Abstract:In this work, a rapid, sensitive and low-cost colorimetric method for detection of quaternary ammonium surfactants using citrate-capped silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) was developed. The quaternary ammonium surfactants induce the aggregation of Ag NPs through the hydrophobic effect, which is a novel aggregation mechanism of Ag NPs. The addition of cationic surfactant results in color change of Ag NPs solution from yellow to red and finally to colorless, which is due to the broadening of the surface plasmon band. The color change was monitored using a UV–vis spectrophotometer. The LOD of different cationic surfactants was in the range of 0.5–5µM. More importantly, this detection method was successfully utilized to the disinfectant residual sample.

Abstract:Citric acid (CA) has been considered as a biomarker of urolithiasis due to its vital suppression role in urinary stone formation. Most analytical methods for detecting CA are complicated and require expensive equipment. Herein, a colorimetric method based on sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) modified AgNPs was presented for convenient and portable detection of CA in urine. By detecting the absorption of the solution color, the quantitative detection of CA can be achieved. The pH value of SDS-AgNPs, concentration of Al3+ and incubation time were optimized. Under optimal conditions, the method has the detection range of 1-10 mg/L, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.21 mg/L. Moreover, a self-developed portable CD(Compact Disk)-spectrometer (CDs) was established for detecting CA with a LOD of 0.49 mg/L featuring high simplicity, low time cost and good portability. This method was also validated with good selectivity to CA. In addition, the artificial urine samples were also detected to verify the capability of the method and CDs. The results validated that the method integrating with the CDs can be a promising platform for citric acid detection that can be further used for early screening and prognostic monitoring of urolithiasis. In-situ Detection of Cadmium with Aptamer Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles Based on Smartphone-Based Colorimetric System

Abstract:Cadmium is a heavy metal pollutant in environment with high toxicity that severely threats human health. A simple and sensitive method for rapid detection of cadmium ions in water sample is of significant importance. In this paper, a colorimetric method based on aptamer-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for specific recognition were proposed to realize Cd2+ detection. AuNPs aggregate in high-salt solutions because of the shielding of salt to electrostatic repulsion among AuNPs, while aptamers can strengthen the stability of AuNPs and avoid the aggregation. After adding Cd2+ ions, the specific interaction between aptamers and Cd2+ leads to a decrease of free aptamers, which weakens the stability of the AuNPs and results in the color change of the solution. The colorimetric change can be rapidly captured and analyzed by a self-developed smartphone-based colorimetric system (SBCS) within 10 min, which implements the quantitative detection of Cd2+. The results show that Cd2+ ions can be detected with high selectivity and sensitivity with a linear range of 2-20 mu g/L and a detection limit of 1.12 mu g/L. Compared with other methods, the proposed approach features high sensitivity, high simplicity, easy implementation and high throughout, which provides a promising means for in-situ determination of Cd2+ in practical applications.
Recyclable Colorimetric Detection of Trivalent Cations in Aqueous Media Using Zwitterionic Gold Nanoparticles

Abstract:This report describes a colorimetric assay for trivalent metal cations (M(3+)) using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-modified with oppositely charged thiols that can form intermolecular zwitterionic surfaces. Zwitterionic AuNPs (Zw-AuNPs) are stable in high-salt solutions and well-dispersed in a wide range of pH values. M(3+) including Fe(3+), Al(3+), and Cr(3+) can effectively trigger the aggregation of Zw-AuNPs by interfering with their surface potential, and aggregated AuNPs can be regenerated and recycled by removing M(3+). In our approach, the output signal can be observed by the naked eye within a micromolar (μM) concentration range. Uniquely, our assay is capable of discriminating Fe(3+) from Fe(2+), which is challenging using traditional approaches. More importantly, Zw-AuNPs can be stored stably at room temperature for a long period (3 months) with constant detection performance. Both the cost-effectiveness and the long shelf life make Zw-AuNPs ideal for detecting M(3+) in resource-poor and remote areas.

