Abstract:Three polyamine fixing agents with increasing molecular weights (m.w.), PA-Lw, PA-Mw, and PA-Hw, were used to treat a deinked pulp at three different levels of chemical dosage. The objective was to elucidate whether the retention mechanism of colloidal substances (CS) onto fibers by a fixing agent is different when the dosage is different. The results show that, for the polyamine with the lowest molecular weight (PA-Lw), it performed in the colloidal fixation mode over a wide range of dosage, but re-dispersion of CS took place in the pulp when its dosage was increased to a level high enough but still beneath the charge reversal point. For the polyamine with the highest m.w. (PA-Hw), CS re-dispersion was not observed over the whole dosage range, but a small part of the colloidal agglomeration coexisted with colloidal fixation even when the dosage was very low. For the polyamine with the middle m.w. (PA-Mw), both CS re-dispersion and colloidal agglomeration were observed. This study showed that if one wants to determine the dosage of a fixing agent during CS control better, both CS removal ratio and CS agglomeration behavior should be considered.

Abstract:The influences of the chemical agents,oxidative modification and coupling treatment for carbon fiber dispersion and binding properties were investigated.The fiber suface morphology was analyzed by the image of fiber analyzer,and the fiber dispersion was reflected by the Zeta potential of slurry,absorbency and digital pictures.The functional paper were prepared with a different ratio of carbon fiber and pulp,and the physical strength and volume resistivity of the paper were tested.The results showed that: the effect of tween-80 was the best in four kinds of chemial agents,coupling modification significantly improved the dispersion performance of carbon fiber,superior than oxidative modification,the increase of the dispersion would enhance the conductivity and physical strength of functional paper,and 30% content of carbon fiber achieved the "percolation threshold" of conductive material.

Abstract:Through the detection and analysis of the solution by zeta potential, absorbency and digital photos, the alkaline pretreatment and surface treatment of different reagents were investigated on the effects of the dispersion properties of carbon fiber. The physical strength and volume resistivity of paper consist of carbon fiber and plant fiber pulp. The results showed that alkaline pretreatment could improve the dispersion of carbon fiber to a certain extent, Tween-80 and CPAM reagents could further significantly increase the dispersion and tensile index and electrical conductivity of carbon fiber paper. However, their dispersion mechanism were different. Tween-80 realized the fiber dispersion by reducing the solid-liquid surface tension and improving the wetting ability of water on the fiber; and CPAM formed a large three-dimensional network to prevent the movement and clusterging of carbon fiber together, and to improve the dispersion of the carbon fiber in the pulp.

Abstract:The influences of the oxidative modification, coupling treatment and dispersing agent for carbon fiber dispersion and binding properties were investigated, and the relationships of different ratio of carbon fiber with the physical strength and electrical conductivity of the paper were analyzed. Meanwhile fiber surface morphology, zeta potential and absorbance slurry were tested. Abstract:The sizing effect with anionic rosin emulsion/PAC on recycled pulp was investigated,and the main influencing factor such as the content of anionic rosin emulsion,PAC and CS were discussed according paper performance.As results that showed that the imbibing performance of the paper displayed a single down trend with the content of anionic rosin emulsion increasing and showed the trend first drop then increase with the dosage of PAC and CS.The reason was that when the dosages of PAC and CS were too much,their positive charge had rejected effect and reduced the sizing effect.Tear index of paper showed the trend first increase then steady.However the tensile index following with sizing displayed complex change,the reason was that internal sizing would affect the bonding strength of the fiber.

