Abstract:Hydrophobic surfaces in pressure-driven flows induce electrokinetic flow retardation, where the slip length decreases due to the surface charge. In the current work, we investigate the thermal transport and fluid flow behavior of a pressure-driven flow of shear-thinning fluid with an electroviscous effect, accounting for the influence of surface charge on the slip. The electrical potential field induced in the electrical double layer (EDL), velocity, streaming potential, and temperature are obtained after solving the Poisson-Boltzmann equation, mass, momentum and energy conservation equations without invoking the Debye-Hückel linearization. Results are presented for a broad range of dimensionless parameters, such as surface charge-independent slip length, Debye-Hückel parameter, zeta potential, heat flux and flow consistency index ( n ). The flow velocity decreases after considering the effect of surface charge on slip and such decrement is more for lower values of n , higher magnitude of zeta potential and thicker EDL. Moreover, for lower values of n , the alteration of the Nusselt number with the surface charge is non-monotonic, whereas, it increases with the surface charge for higher values of n . Further, for lower values of n (1/3) , the Nusselt number enhances by the surface charge effect on the slip, whereas, for higher values of n (1/2) , the trend is the opposite. Also, there is a strong interplay of the rheology of the fluid and EDL thickness in dictating the variation of the Nusselt number.

Abstract:The use of hydrophobic surfaces in electrokinetic flows results in an intricate analysis due to the coupling of surface potential and interfacial slip which challenges their independent measurement. Thus, it becomes significant to consider the slip-dependent surface potential which can decouple the interfacial slip from the zeta potential. In this article, we develop an analytical model to investigate the heat transfer characteristics for combined electroosmotic and pressure-driven flow through a plane microchannel considering the slip-dependent zeta potential. We solve analytically the Poisson–Boltzmann (PB) equation, the mass, momentum and energy conservation equations for hydrodynamically and thermally fully developed flow with appropriate boundary conditions to obtain closed form expressions for the induced potential within the electrical double layer (EDL), the velocity and temperature profiles and the Nusselt number in terms of different physico-chemical parameters. The results reveal that interfacial slip-dependent surface potential has a strong influence on the thermal transport phenomenon along with other parameters, like Joule heating, applied pressure-gradient, electrokinetic parameter, slip length and viscous dissipation. The velocity in the core region is always under-predicted considering the slip-independent surface potential and the under-prediction is amplified for thinner EDL and pure electroosmotic flow. Beyond the critical values of the slip length, the consideration of the slip-independent surface potential in the paradigm of thermal transport dynamics for electrokinetic flows, over-predicts the Nusselt number and the over-prediction is amplified for thinner EDL. Moreover, a critical Brinkman number, Br k is also identified such that for Br Br k. The relative enhancement in Nusselt number due to the interfacial slip increases with the applied pressure-gradient and slip length at smaller values of Brinkman number. Furthermore, the sensitivity of Nusselt number on slip is highly dependent on the Debye parameter, Brinkman number and applied pressure-gradient.

Abstract:We investigate the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics for a combined electro-osmotic and pressure-driven flow of two immiscible fluids through a straight planar microchannel considering the interfacial wall slip and slip-dependent zeta potential with asymmetric wall heating. Closed-form expressions are derived for the electrical potential distribution induced in the electrical double layer (EDL), velocity, temperature, and Nusselt number of both the layers after analytically solving the Poisson–Boltzmann equation, the mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations along with suitable boundary conditions for a steady incompressible hydrodynamically and thermally fully developed flow. The results for both the layers are presented for a broad range of parameters, such as dielectric constant ratio, pressure gradient, interfacial zeta potential difference, Debye–Hückel parameter, slip length, Joule heating parameter, Brinkman number, and heat flux ratio. The flow velocity is found to attain a higher value after considering the slip effect on zeta potential for all the parameters and for both fluids, and the enhancement in the velocity is more for thinner EDL. The heat transfer characteristics for the two layers are different, where the absolute value of the Nusselt number with the slip effect on zeta potential is always higher than that for the no-slip case for the bottom layer. Contrarily, the absolute value of the Nusselt number shows an opposite trend for the upper layer. Critical values of Brinkman numbers are obtained for the bottom layer beyond which the Nusselt number is higher for thicker EDL.

