Abstract:From the first-principles calculations, we have studied the electronic and magnetic structures of LaFeAsO. It is found that a large magnetic moment of similar to 2.6 mu(B) is located around each Fe ion, embedded in the environment of itinerant electrons. In the ground state, these local Fe moments are in collinearly antiferromagnetic order, resulting from the interplay between the strong nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor superexchange antiferromagnetic interactions bridged by As atoms. The structure transition observed by the neutron scattering is shown to be magnetically driven. Our study suggests that the antiferromagnetic fluctuation plays an important role in Fe-based superconductors. This sheds light on the understanding of the pairing mechanism in these materials.
Surface and Bulk Electronic Structures of LaFeAsO Studied by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

Abstract:The electronic structure of LaFeAsO, a parent compound of iron-arsenic superconductors, is studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. By examining its dependence on photon energy, polarization, and sodium dosing, both the bulk and the surface contributions are identified. We find that a bulk band moves toward high binding energies below the structural transition temperature, and shifts smoothly across the spin-density-wave transition by about 25 meV. Our data suggest that the band reconstruction may play a crucial role in the spin-density-wave and the structural transitions. For the surface states, both the LaO-terminated and FeAs-terminated components are revealed. Certain small band shifts are observed for the FeAs-terminated surface states in the spin-density-wave state, which might be a reflection of the bulk electronic-structure reconstruction. Moreover, sharp quasiparticle peaks quickly rise at low temperatures, indicating drastic reduction in the scattering rate. A kink structure in one of the surface band is shown to be possibly related to the enhanced electron-phonon interactions on the polar surface.

Abstract:The anisotropic optical properties for superconductor LaFeAsO have been studied by full-potentiallinearized augmented plane wave(FLAPW) method based on density functional theory.In order to simulate the temperature effects,Lorentzian broadening(set as δ = 0.10 eV) is added into optical matrix elements during the calculation in these spectra.The optical conductivity spectra σ(ω),the reflectivity spectra R(ω) and electron energy loss spectra have been calculated.LaFeAsO is an anisotropic single crystal.The optical conductivity spectra along x-axis display quite different features in comparison with those of z-axis entirely,and the reflectivity spectra coincide well with the corresponding electron energy loss spectra especially about the characteristic peaks.In the optic conductivity spectra,the first intraband absorption along x-axis appear at 1.3 eV while it is at1.5 eV along z-axis.By further analysis,the properties are mainly caused by electronic transitions between the various states of the Fe atom.

Abstract:Abstract Materials with exceptional magnetism and superconductivity usually conceive emergent physical phenomena. Here, we investigate the physical properties of the (Eu,La)FeAs 2 system with double magnetic sublattices. The parent EuFeAs 2 shows anisotropy-associated magnetic behaviors, such as Eu-related moment canting and exchange bias. Through La doping, the magnetic anisotropy is enhanced with ferromagnetism of Eu 2+ realized in the overdoped region, and a special exchange bias of the superposed ferromagnetic/superconducting loop revealed in Eu 0.8 La 0.2 FeAs 2 . Meanwhile, the Fe-related antiferromagnetism shows unusual robustness against La doping. Theoretical calculation and 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy investigation reveal a doping-tunable dual itinerant/localized nature of the Fe-related antiferromagnetism. The coexistence of the Eu-related ferromagnetism, Fe-related robust antiferromagnetism, and superconductivity is further revealed in Eu 0.8 La 0.2 FeAs 2 , providing a platform for further exploration of potential applications and emergent physics. Finally, an electronic phase diagram is established for (Eu,La)FeAs 2 with the whole superconducting dome adjacent to the Fe-related antiferromagnetic phase, which is of benefit for seeking underlying clues to high-temperature superconductivity.

Abstract:The first-principles electronic structure calculations made substantial contribution to study of high Tc iron-pnictide superconductors. By the calculations, LaFeAsO was first predicted to be an antiferromagnetic semimetal, and the novel bi-collinear antiferromagnetic order was predicted for α-FeTe. Moreover, based on the calculations the underlying mechanism was proposed to be Arsenic-bridged antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction between the next-nearest neighbor Fe moments. In this article, this physical picture is further presented and discussed in association with the elaborate first-principles calculations on LaFePO. The further discussion of origin of the magnetism in iron-pnictides and in connection with superconductivity is presented as well.

