Abstract:Clay-humic complexes are commonly distributed in natural environments. They play very important roles in regulating the transport and retention of hydrophobic organic contaminants in soils and sediments. This study examined the structural changes of humic acid (HA) after adsorption by clay minerals and determined phenanthrene sorption by clay-humic complexes. Solid- and liquid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), for the first time, provided direct evidence for HA fractionation during adsorption on mineral surfaces, that is, aliphatic fractions were preferentially adsorbed by clay minerals while aromatic fractions were left in the solution. The ratio of UV absorbance of HA at 465 and 665 nm (E4 to E6 ratio), which is related to aromaticity, corroborated with the NMR results. For both montmorillonite and kaolinite, adsorbed HA fractions had higher sorption linearity (N) and affinity (K(oc)) than the source HA. The K(oc) of adsorbed HA for the clay-humic complexes could be up to several times higher than that of the source HA. This large increase may be contributed by the low polarity of the bound HA. Moreover, for each mineral, the N values of adsorbed HA increased with increasing HA loading. It is believed that HA may develop a more condensed structure on mineral surface at lower HA loading level due to the stronger interactions between HA and mineral surface as a result of close contacts.

Abstract:The adsorption of humic acid (HA) onto highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surfaces at different concentrations has been studied by atomic force microscopy. When HA concentration was increased from 10 to 1,000 mg/L, HA can sequentially form spherical particles, layered structures, and connected blocks on HOPG surfaces. The findings of the layer structures and small amount of fine chains have been verified and discussed. When HA was acidified by addition of acetic acid, it changed into small rigid particles. These results indicated that HA can be considered as supramolecular associations of self-assembling heterogeneous and relatively small molecules, and a small amount of polymers. The present results are important for understanding HA molecular structures and their adsorption characteristic on carbonaceous surfaces.
Enhanced Adsorption Of Humic Acids On Ordered Mesoporous Carbon Compared With Microporous Activated Carbon

Abstract:Humic acids are ubiquitous in surface and underground waters and may pose potential risk to human health when present in drinking water sources. In this study, ordered mesoporous carbon was synthesized by means of a hard template method and further characterized by X-ray diffraction, N(2) adsorption, transition electron microscopy, elemental analysis, and zeta-potential measurement. Batch experiments were conducted to evaluate adsorption of two humic acids from coal and soil, respectively, on the synthesized carbon. For comparison, a commercial microporous activated carbon and nonporous graphite were included as additional adsorbents; moreover, phenol was adopted as a small probe adsorbate. Pore size distribution characterization showed that the synthesized carbon had ordered mesoporous structure, whereas the activated carbon was composed mainly of micropores with a much broader pore size distribution. Accordingly, adsorption of the two humic acids was substantially lower on the activated carbon than on the synthesized carbon, because of the size-exclusion effect. In contrast, the synthesized carbon and activated carbon showed comparable adsorption for phenol when the size-exclusion effect was not in operation. Additionally, we verified by size-exclusion chromatography studies that the synthesized carbon exhibited greater adsorption for the large humic acid fraction than the activated carbon. The pH dependence of adsorption on the three carbonaceous adsorbents was also compared between the two test humic acids. Abstract:This study investigated the adsorption of humic acid (HA) by bi-functional resin JN-10, which removed the HA more effectively than the commercial resins D-301, D-201, XAD-7, and globe active carbon F-400. The difference between the FT-IR spectroscopy and 13C NMR analysis of JN-10 before and after it adsorbing the HA revealed that both hydrophobic interaction and electric attraction were the adsorption force for the HA. The related thermodynamic parameters exhibited that the adsorption of the HA by JN-10 was an endothermic process. The occurring of adsorption was due to the increase of entropy, and the electric attraction was also a main adsorption force. In order to investigate the influence of the molecule weight (MW) of the HA on its removal by JN-10, the HA with the MWs ranging from 2000 to 100,000Da was divided into six fractions by ultra-filtration. The HA with a medium MW (6000–10,000Da) was preferentially removed by JN-10 due to the synergistic effect of hydrophilicity, molecular size, and aromaticity of the HA. The adsorption capacity of JN-10 for the HA increased in the presence of low concentration of alkali-earth metal ions Ca2+ and Mg2+, which neutralized the negative charges of the HA, but it decreased as the concentration of these ions increased because the hydrates formed by the alkali-earth metal ions occupied the adsorption sites of the resin.

