Abstract:A new stable aqueous foam system was screened out by an orthogonal method and the effects of different factors on the rheological property of the foam were systematically investigated. The prepared aqueous foam has high stability. The foaming volume and half-life of 100 ml foam solution can reach 312 ml and 2274 min, respectively. The foam belongs to fine-celled foam, and the bubbles are wrapped by multilayered liquid films. The foam can maintain good stability even at high concentrations of salts and crude oil. For the foam rheology, with an increase in shear rate and salt concentration, the rheological model of the foam will change from power law model to Bingham model. Moreover, there exists optimum crude oil concentration and temperature to maximize the apparent viscosity of the foam. The apparent viscosity does not change significantly within several hours before and after foam drainage. In addition, a new wall slip correction method in foam rheology measurement is proposed.

Abstract:In the present study, SiO2 nanoparticles were first hydrophobically modified and then added into anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) stabilized water-based foam to improve the foam stability. The foam stability was experimentally evaluated by measuring surface tension, Zeta potential and half-life of the foam. The foam stabilizing mechanism was also studied from a micro perspective by molecular dynamics simulation through analyzing the equilibration configuration and MSD curve of both SDS surfactant and water molecules. The results show that foam exhibits an optimal stability when SiO2 concentration is 0.35 wt% under a specific surfactant concentration (0.5 wt%) in this work. The addition of SiO2 nanoparticles with suitable concentration could improve the adsorption between SDS molecules and nanoparticles, thus limiting the movement of SDS and restricting the movement of surrounding water molecules, which is beneficial to enhance the foam stability.

Abstract:<p>Aqueous foam is widely used in many industrial fields. Study on foam properties is the key to reducing additive amount of foaming agents and stabilizers as well as the economic cost, and improving utilization efficiency of foam products. The molecular aggregation behavior, foaming ability, foam drainage, and foam coarsening of the mixtures of hydrophilic silica nanoparticle (NP), anionic hydrocarbon surfactant (SDS), and amphoteric fluorocarbon surfactant (FS-50) were studied systematically. Results indicated that the addition of NP slightly affected the molecular aggregation behavior of the mixed solutions of SDS/FS-50. The surface activity, dynamic viscosity, and foaming ability of the foam dispersions increased slightly with increasing NP concentration. The conductivity of the dispersions decreased slightly with increasing NP concentration. Foam stability was significantly affected by NP concentration. When the NP concentration is lower than 1%, the addition of NPs accelerated foam drainage and coarsening. When the NP concentration is higher than 1%, the addition of NPs decelerated foam drainage and foam coarsening and thus reduced foam stability. The foam stability of SDS/FS-50 solutions was further enhanced with increasing NP concentration. This study provides a basis for the application of foams stabilized by NPs in fire extinguishing agents.</p>

Abstract:Experiment and molecular dynamics simulation were carried out to study the tunable stability of oil-containing SOS-stabilized Nitrogen-in-water foam. The experimental results show that the foam stability could be tuned by the concentrations of SDS and modified SiO2 nanoparticles. In the foam systems with a low SDS concentration (0.2 wt.%), the foams show poor stability and the foam stability was almost not affected by the addition of modified SiO2 nanoparticles. The foam stability was greatly improved at moderate SDS concentration (0.5 wt.%), it enhanced first and then weakened with the increase of modified SiO2 concentration, and the half-life time achieved a maximum value of 1292 s at 0.05 wt.% modified SiO2. However, at high SDS concentration (0.8 wt.%), the foam stability was pretty good except for when the modified SiO2 concentration is too high (>0.2 wt.%). The microscopic mechanism was obtained by investigating the structural and dynamic properties of the foam film. The simulation work showed consistent results of foam stability with the experimental results. Moreover, it also revealed that the concentration and configuration of SDS will affect its interaction with SiO2 and oil molecule, which is critical to foam stability. Abstract:Foams are ultrastable when all the aging processes arrest. We make such foams by precipitating sodium dodecyl sulfate with potassium chloride during the foaming process. The precipitate crystals adsorb onto the bubble surfaces to arrest coarsening and stop drainage by blocking in the interstices around the bubbles. However, if the concentration of SDS is too high, the foams are no longer ultrastable. The transition is sudden and corresponds to the point at which significant dodecyl sulfate remains in solution. The presence of the noncrystallized surfactant allows the foam to coarsen leading to the eventual disappearance of the foams, even if the crystals in the continuous phase can still block drainage. The transition occurs as the concentration of nonsolubilized KCl becomes higher than the concentration of SDS, giving us a linear stability boundary. The system offers an interesting alternative to other types of particles because the surfactant crystals break and reform as the temperature is cycled, which makes for reusable solutions and stimulable foams.

