Abstract:Uniform CeO2 nanoparticles and nanorods were selectively synthesized through a hydrothermal method, which was followed by calcination. UV-vis diffuse reflection spectra (DRS) exhibited that the obtained powders were responsive to visible light, which might be attributed to the presence of increased oxygen vacancies in the ceria structure. The enhanced photocatalytic activities of the CeO2 nanostructures were comparatively evaluated by the photodegradation of rhodamine B under visible light, which far exceeded those of commercial P25 powders. The mechanism was investigated through carrier trapping experiments. Moreover, a glass carbon electrode (GCE) decorated with the resulting nanocrystals was used to examine their electrocatalytic behavior for p-nitrophenol degradation in a basic solution. The results demonstrated substantially that the obtained CeO2 nanoparticles possess excellent photocatalytic and electrocatalytic activities.

Abstract:Industrial processes, including metal plating and paint production, generate substantial wastewater with hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), necessitating the development of efficient photocatalysts for its reduction. In this study, we fabricated curly hybrid nanofiber composites (TiO 2 /Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)) with varying MWCNT contents (0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 w/w) via electrospinning and subsequent calcination process for Cr(VI) photoreduction efficiency. Our experimental results indicated an initial rise in specific surface areas and micropore volumes with increasing the MWCNT content up to TiO 2 /MWCNT-7, followed by a decrease, attributed to the development of a curly structure with the introduction of MWCNTs. This improved TiO 2 dispersion, reduced the band gap, and densified the composites, enhancing mass transfer properties and visible light utilization. As a result, TiO 2 /MWCNT-7 exhibited a significant redshift in wavelength along with a 2.93 eV band gap, resulting in 97.5% Cr(VI) photoreduction efficiency within 120 min and sustained 92% efficiency over 6 cycles. This study offers insights for catalyst design and optimization in Cr(VI) photoreduction for water treatment applications.

Abstract:Proper design and successful synthesis of photocatalysts with efficient interfacial charge transfer, strong redox capabilities, and strong environmental applications are critical. Herein, a novel Z-scheme heterojunction AgI/Ce2MI nanocomposite with redox-retaining properties was successfully prepared by a simple precipitation method. Compared with AgI and Ce-2MI, the efficiency of the optimized Z-scheme AgI/Ce-2MI composites in photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) in water within 75 min could exceed 90%. The reduction rate of AgI/Ce-2MI to Cr (VI) was 0.0277 min-1, which was 2.6 times and 6.8 times that of AgI and Ce-2MI, respectively. In addition, the cycle performance of AgI/Ce-2MI under different pH conditions was compared, and it was found that under the condition of pH= 2, its five-time catalytic activity stability showed good performance. Moreover, the enhancement process of reactive oxygen species & BULL;Oz and & BULL;OH were further verified by active radical capture experiment and ESR. Therefore, this study can provide a Z-scheme heterojunction nanocomposite photocatalytic process with environmental purification functions.
A novel synthesis of porous TiO2 nanotubes and sequential application to dye contaminant removal and Cr(VI) visible light catalytic reduction

Abstract:Porous TiO2 nanotubes (PTNTs) were successfully prepared by a versatile sepiolite-sacrificed template method. The PTNTs possess a unique porous structure and a high specific surface area (120 m2 g−1). It exhibits significantly enhanced adsorption performance for azo dye Congo Red (CR, model dye pollutant) with maximum adsorption capacity of 540 mg g−1, which is much better than common TiO2-based materials, as well as some other semiconductor adsorbents. The dye-impregnated PTNTs (CR-PTNTs) were re-utilized as a photocatalyst for the visible light-induced reduction of Cr(VI). The results show that the CR-PTNTs exhibit significantly superior photocatalytic reduction ability to Cr(VI), and such performance can be attributed to the huge adsorption of CR molecules on the PTNTs and the unique porous structure of PTNTs. Current work not only reports an effective adsorbent for dye CR removal, but also put forward a reutilization strategy of the spent adsorbent for efficient visible-light photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI), applicable to the other non-coexisting dyes and Cr(VI) pollutant scenarios.