Abstract:Covalent triazine-based frameworks (CTFs) are an emerging class of polymers whose adsorption properties of organic chemicals are not well understood. The main objective of this work was to evaluate combined effects of the functional groups of aromatic solutes and the triazine structure of a synthesized CTF on adsorption in aqueous solutions. Adsorption of the hydroxyl-, amino-, nitro-, and sulfonate-substituted monocyclic and bicyclic aromatic compounds was generally stronger than their non-substituted, nonpolar counterparts (benzene and naphthalene). When compared with Amberlite XAD-4 resin, one of the most common and widely used polymeric adsorbents, the CTF showed much stronger adsorption toward the polar and/or ionic compounds. To explain the adsorption enhancement of CTF, several specific, non-hydrophobic mechanisms were proposed, including hydrogen bonding (hydroxyl- and amino-substituted compounds), electrostatic attraction (anionized compounds), and π-π electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction (nitroaromatic compounds) with the triazine structure of CTF. The hypothesized mechanisms were further supported by the observed pH dependence of adsorption. Resulting from size exclusion, adsorption of large-size dissolved humic acids on the homogeneous, nanopored (1.2 nm in size) CTF was negligible and did not affect adsorption of aromatic solutes. Additional advantages of fast adsorption/desorption kinetics and complete adsorption reversibility made CTF a superior adsorbent for aromatic compounds.

Abstract:Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are highly stable, persistent, and ubiquitous in the environment with significant concerns growing with regards to both human and ecosystem health. Due to the high stability to both biological and chemical attack, the only currently feasible approach for their removal from water is adsorbent technology. The main objective of this study was to assess a covalent triazine-based framework (CTF) adsorbent for removal from aqueous solutions of perfluoro C4, C6, and C8 carboxylates and sulfonates including the two C8s most commonly monitored, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Adsorption affinity and capacity were quantified and compared to three commonly used sorbents: pulverized microporous activated carbon, single-walled carbon nanotubes, and Amberlite IRA-400 anion-exchange resin. CTF adsorbent exhibited pronouncedly higher adsorption affinity and capacity of PFAAs than other test sorbents. The remarkably strong adsorption to CTF can be attributed to the favored electrostatic interaction between the protonated triazine groups on the inner wall of the hydrophobic CTF pore and the negatively charged head groups of the PFAAs intercalated between the CTF layers. The homogeneous, nanosized pores (1.2 nm) of CTF hindered adsorption of a large-sized dissolved humic acid, thus minimizing the suppression of PFAA adsorption. Additionally, regeneration of CTF was easily accomplished by simply raising pH > 11, which inhibited the electrostatic adsorptive interaction of PFAAs.

Abstract:Humic acid is generally considered as one of ubiquitous pollutants in surface and ground water. In this study, aminopropyl functionalized SBA-15 adsorbents with varied aminopropyl contents were prepared via the co-condensation method and characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption, IR spectroscopy and zeta-potential measurements. The adsorption behaviors of the adsorbents for humic acid were investigated using batch experiments and adsorption kinetic tests. SBA-15 exhibited low humic acid adsorption amount. In contrast, substantially enhanced humic acid adsorption was observed over aminopropyl functionalized SBA-15 adsorbents. Humic acid adsorption over the adsorbents could be well described using Langmuir adsorption model and the maximum humic acid adsorption capacities were found to be 8.5, 72.5 and 117.6mgg−1 for SBA-15, APTS-SBA-15-5% and APTS-SBA-15-10%, respectively. In addition, increasing solution pH led to monotonically decreased humic acid adsorption over aminopropyl functionalized SBA-15. Humic acid adsorption process over functionalized SBA-15 could be well described using pseudo-second-order kinetic model and HA adsorption was controlled by both external and intraparticle diffusion based on the fitting results using Weber–Morris model.

Abstract:Adsorptions of humic acid( HA) and tanic acid(TA) on weakly basic resin (D-301) were investigated. The result indicates high molecular weight of humic acid can decrease resin's adsorption capacity. Furthermore, resin's adsorption capacity for humic acid is slightly higher in the presence of low concentration of phenol, but a decrease in resin's adsorption capacity for humic, acid is observed in the test when concentration of phenol is high. NaCl and pH also show an influence to resin's adsorption capacity.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of molecular weight (MW) on the adsorption by anion exchange resin, a commercial humic acid (HA) was fractionated into four sizes: HA1 (<1,000 Da), HA2 (1,000–2,500 Da), HA3 (2,500–10,000 Da), and HA4 (>10,000 Da). The characterization reveals that aromaticity increases as the MW rises, while the negative charge follows the order HA3 > HA4 > HA2 > HA1. The adsorption maximum of HAs is 10.7, 18.8, 250, and 200 mg (total organic carbon, TOC)/g for HA1, HA2, HA3, and HA4, respectively. The results suggest that the effect of MW on adsorption is attributed to the different negative charge of HAs, and the effect of size exclusion is not observed.