Abstract:A highly sensitive and selective method is proposed for colorimetric detection of copper ions using 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) modified silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The presence of Cu2+ induces the aggregation of 4-MBA modified AgNPs, this resulting in a color change from bright yellow to purple. The concentration of Cu2+ could be quantified by naked eyes or a UV–vis spectrometer. The absorbance ratio (A560nm/A393nm) is linear with the concentration of Cu2+ ranging from 1×10−7M to 1×10−4M with a coefficient of 0.998. The detection limit is as low as 2.5×10−8M. The proposed method could be successfully applied to determine Cu2+ in drinking water.

Abstract:The oil and gas industry plays a vital role in the global economy. The production process has several critical conditions and can expose metals to corrosion. Surfactants like the quaternary ammonium salt Benzyldimethyldodecylammonium Bromide (BDAC) are currently used to prevent corrosions; classical methods for determining these surfactants have problems in saline samples and usually present high costs. In this context, spectroscopic techniques become an excellent alternative for quaternary ammonium salts detection. Here, a SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) sensor based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) synthesized through chemical reduction was used as an alternative method for BDAC detection. We detected BDAC at low concentrations in water solutions: at 5 to 30 ppm (1.47 × 10-5 mol L-1 to 8.82 × 10-5 mol L-1); and had the vibration attempt attribute analyzed. A new study of quaternary ammonium compounds using AuNPs and SERS with a different, easy, and repeatable approach to spectra acquisition is presented and shows to be a promising method applied in quaternary ammonium salt compounds detection for the oil and gas industry.

Abstract:A novel colorimetric nanosensor based on stable aggregation of gold nanoparticle (AuNP) triggered by carbon quantum dots (CDs) has been developed for detection of Ag+ ions in the presence of glutathione (GSH). First, the nanosensor is constructed by assembling carbon quantum dots (CDs) "shell" on the surface of gold nanoparticle (AuNP), resulting in the generation of the stable aggregation of CDs/AuNP. The solution color changes from red to blue. In the absence of target, the addition of GSH into the aggregated CDs/AuNP exhibits the dispersion state corresponding to the color change from blue to red, because GSH can prefer to binding with AuNP comparing with CDs. On the contrary, the aggregated CDs/AuNP has been again observed with the color change from red to blue after the target analyte Ag+ ions are added. Therefore, the new sensing strategy based on "aggregation dispersion-aggregation" or "blue-red-blue" mode can be established for Ag+ detection. This method can selectively detect Ag+ in a linear range from 100 to 4000 nM with the detection limit of 50 nM. It is successfully applied to determination of Ag+ ions in tap water and lake water. Our study will expand a new sight for application of CDs in sensors, environmental monitoring and preparation of carbon-based nanomaterials.

Abstract:In this study, a novel colorimetric method for rapid, sensitive and low-cost detection of glyphosate was developed using cysteamine-stabilized gold nanoparticles (CS-AuNPs). The CS-AuNPs could be aggregated easily in the presence of glyphosate through electrostatic interaction in acidic medium, resulting in a shift in the surface plasmon band and a consequent color change from red to blue (or purple). Therefore, the content of glyphosate could be determined by monitoring with the naked eyes or a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The detection limit of the present method for glyphosate was 5.88 × 10−8 M, with the linear range of 0.500–7.00 μM. The proposed method is a promising approach for on-site screening of glyphosate content in environmental water samples without using any costly instruments.

Abstract:A new method has been proposed to realize the visual detection of Cr 3+ using 4-nitrobenzenethiol (4-NBT) and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) modified silver nanoparticles ( AgNPs ). The presence of Cr 3+ induces the aggregation of AgNPs through cooperative metal–ligand interaction, resulting in a color change from bright yellow to purple. Consequently, Cr 3+ could be monitored by colorimetric response of AgNPs by a UV-Vis spectrophotometer or even naked eyes. We firstly used ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a masking agent to selectively detect Cr 3+, and other metal ions have little influence on the Cr 3+– AgNPs system. The cofunctionalized AgNPs exhibited a highly sensitive detection limit of Cr 3+, which is as low as 5 × 10-9 mol L-1, and the absorbance ratio (A600nm/A387nm) is linear with the concentration of Cr 3+ ranging from 5 × 10-9 mol L-1 to 2 × 10-6 mol L-1 with a coefficient of 0.993. Particularly, the sensor has been further evaluated to monitor the concentration of Cr 3+ in drinking water, the recovery was in good agreement with those obtained by ICP-MS, indicating that this proposed method is successfully applied in real samples.

