Abstract:12,18Cr-oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steels were irradiated at room temperature by single beam (2.2 MeV He+ or 3.0 MeV H+ or 21.0 MeV Si4+), dual-ion-beam (2.2 MeV He+ and 3.0 MeV H+) and triple-ion-beam (21.0 MeV Si4+, 2.2 MeV He+ and 3.0 MeV H+). Five combination of H, He, He+H, Si, Si+He+H irradiation were used. The mechanical properties of 12,18Cr-ODS steels exhibited that triple-ion-beam irradiation could strengthen irradiation swelling and hardening effect. Carbon segregation and several new carbon peaks appeared in the Raman spectrum of irradiated 12Cr-ODS steel. Deterioration of irradiation resistance of ODS-F/M steel under high concentration of helium

Abstract:Simultaneous Fe+He ion irradiations of China Low Activation Martensitic (CLAM) steel and oxide-dispersion-strengthened ferritic/martensitic (ODS-F/M) steel were carried out at 350 °C-550 °C to the damage dose of 11 dpa with different He concentrations to investigate the effect of oxide particles on the evolution of He bubbles and dislocation loops. The microstructures of all irradiated samples were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The average size of oxide particles decreased and the density increased after irradiation. The aggregation of He bubbles was observed at the edge of oxide particles. As the He concentration increased, the aggregation of helium bubbles appeared at the edge of more oxide particles. Furthermore, He bubbles were not observed inside ODS-F/M steel grains or at grain boundaries, which suggests that the oxide particle interface is more capable of capturing helium atoms than other sinks. The average dislocation loop size of ODS-F/M steels is only 58 % of that in CLAM steel at 450 °C, showing that ODS-F/M steel has excellent inhibition on the growth of dislocation loops. Nevertheless, with the increase of temperature and He concentration, the number density and size of dislocation loops in ODS-F/M steels gradually approach those in CLAM steels. The ability of ODS-F/M steels to inhibit irradiation hardening relative to CLAM steels increases with increasing temperature and decreases with increasing He concentration. The result of first-principles calculations shows that the formation energy of interstitial Fe atom at the interface increases with the increasing of the number of He atoms, which means that the aggregation of excessive He atoms at the interface will inhibit superior irradiation resistance of ODS-F/M steel.

Abstract:To simulate and investigate the irradiation damage of neutron and transmutation effect (He production) on the hydrogen isotope trapping behavior, in the present study, a new monoclinic hydrogen permeation barrier composed of Cr2O3 was fabricated and helium implantation with different fluences was tentatively employed. First, pure chromium samples were oxidized in an ultra-low oxygen partial pressure (1.7 x 10(-23) Pa) environment to obtain a single Cr2O3 layer. Then a dense layer of helium bubbles was formed in a substrate using a helium ion implantation method. Finally, the samples were treated in a hydrogen plasma environment at 500 degrees C. The damage, vacancy, and helium distribution in these samples were then simulated by SRIM. The morphology, phase, surface characteristics, thermal desorption, and electrochemical properties were subsequently characterized and evaluated. Thermal desorption spectrum analysis (TDS) was used to study the thermal desorption of hydrogen and helium at different temperatures. Our results showed that the inhibitory effect of the composite hydrogen barrier layer on the hydrogen diffusion in the substrate first increased and then decreased with the increase of the helium ion implantation fluence. In-situ Study of Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of GH3536 Alloy Manufactured by Selective Laser Melting at 750 °C

Abstract:Nickel-based GH3536 alloy exhibits high strength but low ductility when produced by selective laser melting (SLM), which hinders its widespread application in aerospace. This paper employed a 'two-step ' method of heat treatment to optimize the microstructure of the SLM GH3536 alloy and investigated the mechanical properties. Tensile tests were conducted on SLM GH3536 alloy before and after heat treatment at 750 degrees C, using an in -situ high-temperature tensile stage. The relationship between the microstructural evolution and deformation behavior of the alloys was investigated by combining the in -situ tensile experiments and crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM). The results suggested that the elongation can be increased by 80% without a significant reduction in tensile strength. The improved elongation is attributed to the complete recrystallization, formation of annealed twins and serrated grain boundaries after heat treatment. The study also investigated the deformation behavior and fracture mode of the alloy before and after heat treatment. Discussion was done on the influence of the microstructure, particularly the twin and serrated grain boundaries on the alloy ' s plastic deformation. This study enhanced the understanding of plastic deformation of SLM GH3536 alloy and provided a valuable reference for the design and post-treatment of superalloy.