Abstract:Abstract Investigating the flow behavior in microfluidic systems has become of interest due to the need for precise control of the mass and momentum transport in microfluidic devices. In multilayered-flows, precise control of the flow behavior requires a more thorough understanding as it depends on multiple parameters. The following paper proposes a microfluidic system consisting of an aqueous solution between a moving plate and a stationary wall, where the moving plate mimics a charged oil–water interface. Analytical expressions are derived by solving the nonlinear Poisson–Boltzmann equation along with the simplified Navier–Stokes equation to describe the electrokinetic effects on the shear-driven flow of the aqueous electrolyte solution. The Debye–Huckel approximation is not employed in the derivation extending its compatibility to high interfacial zeta potential. Additionally, a numerical model is developed to predict the streaming potential flow created due to the shear-driven motion of the charged upper wall along with its associated electric double layer effect. The model utilizes the extended Nernst–Planck equations instead of the linearized Poisson–Boltzmann equation to accurately predict the axial variation in ion concentration along the microchannel. Results show that the interfacial zeta potential of the moving interface greatly impacts the velocity profile of the flow and can reverse its overall direction. The numerical results are validated by the analytical expressions, where both models predicted that flow could reverse its overall direction when the interfacial zeta potential of the oil–water is above a certain threshold value. Finally, this paper describes the electroviscous effect as well as the transient development of electrokinetic effects within the microchannel.

Abstract:An analytical investigation is conducted to analyze the impact of magnetic field and hydrodynamic slippage on two-dimensional electro-osmotic Brinkman flow in a microchannel with cosine surface zeta potential. The Brinkman equation is utilized to govern the fluid flow within a fully saturated, homogeneous, and isotropic porous medium. We consider a very small magnetic Reynolds number to eliminate the induced magnetic field equation. The Navier slip boundary condition is applied to assess the impact of hydrodynamic slippage. We utilize the Debye–Huckel length approximation to linearize the Poisson–Boltzmann equation, which governs the potential of the electrical double layer. The stream function is obtained analytically, and contour plots, velocity fields, shear stresses, and pressure gradients are assessed to gain a proper understanding of flow physics. We utilize the stream function to plot the streamline plots for distinct assumed flow parameters. We observed that for a fixed Darcy number, the intensity of flow vortices decreases with increasing Hartman number while increasing with increasing slip length. Further, altering the wave number in the assumed cosine-waved zeta potential causes asymmetrical recirculations in the flow, which helps in increasing the scalar mixing process in microdevices. Further, the proposed investigation has various crucial applications, such as microfluidic cooling systems, drug delivery systems, and so on.

Abstract:We investigate the electroosmotic mixing characteristics for flow through a hydrophobic microchannel with interfacial slip dependent heterogeneous surface charge. A comprehensive theoretical framework is developed to solve the Poisson–Boltzmann equation for the induced potential within the electrical double layer, mass and momentum conservation equations for fluid flow, and species transport equation with appropriate boundary conditions. We identify two different flow regimes based on diffusive Peclet number such that in the first regime the value of mixing efficiency is almost 100% as the recirculation zones formed due to the non-uniform surface potential provide sufficient convection mixing and the flow rate enhances with the slip length. The critical value of Peclet number increases with both the slip length and Debye parameter. In the next regime the effect of interfacial slip is significant in altering the mixing performance and the mixing efficiency decreases both with the slip and Debye parameter. The patch surface potential modulates the flow rate and mixing performance and, in this context, different range of patch surface potential for the considered physicochemical parameters is identified for which both the flow rate and mixing efficiency enhances due to the interfacial slip.

Abstract:The Navier-Stokes equation was used to describe the characteristics of electro-osmotic flow. The corresponding numerical simulations were performed for varying zeta-potential and dimension. The results indicated that a step change in zeta-potential will cause a significant variation in the velocity profile and pressure distribution of the flow. A step change both in zeta-potential and dimension will result in a more violent variation near the joint of the capillary. This variation will reduce the separation efficiency and quality of capillary electrophoresis. The conclusions are helpful to design and fabrication of microfluidic devices, the analysis of data collected from such devices and improvement of the separation efficiency of capillary electrophoresis.
Charge-dependent slip flow of ionic liquids through the non-uniform microfluidic device: pressure drop and electroviscous effects

