Abstract:Natural nanoparticles are present in soils but their abundance, properties and interactions with other soil components have not been studied widely. We used an ultrasonic‐centrifugal method to disperse and extract nanoparticles from 12 soils sampled in different regions of China. Various techniques were used to study the characteristics of the nanoparticles obtained, including particle size and zeta potential analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that not all soils released nanoparticles by ultrasonic perturbation. For most Mollisols and Alfisols, large amounts of nanoparticles of relatively small size (around 25 nm) and simple composition (only muscovite and montmorillonite) were released preferentially at low ultrasonic energy. The suspension conditions (3–4 g kg−1 nanoparticle in solution with 0.4–0.6 mm ionic strength) were unfavourable for nanoparticle aggregation and the suspensions remained stable for up to 100 days. In contrast, it was difficult to release nanoparticles from Ultisols and Entisols. Ultisols and Entisols released small amounts of nanoparticles (size around 70 nm) and the suspension was very unstable, and some released no nanoparticles unless the dispersant was added. The study also indicated that the characteristics of the isolated nanoparticles were directly related to their respective matrix soils.

Abstract:Oxy-naphthenic acids (oxy-NM) are one of the major components of NA mixtures in wastewaters from petroleum industries. The limited available data indicated that oxy-NAs were considered as a potential marker for the degradation of NAs, and some oxy-NAs exhibited endocrine disrupting activities. However, the lack of information on the structures and occurrences of oxy-NAs in oilfield wastewaters limited the interpretations of the biotransformation pathways of NAs and structure-specific toxicity. A sensitive method for simultaneous determination of oxy-NAs together with NAs was developed by combining MAX extraction column and UPLC-ESI--QTOF-MS. The 2000-fold SPE preconcentration step was highly specific for acids and the prewash solvent greatly reduced matrix effects in the UPLC-ESI--QTOF-MS analysis, resulting in an increase in sensitivity down to detection limits in the ng/L range. To provide structural information within each oxy-NA isomer class, a new method was developed by derivatizing oxy-NAs with dansyl chloride by UPLC-ESI+-QTOF-MS. The molecular ion dansyl derivatives from the corresponding oxy-NAs and characteristic fragmentation ions, not detected before derivatization, were observed in the extracts of oilfield wastewater, providing evidence that O-3-NAs and O-4-NAs were mainly composed of OH-NAs and (OH)(2)-NAs, respectively. Semiquantification of oxy-NAs and NAs in various oilfield wastewaters revealed NAs, O-3-NAs, and O-4-NAs present at concentrations of 187-397, 44-146, and 40-108 mu g/L, respectively. Significantly different profiles of NA mixtures were observed in petroleum refinery wastewater and oil sands extraction water, but the profile of oxy-NAs was similar to NAs in different wastewaters suggesting the existence of biotransformation between NAs and oxy-NAs in the environment, and hydroxylation could be one of the major biotransformation pathways of NAs.

Abstract:Seepage from oil sands tailings ponds (OSTP), which contain toxic naphthenic acids (NAs), can infiltrate into groundwater. Clay sediment layer beneath is a critical barrier for reducing the infiltration of NAs into the sand sediment layer, where groundwater channels reside. Biodegradation has great potential as a strategy for NAs removal, but little is known about NAs biodegradability and potential functional microbes in these pristine sediments. This study investigated the potential for anaerobic biodegradation of NAs by microbial consortia enriched from clay and sand sediments underlying OSTP, amended with either acid extracted organics or Merichem NAs, under nitrate- and sulfate-reducing conditions. Degradation of NAs only be detected after DOC concentration reached to steady state after 163 days. Microbial community analysis shows that different electron acceptors, sediment types, and NAs sources associated with specific microbial taxa and can explain 14.8, 13.9 % and 5% of variation of microbial community structures, respectively. The DOC and methane were the most important geochemical properties for microbial community variations. This study approved the potential capability of indigenous microbial communities from the pristine sediments in NA degradation, demonstrating the barrier function of pristine clay sediments underlying OSTP in prohibiting organic contaminants from entering into groundwater.