Abstract:The China Low Activation Martensitic (CLAM) steel was irradiated by high energy helium ions under different ion doses, the microstructure evolution was studied by using a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS) mapping. The mechanical response of this material before and after irradiation was investigated under micropillar compression test. The results indicate that radiation leads to Cr segregation at the grain boundary and facilitates the growth of M23C6 precipitate. The pillar compression demonstrate that the strength of the CLAM steel increased due to irradiation-induced defects strengthening. The deformed micropillar is analyzed by TEM observation, indicating the cracks nucleated around the M23C6 precipitate. Furthermore, the effect of the M23C6 on mechanical behavior is discussed.
Significant suppression of helium bubbles in oxide dispersion strengthened FeCrAl alloys irradiated by high concentration of helium

Abstract:Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) FeCrAl alloys were successfully fabricated by various mechanical alloying time (10h and 40h), combined with spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. To understand their helium irradiation resistance, two kinds of ODS FeCrAl alloys were implanted with helium ions at 400 keV in the fluence of 1 × 10 21 /m 2 at 350 °C, 400 °C, and 450 °C to investigate the effect of high concentration helium on the materials in advanced nuclear reactors. The distributions of helium bubbles associated with the microstructural features were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM). The experimental results showed that both the helium bubble sizes and volume fractions increased with increasing the irradiation temperatures. The high sink strength of nano-oxides and small inter-oxides distance contributed to the good suppression of helium bubbles growth. In particular, we identified that the high-density nano-oxides with the small sizes (<10 nm) could sequester the helium into several (1–3) tiny bubbles to inhibit bubbles accumulating and coarsening both in elevated temperatures and high helium concentration. Additionally, grain boundaries demonstrated the weaker ability than nano-oxides to disperse helium bubbles, when compared helium irradiation resistance in ODS FeCrAl alloys and FeCrAl alloys. Eventually, ODS FeCrAl alloys in this study revealed the superior helium irradiation resistance than other studied alloys, making it promising to be one of the potential structural materials applicated in advanced nuclear reactors.

Abstract:The influence of rapid thermal annealing (RTA) on the formation of oxygen precipitates and extended defects has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in heavily and lightly boron-doped Czochralski (Cz) silicon, respectively. It reveals that for the heavily doped specimen undergo RTA pre-annealing, there are oxygen precipitates with high density generated, accompanied with the stacking faults, while for the specimen without RTA pre-annealing, dislocation generated; as for the lightly doped specimen, it found that there are dislocations generated in the specimen undergo RTA pre-annealing, while oxygen precipitate-related dislocations generated in the specimen without RTA pre-annealing, respectively. The main reason is due to the enhancement of oxygen precipitation by heavy boron doping and the increment of vacancy concentration in the bulk injected into the bulk by RTA pre-annealing.
Helium self-trapping and diffusion behaviors in deformed 316L stainless steel exposed to high flux and low energy helium plasma

Abstract:A large number of dislocation networks were introduced in to 316L stainless steel by cold rolling. Subsequently, low energy (40 eV) helium ions were implanted by exposing the steel to helium plasma. Thermal desorption and positron annihilation spectroscopy were used to study the behavior of helium in the presence of dislocations, with emphasis on helium self-trapping and migration behaviors. Helium desorption behaviour from different helium trapping states was measured by the thermal desorption spectroscopy. Most of the helium desorbed from the HemVn clusters, and the corresponding desorption peak is located at ~650 K. The desorption peak from helium-dislocation clusters (HemD) is at approximately 805 K. The effect of annealing on the defect evolution was investigated by positron annihilation spectroscopy. For the specimen exposed to helium plasma without displacement damage, the increment of S parameter meant the existence of helium self-trapping behavior (HemVn). Helium atoms could diffuse two to three orders of magnitude deeper than the implantation depth calculated by SRIM. The diffusing helium atoms were gradually trapped by dislocation lines and formed HemD. Elevated temperatures enhance the self-trapping behavior and cause helium atoms to dissociate/desorb from the HemVn clusters, increasing the S parameters at 473–673 K. The gradual recovery of vacancies in the HemVn clusters decreased the S parameter above 673 K.