Abstract:This work investigates electroviscous effects in presence of charge-dependent slip in steady pressure-driven laminar flow of a symmetric (1:1) electrolyte liquid through a uniformly charged slit contraction - expansion (4:1:4) microfluidic device. The mathematical model comprising Poisson's, Nernst-Planck, Navier-Stokes, and current continuity equations are solved numerically using finite element method (FEM). The flow fields (electrical potential, charge, induced electric field strength, pressure drop, and electroviscous correction factor) have been obtained and presented for a wide range of parameters like inverse Debye length (K=2-20), surface charge density (S=4-16) and slip length ($0\le B_0\le 0.20$) at fixed Schmidt number (Sc=1000) and low Reynolds number (Re=0.01). The flow fields have shown complex dependence on governing parameters. The charge-dependent slip has further enhanced complexity of dependency in comparison to no-slip condition. The total electrical potential ($|\Delta U|$) maximally increases by 78.68%, and pressure drop ($|\Delta P|$) maximally decreases by 63.42%, relative to no-slip flow, over the ranges of conditions. The electroviscous correction factor ($Y=$ ratio of apparent to physical viscosity) increases by 33.58% under the no-slip ($B_0=0$) condition. It ($Y$) increases maximally by 72.10% for charge-dependent slip than in no-slip flow for considered ranges of the conditions. A simple analytical model to estimate the pressure drop in the electroviscous flow has been developed based on the Poiseuille flow in individual uniform sections and pressure loss due to thin orifice. The model overpredicts pressure drop by 2 - 4% from the numerical values. Finally, the predictive relations, depicting the functional dependence of numerical results on governing parameters, are presented for their practical use in design and engineering of microfluidic devices.

Abstract:This study has numerically investigated the charge-heterogeneity effects in the electroviscous flow of symmetric ($1$:$1$) electrolyte liquid through a uniform slit microfluidic device. The Poisson's, Nernst-Planck (N-P), Navier-Stokes (N-S), and continuity equations are solved using the finite element method (FEM) to obtain the flow fields, such as total electrical potential ($U$), excess charge ($n^\ast$), induced electric field strength ($E_\text{x}$), and pressure ($P$) fields for following conditions: inverse Debye length ($2\le K\le 20$), surface charge density ($4\le \mathit{S_\text{1}}\le 16$), and surface charge-heterogeneity ratio ($0\le \mathit{S_\text{rh}}\le 2$). Results have shown that the total potential ($|\Delta U|$) and pressure ($|\Delta P|$) drop maximally increase by 99.09% (at $K=20$, $\mathit{S_\text{1}}=4$) and 12.77% (at $K=2$, $\mathit{S_\text{1}}=8$), respectively with overall charge-heterogeneity ($0\le \mathit{S_\text{rh}}\le 2$). Electroviscous correction factor (i.e., the ratio of effective to physical viscosity) maximally enhances by 12.77% (at $K=2$, $\mathit{S_\text{1}}=8$), 40.98% (at $\mathit{S_\text{1}}=16$, $\mathit{S_\text{rh}}=1.50$), and 41.35% (at $K=2$, $\mathit{S_\text{rh}}=1.50$), with the variation of $\mathit{S_\text{rh}}$ (from 0 to 2), $K$ (from 20 to 2), and $\mathit{S_\text{1}}$ (from 0 to 16), respectively. Further, a simple pseudo-analytical model is developed to estimate the pressure drop in the electroviscous (EV) flow, accounting for the influence of charge-heterogeneity based on the Poiseuille flow in the uniform channel. This model predicts the pressure drop $\pm$2-4% within the numerical results. The robustness and simplicity of this model enable the present numerical results for engineering and design aspects of microfluidic applications.

Abstract:The electroviscous effect and convective heat transfer of pressure-driven flow in micro/nanochannels have been widely studied in the past decade. However, previous studies often used constant physical parameters in calculations and overlooked the situation of probable overlapping electric double layers (EDL). In this work, we report the combined effect of concentration-dependent surface charge and surface charge-dependent boundary slip on the flow and related heat transfer in nanochannels with overlapping EDL. The results show that the solution concentration-dependent surface charge and boundary slip apparently affect the electric conductivity and velocity distribution in the nanochannel, subsequently affect the fluidic behavior and heat transfer. The dimensionless flow rate and the Nusselt number (Nu) decrease first and then increase with the increasing solution concentration. Besides, the slip significantly improves the dimensionless flow rate and Nu, especially in small nanochannels with thick overlapping EDL. These results provide useful guidelines for the design and performance optimization of micro/nano fluidic devices.