Abstract:This work reports the monitoring and assessment of naphthenic acids (NAs) in oil sands process-affected water (OSPW), Pleistocene channel aquifer groundwater (PLCA), and oil sands basal aquifer groundwater (OSBA) from an active oil sands development in Alberta, Canada, using ultra performance liquid chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-TOF-MS) analysis with internal standard (ISTD) and external standard (ESTD) calibration methods and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) for compositional analysis. PLCA was collected at 45-51 m depth and OSBA was collected at 67-144 m depth. Results of Ox-NA concentrations follow an order as OSPW > OSBA > PLCA, indicating that occurrences of NAs in OSBA were likely related to natural bitumen deposits instead of OSPW. Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) was applied to avoid the matrix effect for the ESTD method. Reduced LLE efficiency accounted for the divergence of the ISTD and ESTD calibrated results for oxidized NAs. Principle component analysis results of O2 and O4 species could be employed for differentiation of water types, while classical NAs with C13-15 and Z (-4)-(-6) and aromatic O2-NAs with C16-18 and Z (-14)-(-16) could be measured as marker compounds to characterize water sources and potential temporal variations of samples, respectively. FTICR-MS results revealed that compositions of NA species varied greatly among OSPW, PLCA, and OSBA, because of NA transfer and transformation processes. This work contributed to the understanding of the concentration and composition of NAs in various types of water, and provided a useful combination of analytical and statistical tools for monitoring studies, in support of future safe discharge of treated OSPW.
Naphthenic acids in coastal sediments after the Hebei Spirit oil spill: a potential indicator for oil contamination.

Abstract:Naphthenic acids (NAs) as toxic components in most petroleum sources are suspected to be one of the major pollutants in the aquatic environment following oil spills, and the polarity and persistence of NAs make it a potential indicator for oil contamination. However, the contamination and potential effects of pollutants in oil spill affected areas remain unknown. To investigate NAs in oil spill affected areas, a sensitive method was first established for analysis of NAs, together with oxy-NAs in sediment samples by UPLC-QTOF-MS. Then the method was applied to determine the NA mixtures in crude oil, weathered oil, and sediments from the spilled sites after the Hebei Spirit oil spill, Taean, South Korea (Dec. 2007). Concentrations of NAs, O-3-NAs, and O-4-NAs were found to be 7.8-130, 3.6-44, and 0.8-20 mg kg(-1) dw in sediments from the Taean area, respectively, which were much greater than those measured in the reference sites of Manlipo and Anmyundo beaches. Concentrations of NAs were 50-100 times greater than those (0.077-2.5 mg kg(-1) dw) of PAHs in the same sediment samples, thus the ecological risk of NAs in oil spill affected areas deserves more attention. The sedimentary profiles of. oil-derived NAs and background NAs centered around compounds with 21-35 and 12-21 carbons, respectively, indicating that the crude-derived NA mixtures originating from the 2007 oil spill were persistent. Acyclic NAsn=5-20 were easily degraded compared to cyclic NAsn=21-41 during the oil weathering processes, and the ratio of oxy-NAsn=21-41 relative to NAsn=21-41, could be a novel index to estimate the degree of oil weathering in sediments. Altogether, the persistent oil-derived NAsn=21-41 could be used as a potential indicator for oil-specific contamination, as such compounds would not be much affected by the properties of coastal sediments possibly due to the high sorption of the negatively charged compounds (NAs) in sediment.

