Abstract:Doping modifications can endow BiOCl with dramatically improved photocatalytic performance via modifying the electronic structure. Here, the hierarchical Ni-doped BiOCl microflowers self-assembled by 2D nanosheets were synthesized through a one-step solvothermal method. Notably, the as-obtained Ni-doped BiOCl sample presented a remarkably enhanced photocatalytic degradation activity, totally decomposed Rhodamine B aqueous solution (15 mg/L) within 5 min under visible-light irradiation. Based on the experimental and calculated results, the introduction of Ni can narrow the band-gap and form defect energy levels simultaneously, resulted in a red shift in the absorption edge and much stronger absorption in the visible-light range. In addition, Ni-doped BiOCl exhibits an enhanced photocurrent density and a suppressed peak intensity of PL emission, indicating the efficient transportation and suppressed recombination of photoinduced charge carriers. This study sheds light on a possible application of Ni-doped BiOCl in photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants under visible-light irradiation and provides a feasible strategy to synthesis of high active Ni-doped BiOX (X = Cl, Br and I) photocatalysts.
Insights into the Enhanced Adsorption/photocatalysis Mechanism of a Bi4O5Br2/g-C3N4 Nanosheet

Abstract:The composite Bi4O5Br2/g-C3N4 nanosheet was fabricated by facile precipitation method for the first time. The results of XRD, XPS and FT-IR confirmed the successful construction of heterojunctions. Bi4O5Br2/g-C3N4 displayed better adsorptive and photocatalytic activity for removal of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) with good stability. Zeta potential and BET analysis suggested that the enhancement of Lewis base sites and large surface area were the reason for the improvement of adsorptive mechanism. On the side of photocatalysis, the better charge separation and visible light utilization in Bi4O5Br2/g-C3N4 were confirmed by transient photocurrent response, PL spectrum and UV–vis DRS. Moreover, active species trapping experiments and ESR tests indicated that h+ and ·O2− were the main radicals in the photocatalytic system. As the formation of type II heterojunction, band structures were optimized by valence band (VB) and conduct band (CB) offset, which was depth calculated. Due to this optimization and more activity sites generated in the photocatalyst surface, a slight improvement of the ·O2− generation was displayed by quantification test. This work might provide some guidance for synergy of adsorption and the photocatalytic degradation mechanism, and rational construction of type II heterojunctions to solve ever-increasing environmental problems.

Abstract:The nanosheet-assembled Bi2WO6 microspheres could be successfully synthesized in large quantities by a facile hydrothermal strategy in the presence of surfactant hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) under mild conditions. The morphology and size of as-prepared Bi2WO6 could be readily controlled by adjusting the synthetic parameters such as hydrothermal time. The probable formation mechanism of nanosheet-assembled Bi2WO6 microspheres was discussed in detail. The hierarchical nanosheet-assembled microspheres could be constructed by orderly arranged nanosheets. The photocatalytic activity of the nanosheet-assembled Bi2WO6 microspheres was evaluated by degrading rhodamine B (RhB) under irradiation of visible light. The brilliant photodegradation efficiency is about 98% under visible light irradiation for 50 min. The results suggest that the as-prepared Bi2WO6 microspheres have good prospects as the photocatalyst for the removal of organic pollutants.
Nanostructured δ-Bi2O3: Synthesis and their enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrated the enhanced photocatalytic activity of δ-Bi2O3 nanoparticles under visible light irradiation. Nanostructured δ-Bi2O3 with less than 50 nm has been successfully synthesized by a facile chemical precipitation at room temperature. Under visible light irradiation, the δ-Bi2O3 nanoparticles showed a superior activity towards variety pollutants, which was caused by the microstructure for nanoparticles and oxygen vacancies for defective fluorite structure. The degradation rates for Methylene Blue (MB), Rhodamine B (RhB) and Bisphenol A (BPA) were 99.69, 99.65 and 92.7% in the 120, 60 and 24 min visible light irradiation, respectively. The main activity materials were ·O2− and h+, which were proved by the trapping experiments. This work elevated the photocatalytic performance of δ-Bi2O3 without the need for additional compound, which provided a new idea to the design of highly efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:In situ N-doped (BiO)2CO3 hierarchical microspheres were fabricated by a one-pot hydrothermal method using dicyandiamide and bismuth citrate as raw materials. The as-prepared samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, FT-IR, UV-vis DRS and PL. The results indicated that the addition of dicyandiamide has significant impact on morphological structure, band gap and electronic-hole recombination rate of the as-prepared (BiO)2CO3. During the hydrothermal process, bismuth citrate were hydrolyzed by dicyandiamide, and N atoms were in situ doped into the (BiO)2CO3 lattice. N doping made the light response spectra of (BiO)2CO3 extend into visible light region significantly. The band gap narrowing of (BiO)2CO3 due to N doping was evidenced by valence band XPS. The in situ N-doped (BiO)2CO3 hierarchical microspheres structure showed excellent visible light photocatalytic activity toward aqueous Rh B and gas-phase NO degradation, which was higher than N-doped TiO2 and C-doped TiO2. The present investigation has significant implication on extending the effect of N doping into non-TiO2 system.