Abstract:To extend the lifetime of wall-paintings in the Mogao Grottoes, various kinds of conservation materials (for example, PVA, acrylic acid and B72) and techniques (for example, adhesion, consolidation and surface coating) have been used in the past decades. However, as a basic concern, it still remains obscured how the deterioration mechanism of wall-paintings changes after conservation materials are applied. In this contribution, an assumption was advanced to clarify this mechanism. Different layers in the wall-paintings have different physical properties, such as thermal and moisture expansions, which may be altered after the conservation materials penetrate into the paintings. The differences of these properties may cause stress between the layers in the paintings with the change of environmental factors, which will finally lead to deterioration of wall-paintings. A series of experiments were performed to determine thermal and moisture expansion properties of consolidated wall-painting plasters. The impact of the conservation materials on the expansion properties of wall-painting plasters was quantified, in order to evaluate these materials. Consistency of experimental conclusions and conservation experience validated this hypothetical mechanism.

Abstract:In this work, a new hydrogel designed for water-sensitive artifacts especially for China Dunhuang mural was synthesized to remove the ineffective conservation materials on mural surface. The reversible rate of each conservation material was measured based on hydrogel cleaning. It was found that the gel filled with cleaning agents showed excellent performance over the empty gel. Besides, it was more environment-friendly without mechanical damage to the sensitive surface and easier to control the cleaning process compared with pure organic solvent cleaning. 3D microscopic system confirmed the cleaning effects both visually and quantitatively. The best “conservation material-cleaning agent” pairs and their reversible rates were obtained, which were “ParaloidB72---P-xylene+ethyl acetate---80%”, “polyvinyl acetate---P-xylene+ethyl acetate---40%”, “acrylic---P-xylene---44%”, “silicone---P-xylene+1-Pentanol---55%”. It was also found that the reversible rates of the conservation materials declined after aging.
A Comparative Study of the Performance of Handmade Papers Used for Mounting in China, Korea, and Japan

Abstract:The properties of handmade paper used for mounting and conservation of paintings and calligraphy on paper is crucial to the quality and lifespan of such objects. Mounting papers from China, Korea, and Japan vary greatly in performance due to different papermaking methods and fibre materials. In this study, eight types of handmade paper widely used in China, Korea, and Japan were selected for comprehensive comparative analysis investigating their pH as well as optical, mechanical, and ageing properties. The study showed that traditional hanji, improved hanji, and thin Mino paper made of pure kozo fibres performed best in terms of mechanical properties. Among the additives mixed with kozo fibres, clam shell powder was identified as a substance that improves pH and stability of optical properties. Xuan paper Mianliao was found to be a suitable material for mounting hand scrolls and hanging scrolls due to its softness and ageing properties. Traditional hanji, improved hanji, and thin Mino paper are less flexible than xuan paper Mianliao and are considered more suitable for uses other than for mounting scrolls. This study will provide a reference for improving the quality of handmade paper and a theoretical basis for the selection of such papers for the conservation of paintings and calligraphy on paper.

Abstract:Paper cultural relics, with the great historic and artistic value, experience aging and degradation during their long-term preservation. The degradation of paper involves various chemical reactions with complicated mechanisms due to the multiple components of paper itself and the complex factors that promote paper aging process. Therefore, it is of great importance to deeply understand the chemical essence and scientific principle of paper degradation, so as to propose the effective conservation methods for paper relics. This review summarized the chemical mechanisms of acidic, alkaline and oxidative degradation of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin in paper, and discussed the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that affect paper degradation systematically. Moreover, the interaction among the three types of degradation routes was analyzed for the first time, and the evolution of kinetic models for paper degradation was introduced to evaluate the durability and expected lifetime of paper. On this basis, the advantages and disadvantages of remedial and preventive conservation methods for paper relics are summarized, and the fundamental scientific principles was prospected to guide the further development of paper conservation methods.

Abstract:Creases and folds in Chinese paintings and calligraphies scrolls are hard to avoid during the handling in storage and exhibitions. The creases are usually reinforced with paper strips in the conservation treatment. However, adhering the paper strips will create unwanted secondary creases along the joining edge on the painting scrolls after repeated openings and rolling. This study proposes a new consolidant, bacteria cellulose (BC), for the conservation of creased Chinese painting scrolls. Different tests were carried out and the results showed that BC was a better approach than the traditional paper strip reinforcement method. The method not only had an excellent effect on conserving the creased artwork on Xuan-paper aesthetically, but also improved its physical properties.

