Abstract:A colorimetric sensor for nitrite ion with high selectivity and sensitivity by unmodified citrate-capped gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) is presented. Recognition of nitrite is developed on the basis of a highly specific diazo reaction between nitrite and phenylenediamine (PDA). PDA caused the Au NPs to aggregate owing to the strong covalent NH-Au bond, with a clear color change of solution from red to blue being visualized. In the presence of phosphoric acid and nitrite, the amines of PDA would readily be converted to diazo bonds, and a red solution was observed after the subsequent addition of Au suspension due to the much less strength of electrostatic interaction between the positive diazo groups and the negative citrate-capped Au NPs. With this colorimetric "light-up" method, <1 ppm of nitrite can be easily detected within 5 min at room temperature without instrumentation. Since the diazo reaction and the colorimetric response are separate, this approach features the use of pristine Au NPs in an assay where acidic environment is a necessity, making it a more convenient and cost-effective method for the sensing of nitrite when compared with those utilizing chemically modified Au NPs.

Abstract:This study demonstrates a novel strategy for colorimetric/fluorescent/surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) triple-mode sensing of nitrite based on Griess reaction modulated gold nanorods (GNRs)-Azo-gold nanoparticles (GNPs) (GNRs-Azo-GNPs) assembly. The p-aminothiophenol (PATP)-capped GNRs (GNRs@PATP) and 1,8-diaminonaphthalene (DAP)-modified GNPs (GNPs@DAP) are first synthesized through Au–S and Au–N bonds, respectively. Upon being excited at 365nm, the dispersion of GNRs-GNPs (GNRs@PATP and GNPs@DAP) emits cyan fluorescence. Next, the addition of nitrite into the GNRs-GNPs induces the formation of GNRs-Azo-GNPs assembly, resulting in the enhancement of color and decrease of fluorescence. Therefore, the GNRs-Azo-GNPs assembly can not only be used as a naked-eye indicator of nitrite changed from orange-yellow to purple, but also as a highly selective ‘‘fluorescence quenching’’ probe due to the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between azo-moiety and DAP. The limit of detection (LOD) for nitrite is 0.05μM by colorimetry and 0.01μM by fluorescence. Meanwhile, the GNRs-Azo-GNPs assembly possesses controllable core–satellites nanostructures and enables on-field SERS detection of nitrite with the LOD of 0.8nM. More importantly, the GNRs-GNPs sensing system can not only be used as a paper-based test strip for on-site fast screening of nitrite with a high sensitivity and selectivity, but also as a SERS substrate for reliable quantitative analysis of nitrite. This study offers a new method for on-site visual detection of nitrite in human urine and meat products, as well as provides a strategy for designing multi-mode sensing platform for various applications.
Sensitive and Multicolor Detection of Nitrite Based on Iodide-Mediated Etching of Gold Nanostars

Abstract:Excessive intake of nitrite is a serious risk to human health. Research on the method of detecting nitrite in food is of great significance to avoid this issue. In this work, we report a colorimetric method based on iodide-mediated etching of gold nanostars (Au NSs) for the determination of nitrite with high selectivity and sensitivity. In the presence of iodide, the strong affinity between iodide and Au NSs results in the rapid etching of Au NSs into spherical gold nanoparticles, resulting in significant changes in the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectrum and the solution color. Because nitrite can oxidize iodide under acidic conditions, the etching degree of Au NSs could be controlled by adding different nitrite concentrations to consume iodide, leading to quantitative detection of nitrite. Under the optimal conditions, nitrite exhibits a good linear relationship with the absorption ratio (A(820 nm)/A(570 nm)) in the concentration range of 2-300 mu M, with a detection limit of 0.4 mu M. The as-proposed method was successfully applied to determination of nitrite in cabbage and sausage, and the results showed good reproducibility and accuracy.

Abstract:Near-infrared fluorescent gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) were prepared by sonochemical method and applied for the selective and sensitive detection of nitrite. The fluorescence of AuNCs could be selectively quenched by nitrite, and the mechanism was discussed in detail. The fluorescence intensity decreased linearly upon the increasing concentration of nitrite in a wide range of 2.0×10−8 M to 5.0×10−5M. The detection limit was only 1.0nM (S/N=3), which was much lower than the maximum admissible concentration of 2.2μM required by the European Community. The proposed method was also applied for the determination of nitrite in real water samples. The present method exhibited excellent analytical performances, such as wide detection range, good selectivity, high sensitivity, and the applicability in neutral medium.