Abstract:It is likely that antiferromagnetism has a role in the superconductivity of iron arsenide. But is the magnetism local, as described by the Heisenberg model, or itinerant, which is more in agreement with the Stoner model? The answer is both. Antiferromagnetism is relevant to high-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity because copper oxide and iron arsenide superconductors arise from electron- or hole-doping of their antiferromagnetic parent compounds1,2,3,4,5,6. There are two broad classes of explanation for antiferromagnetism: in the ‘local moment’ picture, appropriate for the insulating copper oxides1, antiferromagnetic interactions are well described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian7,8; whereas in the ‘itinerant model’, suitable for metallic chromium, antiferromagnetic order arises from quasiparticle excitations of a nested Fermi surface9,10. There has been contradictory evidence regarding the microscopic origin of the antiferromagnetic order in iron arsenide materials5,6, with some favouring a localized picture11,12,13,14,15 and others supporting an itinerant point of view16,17,18,19,20. More importantly, there has not even been agreement about the simplest effective ground-state Hamiltonian necessary to describe the antiferromagnetic order21,22,23,24,25. Here, we use inelastic neutron scattering to map spin-wave excitations in CaFe2As2 (refs 26, 27), a parent compound of the iron arsenide family of superconductors. We find that the spin waves in the entire Brillouin zone can be described by an effective three-dimensional local-moment Heisenberg Hamiltonian, but the large in-plane anisotropy cannot. Therefore, magnetism in the parent compounds of iron arsenide superconductors is neither purely local nor purely itinerant, rather it is a complicated mix of the two.
Superconducting pairing symmetry and energy gaps of the two-orbital t-t'-J-J' model: comparisons with the ARPES experiments in iron pnictides.

Abstract:Motivated by the discovery of the iron-based superconductors, we present the theoretical results on the superconducting phase diagram, the temperature-dependent Fermi surface structures in normal state and the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) character of quasiparticles of the two-orbital t-t'-J-J' model. In the reasonable physical parameter region of LaFeAsO1-xFx, we find the superconducting phase is stable, and the pairing symmetry is weakly anisotropic and nodeless d(x2-eta y2) + S-x2y2-wave, qualitatively in agreement with the ARPES experiments in iron pnictide superconductors. Nevertheless, the two ratios of the energy gaps to T-c deviate from the ARPES data, suggesting that a more elaborate theoretical model is needed.

Abstract:The antiferromagnetic order and structural distortion in the LaFe(As1-xSbx)O system have been investigated by powder neutron diffraction and physical properties measurements. Polycrystalline samples of LaFe(As1-xSbx)O (x<0.5) were prepared using solid state synthesis at ambient and high pressure. We find that the isoelectronic substitution of Sb for As decreases the structural and magnetic transition temperatures but, contrary to the effects of phosphorus substitution, superconductivity is not induced. Instead a slight increase in the Fe magnetic moment is observed.

Abstract:We present extensive 75As NMR and NQR data on the superconducting arsenides PrFeAs0.89F0.11 (Tc=45K), LaFeAsO0.92F0.08 (Tc=27K), LiFeAs (Tc=17K) and Ba0.72K0.28Fe2As2 (Tc=31.5K) single crystal, and compare with the nickel analog LaNiAsO0.9F0.1 (Tc=4.0K). In contrast to LaNiAsO0.9F0.1 where the superconducting gap is shown to be isotropic, the spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 in the Fe-arsenides decreases below Tc with no coherence peak and shows a step-wise variation at low temperatures. The Knight shift decreases below Tc and shows a step-wise T variation as well. These results indicate spin-singlet superconductivity with multiple gaps in the Fe-arsenides. The Fe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are anisotropic and weaker compared to underdoped copper-oxides or cobalt-oxide superconductors, while there is no significant electron correlations in LaNiAsO0.9F0.1. We will discuss the implications of these results and highlight the importance of the Fermi surface topology.