Abstract:One dimensional (1D) single crystalline nanostructures facilitate electron transport and reduce the charge recombination; whilst nanotubular structure and a roughened surface provide more active sites as well as more opportunities for target molecules to reach the photocatalyst. As a result, TiO2 thin films with such a structural design can be anticipated to possess excellent photocatalytic activity. In this study, top opened nanowires with nanoprotrusions on the surface, which are hierarchical yet single crystalline as a whole, were synthesized by a simple acid treatment at 80°C for 36h of hydrothermally synthesized titanate nanowires, followed by a final calcination at 450°C for 1h. The hierarchical TiO2 films exhibited significantly enhanced efficiency when utilized to assist the photodegradation of rhodamine B and phenol in water under UV light illumination.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based materials are regarded as one of the most potential photocatalysts for utilizing solar energy. In this work, we reported a facile one step in-situ hydrothermal-roasting method for preparing honeycomb-like g-C3N4/CeO2 nanosheets with abundant oxygen vacancies (g-C3N4/CeO2-x). The hydrothermal-roasting and incomplete-sealed state can (i) generate an in-situ reducing atmosphere (CO, N2, NH3) to tune the concentration of oxygen vacancies in CeO2; (ii) beneficial to prevent continuous growth of g-C3N4 and results in honeycomb-like g-C3N4/CeO2-x hybrid nanosheets. What is more, the g-C3N4/CeO2-x photocatalyst exhibited extended photoresponse range, increased specific surface area and obviously enhanced separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. As a proof-of-concept application, the optimized g-C3N4/CeO2-x nanosheets could achieve 98% removal efficiency for Cr(VI) under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) within 2.5 h, which is significantly better than those of pure g-C3N4 and CeO2. This work provides a new idea for more rationally designing and constructing g-C3N4-based catalysts for efficient extended photochemical application.

Abstract:Cr (VI) is widely used in industry but its high toxicity causes environmental pollution that needs addressing. The growth of photosensitive materials on semiconductor surfaces can successfully stop photogenerated electron-hole pair recombination, increasing photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, α-Fe2O3 nanorods/UiO-66-NH2 compounds were successfully obtained through the in-situ solvothermal approach. By using 2-aminoterephthalic acid in the solvothermal treatment of Zr4+ adsorbed α-Fe2O3 nanorods, the UiO-66-NH2 nanocrystals were evenly distributed on the nanorods. In addition, the reduction efficiency of wastewater reached 93% after 150 min of light exposure, much higher than uncompounded materials. Moreover, the α-Fe2O3/UiO-66-NH2 crystals had good regeneration ability, retaining 73% of Cr (VI) removal capacity after four cycles. In this process, α-Fe2O3 and UiO-66-NH2 effectively complexed to form a heterojunction, which effectively suppressed the complexation of electrons (e-) and holes (h+). This efficient complex facilitates the photocatalytic degradation of highly noxious Cr (VI) to Cr (III) under visible light. The efficient Cr (VI) elimination ability comes from the photocatalytic reduction mechanism where they form a special interface to promote the movement of electrons and holes for efficient removal. This work provides both a new approach for in-situ synthesis and a reference for efficient Cr (VI) elimination.

Abstract:Based on one-dimensional (1D) H-titanate nanotubes (H-TNTs: TNTs with loosely distributed H+ across the interlayers), a novel series of Cd0.5Zn0.5S loaded H-TNTs (Cd0.5Zn0.5S/TNTs) composites with varied ratios have been achieved by the in-situ growth method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by (high-resolution) transmission electron microscopy (HR/TEM), XRD, FT-IR, XPS, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS), fluorescence spectroscopy (FL), photocurrent, electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, etc. These studies concurrently revealed a successful formation of Cd0.5Zn0.5S/TNTs heterojunction, and a homogeneous distribution of Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanoparticles over the surface of 1D H-TNTs. The incorporation of the appropriate amount of Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanoparticles (10%) significantly improves the efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs separation. The photocatalytic reduction efficiency of the Cd0.5Zn0.5S/TNTs for Cr(VI) and degradation efficiency for organic molecules increased initially and then decreased with the amount of loaded Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanoparticles. The optimal photocatalytic efficiency was observed at 10 %Cd0.5Zn0.5S/TNTs, which were 2.71-fold and 4.8-fold than that of pure H-TNTs for the removal of the Cr(VI) and the degradation of the organic molecules, respectively. The ESR test signified that the holes (h+) and superoxide radicals (∙O2–) played an essential role in the degradation process of organic molecules. Finally, a reasonable explanation for enhanced photocatalysis performance was proposed.

Nb2O5 nanowires in-situ grown on carbon fiber: A high-efficiency material for the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI)

Abstract:Niobium oxide nanowire-deposited carbon fiber (CF) samples were prepared using a hydrothermal method with amorphous Nb2O5·nH2O as precursor. The physical properties of the samples were characterized by means of numerous techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED), UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), N2 adsorption-desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The efficiency for the removal of Cr(VI) was determined. Parameters such as pH value and initial Cr(VI) concentration could influence the Cr(VI) removal efficiency or adsorption capacity of the Nb2O5/carbon fiber sample obtained after hydrothermal treatment at 160°C for 14hr. The maximal Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of the Nb2O5 nanowire/CF sample was 115mg/g. This Nb2O5/CF sample also showed excellent photocatalytic activity and stability for the reduction of Cr(VI) under UV-light irradiation: the Cr(VI) removal efficiency reached 99.9% after UV-light irradiation for 1hr and there was no significant decrease in photocatalytic performance after the use of the sample for 10 repeated cycles. Such excellent Cr(VI) adsorption capacity and photocatalytic performance was related to its high surface area, abundant surface hydroxyl groups, and good UV-light absorption ability.
Synergistic photoelectrochemical reduction of Cr(VI) and oxidation of organic pollutants by g-C3N4/TiO2-NTs electrodes.

