Abstract:It is very challenging to develop luminescent detection methods for iodide ions due to their significant fluorescence quenching of general fluorophores induced by the heavy-atom effect. Herein, we reveal a unique crystallization-induced bright phosphorescence of tetraphenylphosphonium iodide (TPP I) and develop a novel time-gated detection method for iodide ions to minimize the autofluorescence from complex biological samples. Both the involvement of heavy iodide ion and accessible ionic interaction-induced organic crystals contribute to the accomplishment of a very high phosphorescence quantum yield (0.42) for TPP I. This specific iodide-triggered bright organic phosphorescence enables the development of a novel time-gated detection method for iodide ions in the luminescence turn-on manner and further offers an opportunity to establish a facile test strip for the visual detection of iodide ions based on solid-state phosphorescence on a solid substrate. Excellent performance of this probe in imaging iodide in live cells and intriguing use in double encryption illustrate the versatile and broad application prospects of highly efficient organic ionic crystals in various areas.

Abstract:A fluorescent probe based on ternary AgFeS2 quantum dots has been prepared for the design of ternary chalcogenides. The nanoparticles are synthesized with oleylamine as a stabilizer at a low temperature (particle size in the range of 2 to 3 nm) and they exhibit an intense blue emission in aqueous media. As for their internal structure, each nanoparticle's relative stoichiometric ratio (AgFe1.01S1.91) is very close to the theoretical value of 1:1:2. Their magnetic properties have been studied with a vibrating sample magnetometer and they have ferromagnetism between 4 K and 298 K (applied magnetic field ranging between −10,000 and 10,000 Oe). In the presence of iodide ions, the emission at 458 nm derived from AgFeS2 QDs has been observed to give rise to fluorescence quenching. The detection system is based on a static quenching process and morphological change between iodide ions and AgFeS2, which has a good linear range from 0 to 37.5 μmol/L, with a limit of detection of 0.99 μM. The nanoprobe responds within 30 s for the efficient detection of iodide. Such functional quantum dots will provide a powerful indicator in environmental and bio-sensing applications.

Abstract:A simple naphthalimide fluorophore NAP-H<sub>2</sub>O was designed and synthesized. Basic photophysical properties were investigated, especially found that the probe showed robust green fluorescence in water compared with that in various organic solvents, and the specific mechanism was conformed to be the aggregation induced emission (AIE) through dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis, solid-state luminescence and fluorescence imaging. Accordingly, the capability of NAP-H<sub>2</sub>O for water sensing was examined, and good linear relationships between fluorescence intensities at the green emission band and the water content were obtained, enabling quantitative detection of water in organic solvents. The detection limits were calculated to be 0.004 % (v/v) in ACN, 0.117 % (v/v) in 1,4-dioxane, 0.028 % (v/v) in THF, 0.022 % (v/v) in DMF and 0.146 % (v/v) in DMSO, respectively. In addition, the probe presented fast response time within 5 s to water and good photostability. Furthermore, the probe was successfully applied for fast and naked-eye detection of water in organic solvents via test papers. This work provides a rapid, sensitive and naked-eye method for trace amount detection of water in organic solvents and has potential for practical applications.

Abstract:A highly selective fluorescent turn-on probe for CN– bearing a benzo [e] indolium group as a fluorophore and binding site was reported. The detection of CN– was performed via the nucleophilic attack of CN– toward the benzo [e] indolium group of the probe, resulting in a prominent fluorescence enhancement and an obvious color change. The probe shown a highly selectivity in water and could be performed in a range of pH value between 6 and 9. The detection limit was 4.6 × 10−8 M, which could be detected CN– in drinking water. A simple paper test strip system for the rapid monitoring of CN– was developed.

Abstract:A novel indolium-based fluorescent probe for the detection of CN− was developed based on the conjugation of 1, 2, 3, 3-Tetramethyl-3H-indolium iodide and 2-acetyl benzothiophene. The introduction of external CN− caused a nucleophilic attack to the quaternary amine salt structure in the probe and resulted in the departure of iodide ions and the steric rotation of the index salt group, which caused fluorescence quenching. The titration experiments showed that the probe had rapid qualitative and quantitative analysis capabilities for CN−. Moreover, the relevant biocompatibility experiments also demonstrated the potential application value of the probe.

Abstract:We have designed and synthesized a novel simple colorimetric fluorescent probe with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. Probe 5-(4-(diphenylamine)phenyl) thiophen-2-formaldehyde W exhibited a turn-on fluorescent response to cyanide ion (CN − ), which induces distinct visual color changes. Probe W exhibited a highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescence response for the detection of CN − over a wide pH range (4–11) and in the presence of common interferents. The linear detection of CN − over the concentration range of 4.00–38.00 μM ( R 2 = 0.9916, RSD = 0.02) was monitored by UV-Vis absorption spectrometry (UV-Vis) with the limit of detection determined to be 0.48 μM. The linear detection of CN − over the concentration range of 8.00–38.00 μM was examined by fluorescence spectrophotometry ( R 2 = 0.99086, RSD = 0.031), and the detection limit was found to be 68.00 nM. The sensing mechanisms were confirmed by 1 H NMR spectroscopic titrations, X-ray crystallographic analysis, and HRMS. Importantly, probe W was found to show rapid response, high selectivity, and sensitivity for cyanide anions in real water samples, over the range of 100.17∼100.86% in artificial lake water and 100.54∼101.64% in running water by UV-Vis absorption spectrometry, and over the range of 99.42∼100.71% in artificial lake water and 100.59∼101.17% in running water by fluorescence spectrophotometry. Importantly, this work provides a simple and effective approach which uses an economically cheap and uncomplicated synthetic route for the selective, sensitive, and quantitative detection of CN − ions in systems relevant to the environment and health.