Abstract:The stable maintenance effect of a chemical oil displacement agent on a foam liquid film usually creates problems with the oilfields surface system. To achieve comprehensive insights into the influence mechanism of these chemical agent components on the foam liquid film, an "SDBS/HPAM/OH-" water-based foam simulation system and corresponding control systems were constructed by adjusting the categories and quantities of component molecules by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The simulated results indicated that the foam stability follows the order of "SDBS/HPAM/OH−" system > "SDBS/HPAM" system > "SDBS" system. The smaller the inclination angle of the SDBS molecular tail chain, the greater the tendency of the SDBS molecular configuration to be "upright" at the gas−liquid interface, which is not conducive to preventing the aggregation and penetration of gas molecules at the gas−liquid interface. Although the presence of HPAM molecules can significantly enhance the stability of the liquid film by restricting the liquid film's drainage and the diffusion of gas molecules, the addition of HPAM molecules would weaken the formation ability of the foam liquid film. Through decreasing the aggregation of cations around the co-adsorption layer, OH− not only enhances the interfacial activity of SDBS molecules, but also reduces the electrostatic repulsion between –COO− groups on the HPAM molecular chain, which makes the foam more stable. With an increase in the pH, SDBS concentration, and HPAM concentration, the stability of foam liquid film was strengthened. These results are helpful in facilitating new insights into the formation and stabilization mechanism of water-based foams. In particular, they provide support for the development and application of new defoaming technologies.

Abstract:A novel CO2/N2 switchable aqueous foam was developed using a CO2-responsive surfactant N,N-dimethyl-N-dodecyl amine (C12A) and a conventional surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The performance and mechanism of this switchable foam were studied by both experiment and molecular simulation methods. Experimental results demonstrate that the foam stabilized by SDS/C12A surfactants has better stability and water carrying capacity than single C12A foam. The foam could be rapidly switched between stable and unstable states at ambient temperature with CO2 or N2 as the triggers. Simulation results shows that when CO2 was introduced, most of SDS and C12A molecules aggregated in the water phase, instead of adsorbing at the air-water interface to stabilize the foam films. The strong electrostatic attraction between protonated C12A and SDS molecules could account for the aggregation. Due to the presence of limited surfactants located at the air-water interface after introducing CO2, the foam bursts quickly.

Abstract:Foam fluids are widely used in petroleum engineering, but long-standing foam stability problems have limited the effectiveness of their use. The study explores the synergistic effects and influencing factors of SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2-NPs) with different wettability properties and three different surfactants. The paper investigates the foaming performance of different types of surfactants and analyzes and compares the stability of foam after adding hydrophilic and hydrophobic SiO2-NPs from macroscopic as well as microscopic perspectives, and the effects of temperature and inorganic salts on the stability of mixed solutions. The experimental results show that: 1) hydrophilic nanoparticles can significantly enhance the foam stability of amphoteric surfactants, with a small increase in the foam stability of anionic and cationic surfactants; 2) The concentration of nanoparticles did not have a significant effect on the stability of the cationic surfactants and this conclusion was verified in the experimental results of the surface tension measured below;3) The cationic surfactants showed better temperature resistance at temperatures of 50–90 °C. Both amphoteric surfactant solutions with the addition of hydrophilic SiO2-NPs or hydrophobic SiO2-NPs significantly improved the temperature resistance of the foam at high temperatures. The anionic surfactant solution with hydrophobic SiO2-NPs did not enhance the solution temperature resistance; 4) The surface tension of the surfactant solution gradually increases with increasing concentration of hydrophilic or hydrophobic SiO2-NPs and then levels off; 5) the hydrophilic SiO2-NPs had a significant effect on the salt tolerance of the anionic and amphoteric surfactant solutions. The salt tolerance of cationic surfactant solutions with hydrophobic SiO2-NPs was better than that of surfactants with hydrophilic SiO2-NPs.

