple domain structures.