Abstract:Nanomaterial-based sensors have emerged as promising candidates for iodide ions sensing owing to their unique properties, such as high surface area, tunable surface chemistry, and excellent electrical/optical characteristics. Iodide ions (I−) hold prominent significance in biological, food, and environmental samples. Therefore, developing novel chemosensors with enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, reliability, and reusability to detect iodide ions is crucial. This review article discusses the fundamental fluorometric mechanisms of nanomaterials for iodide ions sensing, including (i) photo-induced electron transfer, (ii) internal charge transfer, (iii) metal-ligand charge transfer, (iv) fluorescence resonance energy transfer, (v) excited-state intramolecular proton transfer, (vi) upconversion fluorescence, (vii) excimer mechanism, and (viii) colorimetric sensing mechanism. Moreover, various metal-based nanoparticles (Au, Ag, Pd, and Cu), bimetallic nanoparticles (Pd–Pt, Fe–Co, Cu–Ni), metal sulfide-based nanoparticles (CdS, ZnS, and CuS), and quantum dots (CdSe, C-dots, and graphene dots) explored for iodide ions sensing during 2013–2023 are discussed. Finally, various potential applications, associated challenges, and possible solutions for detecting iodide ions using nanoparticles are also presented in detail.

Abstract:A D−A type of luminophore, TPA-CDP, was designed and synthesized by using triphenylamine (TPA) as D (electron donor), 1,3-diaryl pyrazole with cyano groups (CDP) as A (electron acceptor) and employing a cyanovinyl segment as a recognition group. Firstly, TPA-CDP demonstrates effective fluorescence quenching as a sensor for I− by the nucleophilic addition reaction of the cyanovinyl segment with a high level of sensitivity, selectivity and a low determination limit of 4.43 μM. Interestingly, TPA-CDP exhibited an AIE phenomenon with the fw value reaching 50%. In addition, TPA-CDP displayed distinct mechanochromic fluorescence behavior with 70 nm red shift, which was observed over four repeated cycles. Furthermore, the mechanochromic fluorescence behavior of TPA-CDP, as observed in powder XRD experiments, was found to be associated with the morphological transition from a crystalline state to an amorphous state. These results confirm the significant potential of CDP as a powerful electron-deficient component in the creation of D−A-type mechanochromic fluorescence materials and biosensors for detecting I−.

Abstract:One kind of novel dicyanisophorone-based colorimetric fluorescent probe 3 has been prepared for recognizing peroxynitrite in aqueous condition. Large bathochromic shift of the absorption band is observed upon titration with ONOO–, inducing a clear solution color change from yellow to pale pink which enabling "naked-eye" detection possible. Moreover, probe 3 can react instantly with ONOO–accompanied by significant fluorescence enhancement at 621 nm while the detection limit is as low as 37 nM. Most importantly, probe 3 exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity towards ONOO– over other competitive ions in the aqueous solutions. Probe 3 has also been successfully applied in living MCF-7 cells and the result suggests that probe 3, could be applied as a potential candidate for the detection of ONOO–.

Abstract:This work presents the design and synthesis of a new fluorescent probe IF-Br-F for the specific detection of fluoride ions. The IF-Br-F probe has excellent fluorescence properties, and the mechanism of the probe response to fluoride ions was successfully verified via HRMS and DFT calculations. IF-Br-F has high sensitivity and low detection limit (5.82 × 10-7 mol L-1) and successfully detects fluoride ions in actual water samples. The probe can be applied to fluorescence imaging of zebrafish, cells, and Arabidopsis roots and exhibits low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility.

Abstract:Fluorescent probes were promising ultrasensitive candidates in the sensing area. Herein, a fluorescent indicator bearing an active photochemical reactive site based on naphthalimide was designed and synthesized. Under UV irradiation, the photocyclization reaction to form imidazole occurred through the intramolecular addition reaction between α-amine and imine. This photochemical reaction was dynamically monitored in real time by significant fluorescence and UV spectrum changes. The reaction mechanism was further verified by NMR, MS, IR and free radical quenching reaction. The photocyclization reactions of analogous substrates based on this mechanism were also monitored by self-reporting spectrum changes.