LATTICE BOLTZMANN SIMULATION OF ELECTROOSMOTIC FLOWS IN MICROCHANNEL WITH A SUDDEN EXPANSION

Abstract:Great progress has been carried out on the Micro Total Analysis System (μTAS) in recent years, in which the chemical analysis system is miniaturized by micromachining. This system can reduce reagent consumption, dispersion effects and analysis time. Nowadays, μTAS devices are beginning to make significant contributions to biotechnology, biomedicine and drug discovery. Meanwhile, due to the difficulties of controlling fluid motion in such a small scale, fluid flow driven in microfluidic devices has received increasing attention. So far electroosmotic flow (EOF) is one of the most popular and important fluid driven techniques in microfluidic devices because in an EOF the velocity profile is plug-like and the mean velocity is independent of the cross-sectional area, as well as its valveless control of fluid flow. Therefore, electro-osmotic flow can offer significantly less deleterious dispersive effects than pressure-driven flow and provide a favored high-performance sample separation technique. Due to its importance, electroosmotic flow in microchannels has received considerable attentions recently and been investigated both numerically and experimentally. However, fluid flow in microfluidic devices is often through channels with changes in cross-sectional area, and/or channels with bends and bifurcations, which make a great difference to velocity profile, pressure distribution and so on. A systematic study of these different configurations will provide valuable insight into the flow physics. The goal of the present study is to undertake a numerical study of EOF in microchannels with a sudden expansion in order to identify the factors affecting the flow. The present work is in the use of an incompressible lattice-Boltzmann model with a forcing term which is perhaps better suited to microflows than the conventional Navier-Stokes solvers. The impact of expansion ratio (ER), ionic molar concentration (c ∞), external electric potential and zeta potential on the flows are investigated. Numerical results including velocity profile, pressure distribution and external electrical potential distribution have been presented. It has been shown that boundary layer separation has been suppressed by the electroosmotic force exerted on the fluid near walls. Moreover, a sudden change in the channel has a great influence on the electroosmotic flows. A jump has been found in fluid velocity, pressure drop at the junction, as well as electrical potential due to EDL. The external electrical potential is linear along the axis of the channel but a turning point emerges at the junction. Non-linear pressure drop in the narrow channel becomes more obvious as ER increases. Results also show that velocity profile at the outlet depends on ER and c ∞. The convex velocity profile turns to concave one as ER or c ∞ increases, resulted from interactions between adverse pressure gradient and electric force exerted on the fluid in the middle of channel.
Analysis of electroviscous effects in electrolyte liquid flow through heterogeneously charged uniform microfluidic device

