Abstract:In this paper, the effect of slip velocity on the rotating electro-osmotic flow (EOF) of the power-law fluid in a non-uniform microchannel under high zeta potential is investigated. The potential distribution of the electric double layer is obtained by using the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation. By using the finite difference method, the numerical solution of the rotating EOF velocity profile is obtained. The effectiveness and correctness of the present numerical method is proven by comparing the results with the analytical solutions of the Newtonian fluid given by a previous study. The influences of the fluid behavior index n and the slip parameter beta on the velocity profiles are also discussed in detail.

Abstract:The electroosmotic flow induced by an applied potential through microchannels between two parallel plates is analyzed in this study. A 2D Poisson-Boltzmann equation is used to model the electrical double layer (EDL), and the 2D modified Navier-Stokes equation which includes the body force caused by the interaction between the charge density and the applied electrical potential field is also used. These coupled equations are numerically solved with a finite difference method. The detailed results indicate that, in general, the essence of the zeta potential effect on the feature of EOF is significant and clear. The traits of electroosmotic flow with uniform, step change, especially linear variable zeta potential are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, a rotating electro-osmotic flow of a fractional Maxwell fluid in a parallel plate microchannel with high zeta potentials is examined. The Navier’s slip law at walls is considered. The electric double layer potential distribution is derived by using the nonlinear Poisson–Boltzmann equation. Based on the L1 approximation of the Caputo derivative, a Crank–Nicolson numerical scheme is developed for obtaining the numerical solutions of the rotating electro-osmotic flow velocity profiles. With a purpose to verify the correctness of our numerical results, a comparison has been made with the analytical solutions of the Newtonian fluid given by the previous work and the excellent agreement between the solutions is clear. Finally, the influences of the fractional parameters of α and β, the slip length d and the wall zeta potential ζ on the velocity distribution are also discussed in detail.

Abstract:Electroosmotic flow (EOF) is one of the most important techniques in a microfluidic system. Many microfluidic devices are made from a combination of different materials, and thus asymmetric electrochemical boundary conditions should be applied for the reasonable analysis of the EOF. In this study, the EOF of power-law fluids in a slit microchannel with different zeta potentials at the top and bottom walls are studied analytically. The flow is assumed to be steady, fully developed, and unidirectional with no applied pressure. The continuity equation, the Cauchy momentum equation, and the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation are solved for the velocity field. The exact solutions of the velocity distribution are obtained in terms of the Appell’s first hypergeometric functions. The velocity distributions are investigated and discussed as a function of the fluid behavior index, Debye length, and the difference in the zeta potential between the top and bottom.

Abstract:To simulate the mass separation or mixture for chemical or biological fluids with viscoelastic characteristics, the rotating electroosmotic flow (EOF) of two-layer fluid in a microchannel with parallel plates is studied. This system is composed of Newtonian fluid and Caputo fractional Oldroyd-B fluid. Maxwell stress is introduced to describe the interaction of two fluids at the interface as well as the shear stress. Based on L 1 approximation, numerical solutions are obtained by the finite difference method. The results show that mainstream velocity will oscillate first and then reach a stable state as there is enough time. Due to the existence of centrifugal force, mainstream velocity will increase with the increasing rotating angular velocity. Furthermore, the minimum value of velocity does not lie at the middle of channel because of viscoelastic effects, and the position where reverse flow appears also is pushed to the right side of the center when the rotating angular velocity is large enough. Moreover, with the increase of the interfacial zeta potential difference, the velocity distributions of two-layer fluid have different trends.

Abstract:In this paper, an investigation of the electroosmotic flow of fractional Oldroyd-B fluids in a narrow circular tube with high zeta potential is presented. The Navier linear slip law at the walls is considered. The potential field is applied along the walls described by the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation. It's worth noting here that the linear Debye-Hückel approximation can't be used at the condition of high zeta potential and the exact solution of potential in cylindrical coordinates can't be obtained. Therefore, the Matlab bvp4c solver method and the finite difference method are employed to numerically solve the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation and the governing equations of the velocity distribution, respectively. To verify the validity of our numerical approach, a comparison has been made with the previous work in the case of low zeta potential and the excellent agreement between the solutions is clear. Then, in view of the obtained numerical solution for the velocity distribution, the numerical solutions of the flow rate and the shear stress are derived. Furthermore, based on numerical analysis, the influence of pertinent parameters on the potential distribution and the generation of flow is presented graphically.

Abstract:In this study,semi-analytical solutions are presented for the time periodic electroosmotic flow(EOF) of linear viscoelastic fluids between micro-parallel plates.The linear viscoelastic fluids used here are described by the general Maxwell model.The solution involves analytically solving the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann(P-B) equation,the Cauchy momentum equation and the general Maxwell constitutive equation.By numerical computations,the influences of the dimensionless wall Zeta potentialΨ_0 the periodic EOF electric oscillating Reynolds number Re,and normalized relaxation timesλ_1ωon velocity profiles are presented.Results show that for prescribed electrokinetic width K,relaxation timeλ_1ωand oscillating Reynolds number Re,higher Zeta potentialΨ_0 will lead to larger amplitude of EOF velocity,and the variation of velocity is restricted to a very narrow region close to the electric double-layer(EDL). In addition,with the increase of relaxation timeλ_1ω,the elasticity of the fluid becomes conspicuous and the velocity variations can be expanded to the whole flow field.For prescribed Re,longer relaxation timeλ_1ωwill lead to quick change of the EOF velocity profile, and the amplitude becomes larger gradually.

