Abstract:Precise control of an open quantum system is critical to quantum information processing but is challenging due to inevitable interactions between the quantum system and the environment. We demonstrated experimentally a type of dynamically corrected gates using only bounded-strength pulses on the nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. The infidelity of quantum gates caused by a nuclear-spin bath is reduced from being the second order to the sixth order of the noise-to-control-field ratio, which offers greater efficiency in reducing infidelity. The quantum gates have been protected to the limit essentially set by the spin-lattice relaxation time T1. Our work marks an important step towards fault-tolerant quantum computation in realistic systems.

Abstract:Diamond is a promising platform for quantum information processing as it can host highly coherent qubits that could allow for the construction of large quantum registers. A prerequisite for such devices is a coherent interaction between nitrogen vacancy (NV) electron spins. Entanglement between dipolar-coupled NV spin pairs has been demonstrated, but with a limited entanglement fidelity and its error sources have not been characterized. Here, we design and implement a robust, easy to implement entangling gate between NV spins in diamond and quantify the influence of multiple error sources on the gate performance. Experimentally, we demonstrate a record gate fidelity of $F=(96.0 \pm 2.5)$ % under ambient conditions. Our identification of the dominant errors paves the way towards NV-NV gates beyond the error correction threshold.

Abstract:Fault-tolerant quantum computation requires low physical-qubit gate errors. Many approaches exist to reduce gate errors, including both hardware- and control-optimization strategies. Dynamically corrected gates are designed to cancel specific errors and offer the potential for high-fidelity gates, but they have yet to be implemented in singlet-triplet spin qubits in semiconductor quantum dots, due in part to the stringent control constraints in these systems. In this work, we experimentally implement dynamically corrected gates designed to mitigate hyperfine noise in a singlet-triplet qubit realized in a Si/SiGe double quantum dot. The corrected gates reduce infidelities by about a factor of three, resulting in gate fidelities above 0.99 for both identity and Hadamard gates. The gate performances depend sensitively on pulse distortions, and their specific performance reveals an unexpected distortion in our experimental setup.

Abstract:Quantum computation provides great speedup over its classical counterpart for certain problems. One of the key challenges for quantum computation is to realize precise control of the quantum system in the presence of noise. Control of the spin-qubits in solids with the accuracy required by fault-tolerant quantum computation under ambient conditions remains elusive. Here, we quantitatively characterize the source of noise during quantum gate operation and demonstrate strategies to suppress the effect of these. A universal set of logic gates in a nitrogen-vacancy centre in diamond are reported with an average single-qubit gate fidelity of 0.999952 and two-qubit gate fidelity of 0.992. These high control fidelities have been achieved at room temperature in naturally abundant (13)C diamond via composite pulses and an optimized control method.
High-Fidelity Entangling Gates for Electron and Nuclear Spin Qubits in Diamond

Abstract:Motivated by the recent experimental progress in exploring the use of a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond as a quantum computing platform, we propose schemes for fast and high-fidelity entangling gates on this platform. Using both analytical and numerical calculations, we demonstrate that synchronization effects between resonant and off-resonant transitions may be exploited such that spin-flip errors due to strong driving may be eliminated by adjusting the gate time or the driving field. This allows for fast, high fidelity entangling operations between the electron spin and one or several nuclear spins. We investigate a two-qubit system where the NV center is comprised of a $^{15}$N atom and a qubit-qutrit system for the case of a $^{14}$N atom. In both cases, we predict a complete suppression of off-resonant driving errors for two-qubit gates when addressing the NV electron spin conditioned on states of nuclear spins of the nitrogen atom of the defect. Additionally, we predict fidelities $>0.99$ for multi-qubit gates when including the surrounding $^{13}$C atoms in the diamond lattice in the conditioned logic.

Abstract:The ability to sense and control nuclear spins near solid-state defects might enable a range of quantum technologies. Dynamically Decoupled Radio-Frequency (DDRF) control offers a high degree of design flexibility and long electron-spin coherence times. However, previous studies considered simplified models and little is known about optimal gate design and fundamental limits. Here, we develop a generalised DDRF framework that has important implications for spin sensing and control. Our analytical model, which we corroborate by experiments on a single NV center in diamond, reveals the mechanisms that govern the selectivity of gates and their effective Rabi frequencies, and enables flexible detuned gate designs. We apply these insights to numerically show a 60x sensitivity enhancement for detecting weakly coupled spins and study the optimisation of quantum gates in multi-qubit registers. These results advance the understanding for a broad class of gates and provide a toolbox for application-specific design, enabling improved quantum control and sensing.