Abstract:We performed P-31-NMR measurements on LaFe(As1-xPx)O to investigate the relationship between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperature T-N and the moment mu(ord) are continuously suppressed with increasing P content x and disappear at x = 0.3 where bulk superconductivity appears. At this superconducting x = 0.3, quantum critical AFM fluctuations are observed, indicative of the intimate relationship between superconductivity and low-energy AFM fluctuations associated with the quantum-critical point in LaFe(As1-xPx)O. The relationship is similar to those observed in other isovalent-substitution systems, e.g., BaFe2(As1-xPx)(2) and SrFe2(As1-xPx)(2), with the '' 122 '' structure. Moreover, the AFM order reappears with further P substitution (x > 0.4). The variation of the ground state with respect to the P substitution is considered to be linked to the change in the band character of Fe-3d orbitals around the Fermi level.

Abstract:Following the discovery of long-range antiferromagnetic order in the parent compounds of high-transition-temperature (high-T(c)) copper oxides, there have been efforts to understand the role of magnetism in the superconductivity that occurs when mobile 'electrons' or 'holes' are doped into the antiferromagnetic parent compounds. Superconductivity in the newly discovered rare-earth iron-based oxide systems ROFeAs (R, rare-earth metal) also arises from either electron or hole doping of their non-superconducting parent compounds. The parent material LaOFeAs is metallic but shows anomalies near 150 K in both resistivity and d.c. magnetic susceptibility. Although optical conductivity and theoretical calculations suggest that LaOFeAs exhibits a spin-density-wave (SDW) instability that is suppressed by doping with electrons to induce superconductivity, there has been no direct evidence of SDW order. Here we report neutron-scattering experiments that demonstrate that LaOFeAs undergoes an abrupt structural distortion below 155 K, changing the symmetry from tetragonal (space group P4/nmm) to monoclinic (space group P112/n) at low temperatures, and then, at approximately 137 K, develops long-range SDW-type antiferromagnetic order with a small moment but simple magnetic structure. Doping the system with fluorine suppresses both the magnetic order and the structural distortion in favour of superconductivity. Therefore, like high-T(c) copper oxides, the superconducting regime in these iron-based materials occurs in close proximity to a long-range-ordered antiferromagnetic ground state.

Abstract:The electronic structures of undoped and fluorine-doped LaFeAsO superconductors and fluorine-doped SmFeAsO superconductors are studied using soft x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy combined with full potential linearized augmented planes waves (FP LAPW) calculations. The comparison between the numerical simulations and the experimental Fe L-emission spectra shows that the Fe states are concentrated near E-F, suggesting that the materials are not highly correlated systems. The comparison of the O K-edge and F K-edge spectra with the calculated density of states shows that the F dopants do not directly participate in the electronic structure near E-F, and so they serve the same purpose as an oxygen vacancy leading to an increase in the number of available charge carriers. Increasing the amount of fluorine doped into the structure of SmFeAsO is shown to cause a narrowing of the bandwidth of occupied O valence states.
Non-conventional Pairing Symmetry in Iron-Based Layered Superconductor LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1-\delta}$FeAs Revealed by Point-Contact Spectroscopy Measurements

Abstract:We present point-contact spectroscopy data for junctions between a normal metal and the newly discovered F-doped superconductor LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1-\delta}$FeAs (F-LaOFeAs). A zero-bias conductance peak was observed and its shape and magnitude suggests the presence of Andreev bound states at the surface of F-LaOFeAs, which provides a possible evidence of an unconventional pairing symmetry with a nodal gap function. The maximum gap value $\Delta_0\approx3.9\pm0.7$meV was determined from the measured spectra, in good agreement with the recent experiments on specific heat and lower critical field.