Abstract:Using the method of Laplace transform, an analytical solution of unsteady rotating electroosmotic flow (EOF) through a parallel plate microchannel is presented. The analysis is based upon the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation describing electrical potential distribution and the Navies Stokes equation representing flow field in the rotating coordinate system. The discrepancy of present problem from classical EOF is that the velocity fields are two-dimensional. The rotating EOF velocity profile and flow rate greatly depend on time t, rotating parameter ω and the electrokinetic width K (ratio of half height of microchannel to thickness of electric double layer). The influence of the above dimensionless parameters on transient EOF velocity, volume flow rate and EO spiral is investigated.

Abstract:The Navier-Stokes equation was used to describe the characteristics of electro-osmotic flow. The corresponding numerical simulations were performed for varying zeta-potential and dimension. The results indicated that a step change in zeta-potential will cause a significant variation in the velocity profile and pressure distribution of the flow. A step change both in zeta-potential and dimension will result in a more violent variation near the joint of the capillary. This variation will reduce the separation efficiency and quality of capillary electrophoresis. The conclusions are helpful to design and fabrication of microfluidic devices, the analysis of data collected from such devices and improvement of the separation efficiency of capillary electrophoresis.

Abstract:In this study, rotating electromagnetohydrodynamic (EMHD) flow of power-law fluid through a narrow microchannel is investigated. The flow is actuated by the Coriolis force raised from the rotation of the microchannel and the Lorentz force induced by the interaction between electric and magnetic fields. The modified Navier-Stokes equations in the rotating frame are discretized by the finite difference method and solved through Crank-Nicolson implicit scheme under the appropriate initial and boundary conditions. Results of the present analysis are compared with existing literature for special case when the behavior index n of power-law fluid is equal to unit (Newtonian fluid). Very well agreements are obtained and the validity of the present numerical method is confirmed. The influences of the fluid behavior index n, the Hartmann number Ha and rotating Reynolds number ReΩ on the EMHD velocity distributions are discussed. The results show the velocity of the power-law fluid depends strongly on these flow parameters. Due to the existence of the uniform electric and magnetic fields, the critical Hartmann number can also be obtained for the power-law fluid. In addition, for the small Ha, a depression only appears in mainflow direction at the central part of the microchannel and the dilatant fluid (n > 1) is easily affected by the rotation effect comparing to the pseudoplastic fluid (n < 1). Regarding the evolution of centerline velocity of the power-law fluids with ReΩ, an auspicious phenomenon is that there exists a cross-over point for different values of the behavior index n. The present results can be utilized as an initial blue-print for the developing exquisite and efficient electromagnetic devices for applications involving flow control or species separation.

Abstract:In this study, rotating electroosmotic flow of two immiscible fluids in a microparallel channel is investigated. The electric double layer (EDL) potential distribution is considered by using linear Poisson-Boltzmann (P-B) equation. Based upon the analytical charge density distribution, an analytical solution of flow velocity can be obtained by solving the modified Navier-Stokes (N-S) equation in the rotating frame. Besides, the equilibrium condition of stress, including shear stress and Maxwell stress, is taken into account as boundary conditions at the interface to analyze the distribution of the two-layer fluids velocity. It is found that, due to the rotational effect of the microchannel, the Coriolis force can generate a (secondary) transverse flow in horizontal direction perpendicular to the mainstream direction and the velocity amplitude of two-layer fluids has a reduced flow along the mainstream direction. In addition, the results indicate that double fluid velocity distribution is strongly influenced by several non-dimensional parameters, such as the dielectric constant ratio epsilon, density ratio rho, viscosity ratio mu of the two layer fluids, rotating angular velocity 6), interface zeta potential difference Delta phi*, interface charge density jump Q, the normalized thickness of two layer Newtonian fluids h*(1), h*(2) and electrokinetic width K-1, K-2. Smaller mu and larger epsilon, Delta phi* lead to larger velocity amplitude for lower fluid (noted as fluid II), but an opposite trend can be found for upper fluid (namely fluid I). The increase of Q or decrease of rho leads to the increases of velocity amplitude for both fluid I and fluid II. Furthermore, interestingly, we observe that the mainstream speed at the interface does not depend on the interface zeta potential difference Delta phi*, the dielectric constant ratio a and electrokinetic width K-2 of fluid II when the depths of h*(1) and h*(2) are identical. Abstract:We present a theoretical investigation of rotating electroosmotic flows (EOFs) in soft parallel plate microchannels. The soft microchannel, also called as the polyelectrolyte-grafted microchannel, is denoted as a rigid microchannel coated with a polyelectrolyte layer (PEL) on its surface. We compare the velocity in a soft microchannel with that in a rigid one for different rotating frequencies and find that the PEL has a trend to lower the velocities in both directions for a larger equivalent electrical double layer (EDL) thickness λFCL (λFCL = 0.3) and a smaller rotating frequency ω (ω < 5). However, for a larger rotating frequency ω (ω < 5), the main stream velocity u far away from the channel walls in a soft microchannel exceeds that in a rigid one. Inspired by the above results, we can control the EOF velocity in micro rotating systems by imparting PELs on the microchannel walls, which may be an interesting application in biomedical separation and chemical reaction.