Abstract:Mixed surfactants have antagonistic or synergistic effects on the air/liquid interface of foams, representing two opposite interactions about destroying or stabilizing foams. In this paper, mixed surfactant systems containing non-ionic surfactant polyoxyethylene alkyl ether (AEO) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were discussed by molecular dynamics simulation to study the mechanism of decreasing stability of SDS foam after AEO was added. The results showed that with the addition of AEO, the interaction between SDS molecules is weakened, and the thickness of hydrated shell around the polar head of SDS decreases. In order to simulate the process of foam drainage and rupture, steered molecular dynamics (SMD) containing two external forces on the foam film was performed. One is about the z-axis vertical external force, representing the stability of SDS hydrated layer at the interface; the other is about the external force in horizontal direction, representing the rupture process of the liquid film. The simulated results showed that the higher the concentration of AEO in the mixed surfactant interface layer, the smaller the external force to destroy the foam film interface. In addition, the free energy change of AEO molecules from the water phase through the SDS layer to the air phase further showed that the addition of AEO can reduce the stability of SDS foam films and play a defoaming role in the studied system. The simulated conclusions were consistent with the experimental results about the decreasing stability of SDS foam after AEO was added.

Abstract:Ultra-stable foams with multilayer films which were similar to the structure of colloidal gas aphrons (CGA) were designed in view of increasing the amount of bound water molecules at molecular level. This liquid films in foams were spontaneously assembled by 1-dodecanol (DDA), sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) molecular with a remarkable long-term foam lifetime. The states of water molecules as well as the molecular arrangement in foam films have been analyzed via molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to explore microscopic character and stable mechanism of multilayer films of foams. We found that the combined effect of SDS, DDA and PVA could not only increase distribution intensity of bound water molecules in foam film layers, but it also could decrease the gas diffusion rate to balance the pressure of the air layers of the multilayer foams.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the gas-liquid interface characteristics of short-chain fluorocarbon surfactant FS-50 and hydrocarbon surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and their mixed systems. The foam properties of SDS, FS-50, and their mixed solutions were experimentally determined. Then, based on the molecular dynamics simulation method, the interaction mechanism of surfactant molecules at the gas-liquid interface was simulated and analyzed by constructing a foam-liquid membrane system containing surfactant molecules and water molecules. The experimental results show that FS-50 can effectively enhance the foam stability when the concentration is lower than 0.16 wt% and the mixing ratio with SDS is not more than 1:1; the simulation results show that FS-50 can change the arrangement of SDS molecules at the gas-liquid interface. Simultaneously, there is a competitive adsorption phenomenon between FS-50 and SDS at the gas-liquid interface. The low mixing ratio FS-50 can increase the thickness of the gas-liquid interface of the mixed system and the ability of SDS to form hydrogen bonds with water, enhance the water-locking ability of SDS, and further improve the stability of the foam liquid film. The interaction mechanism between short-chain fluorocarbons and SDS surfactants at the gas-liquid interface was revealed by simulation, which provided theoretical guidance for optimizing the performance of the foam liquid film.

