Abstract:The spin-wave excitations of the multiferroic $\rm MnWO_4$ have been measured in its low-temperature collinear commensurate phase using high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. These excitations can be well described by a Heisenberg model with competing long-range exchange interactions and a single-ion anisotropy term. The magnetic interactions are strongly frustrated within the zigzag spin chain along c axis and between chains along the a axis, while the coupling between spin along the b axis is much weaker. The balance of these interactions results in the noncollinear incommensurate spin structure associated with the magnetoelectric effect, and the perturbation of the magnetic interactions leads to the observed rich phase diagrams of the chemically-doped materials. This delicate balance can also be tuned by the application of external electric or magnetic fields to achieve magnetoelectric control of this type of materials.

Abstract:Most earlier work on the effect of chemical substitution in multiferroic MnWO4 has focused on the 3d transition metal substitution of Mn. In this paper, we investigate the Ru substitution of Mn in polycrystalline Mn1−xRux/2WO4 in order to unveil the consequence of 4d transition metal substitution in terms of magnetic transitions and ferroelectricity. It is found that the Ru substitution substantially reshuffles the magnetic frustration and stabilizes the incommensurate helical spin-order phase (AF2) by partially suppressing the collinear spin-order phase (AF1 phase). The coexistence of the AF2 and AF1 phases at low temperature is suggested. Consequently, the ferroelectric polarization is remarkably enhanced, accompanied with significant response of the polarization to magnetic field. It is argued that the structural distortion and enhanced spin-orbital coupling associated with the Ru substitution may be responsible for this ferroelectricity enhancement.

Abstract:MnWO4 has attracted attention because of its ferroelectric property induced by frustrated helical spin order. Strong spin-lattice interaction is necessary to explain ferroelectricity associated with this type of magnetic order. We have conducted thermal expansion measurements along the a, b, c axes revealing the existence of strong anisotropic lattice anomalies at T-1 = 7.8 K, the temperature of the magnetic lock-in transition into a commensurate low-temperature (reentrant paraelectric) phase. The effect of hydrostatic pressure up to 1.8GPa on the FE phase is investigated by measuring the dielectric constant and the FE polarization. The low-temperature commensurate and paraelectric phase is stabilized and the stability range of the ferroelectric phase is diminished under pressure. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Unconventional superconductors are often characterized by numerous competing and even intertwined orders in their phase diagrams. The fluctuations associated with these orders may provide the exotic pairing glue that underlies their high-temperature superconductivity. Helimagnet MnP, the first Mn-based superconductor under pressure, lacks high rotational symmetry. However, our resonant soft x-ray scattering experiment discovers novel helical orbital density wave (ODW) orders in MnP and reveals intertwined ordering phenomena. In particular, an ODW forms with half the period of the spin order and fully develops slightly above the spin ordering temperature, which resembles the behaviors of the nematic phase of the iron-based superconductors. Moreover, we find that their domains develop simultaneously, yet the spin order domains are larger than those of the ODW; and they cooperatively produce another ODW with 1/3 the period of the spin order. These observations provide a comprehensive picture of the intertwined orders in this three-dimensional, low-symmetry system and shed light on the understanding of its superconducting mechanism.

Abstract:The effects of substituting nonmagnetic Mg2+ and Zn2+ ions for the Mn2+ (S = 5/2) ions on the structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of the multiferroic frustrated antiferromagnet MnWO4 were investigated. Polycrystalline samples of Mn1-xMgxWO4 and Mn1-xZnxWO4 (0<x<0.3) solid solutions were prepared by a solid-state route and characterized via X-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetization, and dielectric permittivity measurements. Mg and Zn substitutions give rise to very similar effects. The Neel temperature TN, the AF3-to-AF2 magnetic phase transition temperature T2, and the critical ferroelectric temperature Tc = T2 of MnWO4 are reduced upon the nonmagnetic doping. At the lowest temperature (T = 1.5 K), the incommensurate magnetic structure for x(Mg) = 0.15 and x(Zn) = 0.15 corresponds to either a sinusoidal spin arrangement or an elliptical spin-spiral phase similar to the polar AF2 structure observed in MnWO4. These findings were discussed by considering the effects of the Mg and Zn substitutions on the crystal lattice and on the spin exchange network of MnWO4.