Abstract:Bi 2 WO 6 nano-sheets doped with various amounts of nickel (Ni) were prepared by hydrothermal method, and their microstructure and photocatalytic performance for degrading rhodamine B (RhB) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) under simulated solar light irradiation were investigated. The effective incorporation of Ni atoms in Bi 2 WO 6 was confirmed by energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Ni-doping decreased the crystallite size of Bi 2 WO 6 and improved its specific surface area and surface electrical property. Furthermore, Ni atoms acting as electron traps facilitated the separation of photo electron–hole pairs. Accordingly, both adsorptive and photocatalytic performances of the Ni–Bi 2 WO 6 were improved compared to undoping Bi 2 WO 6 . The 0.15-Ni–Bi 2 WO 6 (Ni/W, molar ratio) displayed the best adsorptive and photocatalytic activities among the Bi 2 WO 6 samples doped with various elements. The photogenerated holes were the predominant reactive species responsible for the photodegradation of RhB by 0.15-Ni–Bi 2 WO 6 . Solution pH could influence the adsorptive and photocatalytic performances of 0.15-Ni–Bi 2 WO 6 with the best performances under acidic condition.

Abstract:Bi2O2CO3/Bi2MoO6 heterojunction catalysts were prepared by treating Bi2MoO6 sheets with aqueous NaHCO3 solutions at room temperature. All the Bi2O2CO3/Bi2MoO6 heterojunctions exhibited higher activities than pristine Bi2MoO6 in the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange, and ciprofloxacin under visible-light irradiation, and the most active photocatalyst was found to be the one with a C/Bi molar ratio of ∼1/2.3. Relevant samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The higher activity of Bi2O2CO3/Bi2MoO6 than pristine Bi2MoO6 is explained by the enhanced separation and transfer of photogenerated electron/hole pairs, as verified by transient photocurrent densities, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Photogenerated holes (h+) and superoxide radical anions (•O2 -) were found to be the main active species. The good reusability of Bi2O2CO3/Bi2MoO6 was testified by cycling degradation of RhB and tetracycline hydrochloride.

Abstract:To fully utilize the solar energy, developing a suitable photocatalyst with broad-spectrum photoresponse is crucial in the degradation of water contaminants. In this work, Ni2+-doped Bi4O7 nanorods are prepared through a facile hydrothermal procedure. Various characterization techniques are adopted to explore the structure‐photocatalytic performance relationships of the obtained materials in degrading organic dye rhodamine B (RhB) and antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP). Compared with that of the pristine Bi4O7, the Ni2+-doping enlarges the specific surface area, lowers the band gap energy and reduces the electrons-holes recombination, thus improving photocatalytic performance. Catalyzed by the optimal 4 % Ni/Bi4O7 (20.0 mg), the elimination efficiencies of RhB and CIP (10.0 mg/L, 50.0 mL) are 97 % and 96 % within 2 h irradiated by visible light, respectively, which are obviously higher than that of Bi4O7. Also, the doped semiconductor exhibits satisfactory cycling stability. In addition, the possible photocatalytic degradation procedures of the pollutants and the plausible photocatalytic mechanism of the resulting composites are proposed. The excellent photocatalytic performance, low cost and facile preparation strategy endow the as-prepared 4 % Ni/Bi4O7 with broad-spectrum photoresponse a promising potential in environmental remediation.