Abstract:To delay acidification and deterioration during natural aging, deacidification and reinforcement of paper manuscripts have been the most important technologies to prolong the life of objects. Herein, a novel approach for the conservation of paper manuscripts is proposed using chitosan nanoparticles as Lewis base that leads to both deacidification and strengthening of paper in one-step. Chitosan nanoparticles were prepared through physical ball grinding method and characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), laser particle size analyzer (LPSA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and atomic force microscope (AFM). To evaluate the resistance of chitosan nanoparticle coating, the mechanical properties of paper after artificial aging were evaluated using dry heat and hygrothermal accelerated aging methods. The SEM, EDX, and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) were used to analyze the interaction mechanism between chitosan and Shuxuan paper. The results show that the coated paper had superior durability with respect to pH, tensile strength, and folding endurance. There was a presence of protonated amines in the form of ammonium salts due to ionic bindings with free H+ in the acidified paper, and the remaining –NH2 could be used as a base reserve. Finally, the resulting coated papers displayed good antibacterial properties.

Abstract:Old books suffer from aging and deterioration spurred by acidification, oxidation, and other factors. To preserve these important historical documents, it is important to implement deacidification and reinforcement methods to extend their durability. In this study, microdroplets of 75 g/L sodium hydroxide solution were atomized before being utilized to neutralize acidity in the paper. As well, styrene acrylic latex was diluted to 10 times for atomization to function as a reinforcing agent. In addition to studying these methods individually, the effects of simultaneous deacidification and reinforcement were also studied.

Abstract:In the period of Ming and Qing Dynasty,bamboo paper was widely used in writing and printing.And now,it is also a very important and burdensome work for archival and ancient books restoration.While the lack of quality bamboo paper for restoration becomes a problem that crying out for solution.According to our survey,some places in Fujian,Jiangxi and Zhejiang provinces are still producing bamboo paper that fit for archival and ancient books restoration,which should be in addition protected and supported.Yet there also exists some other problems today,such as the under-emphasize of bamboo paper,the decline of bamboo paper quality,the disconnection between production,supply and marketing,and with no successor.
An Essential Role of Polymeric Adhesives in the Reinforcement of Acidified Paper Relics

Abstract:Paper acidification causes paper relics to undergo embrittlement and decay, to form dregs, and even to break upon a single touch; therefore, reinforcement and deacidification treatments are essential steps for paper conservation and to retard the deterioration and prolong the life of objects. Polymeric adhesives play an essential role in reinforcement and deacidification treatments, although it is not well studied. In this work, the effect of polymeric adhesives on the conservation process and their protective effects on acidified paper relics were studied. Firstly, three polymeric adhesives, including wheat starch paste, polyvinyl butyral (PVB), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), were selected as research objects. Subsequently, their effects on four popular conservation methods were further discussed, including traditional mounting, hot-melt with silk net, alcohol-soluble cotton mesh, and water-soluble cotton mesh. Additionally, as an example, the reversibility and long-term durability of water-soluble adhesive PVA-217 were assessed. Using a computer measured and controlled folding endurance tester, pendulum tensile strength tester, tear tester, burst tester, FT-IR, video optical contact angle tester, and other instruments, the conservation application of water-soluble adhesives in paper relics was evaluated. This study provides a scientific basis and experimental data for the application of polymeric adhesives in the conservation of paper relics.