Towards quantum error correction with two-body gates for quantum registers based on nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

Abstract:Color centers in diamond provide a possible hardware for quantum computation, where the most basic quantum information processing unit are nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers, each in contact with adjacent carbon nuclear spins. With specifically tailored dynamical decoupling sequences, it is possible to execute selective, high-fidelity two-body gates between the electron spin of the NV center and a targeted nuclear spin. In this work, we present a method to determine the optimal execution time that balances the trade-off between fidelity and execution speed for gates generated by adaptive XY sequences. With these optimized gates, we use the nuclear spin environment as a code space for quantum error correction within a color center register.

Abstract:Spins associated to solid-state colour centers are a promising platform for investigating quantum computation and quantum networks. Recent experiments have demonstrated multi-qubit quantum processors, optical interconnects, and basic quantum error correction protocols. One of the key open challenges towards larger-scale systems is to realize high-fidelity universal quantum gates. In this work, we design and demonstrate a complete high-fidelity gate set for the two-qubit system formed by the electron and nuclear spin of a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. We use gate set tomography (GST) to systematically optimise the gates and demonstrate single-qubit gate fidelities of up to $99.999(1)\%$ and a two-qubit gate fidelity of $99.93(5) \%$. Our gates are designed to decouple unwanted interactions and can be extended to other electron-nuclear spin systems. The high fidelities demonstrated provide new opportunities towards larger-scale quantum processing with colour-center qubits.

Abstract:We experimentally realize a universal set of single-bit and two-bit geometric quantum gates by adiabatically controlling solid-state spins in a diamond defect. Compared with the nonadiabatic approach, the adiabatic scheme for geometric quantum computation offers a unique advantage of inherent robustness to parameter variations, which is explicitly demonstrated in our experiment by showing that the single-bit gates remain unchanged when the driving field amplitude varies by a factor of 2 or the detuning fluctuates in a range comparable to the inverse of the gate time. The reported adiabatic control technique and its convenient implementation offer a paradigm for achieving quantum computation through robust geometric quantum gates, which is important for quantum information systems with parameter-fluctuation noise such as those from the inhomogeneous coupling or the spectral diffusion.

Abstract:Quantum computing offers the potential to revolutionize information processing by exploiting the principles of quantum mechanics. Among the diverse quantum bit (qubit) technologies, silicon-based semiconductor spin qubits have emerged as a promising contender due to their potential scalability and compatibility with existing semiconductor technologies. In this paper, the latest developments of spin qubits in gate-defined semiconducting nanostructures made of silicon and germanium, starting from the basic properties of electron and hole states in group-IV semiconductors, are reviewed. Specifically, various nanostructures that exploit their unique microscopic properties for qubit implementations, elaborating on the advances and challenges in experiments, are discussed. Strategies for enhancing qubit performance, such as designing new nanostructures and identifying suitable operating points, particularly those involving the valleys of electron qubits and the heavy-hole-light-hole mixing of hole qubits, are also highlighted. This comprehensive review thus provides valuable insights into the current state-of-the-art in semiconductor quantum computing and suggests avenues for future research. Silicon-based spin quantum bits (qubits) have emerged as a promising platform for large-scale quantum computing due to their compatibility with the semiconductor fabrication technology. Abstract:Experimental realization of a universal set of quantum logic gates is the central requirement for the implementation of a quantum computer. In an 'all-geometric' approach to quantum computation, the quantum gates are implemented using Berry phases and their non-Abelian extensions, holonomies, from geometric transformation of quantum states in the Hilbert space. Apart from its fundamental interest and rich mathematical structure, the geometric approach has some built-in noise-resilience features. On the experimental side, geometric phases and holonomies have been observed in thermal ensembles of liquid molecules using nuclear magnetic resonance; however, such systems are known to be non-scalable for the purposes of quantum computing. There are proposals to implement geometric quantum computation in scalable experimental platforms such as trapped ions, superconducting quantum bits and quantum dots, and a recent experiment has realized geometric single-bit gates in a superconducting system. Here we report the experimental realization of a universal set of geometric quantum gates using the solid-state spins of diamond nitrogen-vacancy centres. These diamond defects provide a scalable experimental platform with the potential for room-temperature quantum computing, which has attracted strong interest in recent years. Our experiment shows that all-geometric and potentially robust quantum computation can be realized with solid-state spin quantum bits, making use of recent advances in the coherent control of this system.

Abstract:In order to achieve reliable quantum-information processing results, we need to protect quantum gates along with the qubits from decoherence. Here we demonstrate experimentally on a nitrogen-vacancy system that by using a continuous-wave dynamical decoupling method, we might not only prolong the coherence time by about 20 times but also protect the quantum gates for the duration of the controlling time. This protocol shares the merits of retaining the superiority of prolonging the coherence time and at the same time easily combining with quantum logic tasks. This method can be useful in tasks where the duration of quantum controlling exceeds far beyond the dephasing time.