Abstract:Novel porous quasi single-crystal B-doping BiO 2-x (B-BiO 2-x ) nanosheets were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method with boric acid (HBO 3 ) as B source. Benefiting from unique microstructure and B doping, as-prepared B-BiO 2-x delivered remarkable photocatalytic activity, whose apparent rate constant for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) was 5 times higher than that of BiO 2-x . Besides, B-BiO 2-x also showed decent photochemical stability. This work presents a new insight into design and synthesis of porous quasi single-crystal photocatalysts.

Abstract:A novel ternary hybrid photocatalyst Bi/Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 is fabricated by a facial one-pot hydrothermal method, through the in situ growth of Bi and Bi2O2CO3 on the surface of 2D Bi2WO6 nanosheets. The Bi/Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 hybrid exhibits the significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity, evaluated by the photooxidation of methylene blue (MB) and chlorobenzene. The improved photocatalytic activity is attributed to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of metallic Bi and the formation of the heterojunction among the three components in Bi/Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 hybrid. The SPR effect of Bi nanoparticles leads to the great light response ability to the entire UV-vis light. And the SPR effect of metallic Bi, combined with Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 heterojunction, also facilitates the rapid separation and transferring of the photogenerated charge carries, as well as the efficient suppression of the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes.

Abstract:Novel Nb-doped Bi2WO6 nanosheets have been successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. XRD, Raman spectra, XPS and SEM were adopted to analyze the structure and morphology of the samples, then the structure-dependent optical properties, photoelectric behavior and photocatalytic activities were investigated, and the structure-property relationship was also discussed. The results show that doping Nb5+ can increase the oxygen vacancies in the Bi2WO6 lattice and reduce the optical band gap of Bi2WO6. The oxygen vacancies also act as electron traps, which promote the separation of photogenerated carriers. Hence, compared with the pure Bi2WO6, the as-prepared Nb-doped Bi2WO6 nanosheets exhibit enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity for removing contaminants in water such as rhodamine B and tetracycline.

Abstract:Novel N-doped (BiO)(2)CO3 hierarchical microspheres (N-BOC) were fabricated by a facile one-pot template free method on the basis of hydrothermal treatment of bismuth citrate and urea in water for the first time. The N-BOC sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy. The N-BOC was constructed by the self-assembly of single-crystalline nanosheets. The aggregation of nanosheets led to the formation of hierarchical framework with mesopores, which is favorable for efficient transport of reaction molecules and harvesting of photoenergy. Due to the in situ doped nitrogen substituting for oxygen in the lattice of (BiO)(2)CO3, the band gap of N-BOC was reduced from 3.4 to 2.5 eV, making N-BOC visible light active. The N-BOC exhibited not only excellent visible light photocatalytic activity, but also high photochemical stability and durability during repeated and long-term photocatalytic removal of NO in air due to the special hierarchical structure. This work demonstrates that the facile fabrication method for N-BOC combined with the associated outstanding visible light photocatalytic performance could provide new insights into the morphology-controlled fabrication of nanostructured photocatalytic materials for environmental pollution control.
Simple preparation of a sunshine -like bismuth oxyiodide nanosheets for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutant under sunlight

Abstract:The spread of organic pollutants in water is encountering colossal problems worldwide, and it gets worst as the industry progresses. Among the suggested solutions, heterogenous photocatalysis was progressively applied to degrade organic pollutants. Herein, a simple ethylene glycol refluxing (EGR) method was optimized to fabricate bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) nanoparticles with a percentage yield of 94.2%. The EGR method's success in preparing BiOI nanomaterial was confirmed by the results of X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform-infrared spectroscopy. The scanning-electron-microscopy and the transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed that the sunshine-like nanosheets are composed of tiny nanoparticles. The BiOI was employed for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants under visible light. The adsorption capability of BiOI was investigated prior to its photocatalytic activity, and both investigations showed appealing results. The outcomes of this study nominated both the EGR method for fast preparation of a nanoscale BiOI and the applicability of BiOI as a photocatalyst to swap the organic pollutants from contaminated water using the free-inexhaustible sunlight.