Abstract:Helium accumulation in advanced nuclear systems would accelerate the failure of structural materials. Nanostructured materials have the potential to mitigate helium effects by providing more nucleation sites for He bubbles. La-doped nanocrystalline 304 austenitic stainless steel (NC304-La) possesses ultra-fine and stable nano-grains ~45 nm in diameter and high-density fine nano-precipitates. In this work, we implanted NC304-La with helium ions, then annealed at different temperatures after implantation. We found that combining the key features of nanocrystalline steels and oxide dispersion-strengthened steels, NC304-La showed excellent bubble swelling resistance. We characterized the interaction between He bubbles and the two features in NC304-La: grain boundaries and nano-precipitates. Through detailed study for the heat-treatment related behaviors of He bubbles in this multi-sink system, the mechanisms of He bubble coarsening resistance in NC304-La were proposed.
Microstructure evolution and performance degradation of sol-gel silica films induced by helium ion irradiation

Abstract:Helium ion implantation in the sol-gel silica films was conducted at different fluences to study the impact of ion irradiation on defects, microstructures, wettability, optical properties and laser damage performance. The damage mechanism and performance degradation of the films induced by helium ion irradiation were analyzed. The cracks are observed after ion implantation and their transverse size increases but the depth decreases with the increase of ion fluence. At the same time, many small pores appear on the film surface and further expand at larger ion fluence. The Si–O–Si bond length and bond angle are reduced by helium ion implantation, thus leading to the densification of silica films. Helium ion implantation causes Si–Si bonds and Si–O bonds to break to form the defects such as ODCs and NBOHCs, further transforming into E′ centers. After ion implantation, the film surface changes from hydrophobic to hydrophilic due to the reduction of –CH 3 groups, thus degrading the anti-pollution performance of the film. The significant decreases of laser damage thresholds of silica films are resulted from the increase of E′ centers and the expansions of cracks and pores. The results provide a reference to evaluate the lifetime of silica films used in high-power laser facilities, which is very important for the research of inertial confinement fusion.

Abstract:The transient thermal shock and helium ion irradiation damage behaviors of oxide dispersion-strengthened tungsten (ODS-W)/CuCrZr alloy joints prepared by direct diffusion bonding and by improved diffusion bonding via surface nano-activation and Cu electroplating were studied. The surface morphologies and interface structures of the ODS-W/CuCrZr joints after thermal shock and He+ irradiation were investigated by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The joint of ODS-W and CuCrZr prepared by the improved diffusion bonding method exhibited superior resistance to crack formation. No obvious plastic deformation was found on the ODS-W surfaces of the ODS-W/CuCrZr joints obtained by either bonding method after transient thermal shock (power density = 0.6 GW/m2). Interfacial debonding was observed to occur at the interface of W and Cu in the direct diffusion-bonded ODS-W/CuCrZr joint where Y2O3 particles exist, but did not occur in the joint prepared using the improved method. The nanostructures formed at the interface of the joint via the improved diffusion bonding method therefore elevated the radiation resistance of the joint. These results should be of relevance for the development of plasma-facing components in future nuclear fusion reactors.
Understanding the Microstructure Evolution of 8Cr4Mo4V Steel under High-Dose-Rate Ion Implantation

Abstract:In this study, the effect of microstructure under various dose rates of plasma immersion ion implantation on 8Cr4Mo4V steel has been investigated for crystallite size, lattice strain and dislocation density. The phase composition and structure parameters including crystallite size, dislocation density and lattice strain have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements and determined from Scherrer's equation and three different Williamson–Hall (W-H) methods. The obtained results reveal that a refined crystallite size, enlarged microstrain and increased dislocation density can be obtained for the 8Cr4Mo4V steel treated by different dose rates of ion implantation. Compared to the crystallite size (15.95 nm), microstrain (5.69 × 10−3) and dislocation density (8.48 × 1015) of the dose rate of 2.60 × 1017 ions/cm2·h, the finest grain size, the largest microstrain and the highest dislocation density of implanted samples can be achieved when the dose rate rises to 5.18 × 1017 ions/cm2·h, the effect of refining is 26.13%, and the increment of microstrain and dislocation density are 26.3% and 45.6%, respectively. Moreover, the Williamson–Hall plots are fitted linearly by taking βcosθ along the y-axis and 4sinθ or 4sinθ/Yhkl or 4sinθ(2/Yhkl)1/2 along the x-axis. In all of the W-H graphs, it can be observed that some of the implanted samples present a negative and a positive slope; a negative and a positive slope in the plot indicate the presence of compressive and tensile strain in the material.