Abstract:In recent years, gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) have received considerable attention as optical transducers in chemo/biosensors. Herein, a facile and efficient assay for NO2- has been successfully developed based on the fluorescence quenching of AuNCs co-modified by bovine serum albumin and 3-mercaptopropionic acid (BSA/MPAAuNCs). In the presence of NO2- under acidic conditions, Fe2+ can be readily oxidized and transformed to Fe3+ which can significantly suppress the fluorescence of BSA/MPA-AuNCs via non-radiative electron-transfer mechanism. The linear range and detection limit for this system were found to be 5-30 mu M (r = 0.9975) and 0.7 mu M, respectively. Other common anions and cations showed only very minor interference with the NO2- detection. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed sensing strategy was validated by the demonstration of good performance in the determination of the amount of NO2- in ham samples, rendering it a powerful tool for the assessment of food security and water quality.

Abstract:Nitrite (NO2 –) in water and food is a potential threat to human health. The determination of nitrite content is very significant for people’s life safety. Here, 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP)-modulated silver growth on gold nanospheres (GNSs) was designed to detect nitrite. It was verified that the exposed amino groups of 4-ATP molecules on GNSs can accelerate Ag overgrowth. On the contrary, the deamination reaction of 4-ATP with nitrite can reduce the Ag overgrowth rates. 4-ATP modified on GNSs can not only increase the spectrophotometry response of nitrite with a low limit of detection (LOD = 36 nM) but also obtain a wide and flexible detection range (0–60 μM). In addition, this method showed good selectivity to nitrite. The excellent optical response, the sharp contrast between the acceleration and deceleration of Ag growth, and the customizable basic setting of the sensing ligands can provide a universal design scheme for high-performance detection methods.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) decorated bimetallic CuNi-based hollow nanoarchitecture (CNHN) are reported for the first time as a nonenzymatic sensor for the quantification of nitrite in neutral solution . The CNHN was prepared via a convenient calcining routine using the bimetallic CuNi-MOFs as a coprecursor. The unique chemical structure of hollow CNHN with high specific surface area and abundant terminal amino groups effectively avoid the aggregation of AuNPs and facilitate the subsequent adsorption of nitrite. The Au/CNHN exhibited high electrocatalytic activity towards nitrite oxidation due to the synergetic catalytic effect of AuNPs and CNHN. Chronoamperometric detection of nitrite at the Au/CNHN/GCE achieved a lower linear calibration range of 0.05 to 1.15 mM, with an LOD of 0.017 μM compared with previous reports. The proposed method obtained satisfactory recoveries for nitrite determination in practical applications, which was verified by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The prepared sensor based on Au/CNHN featured favorable selectivity and stability, which provides a promising approach for real sample analysis.

Abstract:Nitrite is a common food additive, however, its reduction product, nitrosamine, is a strong carcinogen, and hence the ultra-sensitive detection of nitrite is an effective means to prevent related cancers. In this study, different sized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were modified with P-aminothiophenol (ATP) and naphthylethylenediamine (NED). In the presence of nitrite, satellite-like AuNPs aggregates formed via the diazotization coupling reaction and the color of the system was changed by the functionalized AuNPs aggregates. The carcinogenic nitrite content could be detected by colorimetry according to the change in the system color. The linear concentration range of sodium nitrite was 0-1.0 μg mL-1 and the detection limit was determined to be 3.0 ng mL-1. Compared with the traditional method, this method has the advantages of high sensitivity, low detection limit, good selectivity and can significantly lower the naked-eye detection limit to 3.0 ng mL-1. In addition, this method is suitable for the determination of nitrite in various foods. We think this novel designed highly sensitive nitrate nanosensor holds great market potential.

Abstract:Nitrite is a typical food additive and chemical fertilizer, which could pose toxicity to human and aquatic organisms when it is excessive. Therefore, it is meaningful to develop reliable analytical methods for nitrite detection. In this work, an innovative electrochemical nitrite sensor has been fabricated using In2O3 decorated with high-activity nano-sized Au particles (Au/In2O3), which were synthesized through a two-step synthetic method combining hydrothermal reaction and deposition-precipitation, resulting in an excellent sensing performance for the nitrite. Specifically, the electrochemical nitrite sensor based on Au/In2O3 exhibits high sensitivity with a linear detection range from 10 mu M to 5 mM at pH 7.38. Additionally, the Au/In2O3 based nitrite sensor shows a detection limit of 0.46 mu M and presents impressive selectivity and stability. The extraordinary nitrite sensing performance can be attributed to the excellent catalytic activity of nano-sized Au particles and the strong interfacial reaction between Au/In2O3 and nitrite. Furthermore, theoretical calculations reveal the interfacial reactions mechanism driven by Au particles, which enhance the charge transfer between Au/In2O3 and nitrite and thus improve its electrochemical sensing performance. This work presents a novel approach towards fabricating high-performance electrochemical nitrite sensor and reveals the enhanced interfacial reaction mechanism of nano-sized Au particles.