Abstract:Constructing heterostructured photocatalysts for organic contaminants elimination is promising in the area of environmental purification. For boosting the photocatalytic performance, modulating the heterojunction interface can enhance solar light utilization and facilitate the transporation of photoinduced charge carriers. In this research, octahedral NH2-UiO-66 nanoparticles with large surface area and wide light absorption range were prepared and further employed to in-situ construction of NH2-UiO-66/Bi2MoO6 nanocomposite. The optimized NH2-UiO-66/Bi2MoO6 nanocomposite displays enhanced photocatalytic activities in the elimination of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC). The corresponding degradation rate constant is about 4 and 1.76 times larger than that of individual Bi2MoO6. Combined with the photochemical and electrochemical results, it can be speculated that the higher photocatalytic performance is assigned to the accelerative photoinduced carrier transfer by the formation of well-contacted heterostructured interface. This study provides a theoretical basis for further developing organic–inorganic hybrid catalyst with significant improvement of photocatalytic properties in wastewater treatment.

Facile Fabrication of BiOI Decorated NaNbO3 Cubes: A P–n Junction Photocatalyst with Improved Visible-Light Activity

Abstract:To enhance the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers, a p-n junction photocatalyst BiOI/NaNbO3 has been fabricated by a facile method. The obtained samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, PL, N-2 sorption-desorption and DRS. DRS results showed that the light absorption edges of BiOI/NaNbO3 hybrids were red-shifted with the increase of BiOI content. The SEM and TEM images revealed that the BiOI was widely decorated over the surfaces of NaNbO3 cubes. The formation of p-n heterojunction at their interfaces was proved by the HRTEM image. The visible light-driven photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution. Compared with single NaNbO3 and BiOI, the BiOI/NaNbO3 hybrid photocatalysts have exhibited significantly enhanced activities. Meanwhile, the mass ratio of BiOI/NaNbO3 displayed important influence on the MB degradation. The hybrid photocatalyst with BiOI content of 40% performed the optimal activity. This activity enhancement should be attributed to the strong visible light absorption, the high migration and separation efficiency of photo-induced carriers. The photocurrent and PL measurements confirmed that the interfacial charge separation efficiency was greatly improved by coupling BiOI with NaNbO3. Controlled experiments proved that the degradation of pollutants was mainly attributed to the oxidizing ability of the generated holes (h(+)), center dot O-2(-), and center dot OH radicals. Abstract:Different bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) nanosheets were successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal process in different solvents. The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS) and nitrogen adsorption. The prepared sheet-like BiOCl products showed different optical properties, BET surface areas and photocatalytic activities on the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation (lambda > 400 nm). More importantly, the as-synthesized BiOCl nanosheets exhibited superior photocatalytic activities compared with commercial BiOCl and TiO2 under visible light irradiation. The visible-light-induced degradation of RhB over the as-synthesized BiOCl photocatalysts was mainly ascribed to the photosensitization process and their layered structures.
Enhancement of Photocatalytic Activity over NaBiO3/BiOCl Composite Prepared by an in Situ Formation Strategy

Abstract:NaBiO3/BiOCl composite photocatalysts with heterostructure have been prepared by a novel in situ formation approach, by using NaBiO3 and hydrochloric acid aqueous solutions as the raw materials. Under visible light (λ > 400 nm) irradiation, the photocatalytic activity of Rhodamine B over NaBiO3/BiOCl photocatalysts has been evaluated. The results demonstrate that the combination of NaBiO3 and BiOCl has a higher photocatalytic activity compared with single NaBiO3 or BiOCl photocatalyst, due to more effective photo-excited electron-hole separation by the heterojunction semiconductor structure and also higher absorption capacity of NaBiO3.
BiOCl/ultrathin Polyaniline Core/shell Nanosheets with a Sensitization Mechanism for Efficient Visible-Light-driven Photocatalysis

Abstract:Photocatalytic technology holds great promise in renewable energy and environmental protection. Herein, we report the synthesis of a class of polyaniline-sensitized BiOCl core/shell nanosheets with visible-light photocatalytic activity by a one-step oxidative polymerization method and show how the hybrid nanosheet boosts the photocatalytic activity and stability for degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). In this unique structure, the ultrathin polyaniline (PANI) as a shell with the thickness of about 1–2 nm, can widen the response of the catalyst to visible light to boost photocatalysis and the BiOCl core can promote the separation of photogenerated carriers from the PANI. We demonstrate that the optimized BiOCl/PANI core/shell photocatalyst shows nearly three times higher photocatalytic activity for the degradation of RhB than pure BiOCl and also shows high stability. This work provides a new strategy for the design of a highly efficient hybrid photocatalyst driven by visible light.