Abstract:Naphthenic acids (NAs) are a natural component of petroleum, which account for about 2% of severe ecological toxicity in addition to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. With the growth in demand for energy, a large number of NAs have leaked into soil environments through oil industry processes, which have caused enormous potential threats to human health and ecosystems. However, there are few studies about the degradation process of exogenous NAs and their effects on microbial community structures in soil. This research explores the degradation process of NAs and their dynamics in microbial communities in soil by adding a high concentration of 180 mg·kg-1 of NAs to natural, clean soil with the aid of liquid chromatography and high-throughput sequencing technologies. This study found that:① Natural clean soil has a strong capability to degrade high concentration of NAs with about 50% of the NAs degraded within 5 days, which stabilized at 80% after 30 days of the experiment; ② Pollution with NAs obviously alters the microbial community structure as the number of specific OTU increased and were mainly distributed in phylum of unidentified Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes; ③ Under high concentrations of NAs, the content of Bacteroidetes and Acidobacteria phylum and the γ-Proteobacteria of Proteobacteria phylum all increased swiftly and were speculated to be a potential agents for NA degradation, with the relative abundance ratio of Bacteroidetes and Acidobacteria increasing from 4.2% and 2% to 20.3% and 5.5%, respectively, while a 24.8% decrease was found in Actinobacteria phylum; ④ This study revealed the degradation process of exogenous NAs and their effects on microbial community structure in soil, which provided scientific support for the ecological restoration of petroleum pollution and further study in this area.

Abstract:Naphthenic acids (NAs) are one class of compounds in wastewaters from petroleum industries that are known to cause toxic effects, and their removal from oilfield wastewater is an important challenge for remediation of large volumes of petrochemical effluents. The present study investigated occurrences and behaviors of total NAs and aromatic NAs in a refinery wastewater treatment plant, located in north China, which combined physicochemical and biological processes. Concentrations of total NAs were semiquantified to be 113-392 μg/L in wastewater from all the treatment units, and the percentages of aromatic NAs in total NAs was estimated to be 2.1-8.8%. The mass reduction for total NAs and aromatic NAs was 15±16% and 7.5±24% after the physicochemical treatment, respectively. Great mass reduction (total NAs: 65±11%, aromatic NAs: 86±5%) was observed in the biological treatment units, and antiestrogenic activities observed in wastewater from physicochemical treatment units disappeared in the effluent of the activated sludge system. The distributions of mass fractions of NAs demonstrated that biodegradation via activated sludge was the major mechanism for removing alicyclic NAs, aromatic NAs, and related toxicities in the plant, and the polycyclic NA congener classes were relatively recalcitrant to biodegradation, which is a complete contrast to the preferential adsorption of NAs with higher cyclicity (low Z value). Removal efficiencies of total NAs were 73±17% in summer, which were higher than those in winter (53±15%), and the seasonal variation was possibly due to the relatively high microbial biotransformation activities in the activated sludge system in summer (indexed by O3-NAs/NAs). The results of the investigations indicated that biotransformation of NA mixtures by the activated sludge system were largely affected by temperature, and employing an efficient adsorbent together with biodegradation processes would help cost-effectively remove NAs in petroleum effluents.

Abstract:Naphthenic acids (NAs) are toxic components in refinery wastewater and in oil sands process water. The presence of NAs in aqueous environments would cause serious environmental problems. Development of a rapid method for screening and determination of trace NAs is urgent. In this work, a near-infrared fluorescence carbon quantum dots (CQDs) was successfully synthesized with p-phenylenediamine (PPD) and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400) by the hydrothermal method. It showed a good fluorescence response to NAs with good detectability. The limit of detection was calculated to be 0.16 mmol‧L−1, with a linear range from 0.5 to 15 mmol‧L−1. The detection mechanism of NAs and CQDs was also proposed with in situ infrared spectrometer. This work provides new insights into the fluorescence detection of CQDs in the petrochemical industry, broadening the application of CQDs in the detection of environmental organic pollutants.