Abstract:The recent discovery of superconductivity in the so-called iron-oxypnictide family of compounds has generated intense interest. The layered crystal structure with transition metal ions in planar square lattice form and the discovery of spin-density-wave order near 130 K seem to hint at a strong similarity with the copper oxide superconductors. A burning current issue is the nature of the ground state of the parent compounds. Two distinct classes of theories have been put forward depending on the underlying band structures: local moment antiferromagnetic ground state for strong coupling approach and itinerant ground state for weak coupling approach. The local moment magnetism approach stresses on-site correlations and proximity to a Mott insulating state and thus the resemblance to cuprates; while the latter approach emphasizes the itinerant electron physics and the interplay between the competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic fluctuations. Such a controversy is partly due to the lack of conclusive experimental information on the electronic structures. Here we report the first angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) investigation of LaOFeP (Tc = 5.9 K), the first reported iron-based superconductor. Our results favor the itinerant ground state, albeit with band renormalization. In addition, our data reveal important differences between these and copper based superconductors.

Abstract:The relationship between spin, electron, and crystal structure has been one of the foremost issues in understanding the superconducting mechanism since the discovery of iron-based high temperature superconductors. Here, we report Mössbauer and first-principles calculations studies of the parent compound SrFeAsF with the largest temperature gap ($\sim$50\,K) between the structural and antiferromagnetic (AFM) transitions. Our results reveal that the structural transition has little effect on the electronic structure of the compound SrFeAsF while the development of the AFM order induces a redistribution of the charges near the Fermi level.

Superconductivity from repulsion in LiFeAs: novel s-wave symmetry and potential time-reversal symmetry breaking

Abstract:We analyze the structure of the pairing interaction and superconducting gap in LiFeAs by decomposing the pairing interaction for various kz cuts into s- and d-wave components and by studying the leading superconducting instabilities. We use the ten orbital tight-binding model, derived from ab-initio LDA calculations with hopping parameters extracted from the fit to ARPES experiments. We find that the pairing interaction almost decouples between two subsets, one consists of the outer hole pocket and two electron pockets, which are quasi-2D and are made largely out of dxy orbital, and the other consists of the two inner hole pockets, which are quasi-3D and are made mostly out of dxz and dyz orbitals. Furthermore, the bare inter-pocket and intra-pocket interactions within each subset are nearly equal. In this situation, small changes in the intra-pocket and inter-pocket interactions due to renormalizations by high-energy fermions give rise to a variety of different gap structures. We find four different configurations of the s-wave gap immediately below Tc: the one in which superconducting gap changes sign between two inner hole pockets and between the outer hole pocket and two electron pockets, the one in which the gap changes sign between two electron pockets and three hole pockets, the one in which the gap on the outer hole pocket differs in sign from the gaps on the other four pockets, and the one in which the gaps on two inner hole pockets have one sign, and the gaps on the outer hole pockets and on electron pockets have different sign. Different s-wave gap configurations emerge depending on whether the renormalized interactions increase attraction within each subset or increase the coupling between particular components of the two subsets. We argue that the state with opposite sign of the gaps on the two inner hole pockets has the best overlap with ARPES data.

Abstract:The (Ca,R)FeAs2 (R=La, Pr, etc.) superconductors with a signature of superconductivity transition above 40 K possess a new kind of block layers that consist of zig-zag As chains. We report the electronic structure of the new (Ca,La)FeAs2 superconductor investigated by both band structure calculations and high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. Band structure calculations indicate that there are four hole-like bands around the zone center Γ(0,0) and two electron-like bands near the zone corner M(π, π) in CaFeAs2. In our angle-resolved photoemission measurements on (Ca0.9La0.1)FeAs2, we have observed three hole-like bands around the Γ point and one electron-like Fermi surface near the M(π, π) point. These results provide important information to compare and contrast with the electronic structure of other iron-based compounds in understanding the superconductivity mechanism in the iron-based superconductors.

Abstract:The electronic origin of the huge magnetostructural effect in layered Fe-As compounds is elucidated using LiFeAs as a prototype. The crucial feature of these materials is the strong covalent bonding between Fe and As, which tends to suppress the exchange splitting. The bonding-antibonding splitting is very sensitive to the distance between Fe and As nuclei. We argue that the fragile interplay between bonding and magnetism is universal for this family of compounds. The exchange interaction is analyzed in real space, along with its correlation with covalency and doping. The range of interaction and itinerancy increase as the Fe-As distance is decreased. Superexchange makes a large antiferromagnetic contribution to the nearest-neighbor coupling, which develops large anisotropy when the local moment is not too small. This anisotropy is very sensitive to doping.