Abstract:A long-standing issue in multiferroic MnWO4 is the electric polarization reversal when magnetic field is applied along the magnetic easy axis (H parallel to u). In this work, we performed comprehensive ferroelectric polarization measurements on MnWO4 in fields up to 52 T and with rotating field direction in the ac plane. When the field is rotated from H parallel to c to H parallel to u, the induced high-field phase (-P parallel to b) favors a sign reversal relative to the low-field +P parallel to b phase, which is attributed to the vector spin chirality changing from one side of the spin connecting vector to the other. Particularly, further slight deviation of the field from the magnetic easy axis towards H parallel to a causes an abrupt reversal of the high-field phase from -P parallel to b to +P parallel to b. We assume that this unusual angular dependence of polarization behavior can be understood by magnetic control of the helicity of the chiral plane with opposite conical spin structures. In addition, we also propose electric-field control of the chiral plane close to the ferroelectric phase transition at high fields. This study results in an overall understanding of this important multiferroic material and sheds light on field-induced polarization switching in related compounds.

Abstract:The ordered magnetic states of MnWO4 at low temperatures were examined by evaluating the spin exchange interactions between the Mn2+ ions of MnWO4 on the basis of first principles density functional calculations and by performing classical spin analysis with the resulting spin exchange parameters. Our work shows that the spin exchange interactions are frustrated within each zigzag chain of Mn2+ ions along the c direction and between such chains of Mn2+ ions along the a direction. This explains the occurrence of a spiral-spin order along the c and a directions in the incommensurate magnetic state AF2, and that of a up arrow up arrow down arrow down arrow spin order along the c and a directions in the commensurate magnetic state AF1. The ferroelectric polarization of MnWO4 in the spiral-spin state AF2 was examined by performing Berry phase calculations for a model superstructure to find that the ferroelectric polarization occurs along the b direction, in agreement with experiment.

Abstract:We report polarization reversal periodically controlled by the electric field in multiferroic MnWO4 with a pulsed field up to 52 T. The electric polarization cannot be reversed by successive opposite electric fields in low magnetic fields (< 14 T) at 4.2 K, whereas polarization reversal is directly achieved by two opposite electric fields under high magnetic fields (< 45 T). Interestingly, the polarization curve of rising and falling fields for H || u (magnetic easy axis) is irreversible when the magnetic field is close to 52 T. In this case, the rising and falling polarization curves can be individually reversed by the electric field, and thus require five cycles to recover to the initial condition by the order of the applied electric fields (+E, -E, -E, +E, +E). In addition, we find that ferroelectric phase IV can be tuned from parallel to antiparallel in relation to ferroelectric phase AF2 by applying a magnetic field approximated to the c axis.

Abstract:The crystal structure of the double tungstate NaFe(WO$_4$)$_2$ arises from that of the spin-driven multiferroic MnWO$_4$ by inserting non-magnetic Na layers. NaFe(WO$_4$)$_2$ exhibits a three-dimensional incommensurate spin-spiral structure at low temperature and zero magnetic field, which, however, competes with commensurate order induced by magnetic field. The incommensurate zero-field phase corresponds to the condensation of a single irreducible representation but it does not imply ferroelectric polarization because spirals with opposite chirality coexist. Sizable anharmonic modulations emerge in this incommensurate structure, which are accompanied by large magneto-elastic anomalies, while the onset of the harmonic order is invisible in the thermal expansion coefficient. In magnetic fields applied along the monoclinic axis, we observe a first-order transition to a commensurate structure that again is accompanied by large magneto-elastic effects. The large magnetoelastic coupling, a reduction of the $b$ lattice parameter, is thus associated only with the commensurate order. Upon releasing the field at low temperature, the magnetic order transforms to another commensurate structure that considerably differs from the incommensurate low-temperature phase emerging upon zero-field cooling. The latter phase, which exhibits a reduced ordered moment, seems to be metastable.

Abstract:High resolution inelastic neutron scattering reveals that the elementary magnetic excitations in multiferroic MnWO4 consist of low energy dispersive electromagnons in addition to the well-known spin-wave excitations. The latter can well be modeled by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with magnetic exchange coupling extending to the 12th nearest neighbor. They exhibit a spin-wave gap of 0.61(1) meV. Two electromagnon branches appear at lower energies of 0.07(1) meV and 0.45(1) meV at the zone center. They reflect the dynamic magnetoelectric coupling and persist in both, the collinear magnetic and paraelectric AF1 phase, and the spin spiral ferroelectric AF2 phase. These excitations are associated with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction, which is significant due to the rather large spin-orbit coupling.