Abstract:Naphthenic acids (NAs) naturally occur in crude oil and its associated produced water, presenting significant challenges, such as corrosion, in refinery apparatus and ecotoxicity in aquatic habitats. This study delineates a multivariate method to quantify NAs in produced water via electrospray ionization coupled with high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometry (ESI-Orbitrap MS). By employing liquid-liquid extraction, followed by direct infusion ESI(-)-Orbitrap MS, we characterized and quantified NAs employing a partial least-squares regression (PLS) model enhanced by the ordered predictor selection (OPS) algorithm. Thirty-six produced water samples were utilized, with 24 allocated for calibration and 12 designated for validation. The PLS-OPS model demonstrated notable accuracy in predicting NA concentrations in simulated and actual produced water samples ranging from ∼30 to 300 mg·L-1. This methodology offers a rapid yet robust alternative for quantifying NAs using mass spectrometry augmented by PLS and the OPS. Its significance is underscored by its potential to equip the petroleum industry with a swift and reliable monitoring mechanism for NAs in produced water, thereby aiding in mitigating environmental and operational risks.
Assessing the Toxicity of Naphthenic Acids Using a Microbial Genome Wide Live Cell Reporter Array System.

Abstract:Mixtures of naphthenic acids (NAs), which include cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl carboxylic acids, have been suggested to be toxic components in oils spills, effluents from the petrochemical industry and in oil sands process waters (OSPW). The present study demonstrated, for the first time, an application of a high throughput live bacterial cell array in a genome-scale investigation of the toxic mechanisms of environmental chemicals, a commercial NAs technical mixture extracted from crude oil. Real time gene profiling of time- and concentration- dependent responses of live cells exposed to NAs for three hours was conducted using a library of 1800 fluorescent transcriptional reporters for Escherichia coli (E. coli) growing in 384-well plates. The response patterns obtained after exposure to NAs suggested that the primary cellular responses were up-regulation of genes in the pentose phosphate pathway, involved in the molecular function of NADP or NADPH binding, and down-regulation of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter complex. Transcriptional networks that were significantly modulated by NAs included those that were regulated by transcriptional factors such as CRP-, RecA-, and GadE. Down-regulation of the SOS response pathway suggested that DNA damage might not be the direct result of NAs within the first three hours of exposure. However, CRP-dependent genes modulated by exposure to NAs indicated that the cellular level of cyclic AMP was altered immediately upon exposure of cells to NAs. Furthermore, the linear range of the concentration-response curve of the selected gene reporters encompassed a range of concentrations between 10 and 1000 mg NAs/L, which covers concentrations typically observed in the environment and makes this assay system ideal for the detection of environmental NAs.
Effect of Secondary Oil Migration Distance on Composition of Acidic Nso Compounds in Crude Oils Determined by Negative-Ion Electrospray Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:The acidic and neutral NSO compounds in a series of Duvernay-sourced oils in Canada, which are believed to have migrated extensively over relatively long distances such as along the Rimbey-Meadowbrook reef trends, were characterized by negative-ion electrospray (ESI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). Heteroatomic compounds were characterized according to their class (number of nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur heteroatoms), degree of aromaticity [rings plus double bonds (DBE)] and carbon number distribution. The N-1, N1O1, N1O2, N1S1, O-1 and O-2 classes were identified in Duvernay-sourced oils. With increasing migration distance, the relative abundance of O-2, N1O1 and N1O2 showed a significant decrease, while the O-1 class increased from < 10% to nearly 30% of the total. With increasing migration along the Rimbey-Meadowbrook reef trend, pyrrolic nitrogen compounds (N1 class) shows an enrichment of alkylcarbazoles (DBE = 9) relative to alkylbenzocarbazoles (DBE = 12), and of higher homologous relative to the lower homologous. O-1 compounds show a relative enrichment of those with low DBE values. Additionally, the N1O1 and N1S1 compounds show a relative enrichment of those with high DBE values, and of higher homologues compared to the lower homologues, indicating great potential for developing new migration indices. Derivatization for Nontargeted Screening of Acids in Oilfield Refinery Wastewater: Identification and Behaviors of Recalcitrant Chlorinated Naphthenic Acids