Abstract:Colorimetric detection based on etching of plasmonic nanoparticles represents a relatively new strategy compared to that based on aggregation-based assay. It has been attracting research interest due to its advantages of rapidity, cost-effectiveness, and straightforward signaling. Boosted by the development of solution-phase synthesis, a range of shape-controlled plasmonic nanoparticles has emerged and been widely employed for colorimetric detection, including nanospheres, nanorods and nanotriangles. It has also been an opening question that which nanoparticle shapes should be chosen for a given analytical applications based on etching of plasmonic nanoparticles. This study demonstrated a colorimetric nitrite detection based on chemical etching of gold nanoparticles. Using nitrite-accelerated oxidation of iodide ion (I − ), the plasmonic nanoparticles are rapidly etched by the oxidation product iodine (I 2 ), leading to the formation of nanoparticles with etched morphology and shifted and plasmon resonance. Our results showed that gold nanosphere (AuNS) with large surface-area-to-volume (SAV) ratio and gold nanotriangle (AuNT) with sharp tips are highly active and afford fast etching in the presence of nitrite. The sensitivity of AuNS is higher than that of AuNT, and the detection limit is 4.5 μM. Gold nanorod (AuNR) exhibits a comparable detection sensitivity to the AuNT because of similar aspect ratio and SAV ratio, but the slowest etching among the three types of nanoparticles. Given the high sensitivity and stability, the AuNSs are recommended for nitrite detection, and have been applied in the detection of drinking water.

Abstract:Biofunctionalized graphene-gold nanoparticle (AuNP) hybrids were prepared using a facile approach of in situ growth, with homogeneous distribution of AuNPs on the graphene nanosheets. Hemoglobin (Hb) was immobilized on the graphene-AuNP composites to fabricate biosensors for determination of nitrite (NO2(-)). A pair of well-defined redox peaks was observed for Hb immobilized on the graphene-AuNP hybrids with a formal potential (E(0')) of -0.314 V in 0.1 M phosphate buffered saline (0.15 M NaCl, pH 7.0). The novel biosensors exhibited many advantages, such as wide linear response range (from 0.05 to 1000 µM, R(2)=0.997), low detection limit (0.01 µM, a signal to noise ratio of 3), high sensitivity (0.15 μA μM(-1) cm(-2)), and excellent selectivity. These constructed biosensors were further used for determination of nitrite in pickled radish. The results obtained were in good agreement with those using spectrophotometry based on the National Food Safety Standard (GB 5009.33-2010), which indicates that these novel and sensitive biosensors have promising application for determination of nitrite in food.

Abstract:A novel colorimetric sensor based on the interaction ability with specific analytes and peroxidase-like activity of gold nanoparticles was established in this work. Combining the high-affinity binding between bare gold nanoparticles and melamine with signal amplification procedure based on the catalytic activity of gold nanoparticles for oxidation of TMB, melamine with the concentration as low as 0.02mg/L can be easily distinguished by naked-eye observation. Such system can be adapted through carefully-controlled surface modifications of gold nanoparticles for determination of other targets.

Abstract:Nutrient pollution is of worldwide environmental and health concerns due to extensive use of nitrogen fertilizers and release of livestock waste, which induces nitrite compounds in aquatic systems. Herein a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor is developed for nitrite detection based on coupling between the plasmonic gold nanostars and the silver nanopyramid array. When nitrite is present in the assay, an azo group is formed between the 1-naphthylamine-functionalized silver nanopyramids and the 4-aminothiophenol-functionalized gold nanostars. This not only generates the SERS spectral fingerprint for selective detection, but also creates "hot spots" at the gap between the Au nanostars and the Ag nanopyramids where the azo group is located, amplifying SERS signals remarkably. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation shows a SERS enhancement factor of 4 × 1010 at the "hot spots". As a result, the SERS sensor achieves a limit of detection of 0.6 pg/mL toward nitrite in water, and enables nitrite detection in real-world river water samples. In addition, this sensor eliminates the use of any Raman reporter and any expensive molecular recognition probe such as antibody and aptamer. This highly sensitive, selective and inexpensive SERS sensor has unique advantages over colorimetric, electrochemical and fluorescent devices for small molecule detection.