Abstract:Humic acid (HA) in makeup water is one of the important safety issues of high-parameter power plants. Herein, the Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (NH2-UiO-66) was applied to remove humic acid in water. The mesoporous of NH2-UiO-66 was controlled by surfactants sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) to increase the adsorption of HA. The adsorption of HA at 25°C and pH 7 increased fast at the first 0.5 h and then gradually reached equilibrium after 10 h. The maximum adsorption capacity was 108.93 mg g−1, which removal efficiency was high as 95.0%. The morphology and adsorption properties of NH2-UiO-66 were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface charge, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), N2 adsorption–desorption, and adsorption test. The adsorption process of HA accorded with the pseudo-second-order kinetics, while the adsorption isotherm conformed to be the Langmuir model and the adsorption was proved to be monolayer adsorption. Adsorption was the spontaneous and endothermic process (ΔG°<0, ΔH°>0). The accessible surface area provided by mesopores on the 5 different Zr-MOFs was the reason for the enhanced HA adsorption capacity. These results provided useful information for effective HA removing and enhanced our understanding of the adsorption mechanism of HA on NH2-UiO-66.Graphical abstract

Abstract:In this paper, a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) is used to investigate humic acid (HA) adsorption onto alumina (Al(2)O(3)). The amount of adsorption and layer structures of HA were determined by the real-time monitoring of resonance frequency and energy dissipation changes (Δf and ΔD). The effect of HA concentration, HA molecular characteristics (molecular weight and polarity), and pH on HA adsorption onto Al(2)O(3) were investigated. The mass of HA adsorption increases as the concentration of HA increases. The masses are about 24, 60, and 87 ng cm(-2) as the concentration of DOC is 1.0, 4.85, and 92.0 mg L(-1), respectively. The adsorbed layer of HA is more nonrigid, and the mass of HA adsorption is higher at weakly acidic pH values. It was 20, 80, 65, and 45 ng cm(-2) at pH values of 4.5, 5.5, 6.5, and 8.0, respectively. This reveals that efficient HA removal by coagulation at weakly acidic pH values is not just due to the hydrolysis of Al ions as previously presumed. The adsorbed layer of hydrophobic HA is more nonrigid than hydrophobic HA (fractionated by Amberlite XAD-8 resin), and the mass adsorption for the hydrophobic fraction is about four times higher than the hydrophilic fraction (120 ng cm(-2) and 30 ng cm(-2)). The method is of value in the research to establish a quantified calculation model for the coagulation process.

Abstract:In this paper, the adsorptions of humic acid on three resins were investigated. The adsorption of resin is relative to both pore size and water. The pH also affects the adsorption of humic acid because of the different formations of humic acid in solution. The capacity of D-301 to adsorb humic acids in the presence of low concentration of Pb2+ is slightly higher than in the absence of this metal, but in the presence of high concentration of Pb2+ the adsorption capacity of resin is decreased.

Abstract:In this paper, the adsorption behavior of humic acid (HA) on kaolin was investigated and the characteristics of HA-kaolin complexes were studied by means of X-ray diffraction pattern,TGA and IR. According to the results obtained,when the HA-kaolin complexes are washed six times,the HA can be stably combined with the kaolin; the Fruendlich-type equation can describe the adsorption isotherm of HA on kaolin well,and the K_f of HA on kaolin is 0.857; there exist apparent absorption peaks of hydrocarbon in the IR; chemical adsorption plays a major role in the interaction between HA and kaolinite, and the adsorption behavior mainly takes place on the hydroxyl sites of aluminum.
Removal of Humic Acid by UiO-66(Zr) and MIL-100(Fe) Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) Adsorption

Abstract:The escalating presence of humic acid (HA) in aquatic systems poses significant ecological and potable water treatment challenges, altering the color, taste, and odor of water and fueling algal blooms that deplete oxygen levels to the detriment of aquatic life. Traditional techniques like coagulation-flocculation, membrane filtration, oxidation fall short in efficiency due to its small fraction of HA. This study confronts the pervasive issue of HA contamination by leveraging the advanced properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In this work, two representative MOFs are synthesized and well characterized. Then, their capability for removal HA by adsorption process in water for HA treatment are detailed evaluated. The findings from this research extend beyond academic curiosity, offering actionable insights for water treatment facilities and environmental management agencies. The synthesis of MOFs which are UiO-66(Zr), MIL-100(Fe). Each MOFs have been applied to remove HA by adsorption under different condition. The effect of contacting time, initial pH, adsorbent dosage has been evaluated. After adsorption experiment, MOF samples prepared to dry and went through characterization. Removal of HA by MOF adsorption showed UiO-66(Zr) and MIL-100(Fe) examined rapid reaching equilibrium state with 10-15 min. Among various pH conditions, UiO-66(Zr) and MIL-100(Fe) showed the highest adsorption capacity under acidic conditions. MIL-100(Fe) achieves a higher maximum adsorption capacity than MIL-100(Fe). MOF after adsorption samples went through characterizations and their remained characteristics indicating the adsorption not affected the structure of the MOFs.
Investigating the Adsorption of Humic Acid from Water Using CTS/PAM and CTS/PAM/EDTA Adsorbents