Abstract:Two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) electroosmotic flow (EOF) in zeta potential patterned micro-parallel channels was studied. The flow was driven by the combination of the Lorentz force and the electric field force produced due to an externally imposed vertical magnetic field and two horizontal electric fields. The analytical solutions of stream function and velocity distribution were obtained under the condition of hydrodynamic slippage. The variations of velocities with related non-dimensional parameters, such as Hartmann number Ha,slip length B and electrokinetic width K were addressed in detail. Results show that, the patterned charged surfaces induce a vertical velocity component leading to the formation of the vortexes. Also, the magnitudes of velocities increase with slip length B and electrokinetic width K.Moreover, it is interesting to note that the magnitudes of velocities become small with the increasing value of Ha, unlike the situation where there exists a critical value of Ha in one-dimensional flow. The present theoretical results can be utilized to design efficient microfluidic devices.

Abstract:Electroosmotic flow of Power-law fluids over a surface with arbitrary zeta potentials is analyzed. The governing equations including the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation, the Cauchy momentum equation and the continuity equation are solved to seek exact solutions for the electroosmotic velocity, shear stress, and dynamic viscosity distributions inside the electric double layer. Specifically, an expression for the general Smoluchowski velocity is obtained for electroosmosis of Power-law fluids in a fashion similar to the classic Smoluchowski velocity for Newtonian fluids. The existing Smoluchowski slip velocities under two special cases, (i) for Newtonian fluids with arbitrary zeta potentials and (ii) for Power-law fluids with small zeta potentials, can be recovered from our derived formula. It is interesting to note that the general Smoluchowski velocity for non-Newtonian Power-law fluids is a nonlinear function of the electric field strength and surface zeta potentials; this is due to the coupling electrostatics and non-Newtonian fluid behavior, which is different from its counterpart for Newtonian fluids. This general Smoluchowski velocity is of practical significance in determining the flow rates in microfluidic devices involving non-Newtonian Power-law fluids.

Abstract:Using the method of separation of variables, semi-analytical solutions are presented for the time periodic EOF flow of linear viscoelastic fluids between micro-parallel plates. The linear viscoelastic fluids used here are described by the Jeffreys model. The solution involves solving the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) equation, together with the Cauchy momentum equation and the Jeffreys constitutive equation considering the depletion effect produced by the interaction between macro-molecules of the Jeffreys fluid and the channel surface. The overall flow is divided into depletion layer and bulk flow outside of depletion layer. The velocity expressions of these two layers were obtained, respectively. By numerical computations, the influence of oscillating Reynolds number, Re, normalized retardation time, lambda(2)omega, and normalized wall zeta potential, (psi) over bar (w), on velocity amplitude is presented. Results show that the magnitude of the velocity amplitude becomes smaller with the increase of retardation time for small and intermediate Re. For large Re, the velocity is almost unchanged near the EDL with retardation time. Moreover, high zeta potential results in larger the magnitude of EOF velocity no matter whether the Re is large or not, especially within the depletion layer. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. Abstract:Flow behavior of transient mixed electro-osmotic and pressure driven flows (EOF/PDF) through a microannulus is investigated based on a linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation and Navier-Stokes equation. A semi-analytical solution of EOF velocity distribution as functions of relevant parameters is derived by Laplace transform method. By numerical computations of inverse Laplace transform, the effects of inner to outer wall zeta potential β, the normalized pressure gradient Ω and the inner to outer radius ratio α on transient EOF velocity are presented.

Abstract:Due to evergrowing importance of understanding flow of bio-fluids in Lab-on-CD based systems, we investigate the flow behaviour of power-law fluids in the rotating electroosmotic flow through a polyelectrolyte grafted (soft) narrow channel. We use a in-house numerical code to solve the governing transport equations for the velocities and flow rates in a rotating channel subjected to an applied external electric field. We show the strong effect of polyelectrolyte layer on the flow behaviour and find an increase in flow rate as we increase the size of the polyelectrolyte layer. We also show that rheology strongly influences the interplay of the Coriolis forces due to rotation and electrical body force due to the applied electric field. We show that the velocities are generally higher for shear thinning fluids as compared to shear thickening fluids. We also show that presence of polymer brushes in the polyelectrolyte layer creates a drag on the fluid which reduces velocities. We also show that the flow rates are strongly altered by the effect of rotation and that shear thickening fluids have lower flow rates than shear thinning fluids. We believe that studying effect of fluid rheology becomes very important for designing soft channel based Lab-on-CD systems driven by electroosmotic forcing and dealing with rheologically complex bio-fluids such as blood, saliva or mucus.