Abstract:Nitrite is widely used in production and daily life, and detecting this substance has always been crucial for human health or environment monitoring. Here, a dual-emitting dye@MOF composite, EY@UiO-67-CDC-(CH3)2, has been constructed and demonstrated that this material could detect nitrite ions with highly selective and anti-interference properties. By incorporating an organic anionic dye (Eosin Y) within a cationized EY@UiO-67-CDC-(CH3)2 framework through the post-synthetic method, the composite presents an effective combination due to electrostatic attraction. It features a dual emission effect, which belongs to the blue emission of MOF at 428 nm and yellow emission of EY at 559 nm, respectively. After adding NO2 −, the fluorescence emission peaks of EY and MOF showed opposite changes due to the inner filter effect of NO2 − and MOF, as well as effective excitation of the dye's fluorescence and slight dye leakage. Therefore, Idye/IMOF is used as the detection signal value instead of absolute fluorescence intensity, effectively reducing the detection limit to 0.224 μM and improving its detection accuracy. In addition, during the detection process, the fluorescence sensor showed noticeable color changes, so a smartphone-based analytical device without additional instruments was developed for the quantitative, visual analysis of nitrite by identifying the RGB values of the fluorescence sample solution, with a detection limit of 6.74 μM. The application of the sensor visualizes nitrite detection and reduces the cost of detection, providing a feasible method for on-site detection of nitrite in water samples.

Abstract:Nitrite (NO2- ) in water and food is a potential threat to the environment, human health, and other living organisms. Therefore, the detection of NO2- is highly essential. Herein, a simple and fast colorimetric method for NO2- detection is realized based on the etching of non-modified gold nanobipyramids (Au NBPs), which results in the blue-shift of longitude local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak and obvious color changes. The NO2- was detected through this method with a linear response ranging from 2.0 to 20 mu M, a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.17 mu M and a naked eye LOD of 6.0 mu M under the optimal conditions. The LOD is sufficiently for the detection of NO2- in food in real life applications. During the detection, the morphology of Au NBPs generally changes from the bipyramid shape to the rice shape, and then to the final spheroid shape with increasing NO2- concentration. The feasibility of this method was verified in real samples with good recovery. Compared with other methods, this colorimetric sensor has advantages such as its low cost, excellent sensitivity and selectivity, and the most importantly, it can be applied to visually detect NO2- .

Furthermore, a simple, rapid, sensitive colorimetric method was developed for the detection of Ag+ ions using the as-prepared chitosan functionalized gold nanoparticles (CS-AuNPs) as a probe. The added Ag+ could first interact with the Au core to form a metallic bond, and then reduced by chitosan and deposited on the surface of AuNPs, leading to the formation of alloy Au-Ag core-shell NPs. The characteristic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak of CS-AuNPs at 520 nm was blue-shifted and the color of the solution changed from pink to orange with the Ag+ addition. Ag+ could be well determined ranging from 1.0 to 100 μM with detection limit of 0.13 μM. Additionally, this method displayed high sensitivity, selectivity and could be applied to the detection of Ag+ ions in water samples.

Abstract:An unmediated, disposable nitrite amperometric biosensor based on hemoglobin (Hb)-colloidal gold nanoparticle modified screen-printed carbon electrode (Hb-Au-SPCE) was proposed. The immobilized Hb showed a couple of quasi-reversible redox peak with a formal potential of -0.224V (vs. SCE) in 0.2 mol dm(-3) pH 5.5 NaAc-HAc buffer. The formal potential changed linearly between pH 4.0 to 9.0 with a slope of -46.4mV pH(-1). The Hb-Au-SPCE displayed a rapid amperometric response to the reduction of nitrite, which allowed to be used for the determination of nitrite with a linear range from 3.0 x 10(-7) to 7.0 x 10(-4) mol dm(-3) and a detection limit of 1.0 X 10(-7) mol dm(-3) at 3sigma. The amperometric sensor had a high sensitivity, good accuracy, and stability and is simple to use, lost-cost, rapid for the nitrite quantitative detection in practical applications.