Abstract:An electrochemical biosensor was proposed utilizing an improved amplification strategy for the rapid detection of sulfamethazine (as a model target) in aquatic environments. In this competitive immunoassay, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-capped gold nanoparticles (CTAB-AuNPs) were used as a signal amplifier and electrode matrix and coated with an antigen-antibody (Cag-Ab(1)) specific binding system as a recognition unit for the target compound. In addition, silver nanoparticle labels were functionalized with dendritic fibrous nanosilica (DFNS@AgNPs) and decorated onto chitosan/single walled carbon nanohorn (CS/SWCNH)-modified glass carbon electrodes (GCEs), which improved the electron transfer rate and increased the surface area, enabling more coating antigens to be captured. Under acidic conditions, massive amounts of the Ag+ bound to the surface of the AuNPs dissolved, and consequently, formed Ag+@CTAB-AuNP complexes, which resulted in a distinctly improved peroxidase-like activity and enhanced current response. Furthermore, the destroyed Ab(1)-Ab(2)-DFNS conjugation greatly decreased the impedance, bringing about the amplification of the electrochemical signals. After optimization of the parameters, the proposed approach exhibited excellent performance, including good sensitivity (LOD, 0.0655 ng/mL) and satisfactory accuracy (recoveries, 79.02%-118.39%; CV, 3.18%-9.82%), which indicates the great potential of this strategy for the rapid detection of trace pollutants in the environments.

Abstract:A colorimetric sensor for the detection of citrate ions is reported here using dual-surfactant-capped Ag nanoparticles (dual-AgNP sensor). A mixture of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and a newly prepared gemini nonionic (GFEO) surfactant was used as a capping agent to synthesize dual-surfactant-capped Ag NPs for selective and sensitive citrate detection. The GFEO surfactant was designed with a specific chemical structure to provide strong binding with citrate for selective and sensitive detection. The developed dual-AgNP sensor showed extremely high selectivity toward citrate even in the presence of interfering species. Quantitative detection of citrate was carried out based on the changes in UV–vis absorbance and naked-eye readout. After optimization, the dual-AgNP sensor exhibited a visual detection limit of 25 μM and a low limit of detection of 4.05 nM with a UV–vis spectrometer. The developed citrate sensor performed well with a urine sample, with a high recovery of 99.6%. The prepared solution sensor was constructed on a paper-based analytical device.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:A convenient colorimetric sensor based on anti-aggregation of citrate-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) is demonstrated for thiocyanate (SCN−) sensing. The citrate-capped AuNPs aggregated readily in the presence of sulfuric acid, leading to a color change from red to blue. This particle aggregation could be suppressed by SCN−, which had strong protective effect on the gold colloid. The thiocyanate recognition suffers insignificant interference from most of common ions. With this strategy, 1μM of SCN− can be recognized within 5min by naked-eye observation. This simple, selective, and sensitive approach can be potentially applied for SCN− assays in environmental aqueous samples.