Abstract:The nontargeted scanning chemical profiling approach has shown great potential to identify unknown pollutants or novel biological markers; however, the structure identification of unknown compounds is a challenge. In this study, a carboxyl-specific derivatization reagent, N-(4-aminomethylphenyl) pyridinium (AMPP), was coupled with QTOF-MSE-MS scanning to establish a high-throughput nontargeted scanning method for acid compounds. The scanning method can isolate the precursor by data-independent acquisition and can select all of the acid compounds based on the characteristic fragment generated from the derivatization reagent. The method was applied to scan naphthenic acid fraction compounds in petroleum refinery wastewater and identify 70-126 NAs, 30-68 oxy-NAs, 54-60 NAs containing nitrogen, and 66-75 NAs containing both nitrogen and oxygen. Chlorinated NAs (Cl-NAs) including monochlorinated NAs (Cl-NAs), monochlorinated hydroxylated NAs (Cl-OH-NAs), and dichlorinated dihydroxylated NAs (Cl2-(OH)2-NAs) were first identified with the aid of chlorine isotopic patterns. The Cl-NAs might be naturally presented in crude oil together with NAs. Occurrences and mass balances of Cl-NAs were further assessed in the wastewater treatment plant in north China. The total concentrations of ∑Cl-NAs were estimated to be 12 ± 7.8-18 ± 17 μg/L and 8.5 ± 2.0-68 ± 35 μg/g in the wastewater and solid samples, respectively. The removal efficiencies of Cl-NAs (-29.9 to 34.3%) were much lower than those of NAs, suggesting the high recalcitrance of chlorinated compounds during the treatment processes. The estimated mass loss fractions due to degradation for Cl-NAs were 26.5-53.4% of initial loadings, and relatively high fractions (32.1-56.8%) were observed in the effluent directly discharged to the environment. Advanced treatment techniques are needed to effectively reduce the persistent Cl-NAs in the wastewater.
Complex origins of naphthenic oils in the Junggar Basin, China: Biodegradation vs. non-biodegradation

Abstract:Naphthenic crude oils are scarce resources of great value. Their origins are generally considered to be related to biodegradation, which consumes paraffins and enriches naphthenes. However, other possible controls on the origins of the naphthenic oils remain insufficiently clear. To fill the knowledge gap, we conducted a case study in the Junggar Basin by using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography–mass spectrometry for semi-quantitative analysis of naphthenes in combination with relevant organic geochemical data, and address its global implications by synthesizing the typical naphthenic oils discovered worldwide. It was found that the occurrence of naphthenic crude oils in the basin was not caused by biodegradation alone, while sedimentary paleoenvironments and source-rock biological inputs (i.e., indicative of organofacies) are important controlling factors. Naphthenic crude oils are mainly derived from dolomitic source rocks of the Permian Fengcheng Formation in the Mahu Sag of the northwestern basin, where the average naphthene content is 43.8 %, with an average naphthene/paraffin (N/P) ratio of 1.24. Source rocks were deposited in a reducing, hypersaline and stratified alkaline lake (0.75 < pristane/phytane (Pr/Ph) < 1.46, gammacerane/C30αβ hopane > 0.23), with source-rock biological inputs being dominated by halophilic algae (steranes/hopanes > 1, C28/C27-29-steranes > 40 %). In contrast, crude oils in the Jimusaer Sag of the southeastern basin are paraffinic–naphthenic with an average naphthene content of 24.8 % and an average N/P ratio of 0.75. Source rocks here were deposited in an anoxic–oxic lake of low salinity (1.05 < Pr/Ph < 1.59, 0.15 < gammacerane/C30αβH < 0.18), and organic matter consists of mixed bacteria, algae, and terrigenous higher plants (steranes/hopanes < 1, C28/C27-29-steranes < 40 %). Thermal maturity and biodegradation also control the composition of naphthenic oils. High thermal maturity promotes cracking of naphthenic groups, whereas moderate biodegradation (rank PM < 6) promotes naphthenic groups by preferentially catabolizing paraffins. Our results suggest that halophilic algae in strongly-reducing alkaline lakes provide important material for the generation of naphthenic oils in the Mahu Sag and the occurrence of naphthenic crude oils is not controlled solely by biodegradation; influencing factors are complex and vary between regions without universality. This may be the reason for their limited and sparse distribution worldwide.