Revealing the photochemical damage behavior of acidified Xuan paper based on the spectroscopic investigation and principal component analysis

Abstract:In museums, there is a huge storage of Xuan paper cultural relics with profound historical and artistic significances. Exploring the photochemical damage behavior of Xuan paper that is generally in acidification, namely its damage mechanisms and laws, is crucial for the preventive lighting protection for paper cultural relics. In this study, the accelerated aging experiments in the range of visible light were conducted on Xuan paper samples with different degrees of acidification. The photochemical damage mechanisms of samples were traced, which is related with the synergistic effects of oxidation and hydrolysis reactions. It can be found that there is an effect of acidification, a long-standing material property of Xuan paper, on its damage, which further defines its preservation state in museums. On this basis, a spectral quantification method of infrared spectra combined with the principal component analysis was proposed to comprehensively analyze the photochemical damage law of Xuan paper in different preservation states. The analysis shows that the effect of acidification degree (pH values), spectra wavelength (λ), and their interaction on the damage to Xuan paper are statistically significant. Furthermore, the fitted mathematical function of pH values and λ is of great importance for evaluating photochemical damage, in order to further develop preventive lighting protection applications.

Abstract:Abstract Paper cultural relics such as double-sided printed newspapers and periodicals represent modern cultural heritage. Severe damage such as embrittlement, decay, and dreg generally occur to paper; hence, it urgently needs conservation and restoration. Therefore, herein, a new reinforcement method for the fragile double-sided printed paper cultural relics is proposed with cotton mesh and adhesive PVA217 as reinforcement materials. Using a computer measured and controlled folding endurance tester, a pendulum tensile strength tester, pH meter, pulp viscosimeter, and other instruments, the physical properties of newspaper samples before and after aging were evaluated. In addition, the mechanical properties, chromatic aberration and surface morphology of simulated samples before and after the cotton mesh reinforcement and Japanese washi paper reinforcement were assessed. The experimental results indicate that this new reinforcement method could effectively improve the physical strength, chromatic aberration and durability of the simulated samples. Widespread applications of this cotton mesh reinforcement method for the reinforcement and protection of the red revolutionary cultural relics such as double-sided printed newspaper and periodicals during the Republic of China era are foreseeable.

Abstract:To overcome the problem of Shu Xuan paper with ancient drawings becoming brittle after conservation, accelerated aged Shu Xuan paper was used as a sample for de - acidification experiments on ancient drawings and paintings made on Xuan paper.Following the ＂Minimal interventional Principle＂ for culture relics,the Shu Xuan paper was de - acidified by controlled washing using ultra - pure water as solvent.The results of pH value,color difference measurements and the folding endurance of the paper suggest that this method can reduce the damage to Shu Xuan paper while not introducing new impurities.The method is also environmentally friendly and of low cost.

Abstract:The aging process of paper will be accelerated by acidification behavior during the storage process of paper archives, and the mechanical properties of paper archives will be weakened. By deacidizing and strengthening, the further aging of the acidified archives paper can be delayed or prevented, and the mechanical properties can be improved, so that the service life of paper archives is prolonged. To delay even to prevent the aging process, deacidizing and strengthening technology is employed. Herein, the "hybrid" system was reported by combining nano-calcium carbonate as deacidification agent, modified hydroxypropyl cellulose as reinforcement agent and ethanol as dispersant. The artificially acidified paper was brushed with it, and the pH value, mechanical properties and whiteness were measured to study the effect of deacidification and reinforcement. The results showed that oleic acid was successfully grafted onto hydroxypropyl cellulose by N,N′-carbonyl diimidazole mediated method to obtain oleic acid grafted hydroxypropyl cellulose with good dispersion in ethanol. After treating acidified paper with "hybrid" system, the pH value and the tensile strength index increase, the whiteness is almost unchanged, that is, the use of "hybrid" system plays a good deacidifying strengthening effect. The acidified paper samples before and after treatment with "hybrid" system were subjected to dry-heat aging treatment. Compared with acidified paper, the pH value, tensile strength index and whiteness of acidified paper treated with "hybrid" system are effectively inhibited, that is, the use of "hybrid" system can effectively delay the aging and acidification process of paper.