Abstract:Surface activity, foam properties and aggregation behavior of a short-chain fluorocarbon surfactant (FS-50), an anionic hydrocarbon surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, denoted as SDS) and FS-50/SDS mixture are systemically studied for the first time in this paper. Surface activity was characterized by surface tension. Foam properties, including foamability and foam stability, of the mixed systems were studied based on the standard Ross-Miles method. The aggregation behavior of the surfactant solution was observed by using cryo-transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM). The results show that FS-50 exhibits good surface activity and foam properties, which reveals that as a kind of environment friendly short-chain fluorocarbon surfactant, FS-50 is a perfect substitute of long-chain ones. Surface activity and foam properties of FS-50/SDS mixed system are enhanced by adding FS-50 and further improved by the increase of FS-50 concentration. The foam properties are enhanced by tightening the arrangement of surface adsorbed molecules at the liquid-air interface. A synergistic interaction exists in the mixture of short-chain FS-50 and SDS, which is produced through microscopic spheroidal-to-wormlike transition. Finally, the macroscopic performance of FS-50/SDS mixed solution is enhanced by the changes of composition and morphology of the adsorbed film layer. This work shows an environmental friendly surfactants mixed system and provides a more comprehensive perceive of the relationship between macroscopic properties and micro-aggregation structure of short-chain fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon surfactants mixed system.

Abstract:<p>The molecular interaction, foaming ability, and foam stability of the mixtures of hydrophilic silica nanoparticles, a cationic hydrocarbon surfactant, and a nonionic short-chain fluorocarbon surfactant were studied systematically. The results indicate that nanoparticle concentration has a considerable impact on surface activity, dynamic viscosity, conductivity, foaming ability, and foam stability. The surface activity and dynamic viscosity of the foam dispersions increased rapidly with increasing nanoparticle concentration. The conductivity and foaming ability of the dispersions decreased with the addition of nanoparticles and further decreased with increasing nanoparticle concentration. At a nanoparticle concentration below 0.1%, the addition of nanoparticles accelerated foam drainage and coarsening. At a nanoparticle concentration above 0.1%, the addition of nanoparticles enhanced foam stability by decelerating foam drainage and foam coarsening. The foam stability was further enhanced as the nanoparticle concentration increased. This study provides a basis for the application of foams stabilized by nanoparticles in fire extinguishing agents.</p>

Abstract:To study the synergistic stabilization mechanism ofSiO2nanoparticles and anionic surfactants during foam fracturing,inorganic SiO2nanoparticles and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)were used as a foam stabilizer and foaming agent, respectively, toprepare foamfluids. Foam stability was analyzed by evaluating thefoam volume, half-life, and morphology. The synergistic stabiliza-tion mechanism of SDS and SiO2nanoparticles was studied bymeasuring and analyzing the surface tension, contact angle, andbubble diameter. The results indicated that, at a suitable SDSconcentration, the surface activity of the nanoparticles can bealtered to enhance the adsorption of SiO2nanoparticles at thegas-liquid interface and, consequently, improve foam stability.However, excess SDS caused a decrease in foam stability. Uponincreasing the SDS concentration, the contact angle between the SiO2nanoparticles and water decreased gradually, and the SiO2nanoparticles became increasingly hydrophilic. The average bubble diameter of the SiO2-SDS foam systems decreases with theincrease in time, and the foam system with the smaller change trend of the bubble diameter is more stable. Moreover, with theincrease in time, the nanoparticles adsorbed by the ruptured bubbles are transferred to the surrounding of the bubbles that are notruptured, increasing their liquidfilm thickness and improving the stability of the foam system. These results provide an experimentalbasis for the application of the nanoparticle in foam stabilization during coal seam fracturing.