Abstract:Charge-heterogeneity (i.e., surface charge variation in the axial direction of device) introduces non-uniformity in flow characteristics in the microfluidic device. Thus, it can be used to control practical microfluidic applications, such as mixing, mass, and heat transfer processes. This study has numerically investigated the charge-heterogeneity effects in the electroviscous (EV) flow of symmetric ( : ) electrolyte liquid through a uniform slit microfluidic device. The Poisson's, Nernst-Planck (N-P), Navier-Stokes (N-S), and continuity equations are numerically solved using the finite element method (FEM) to obtain the flow fields, such as total electrical potential (U), excess charge (n*), induced electric field strength (Ex), and pressure ( ) fields for following ranges of governing parameters: inverse Debye length (K = 2 - 20), surface charge density (S1 = 4 - 16), and surface charge-heterogeneity ratio (Srh = 0 - 2). Results have shown that the total potential ( ) and pressure ( ) drop maximally increase by 99.09% (from 0.1413 to 0.2812) (at K=20, S1=4) and 12.77% (from 5.4132 to 6.1045) (at K=2, S1=8), respectively with overall charge-heterogeneity (Srh = 0 - 2). Electroviscous correction factor (Y, i.e., ratio of effective to physical viscosity) maximally enhances by 12.77% (from 1.2040 to 1.3577) (at K=2, S1=8), 40.98% (from 1.4135 to 1.0026) (at S1=16, Srh=1.50), and 41.35% (from 1 to 1.4135) (at K=2, Srh=1.50), with the variation of Srh (from 0 to 2), K (from 20 to 2), and S1 (from 0 to 16), respectively. Further, a simple pseudo-analytical model is developed to estimate the pressure drop in EV flow, accounting for the influence of charge-heterogeneity based on the Poiseuille flow in a uniform channel. This model predicts the pressure drop 2--4% within the numerical results. Abstract:A theoretical investigation is performed into the electroviscous-induced retardation of liquid flows through finitely long nanochannels or nanotubes with large wells at either end. Given the assumption of equilibrium conditions between the ionic solution in the wells and that within the nanochannel or nanotube, an exact solution is derived for the overlapped electrical double layer (EDL) for the case where the concentrations of the positive and negative ions in the wells may be unequal. The ion concentrations in the wells are determined by the conditions of global electroneutrality and mass conservation. It is shown that the overlapped EDL model proposed by Baldessari and Santiago [J. Colloid Interface Sci. 325, 526 (2008)] is in fact the same as the "thick EDL model" (i.e., the traditional Poisson-Boltzmann model) when the positive and negative ion concentrations in the large enough wells are both equal to the bulk concentration of the salt solution. Utilizing the proposed overlapped EDL analytical model, an investigation is performed to evaluate the effects of hydrodynamic slippage on the flow retardation caused by electroviscosity in nanochannels or nanotubes. Furthermore, exact and approximate solutions are derived for the electroviscosity in ion-selective nanochannels and nanotubes. It is shown that in the absence of slip, the maximum electroviscosity in nanochannels and nanotubes containing a unipolar solution of simple monovalent counter-ions occurs at surface charge densities of h vertical bar sigma vertical bar = 0.32 nm x C/m2 and a vertical bar sigma vertical bar approximate to 0.4 nm x C/m(2), respectively. In addition, it is shown that the electroviscosity in a nanotube is smaller than that in a nanochannel. For example, given a LiCl solution, the maximum electroviscosites in a non-slip nanochannel and non-slip nanotube are eta(a)/eta approximate to 1.6 and 1.47, respectively. For both nanospaces, the electroviscosity is greatly increased when the liquid slip effect is taken into account. Significantly, under slip conditions, the electroviscosity in the nanotube is greater than that in the nanochannel. Finally, an investigation is performed into the effects of ambient atmospheric CO2 dissolution on the electroviscosities of salt/buffer solution and deionized (DI) water in silica nanochannels. The results show that the electroviscosity of CO2-saturated DI water (pH = 5.6) can be reasonably neglected in silica nanochannels with a height of less than 100 nm. However, for thick overlapping electric double layer (EDL) nanochannels, the channel height size effect on surface charge cannot be neglected. In this work, we consider the channel height size effect on surface charge to investigate the related ions transport, fluidic flow and heat transfer in nanochannels. The corresponding results show that the deviation considering the height effect or not is significant, especially in the situation of boundary slip. The relative errors of local ionic concentration and potential can reach 50% and 8%, respectively. The maximum relative errors of induced electrical field strength and the ratio of apparent viscosity to fluidic viscosity reach 10% and 9%, respectively, indicating strong height size effect on the fluidic flow. The deviation of Nu is relatively small and almost not affected by the surface charge. These deviations will decrease to zero when the channel height is large enough or the solution concentration is high enough to reach a non-overlapping EDL situation. The results of this work are meaningful to further understand the electroviscous effect in nanochannels, which may provide useful guidelines for the design and performance optimization of nanofluidic devices.

Abstract:We investigate the electroosmotic flow of a quasi-linear viscoelastic fluid over a surface having charge modulation in narrow confinements. We obtain analytical solutions using a combination of regular and matched asymptotic expansions in order to describe the viscoelastic flow field and apparent slip velocity besides pinpointing variations of the flow rate and ionic currents due to the surface charge modulation. We demonstrate excellent agreement between the asymptotic analytical solution for the flow field and the full numerical solution in the limiting condition of a thin electrical double layer and weakly viscoelastic fluid. For a wide range of flow governing parameters, we analyze the flow velocity, vortex dynamics, flow rates, and streaming current. We demonstrate that the magnitude of the observed electroosmotic slip velocity is more sensitive to the thickness of the electrical double layer rather than the viscoelasticity of the fluid. We have observed that the contribution of fluid elasticity is prominent in breaking the axial symmetry in the electroosmotic flow with the presence of periodic charge distributions, which is in contrast to the symmetric electroosmotic flow field of a Newtonian fluid over the same charge modulated walls. The results hold the key toward understanding the flow of biological fluids in microfluidic flows by leveraging electrokinetic transport over charge modulated surfaces. We believe that the results of net throughput, streaming current, and vortex dynamics will aid our understanding of the complex fluid behavior and microfluidic mixers.