Abstract:Gold colloid changes its color when the internanoparticle distance changes. On the basis of analyte-induced aggregation or disaggregation behavior of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), versatile colorimetric assays have been developed for measuring various kinds of analytes including proteins, DNA, small molecules, and ions. Traditional read-out signals, which are usually measured by a spectrometer or naked eyes, are based on the averaged extinction properties of a bulk solution containing billions of nanoparticles. Averaged extinction property of a large amount of nanoparticles diminished the contribution from rare events when the analyte concentration was low, thus resulting in limited detection sensitivity. Instead of measuring the averaged optical property from bulk colloid, in the present work, we proposed a digital counterpart of the colorimetric assay by imaging and counting individual AuNPs. This method quantified the analyte concentration with the number percentage of large-sized AuNPs aggregates, which were digitally counted with surface plasmon resonance microscopy (SPRM), a plasmonic imaging technique recently developed by us and other groups. SPRM was able to identify rare AuNPs aggregates despite their small population and greatly improved the detection sensitivity as demonstrated by two model systems based on analyte-induced aggregation and disaggregation, respectively. Furthermore, besides plasmonic AuNPs, SPRM is also suitable for imaging and counting nonplasmonic nanomaterials such as silica and metal oxide with poor extinction properties. It is thus anticipated that the present digitized assay holds a great potential for expanding the colorimetric assay to broad categories of nonplasmonic nanoparticles.
Gold Nanoparticles Based Digital Color Analysis for Quinidine Detection

Abstract:In this contribution,we developed a novel digital color analysis of gold nanoparticles(AuNPs) for pharmaceutical detection by choosing quinidine as an example.It was found that the color of AuNPs colloid solution changed from red to blue in the presence of different concentrations of quinidine,and the color information of each solution could be digitalized with tricolor(RGB) system.Under the optimum conditions,the R value of the solution was found to be linear with the natural logarithm of concentration of quinidine in the range of 112 384 nmol/L.This method has the advantages of rapid,economical and simple,and can serve as a potential alternative to traditional spectrophotometry for practical use.

Abstract:A convenient and sensitive dual-signal visualization method is constructed for detection of trivalent chromium ions (Cr3+) based on fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) and glutathione-modified gold nanoparticles (GSH-Au NPs). The fluorescence of CDs can be quenched by GSH-Au NPs due to the inner filter effect. Cr3+ induces aggregation of GSH-Au NPs because of the coordination with GSH on the surface of Au NPs, leading to the red shift of surface plasmon resonance absorption of Au NPs that provides a "turn-on" fluorescence and colorimetric assay for Cr3+. The fluorescence/colorimetric dual signal detection shows high sensitivity for Cr3+ with wide detection linear ranges (0.5-70 μM for fluorescence detection and 2-50 μM for colorimetric detection) and low detection limits (0.31 μM for fluorescence detection and 0.30 μM for colorimetric detection). Besides, the method has high selectivity for Cr3+ and can be used for detection of Cr3+ in lake water and tap water samples, showing great potential for visual detection of environmental Cr3+.
Ultrasensitive colorimetric detection of amoxicillin based on Tris-HCl-induced aggregation of gold nanoparticles

Abstract:An ultrasensitive colorimetric aptasensor for the detection of amoxicillin (AMO) based on the Tris-HCl buffer-induced aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was developed. The AuNPs were aggregated by the addition of Tris-HCl buffer. The adsorption of the aptamer on the AuNP surface increased its negative charge density, leading to the enhancement of the electrostatic repulsion between the nanoparticles, thus protecting AuNPs from aggregation in the Tris-HCl buffer. However, the specific binding of the aptamer with AMO induced conformational changes in the aptamer, which reduced the adsorption of the aptamer on the AuNP surface, diminishing the protective effect of the aptamer. This resulted in the aggregation of AuNPs by Tris-HCl buffer, and consequently, color change of the solution containing AuNPs from red to blue. Under optimized conditions, a linear relationship between the absorbance ratio variation (ΔA680/A520) and the AMO concentration was observed in the concentration range of 0.1-125 nM, with a detection limit of 67 pM. The developed biosensor exhibited high selectivity toward AMO. Moreover, this strategy was successfully applied to the detection of AMO in lake water samples. Thus, the present aptasensor is a promising alternative for the simple and ultrasensitive detection of AMO in the environment.