Abstract:The g-C3N4/TiO2-NTs electrodes were synthesized by a dip-coating procedure followed by high-temperature annealing used in photoelectrochemical process. From the results, a simultaneous and rapid reduction of Cr(VI) and degradation of phenol in Cr(VI)/phenol system was observed with photoelectrocatalytic activity under UV–visible light irradiation than photocatalytic and electrocatalytic activities. The different kinds of Cr(VI)/organic pollutants systems were also investigated systematically. In addition, different scavengers were also added in Cr(VI)/phenol and Cr(VI)/benzyl alcohol systems to indicate that the hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals were the most major active species for the denomination of Cr(VI) and organic pollutants. The intermediates of phenol and benzyl alcohol were also detected during the reaction in order to deduce the photoelectrocatalysis mechanism underg-C3N4/TiO2-NTs electrodes that the charge separation was improved and subsequently electron-transfer efficiency was higher.
Hydrothermal synthesis of Nb5+-doped SrTiO3 mesoporous nanospheres with greater photocatalytic efficiency for Cr(VI) reduction

Abstract:The Nb5+-doping strategy was adopted to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of SrTiO3 to overcome the limitation for its practical photocatalytic applications. Different amounts of Nb5+ doped SrTiO3 (Nb-SrTiO3) mesoporous nanospheres were synthesized via a convenient hydrothermal approach. The photocatalytic reduction of aqueous Cr(VI) using the Nb-SrTiO3 products under xenon lamp irradiation was investigated. Results indicated that 3% Nb-SrTiO3 was the optimum product, which exhibited a photocatalytic efficiency 3 times as much as that of SrTiO3 and a fair reuse stability. Moreover, 3% Nb-SrTiO3 also demonstrated higher photocatalytic efficiency than many other metal cations doped SrTiO3 synthesized via the same process and a number of previously reported photocatalysts. The best photocatalytic activity of 3% Nb-SrTiO3 was found to be predominantly due to its most efficient separation and transfer of photogenerated holes and electrons. This study suggests that Nb-SrTiO3 is a potential efficient photocatalyst for the remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated water.

Abstract:For the heavy metal ion Cr(VI), which is widely present in wastewater with acute toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity, we successfully constructed a ternary material of PCNFs/CuMOF/TiO 2 for rapid detection and photoreduction of Cr(VI). The material has obvious advantages: on the one hand, ZIF-8/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers and their derived porous carbon nanofibers (PCNFs) were synthesized by electrospinning and high temperature carbonization, which provided a loading platform for CuMOF and TiO 2 , effectively inhibited the agglomeration of CuMOF and TiO 2 , and ensured the exposure of active sites. Meanwhile, its excellent conductivity can promote the effective migration of photogenerated carriers in the photocatalytic process. On the other hand, CuMOF constructed with tetra-carboxyphenylporphyrin (TCPP) as the linking arm and Cu(NO 3 ) 2 ·3 H 2 O as the metal node was directly loaded on the surface of porous carbon nanofibers (PCNFs), and then TiO 2 nanoparticles were introduced by hydrothermal method. CuMOF ensures the responsiveness of the composite to visible light. Moreover, the energy level structure of TiO 2 matches with CuMOF, which effectively inhibits the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs (e - -h + ). The results show that the colorimetric detection of Cr(VI) was achieved by using 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as the sensing probe. The method was highly selective for Cr(VI) ions with a limit of detection (LOD) of 24.1 nM. Encouragingly, PCNFs/CuMOF/TiO 2 was further used as a photocatalyst. The reduction rate of Cr(VI) under visible light irradiation is 96.1 % in 60 min. The active species trapping experiments confirm the key role of e - photocatalytic reduction, upon which a possible photocatalytic mechanism is proposed. The degradation rate of Cr(VI) is still 86.4 % after the five times cycle, and the good stability and reproducibility allow it to be used as a potential green photocatalyst for the conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr(III).

Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Modified NiCo2S4 for the Efficient Photocatalytic Reduction of Hexavalent Chromium

Abstract:Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) compounds are considered to be occupational carcinogens, which can be transferred from the environment to the human body and pose a significant threat to human health. It is particularly urgent to explore a more efficient catalyst for removing Cr(VI) to comply with discharge standards. The addition of CNTs enables the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. Thus, we synthesized a range of NiCo2S4 hybrid materials with different multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs) contents using a two-step hydrothermal method. The composites had significant advantages compared to pure NiCo2S4, such as an enhanced visible light absorption, increased specific surface area, high electron–hole pair separation, and fast electron transport. Thus, MWCNT addition enabled efficient photocatalytic performances in terms of reducing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). Among all the composite samples, the MWCNT/NiCo2S4 with 0.050 g of MWCNTs achieved the highest efficiency in reducing Cr(VI) under light irradiation, which showed a removal rate close to 100% within 40 min. Such CNT-based composite photocatalysts could be used to reduce the highly toxic Cr(VI) in environmental applications.

Efficient Photoelectrocatalytic Reduction of Cr(VI) Using TiO2 Nanotube Arrays As the Photoanode and a Large-Area Titanium Mesh As the Photocathode

Abstract:We report the efficient photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) reduction of Cr(VI) using TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs) as the photoanode and a large-area Ti mesh as the photocathode. Short-length TNTs (S-TNTs) show much greater PEC activity than either long-length TNTs (L-TNTs) or sol–gel-prepared TiO2 film, due to the fact that the TNT structure is advantageous of trapping light energy over the thin-film structure and the S-TNTs enable the more efficient electron transfer into the substrate than L-TNTs. More importantly, increasing the surface area of the photocathode (Ti mesh) can greatly accelerate the PEC reduction of Cr(VI), presumably due to the increased number of the active reduction sites on the larger-surface Ti mesh. In the PEC reduction of Cr(VI), Cr(V) is identified as a reaction intermediate using the electroparamagnetic resonance technique, whereby the process for the Cr(VI) evolution is proposed. The S-TNTs have been confirmed to be stable over many repetitive cycles of use, indicating their suitability for wide-scale use.
Visible-light Responsive Cr(VI) Reduction by Carbonyl Modification Nb3O7(OH) Nanoaggregates

Abstract:Nanostructured photocatalysts have become a subject of much interest, with most research focusing on the visible-light sensitization in order to effectively utilize incoming solar energy for environmental remediation. Herein, we design an acetic acid-assisted solvothermal strategy, enabling Nb 3 O 7 (OH) nanoaggregates with C=C and C=O functional groups on the surface and extending the absorption edge located at 550 nm approximately. The success extension of harvesting light from intrinsic UV region below 380 nm to visible region relies on effective surface modification by carbonyl groups originated from citric acid in acetic acid solution. Specifically, the unique C=O-rich surface state and advantageous structural features render them particularly attractive for Cr(VI) photoreduction applications with the assistance of hole scavenger tartaric acid. No phase or morphology transition occurs during Cr(VI) reduction. The reaction rate slows down and the photoresponse area turns back into intrinsic UV region of Nb 3 O 7 (OH) with the prolonging reaction time, originating from the exhaustion of surface C=O functional groups. This work is expected to help to elucidate the rational design and efficient synthesis of visible-light absorption catalyst materials for actual applications in the near future.
Enhanced Photoreduction of Cr(VI) and Photooxidation of NO over TiO2-x Mesoporous Single Crystals

Abstract:Managing air and water pollution is among the greatest challenges and a major issue for human civilizations in the 21st century. Semiconductors such as TiO2 are regarded as one of the most promising catalysts that can be used to realize the simultaneous and efficient treatment of multi-component wastewater and NO selective oxidation. However, the granular TiO2 always contains too many phase interfaces, which are harmful to the transfer of photo-excited electrons. Reduced TiO2 mesoporous single crystals (TiO2-x MSCs) with capacity of photoreduction and photooxidation were successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal treatment. The formation of Ti3+ impurity levels contribute to a narrowed band gap and enhanced visible light adsorption of TiO2-x. In addition, the mesoporous single crystal structure would provide a long-range order channel for the transfer of photo-generated electrons, which leads to the efficient photoreduction and photooxidation capacity of TiO2-x MSCs. The results revealed that Ti3+-MSCs exhibit outstanding photocatalytic decontamination performance in simultaneous photo-degradation of phenol and removal of Cr(VI) owing to high photo-generated charge separation rate and the synergistic effect of phenol and Cr(VI). In addition, in the absence of any noble metal, the as repared reduced Ti3+-MSCs still show high selectivity of NO2 in the NOx photo-oxidation process, owing to the extended wide-spectrum absorption of Ti3+-MSCs and the high-active holes on Ti3+-MSCs under solar light irradiation.