Abstract:In this paper, the effect of slip velocity on the rotating electro-osmotic flow (EOF) of the power-law fluid in a non-uniform microchannel under high zeta potential is investigated. The potential distribution of the electric double layer is obtained by using the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation. By using the finite difference method, the numerical solution of the rotating EOF velocity profile is obtained. The effectiveness and correctness of the present numerical method is proven by comparing the results with the analytical solutions of the Newtonian fluid given by a previous study. The influences of the fluid behavior index n and the slip parameter beta on the velocity profiles are also discussed in detail.

Abstract:We analytically investigated the electroosmotic flow characteristics of complex viscoelastic liquids within a charged hydrophobic microchannel, considering the pH and salt concentration-dependent surface charge effects in our analysis. We examined the variation of the electric-double layer (EDL) potential field, the surface charge-dependent slip (SCDS) length, the flow field, the viscosity ratio, and both normal and shear stresses in relation to the bulk pH, bulk salt concentration, and Deborah number of the solution. Our current findings indicate that, under strong flow resistance due to increased electrical attraction on counter ions, a highly basic solution with a high EDL potential magnitude results in a significant decrease in the slip length. Neglecting the effect of SCDS leads to an overestimation of flow velocity, with this overprediction being more pronounced for highly basic solutions. This overestimation diminishes as bulk salt concentration increases, particularly when compared to strongly acidic solutions. Furthermore, a noticeable increase in average velocity is observed as the Deborah number rises for highly basic solutions compared to highly acidic ones. This is attributed to the substantial reduction in apparent viscosity caused by the shear-thinning nature of the liquid at higher shear rates, supported by a larger zeta potential modulated strong electrical force for basic solutions. Additionally, we found that the intensity of shear and normal stresses tends to increase with bulk pH, primarily due to the rise in electric body force at higher zeta potential. These results can potentially inform the design and development of a compact, nonmoving electroosmotic pump for transporting biological species with varying physiological properties, such as solution pH. This technology could be applied in subsequent processes involving mixing, separation, flow-focusing for cell sorting, and other related applications.

Abstract:In computational models of microchannel flows, the Helmholtz-Smoluchowski slip velocity boundary condition is often used because it approximates the motion of the electric double layer without resolving the charge density profiles close to the walls while drastically reducing the computational effort needed for the flow model to be solved. Despite working well for straight channel flow of Newtonian fluids, the approximation does not work well for flow involving complex fluids and spatially varying surface potential distribution. To treat these effects using the slip velocity boundary condition, it is necessary to understand how the surface potential and fluid properties affect the slip velocity. The present analysis shows the existence of a modified electroosmotic slip velocity for viscoelastic fluids, which is strongly dependent upon Deborah number and viscosity ratio, and this modification differs significantly from the slip velocity of Newtonian fluids. An augmentation of fluid elasticity results in an asymmetric distribution of slip velocity. Nonintuitively, the modulation wavelength of the imposed surface potential contributes to changing the slip velocity magnitude and adding periodicity to the solution. The proposed electroosmotic slip velocity for viscoelastic fluid can be used in computational models of microchannel flows to approximate the motion of the electric double layer without resolving the charge density profiles close to the walls.

Abstract:This study investigates the effects of slip boundary conditions on the electroosmotic flow of an electrolyte solution in a microchannel with a squeezing upper wall and a charged lower wall. The mathematical model is derived by utilizing a tight coupling between the nonlinear Poisson–Boltzmann equation and the flow Navier–Stokes equations. An analytical solution to the problem is acquired through the application of lubrication theory, enabling the resolution of the Poisson–Boltzmann equation without resorting to any approximation techniques. The study thoroughly investigates the impact of various electrokinetic parameters, including the Helmholtz–Smoluchowski velocity, wall zeta potential, Debye length, and electric field, on fluid shear stress, pressure distributions, velocity field, and net flow rate. The results demonstrate that the time-averaged net flow rate is significantly influenced by the collective impact of wall slip velocity, Helmholtz–Smoluchowski velocity, zeta potential, and electric double layer. The data clearly show that altering the Helmholtz–Smoluchowski velocity direction can also impact the direction of the net flow rate, regardless of the slip effects. These results further confirm that applying slip boundary conditions to both walls can improve pumping efficiency.