Abstract:Based on the systematic analyses of light hydrocarbon, saturated and aromatic fractions of over 60 oil samples collected from oil fields in the northern and western Qaidam basin, the geochemical characteristics of the oils in the two regions were studied. Based on the calibrating of analytical data of source rocks, identification parameters on age-specific biomarkers for oil source rock age were put forward. The research results show that the oils in northern margin have K 1 (Mango's light hydrocarbon parameter) values of around 1.1, abundant methylcyclohexane and toluene, odd over even n-alkane preference, high Pr/Ph ratios, reflecting the feature of organic matter deposited in Jurassic freshwater lacustrine facies. Whereas, the oils in the western region arc characterized by K 1 values of almost over 1.2, high abundance of isoalkanes in light hydrocarbons, bimodal n-alkane distribution with odd-to-even (C 11∼C 17) and even-to-odd (C 18∼C 28) predominance, low Pr/Ph, high relative concentration (>30%) Of C 28 sterane, abundant alkyl-chromans (MTTC) with 5, 7, 8-trimethyl-/8-methyl-MTTC ratios<10, indicating the signature of Tertiary saline lacustrine organic matter. Oleanane and norcholestane are believed to be useful age-specific biomarkers for differentiating the oils derived from Jurassic and Tertiary source rocks. Tertiary oils are confirmed by the appearance of oleanane and high 24-/24-+27-norcholestane ratios>0.6. Jurassic oils lack oleanane and have low 24-/24-+27- norcholestane ratios (<0. 25).
Diversity and Abundance of N-Alkane-Degrading Bacteria in the Near-Surface Soils of A Chinese Onshore Oil and Gas Field

Abstract:Alkane-degrading bacteria have long been used as an important biological indicator for oil and gas prospecting, but their ecological characteristics in hydrocarbon microseep habitats are still poorly understood. In this study, the diversity and abundance of n-alkane-degrading bacterial community in the near-surface soils of a Chinese onshore oil and gas field were investigated using molecular techniques. Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analyses in combination with cloning and sequencing of alkB genes revealed that Gram-negative genotypes (Alcanivorax and Acinetobacter) dominated n-alkane-degrading bacterial communities in the near-surface soils of oil and gas reservoirs, while the dominant microbial communities were Gram-positive bacteria (Mycobacterium and Rhodococcus) in background soil. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results furthermore showed that the abundance of alkB genes increased substantially in the surface soils above oil and gas reservoirs even though only low or undetectable concentrations of hydrocarbons were measured in these soils. The results of this study implicate that trace amounts of volatile hydrocarbons migrate from oil and gas reservoirs, and likely result in the changes of microbial communities in the near-surface soil.
Quantitative assessment of gas washing of oils in the Tazhong area of the Tarim Basin, Northwest China

Abstract:Gas washing has been known in the Tazhong area of the Tarim Basin, but its quantitative assessment has not yet been reported. Here the influence of gas washing fractionation in the area was discussed based on the gas chromatogram data of 68 oils and the results of the mixing experiments of a black oil and a condensate. The results show that the intensity of gas washing fractionation decreased generally from northern to southern part and vertically from deep reservoirs to shallow reservoirs. The gas washing fractionation was mainly controlled by fault systems in this area, with the increase of n -alkane mass depletion positively correlated to the number and scale of faults. Gas washing fractionation appears to have affected the hydrocarbon property, and as a result the diversity of the crude oils is markedly controlled by gas washing. In addition, the occurrence of waxy oil in this area may be resulted from multiple factors including gas washing, mixed filling and migration fractionation.