Abstract:The reduced-activation ferritic/martensitic steel, China Low-Activation Martensitic (CLAM) steel, was irradiated with single Fe, sequential He/Fe, sequential Fe/He, and simultaneous Fe+He ion beam irradiations at 350 °C–550 °C to a peak displacement damage dose of 15 dpa with 0 - 110 appm/dpa He to explore the effect of He and its synergism with displacement damage on microstructure evolution. The microstructures of all the irradiated specimens were investigated by transmission electron microscope (TEM). For Fe/He sequential irradiation, He inhibited the growth of dislocation loop induced by high-temperature He post-irradiation and reduced the number density of loops. Non-spherical He bubbles were observed only at post-injection He at 550 °C. The size of non-spherical He bubbles produced at 110 appm/dpa was about twice as large as 11 appm/dpa, and the number density increased about 6.4 times. The number density of dislocation loops induced by sequential He/Fe irradiation is the highest, and the average size of loops is comparable to that caused by simultaneous Fe+He irradiation. Moreover, the sequential Fe/He irradiation induced the lowest number density of loops of approximately 64% of the simultaneous Fe+He irradiation. The spherical bubble was observed in all irradiation with He injection above 350 °C. The average size of spherical He bubbles induced by simultaneous Fe+He irradiation is the largest, and the number density is about 2.6 times that of the sequential Fe/He irradiation. The synergisms of He in different irradiation sequences were analyzed systematically, which helps to better understand the evolutionary processes of the synergistic effect of He and displacement damage.

Abstract:The evolution of helium bubbles in a newly developed Fe9Cr1.5W0.4Si alloy that is an important candidate used as fuel claddings in the Lead-cooled fast reactors was in-situ investigated by transmission electron microscopy during 30 keV He+ irradiation at 500 °C and subsequently annealed at 600 °C. Meanwhile, the evolution of dislocation loops was in-situ researched in the initial stage of irradiation. Two mechanisms including the absorption of irradiation defects and the combination of dislocation loops induced the loop growth. Both He+ irradiation and subsequently annealing induced the initiation, migration, aggregation, and growth of helium bubbles, and changed their shape from spherical to preferential faceted. But it was more obvious under the annealing condition. Helium bubbles would preferentially nucleate and grow at dislocation lines and grain boundaries and had large size. The bubble lines formed at dislocation line during helium irradiation, and annealing made them more obvious and larger. A denuded zone with few helium bubbles appeared near grain boundary, but its width decreased with the increase of helium fluence and annealing time. Meanwhile, annealing would lead to the appearance of super large helium bubbles at grain boundaries. The irradiation hardening and swelling were increased with the increase of helium fluence. The corresponding mechanism was analyzed based on in-situ experimental observation.

Synergy effect of radiation damage on 12Cr-ODS steel by multi-ion-beams

Abstract:In this work, 12Cr-ODS steel samples were irradiated by different combinations of Si, He and H ion beams at room temperature. Mechanical property measurements of the irradiated samples showed that all the samples exhibited irradiation swelling and hardening, but the sample co-irradiated by three ion beams had the biggest swelling and smallest hardening. Combining on the TEM imaging, analyses of irradiation changes of 12Cr-ODS steel samples were carried out. Raman spectra of the irradiated samples revealed carbon precipitated inside the samples, and carbon peak distribution could reflect the radiation damage distribution. The results, which accumulated experimental data and clarified the radiation damage to nuclear materials by synergy effect, are of help for application of 12Cr-ODS steel in an advanced reactor.

Abstract:The ODS ferritic/martensitic (ODS-FM) steel was irradiated up to 500 dpa at 550 °C with 2.5 MeV Fe 2+ ions to investigate the microstructure evolution under low to very high doses. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) were conducted to characterize the microstructure and chemical composition. Only a few a 0 〈100〉 dislocation loops were observed at low doses, which evolved into dislocation networks with increasing dose. Voids preferentially formed at the oxides/matrix interface, and some voids gradually accumulated on grain boundaries and dislocation lines as the dose increased. The oxide particles underwent dissolution, re-precipitation, and coarsening, resulting in the formation of high-density nano-oxide particles that greatly inhibit void swelling. Ti-rich and (Y, O)-rich shells of Y-Ti-O particles were successively formed during the dissolution process.