Abstract:In recent years, solid-state spin systems have emerged as promising candidates for quantum information processing. Prominent examples are the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, phosphorus dopants in silicon (Si:P), rare-earth ions in solids, and VSi-centers in silicon-carbide. The Si:P system has demonstrated that its nuclear spins can yield exceedingly long spin coherence times by eliminating the electron spin of the dopant. For NV centers, however, a proper charge state for storage of nuclear spin qubit coherence has not been identified yet. Here, we identify and characterize the positively charged NV center as an electron-spin-less and optically inactive state by utilizing the nuclear spin qubit as a probe. We control the electronic charge and spin utilizing nanometer scale gate electrodes. We achieve a lengthening of the nuclear spin coherence times by a factor of 4. Surprisingly, the new charge state allows switching of the optical response of single nodes facilitating full individual addressability.
Quantum electrometry of non-volatile space charges in diamond

Abstract:The microscopic electric environment surrounding a spin defect in a wide-bandgap semiconductor plays a determining role in the spin coherence and charge stability of a given qubit and has an equally important role in defining the electrical properties of the host material. Here, we use electrometry of quantum defects embedded within a diamond to observe stable, micron-scale space charge distributions formed from trapped photogenerated charges. These space charges grow under optical illumination in the presence of an applied electric field, eventually screening the applied electric field entirely over a spatial extent of tens of microns due to charge carrier drift and capture. Our measurements suggest that these space charge fields originate from widely-dispersed spatial configurations of nitrogen charges. Our results have important consequences for electrometry and photoelectric detection using qubits in wide-bandgap semiconductors.

Performance of quantum registers in diamond in the presence of spin impurities

Abstract:The Nitrogen Vacancy Center in diamond coupled to addressable surrounding nuclear spins forms a versatile building block for future quantum technologies. While previous activities focused on sensing with only a single or very few spins in operation, recently multi-qubit registers have been successfully implemented for quantum information processing. Further progress requires a detailed understanding of the performance of quantum protocols for consecutive gate operations and thus, beyond established treatments for relaxation and dephasing. Here, we provide such a theoretical analysis for a small spin registers with up to four spins built out of NV and environmental constituents in presence of ensembles of interacting impurity spins. Adapting a cluster correlation expansion, we predict coherence properties as well as fidelities for GHZ- and Bell-gate operations also in presence of decoupling pulses. The influence of the volume density and the geometry of the spin-bath consisting of the substitutional nitrogen- or $^{13}C$ atoms are also taken into account.

Abstract:Solid-state quantum registers consisting of optically active electron spins with nearby nuclear spins are promising building blocks for future quantum technologies. For electron spin-1 registers, dynamical decoupling (DD) quantum gates have been developed that enable the precise control of multiple nuclear spin qubits. However, for the important class of electron spin-1/2 systems, this control method suffers from intrinsic selectivity limitations, resulting in reduced nuclear spin gate fidelities. Here we demonstrate improved control of single nuclear spins by an electron spin-1/2 using Dynamically Decoupled Radio Frequency (DDRF) gates. We make use of the electron spin-1/2 of a diamond tin-vacancy center, showing high-fidelity single-qubit gates, single-shot readout, and spin coherence beyond a millisecond. The DD control is used as a benchmark to observe and control a single carbon-13 nuclear spin. Using the DDRF control method, we demonstrate improved control on that spin. In addition, we find and control an additional nuclear spin that is insensitive to the DD control method. Using these DDRF gates, we show entanglement between the electron and the nuclear spin with 72(3)% state fidelity. Our extensive simulations indicate that DDRF gate fidelities well in excess are feasible. Finally, we employ time-resolved photon detection during readout to quantify the hyperfine coupling for the electron's optically excited state. Our work provides key insights into the challenges and opportunities for nuclear spin control in electron spin-1/2 systems, opening the door to multi-qubit experiments on these promising qubit platforms.

Abstract:Constructing compact quantum circuits for universal quantum gates on solid-state systems is crucial for quantum computing. We present some compact quantum circuits for a deterministic solid-state quantum computing, including the CNOT, Toffoli, and Fredkin gates on the diamond nitrogen-vacancy centers confined inside cavities, achieved by some input-output processes of a single photon. Our quantum circuits for these universal quantum gates are simple and economic. Moreover, additional electron qubits are not employed, but only a single-photon medium. These gates have a long coherent time. We discuss the feasibility of these universal solid-state quantum gates, concluding that they are feasible with current technology.