Abstract:The introduction of surfactants to stabilize colloidal citrate-reduced gold nanoparticles (prevent aggregation) is usually used in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. However, the surfactants have many drawbacks for SERS applications, such as increasing the SERS background and blocking surface active sites. Here, we develop a surfactant-free method to stabilize colloidal cit-AuNPs based on alkali regulation, and this method can prevent gold nanoparticle aggregation under different harsh treatments, including ligand modification, centrifugation-based washing/enrichment, and salt addition. The SERS spectra, density functional theory simulation, and ζ potentials of cit-AuNPs indicate that the stability of enhanced cit-AuNPs under alkaline conditions is attributed to both the increased negative charge density (by ∼6 times from pH 7 to 12) and the molecular configuration on the metal surface. Compared with surfactant-based methods, this method can well maintain the inherent optical and interface properties of nanoparticles, avoid the SERS background, and avoid blocking of the surface active site due to the presence of surfactants. This method will enable AuNPs to have a wide range of applications in areas such as highly sensitive SERS sensors.

Abstract:Visually colorimetric sensing of hazardous metallic ions based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has been considered a facile, on-site, and reliable monitoring route, yet the improvement of detection limit, as well as environmental pH tolerance, is still needed. Herein, we present an integrated probe design based on functionalizing AuNP cores with carbon quantum dots (CQD) as colorimetric probes for tracing Cu 2+ ions with a limit of detection as low as 18.7 nM. Improved detection selectivity was elucidated with the reduction in thiol groups bound between CQD decorations and AuNP probes initiated by oxidation of Cu 2+ ion analytes, thus separating crossly connected probes, depending on tracing Cu 2+ concentrations. Moreover, distributed CQDs with negative potentials allowed the stabilization of dispersed AuNPs against re-aggregation, which caused the gradual morphological transition from aggregated features to dispersed states in microscopic view, and eventually, reflected the gradual color change from red to purple-red. Abstract:A simple, rapid, sensitive and field-portable colorimetric technique for the determination of Cr(III) in aqueous solution based on an aggregation-induced color transition of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has been developed. AuNPs were first functionalized with a dithiocarbamate-modified N-benzyl-4-(pyridin-4-ylmethyl)aniline ligand (BP-DTC). Chelation of Cr(III) by several of these ligands, bound to different nanoparticles, led to nanoparticle aggregation in solution. This gave rise to a color change from wine-red to blue that was discernible by the naked eye and an easily measurable alteration in the extinction spectrum of the particles. The method could be used to determine Cr(III) with a detection limit of 31ppb. Furthermore, selective detection of trace Cr(III) in aqueous solution in the presence of 12 other transition metal ions has been achieved. Toward the goal of practical applications, the sensor has been further evaluated with a view to monitoring Cr(III) in nutritional supplements and the blood of diabetes patients and also applied in the indirect determination of Cr(VI) in waste water.

Abstract:Globally, over 200 million people are at risk of exposure to high levels of arsenic due to increasing environmental pollution; thus, there is high demand for detection methods to monitor arsenic contamination in the natural environment. In this study, we developed a cost-effective method for detecting arsenite [As(III)] ions using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-coated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and Tris. Positively charged Tris molecules induce aggregation of AuNPs by neutralizing the negative charge of SDS; however, this is prevented by the presence of As(III), which has a high affinity for AuNPs. This proposed method is able to detect 5 parts per billion (ppb) and 1.85 ppb of As(III) through naked eye and spectrophotometric measurements, respectively. Furthermore, a chitosan-based lateral flow (LF) strip was devised to enhance the visual signal intensity by concentrating AuNPs on its test zone, since AuNPs of lower concentration were more effective for detecting low As(III) concentrations. As a result, As(III) was detected at 500 parts per trillion (ppt) without any interference from other metal ions, which is a 10-fold improvement from solution-based assays. Importantly, the colorimetric signal amplification strategy (using the chitosan-based LF strip) is versatile and can be applied to many other AuNP- or nanomaterial-based technologies. The proposed system enables the detection of As(III) in facility-limited or point-of-care settings, making it ideal for use in underdeveloped countries because it requires a small sample volume (approximately 20–30 μL) with a small amount of AuNPs, and takes only 10 min to generate colorimetric results.