Abstract:The paper reports an analysis of surface morphology variation and cavity pattern formation in silicon single crystal induced by ion implantation and post-implantation annealing in different regimes. Critical implantation doses required to promote surface erosion are determined for samples subjected to post-implantation annealing and in absence of post-implantation treatment. For instance, implantation with helium ions to fluences below 3 × 10 17 He + /cm 2 without post-implantation annealing does not affect the surface morphology; while annealing of samples implanted with fluences of 2 × 10 17 He + /cm 2 and higher promotes flaking.

Abstract:In this study, we conducted two heat treatment processes, namely double aging (DA) and solid solution followed by double aging (SA), on the Inconel 718 alloy fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM). The aim was to investigate the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Inconel 718 under different heat treatment conditions. To achieve this, we employed advanced techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Tofwerk time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometer (TOF-SIMS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Our experimental findings reveal the presence of cellular high-density dislocation substructures in the as-received (AR) specimens, with a significant accumulation of Laves phase precipitates at grain boundaries and subgrain boundaries. After the DA treatment, the cellular substructure persists, with higher concentrations of γ" and γ' strengthened phases compared to AR specimen. Conversely, the SA specimen undergoes almost complete recrystallization, resulting in the dissolution of brittle Laves phases and a substantial increase in the content of strengthening phase γ'' and γ'. As a consequence of the precipitation of the γ'' and γ' strengthened phase and the modification of the microstructure, the material exhibits enhanced strength and hardness, albeit at the expense of reduced plasticity. The investigation of the relationship between heat treatment processes and precipitation behavior indicates that the SA heat treatment yields favorable mechanical properties that strike a balance between strength and plasticity.

Abstract:The irradiation and annealing behavior of Chinese A508-3 reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steel (0.04 wt% Cu) after 3 MeV Fe-ion irradiation ranging from 0.1 to 20 dpa at room temperature (called RTRPV) and high temperature (250 degrees C, called HTRPV) was studied by positron annihilation Doppler broadening (PADB) spectroscopy and nano-indentation hardness. PADB showed that the density of vacancy-type defects was higher for low-temperature irradiations. The higher hardness was found after high-temperature irradiation because of the formation of solute clusters during irradiation. Positron annihilation measurements revealed the interaction and clustering of vacancies with solute clusters which were introduced by Fe-ion irradiation. For both RTRPVs and HTRPVs, the positron defect parameter and positron diffusion length showed the recovery of the irradiation-induced defects. Total recovery was observed after annealing at 450 degrees C.

Abstract:FeCrAl oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel is regarded as one of the most promising candidate materials for nuclear fission reactors such as supercritical pressurized water reactor (SCPWR), sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR), and lead bismuth-cooled fast reactor (LFR) and so on, since it has excellent irradiation resistance and good corrosion resistance of super-critical water and Pb–Bi coolants. In the present work, irradiation response of a Zr-added FeCrAl ODS steel (15Cr–4Al-0.1Ti-0.6Zr) together with an Al-free ODS (16Cr-0.1Ti) steel and a non-ODS steel T91 was studied. Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the microstructures including grains, dislocations, and oxides in the pristine specimens and irradiation defects in the irradiated specimens. Nano-indentation tests were used to evaluate the change in hardness after irradiation. The oxides in the 15Cr–4Al-0.1Ti-0.6Zr specimen are slightly larger than those in the 16Cr-0.1Ti specimen, but with a similar number density. After irradiated with 9.45 MeV 83Bi35+ to 26 dpa at ambient temperature, hardening was observed in all the specimens. Irradiation hardening of the 15Cr–4Al-0.1Ti-0.6Zr specimen is slightly higher than the 16Cr-0.1Ti specimen but significantly lower than the non-ODS steel T91. The irradiation defects in the ODS steel specimens are apparently smaller than those in T91 with a similar number density. By calculating sink strength of the initial microstructures such as grains, dislocations and oxides, the evolution of irradiation defects was discussed. A linear relationship between the irradiation hardening and the sink strength was established. A similar linear relationship between the calculated irradiation hardening using the TEM data (based on dispersion barrier hardening model (DBH) and Friedel-Kroupa-Hirsch (FKH) model, respectively) and sink strength was also found. The calculated irradiation hardening is relatively lower than the experimental value, indicating the possible contribution of Cr segregation to hardening which needs further study.