Abstract:Saturated and aromatic fractions of typical marine and terrestrial oils and seepages collected from exploratory wells and outcrop in the northeastern Sichuan Basin, respectively, were characterized in molecular geochemistry using GC/MS and GC/MS/MS and their origins were also discussed in combination with analytical data of source rocks. The results indicated that oils from the Middle Jurassic Qianfoya Formation in Well Xinqingxi-1 in Puguang structural belt and Well Yuanba-9 in Yuanba structural belt show a pristane predominance over phytane (Pr/Ph>1.5), low amount of tricyclic terpanes with ETR values below 1.2 and abundant fluorene series in aromatic hydrocarbons. Based on the correlation of carbon isotopes between oils and kerogens from related source rocks, the oils were validated to be derived from lacustrine source rocks of the Qianfoya Formation. However, these two oils could have different organic sources and depositional settings due to a significant difference in diahopane abundance. The Permian oil in Well Chuanyue-84 of Puguang structural belt shows a relatively low Pr/Ph ratio (0.82), abundant tricyclic terpanes and detectable C26 norcholestane. Carbon isotopes indicated a genetic correlation between the oil and marine source rocks of the Upper Permian Longtan Formation. The seepages from the Feixianguan and Changxing formations in Erlangmiao, Jiangyou area are characterized by dominant C29 sterane over C27 and C28 homologues, a high 24-isopropyl-/24-n-propyl-cholestane ratio (1.1), predominant 3β- and 2α-methylsteranes in methylated steranes, a low 24-/(24-+27-)norcholestane ratio (below 0.2) and the absence of triaromatic dinosteroids. These age-related biomarkers, in conjunction with the isotopic depletion for whole oils (-34.1‰ to -34.6‰), suggested that the seepages could originate from Sinian-Cambrian source rocks.

Abstract:An easy to operate and economic separation of alkylated naphthalnenes from aromatic hydrocarbons in crude oils is reported in this paper.The GC-MS tests show that this method could provide a complete separation of alkylated naphthalenes from crude oils,solving the problem that the maturity parameters of naphthalenes in total aromatics methylated with several methyls are difficult to determine accurately by the GC-MS test because of heavy co-elution and laying the foundation for the free carbon isotope test.This method can be used not only for crude oils but also for other types of sedimentary samples for it can give a complete separation and involving only few sample amounts.As an application,the distribution of alkylated naphthalnenes of some typical oil samples in the petroleum system of Lower Paleozoic in Lunnan region of Tarim Basin was studied elementarily in this paper.

Abstract:Ultra-performance liquid chromatography ion mobility time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-IM-TOFMS) was utilized for the analysis of naphthenic acids (NAs) in fractions of pH-dependent sequential liquid-liquid extractions from oil sands process-affected water. Ion-mobility separation technique allowed the differentiation of OyS-NAs (2 ≤ y ≤ 4) from Ox-NAs (2 ≤ x ≤ 5) via drift time versus retention time separations. The results indicated that the addition of S atom to the O2-NA molecule led to a lower increase in the dissociation constant (pKa) compared to that caused by the addition of O atom. Because additional O is present as OH while the S atom is present as the CSC structure, the latter does not involve into the deprotonation process directly. The pKa value decreased along with increasing carbon number and |Z| number for O2-, O3-, O4-, and O2S-NA species, except for O5-, O3S-, and O4S-NA species, each of which are comprised of chemical structures with distinct functional groups. A calculation model was developed to estimate pKa values for individual and total NA species via nonlinear regression curve fitting, utilizing the relative abundances of detected NA species. pKa values were calculated as 3.9 for total NAs, 3.3 for O2-NAs, 4.4 for O3-NAs, 7.3 for O4-NAs, and 4.1 for O2S-NAs. Knowledge of NAs pKa is crucially important for the comprehensive understanding of their potential transformation route and toxicity as well as for the development of water remediation applications. Both the ion-mobility separation technique and the new calculation model could be widely applied for the investigation of other complicated pollutants present in water and wastewater.