Abstract:Nanoparticles (NPs) have tremendous potential for improving the stability of environmentally friendly fluorine-free firefighting foams. However, many properties of nanoparticle-stabilized foams are still unclear before application. In the present study, hydrophilic SiO2 NPs with different specific surface area (SSA), a nonionic silicone surfactant (CoatOsil-77), and a zwitterionic hydrocarbon surfactant (BS-12) were chosen for preparing mixed dispersions in water to investigate the effect of NP SSA on fluorine-free foams. The interaction between NPs and surfactants in water, foaming ability, and foam stability of the mixed dispersions were systematically investigated. Results indicate that the conductivity and foaming ability of the mixed dispersions first decreased and then increased, whereas the dynamic viscosity and surface tension were just the reverse with increasing NP SSA. The presence of NPs with SSA of 300 or 400 m2/g enhanced foam stability of the mixed dispersions by delaying foam drainage and coarsening. The optimal SSA for NPs enhancing foam stability is 300 m2/g. The results of this study could provide theoretical guidance for the application of NPs in the development of environmentally friendly fluorine-free firefighting foams.

Abstract:In this study, the effect of sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) on the foam stability of dodecylamine (DDA) and on its adsorption configuration at the gas-liquid interface was investigated. Froth stability experiments, surface tension measurements, time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry measurements, and molecular dynamics simulation calculations were performed in this investigation. The results revealed that the foam stability of DDA solution was extremely strong, and the addition of SDS could decrease the foam stability when the concentration of DDA was less than a certain value. The decrease in foam stability could be ascribed to several reasons, namely, the big cross-sectional area of SDS at the gas-liquid interface and low adsorption capacity of surfactants at the gas-liquid interface, the high surface tension, the change in the double-layer structure, the small thickness of the gas-liquid interfacial layer, the weak interaction intensity between the head groups of the surfactants and the water molecules, the strong movement ability of the water molecules around the head groups, and the sparse and less upright arrangement configuration of molecules at the gas-liquid interface. These findings can greatly help in solving the strong foam stability problem in DDA flotation and provide a method for reducing foam stability.

Abstract:To study the synergistic stabilization mechanism of SiO2 nanoparticles and anionic surfactants during foam fracturing, inorganic SiO2 nanoparticles and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were used as a foam stabilizer and foaming agent, respectively, to prepare foam fluids. Foam stability was analyzed by evaluating the foam volume, half-life, and morphology. The synergistic stabilization mechanism of SDS and SiO2 nanoparticles was studied by measuring and analyzing the surface tension, contact angle, and bubble diameter. The results indicated that, at a suitable SDS concentration, the surface activity of the nanoparticles can be altered to enhance the adsorption of SiO2 nanoparticles at the gas–liquid interface and, consequently, improve foam stability. However, excess SDS caused a decrease in foam stability. Upon increasing the SDS concentration, the contact angle between the SiO2 nanoparticles and water decreased gradually, and the SiO2 nanoparticles became increasingly hydrophilic. The average bubble diameter of the SiO2–SDS foam systems decreases with the increase in time, and the foam system with the smaller change trend of the bubble diameter is more stable. Moreover, with the increase in time, the nanoparticles adsorbed by the ruptured bubbles are transferred to the surrounding of the bubbles that are not ruptured, increasing their liquid film thickness and improving the stability of the foam system. These results provide an experimental basis for the application of the nanoparticle in foam stabilization during coal seam fracturing.

Abstract:We report evidence for stabilization and functionalization of aqueous foams stabilized by Quillaja saponin (QS)-coated nanodroplets. In contrast to foams stabilized by QS, stabilized the foams of QS-coated nanodroplets showed superior foamability, stability and multi-functional characteristics. Specifically, the half-life time of the foam stabilized by nanodroplets was approximately 4 times that of saponin. The microstructure observation indicates the nanodroplets from assembly of saponin around oil droplet were strong attachment at the gas-liquid interface and stabling a large gas-liquid interfacial area in a hierarchical structure. The surface dynamic adsorption and large deformation rheology were performed, revealed that QS nanodroplets were almost irreversibly adsorbed at air-liquid interface and exhibited less surface desorption and high elastic-viscous response to a large mechanical deformation. These nanodroplets stabilized foams presented a large capacity for loading hydrophobic flavors and nutrients (e.g., β-carotene and curcumin), which could be used to create a new class of foam food products with sustained release of flavors and/or health benefit functionality.