Abstract:Currently, there is a great need to develop methods for the selective detection of fluoride anions (F(-) ) owing to their toxicity in the environment and biological function in living systems. In this study, we developed a new fluorescent probe (probe 1) employing a Si-O bond as a highly selective recognition receptor for detecting F(-) via intramolecular charge transfer. Probe 1 could detect F(-) quantitatively using the turn-on fluorescence spectroscopy method with excellent sensitivity in the range of 4-38 μM and a detection limit of 0.26 μM; the detection time was < 17 min. Abstract:Nitrite (NO 2 − ) is a widely used food additive and long-term aging of cooked leftovers may also contribute to the formation of NO 2 − , excessive consumption of NO 2 − is harmful to human health. Developing an effective sensing strategy for on-site monitoring of NO 2 − has attracted considerable attention. Herein, a novel colorimetric and fluorometric probe ND-1 based on photoinduced electron transfer effect (PET) was designed for highly selective and sensitive detection of nitrite (NO 2 − ) in foods. The probe ND-1 was strategically constructed by employing naphthalimide as the fluorophore and o -phenylendiamine as the specific recognition site for NO 2 − . The triazole derivative ND-1-NO 2 - could be produced exclusively by reacting with NO 2 − , leading to a visible colorimetric change from yellow to colorless accompanied by a significantly enhanced fluorescence intensity at 440 nm. The probe ND-1 exhibited promising sensing performances towards NO 2 − including high selectivity, rapid response time (within 7 minutes), low detection limit (47.15 nM) and wide quantitative detection range (0–35 μM). In addition, probe ND-1 was capable of quantitative detecting of NO 2 − in real food samples (including pickled vegetables and cured meat products) with satisfactory recovery rates (97.61%–103.08%). Moreover, the paper device loaded by probe ND-1 could be utilized for visual monitoring of NO 2 − levels variation of stir-fried greens. This study provided a feasible method for the accurate, traceable and rapid on-site monitoring NO 2 − in foods.

Abstract:Benzothiazole refers to a type of heteroaromatic compound constituted by electron rich nitrogen and sulphur atoms from molecular level, and presents powerful fluorescence in solutions, resulting its widely application in fluorescent whitening agents, fluorescent dyes and functional coordination. In this paper, we focused on designing and synthesizing a benzothiazole-functionalized naphthalimide fluorescent probe NIB for sequentially detecting CN− and Al3+ in DMSO/H2O (1:9, v/v) solution using these fluorescence properties of benzothiazole. When the fluorescent probe NIB interacts with CN−, the fluorescence of the probe is quenched, indicating that NIB can specifically respond to CN−. According to the anti-interference experiment, NIB possesses strong anti-interference ability toward CN−, and its detection limit of CN− is 6.31 × 10−7 M. Interestingly, the fluorescence of the NIB-CN − system was turned back on again by adding Al3+ ions which has good anti-interference performance against other cations. The lowest detection limit of NIB-CN − system for Al3+ is 2.85 × 10−6 M. After 10 cycles, NIB still has good sequential detection performance for CN− and Al3+, which can serve as a highly sensitive logic gate for the detection of CN− and Al3+, and the “On-Off-On” switches of this fluorescence can be observed under UV light megascopically. The mechanism of sequential detection of CN− and Al3+ was further discussed by experimental and theoretical methods. The detection mechanism is not the traditional coordination competition mechanism, but the sequential addition of CN− and Al3+ changes the aggregation mode of probe molecules in the system. In addition, the potential application of this probe was fully confirmed by the preparation of probe NIB test paper and the realization of sequential detection of CN− and Al3+ in living cells (HeLa).

Abstract:In this work, a colormetric fluorescent probe named NMH, which exhibited aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic in water/EtOH binary solvent was developed based on 2-hydrazinobenzothiazole and 6-methoxy-2-acetonaphthone for sensing hypochlorous acid (HClO) with high selectivity and sensitivity (detection limit: 1.7 nM). Also, NMH had a strong anti-interference effect and a fluorescence color change in the solution which can be seen by the"naked eye". Moreover, NMH could be applied to detect ClO − in tap water and test paper. In addition, cell imaging experiments showed that probe NMH could detect endogenous and exogenous ClO − in A549 cells successfully.

Abstract:A multifunctional fluorescent probe P based on a naphthalimide derivative for the detection of Ag+ and Hg2+ through a dual-signal was designed and characterized. P exhibited a large Stokes shift (107 nm), high selectivity, good sensitivity, and fast response time. By adjusting the testing medium and the order of reagent addition, multifunctional detection with P was achieved. The addition of Ag+ or Hg2+ to P solution in either ethanol or an ethanol–water mixture resulted in a significant quenching of fluorescence emission at 537 nm and caused a decrease in the absorbance at 440 nm accompanied by the appearance of a new absorption peak at around 340 nm, and there was an obvious color change from yellow to colorless. In contrast, the addition of other common metal ions and anions did not produce substantial spectral or color changes. The detection limit of probe P for Ag+ and Hg2+ was calculated to be 0.33 μM. The sensing mechanism was proposed and validated through MS and 1H NMR spectrometry methods. Additionally, P demonstrated the capability to recognize Ag+ and Hg2+ in living cells with satisfactory results.