Abstract:The spin wave dispersions of the low temperature antiferromagnetic phase (AF1) MnWO4 have been numerically calculated based on the recently reported non-collinear spin configuration with two different canting angles. A Heisenberg model with competing magnetic exchange couplings and single-ion anisotropy terms could properly describe the spin wave excitations, including the newly observed low-lying energy excitation mode [Formula: see text] meV appearing at the magnetic zone centre. The spin wave dispersion and intensities are highly sensitive to two differently aligned spin-canting sublattices in the AF1 model. Thus this study reinsures the otherwise hardly provable hidden polar character in MnWO4.

Abstract:Double corundum-related polar magnets are promising materials for multiferroic and magnetoelectric applications in spintronics. However, their design and synthesis is a challenge, and magnetoelectric coupling has only been observed in Ni3TeO6 among the known double corundum compounds to date. Here we address the high-pressure synthesis of a new polar and antiferromagnetic corundum derivative Mn2MnWO6, which adopts the Ni3TeO6-type structure with low temperature first-order field-induced metamagnetic phase transitions (T-N = 58 K) and high spontaneous polarization (similar to 63.3 mu C.cm(-2)). The magnetostrictionpolarization coupling in Mn2MnWO6 is evidenced by second harmonic generation effect, and corroborated by magnetic-field-dependent pyroresponse behavior, which together with the magnetic-field-dependent polarization and dielectric measurements, qualitatively indicate magnetoelectric coupling. Piezoresponse force microscopy imaging and spectroscopy studies on Mn2MnWO6 show switchable polarization, which motivates further exploration on magnetoelectric effect in single crystal/ thin film specimens.

Abstract:We report a study of magnetic dynamics in multiferroic hexagonal manganite HoMnO3 by far-infrared spectroscopy. The low-temperature magnetic excitation spectrum of HoMnO3 consists of magnetic-dipole transitions of Ho ions within the crystal-field split J = 8 manifold and of the triangular antiferromagnetic resonance of Mn ions. We determine the effective spin Hamiltonian for the Ho ion ground state. The magnetic-field splitting of the Mn antiferromagnetic resonance allows us to measure the magnetic exchange coupling between the rare-earth and Mn ions.

Landau theory for the phase diagram of the multiferroic Mn$_{1-x}$(Fe,Zn,Mg)$_{x}$WO$_{4}$

Abstract:We present a theoretical analysis of the temperature-magnetic field-concentration phase diagram of the multiferroic Mn$_{1-x}$M$_{x}$WO$_{4}$ (M=Fe, Zn, Mg), which exhibits three ordered phases, with collinear and non-collinear incommensurate and with a commensurate magnetic order. The middle phase is also ferroelectric. The analysis uses a semi-phenomenological Landau theory, based on a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with a single-ion anisotropy. With a small number of adjustable parameters, the Landau theory gives an excellent fit to all three transition lines, as well as the magnetic and the ferroelectric order parameters. The fit of the magnetic and ferroelectric order parameters is further improved by including the effect of fluctuations near the transitions. We demonstrate the highly frustrated nature of these materials and suggest a simple explanation for the dramatic effects of doping with different magnetic ions at the Mn sites. The model enables an examination of different sets of exchange couplings that were proposed by a number of groups. Small discrepancies are probably a consequence of small errors in the experimental magnetic parameters. In addition, using the Ginzburg criterion we estimate the temperature range in which fluctuations of the order parameters become important.

Abstract:Using ab initio band structure and model calculations we studied magnetic properties of one of the Mn$_4$ molecular magnets (Mn4(hmp)6), where two types of the Mn ions exist: Mn3+ and Mn2+. The direct calculation of the exchange constants in the GGA+U approximation shows that in contrast to a common belief the strongest exchange coupling is not between two Mn3+ ions (J_{bb}), but along two out of four exchange paths connecting Mn3+ and Mn2+ ions (J_{wb}). The microscopic analysis performed within the perturbation theory allowed to establish the mechanism for this largest ferromagnetic exchange constant. The charge ordering of the Mn ions results in the situation when the energy of the excited state in the exchange process is defined not by the large on-site Coulomb repulsion U, but by much smaller energy V, which stabilizes the charge ordered state. Together with strong Hund's rule coupling and specific orbital order this leads to a large ferromagnetic exchange interaction for two out of four Mn2+ --Mn3+ pairs.