Abstract:In recent decades, reports from around the globe indicate an increase in natural organic matters (NOMs) in surface waters, which has a negative impact on drinking water purification and causes problems such as the taste and color of water, reducing the amount of dissolved oxygen in water, causing membrane fouling in the filtration process, and acting as a precursor for the formation of an antiseptic by-product. This work used the adsorption process to evaluate the elimination of natural organic compounds in aquatic environments. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a crosslinker for chitosan (CTS) and N, N-methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker for polyacrylamide (PAM) were used to prepare humic acid (HA) adsorbents utilizing a two-step procedure. The FTIR spectroscopy proved the EDTA cross-linking agent was effective with the semicrosslinking CTS/PAM hydrogel. CTS/PAM/EDTA double network (DN) hydrogel exhibited a higher HA adsorption capacity ( qe = 107.7 mg/g) than CTS/PAM ( qe = 59.3 mg/g) at pH = 7 and an initial concentration of 60 mg·L−1 during 60 min. Also, results demonstrate that CTS/PAM/EDTA DN hydrogels showed faster adsorption kinetics than CTS/PAM.

Abstract:Adsorption of humic, tannic and gallic acids by a macro weakly basic ion-exchange resin JN-01 was studied. The adsorption capacity of this resin for gallic and tannic acids is much higher than that for humic acid, which can be explained on the basis of both their molecular size and ionization degree. Furthermore, humic acid is separated into different components with molecular weight in the range from 2000 Da to 100000 Da by ultra-filter, and their adsorption isotherms on resin JN-01 indicate that humic acid’s molecular weight is an important factor which makes significant influence on adsorption. Finally, changes in the amount of Cu2+ and Pb2+ adsorbed on resin JN-01 as a function of the concentration of each of these three acids were studied. A large increase in the heavy metal ions uptake is observed in the presence of humic substance, such advantages are due to the interactions between the heavy metal ions and the unbound functional groups of the adsorbed organic acids.

Abstract:The Mg/Al-layered double hydroxides and iron oxide (LDHs-Fe3O4) nanocomposites were synthesized via a facile two-step wet chemistry route. The fabricated samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N-2 adsorption-desorption analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The resulting Fe3O4 nanoparticles possess unique magnetic properties for LDHs-Fe3O4 separation and the LDHs-Fe3O4 nanocomposites were applied to remove natural organic macromolecular compound (humic acid, HA) from contaminated groundwater. The results indicate that HA adsorption on LDHs-Fe3O4 is strongly dependent on pH and weakly dependent on ionic strength. The adsorption of HA onto LDHs-Fe3O4 occurs by ion exchange with both the intercalated and surface anions of the LDHs. The magnetite nanoparticles could provide extra adsorption sites for HA removal. In addition, the adsorption isotherm of HA on LDHs-Fe3O4 can be well fitted by the Freundlich model and the maximum adsorption capacity of HA onto LDHs-Fe3O4 reaches 353.82 mg g(-1), displaying higher efficiency for HA removal than previously reported adsorbents. Abstract:Humic acid (HA) is a component of natural organic matter (NOM) with a high molecular weight and high complexity. The presence of humic acid in water raises serious concerns due to its toxicity and ability to form carcinogenic trihalomethanes. Adsorption was shown to be an effective method for the removal of humic acid from various wastewater sources. Many adsorbents were feasible and effective for removing HA from wastewater, including carbon-based and activated carbons, clay-based adsorbents, zeolites, iron-based/magnetic adsorbents, functionalized adsorbents, and natural adsorbents. The removal of humic acid from water using different types of adsorbents was presented and reviewed and the effect of changing operational parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial HA concentration, temperature, and ionic strength on humic acid adsorption performance was evaluated. According to the review, the nano-MgO adsorbent performed the best in humic acid removal capacity, while MAER-3 resin performed the most regeneration cycles. Nano-MgO was the most promising adsorbent in capacity and regeneration capabilities, with an adsorption capacity of 1260 mg/g and ten regeneration cycles. Future research should focus on continuous adsorption processes in order to scale-up and use on an industrial level, as well as using actual wastewater rather than synthesized wastewater for adsorption experiments, as well as cost analysis to determine the feasibility of scaling up on an industrial level.
