Abstract:The hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO) was synthesized from hexafluoropropene (HFP) and oxygen by taking hexafluoropropane (FC-36) as solvent. The effects of the ratios of HFP to oxygen and solvent and the temperature on the reaction were investigated, and the kinetics of the reaction was studied. The results indicated that the reaction was first-order for hexafluoropropene and activation energy was 80.9 kJ/mol at 3 MPa and 110-125°C.

Abstract:CF4 is one of the representative and environmentally hazardous perfluorinated compounds. Even though their decomposition via a catalytic thermal process is an effective process for dissociating C-F bonds by employing catalysts with Lewis acid sites, the related mechanisms are unclear. Herein, we report a theoretical mechanism for the hydrolysis of tetrafluoromethane (CF4) on an gamma-alumina surface via density functional theory calculations. The overall reaction mechanism was divided into two steps: CF2O formation and CO2 formation. After the dissociative adsorption of CF4 to the strongest Lewis acid site on the surface of the catalyst, several pathways of defluorination reaction were investigated considering the presence of water and the order of reaction steps. Regardless of the reaction pathway considered, the rate-determining step of the overall reaction was found to be the first dissociation of the C-F bond in CF4, which has the highest energy barrier of 42.31 kcal/mol. Interestingly, oxygen vacancies were readily formed on the catalyst surface during several reaction pathways following its interaction with the reaction intermediate, and these sites could be replaced by fluorine atoms detached from CF4. Our findings suggest that facile desorption of HF, in addition to the presence of strong acidic sites on the catalyst surface for C-F bond dissociation, is critical for improving the CF4 hydrolysis.
Synthesis of Hexafluoropropylene Oxide from Hexafluoropropylene and Hypochlorite Using Hydrofluoroether Solvent

Abstract:Hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO) is a versatile fluorochemical widely used in the synthesis of various fluorinated compounds and fluorinated polymers. In this paper, we report on the successful synthesis of HFPO via the epoxidation of hexafluoropropylene (HFP) with NaOCl in a two-phase solvent system. Among the organic phase solvents tested, hydrofluoroethers such as C 4 F 9 OCH 3 , C 4 F 9 OC 2 H 5, and C 7 F 15 OC 2 H 5 showed high HFPO yields, indicating their potential to replace conventional CFCl 2 CF 2 Cl (CFC-113), which is ozone depleting and global warming chemical. When the reaction was carried out for 20 min at room temperature, the C 4 F 9 OCH 3 —water two-phase system produced HFPO with over 40% yield and over 70% selectivity. To optimize the reaction conditions, various reaction parameters were investigated, including the effects of NaOH and phase transition catalysts. Analysis of the by-products using 19 F and 13 C NMR and X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that HFP/HFPO decomposes during oxidation to F ̄, CO 2 , oxalate, trifluoroacetate, etc. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidated the reaction pathway of this epoxidation: with a lower E-barrier of 12.8 kcal/mol, the nucleophilic attack of OCl ̄ on the β-carbon of HFP is preferable to the α-carbon pathway.

Abstract:The kinetics of non-catalyzed decomposition of fructose in high temperature liquid water was studied at temperatures from 453.15 K to 493.15 K and under pressure at 10 MPa.The main products of fructose decomposition were glucose, formic acid, acetic acid, levulinic acid, furfural and 5-hydroxymethyl furfural,etc.The evaluated energy of activation of fructose decomposition was 126.16 kJ·mol -1.In addition, the effects of temperature and reaction time on the yield distributions of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural were investigated.Selective decomposition of fructose in high temperature liquid water was possible.

Abstract:Ab initio CCSD(T)/CBS//B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) calculations of the potential energy surface for possible dissociation channels of HOC2H3F, as well as Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) calculations of rate constants, were carried out, in order to predict statistical product branching ratios in dissociation of HOC2H3F at various internal energies. The most favorable reaction pathway leading to the major CH2CHO+HF products is as the following: OH+C2H3F→i2→TS14→i6→TS9→i3→TS3→CH2CHO+HF, where the ratedetermining step is HF elimination from the CO bridging position via TS11, lying above the reactants by 3.8 kcal/mol. The CH2O+CH2F products can be formed by F atom migration from Cβ to Cα position via TS14, then H migration from O to Cα position via TS16, and C–C breaking to form the products via TS5, which is 1.8 kcal/mol lower in energy than the reactants, and 4.0 kcal/mol lower than TS11.

Abstract:Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA), an alternative of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), has been detected frequently in environmental media worldwide. It has been reported that HFPO-DA is equal to or more toxic than PFOA, as well as more recalcitrant to degradation. In this study, the efficient degradation of HFPO-DA was achieved by the thermally activated persulfate (TAP) system, but the influence of co-contaminants in the field can be significant. The degradation pathways of HFPO-DA were proposed through an integrated approach of experiment and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. CF3CF2COO− and CF3COO−, were the stable intermediates identified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS). Electron transfer, decarboxylation, H abstraction, HF elimination using H2O as a catalyst and hydrolysis occurred in different steps of HFPO-DA degradation process, with –COO− as the initial oxidative site attacked by SO4−. In addition, the acute toxicity assessment for HFPO-DA degradation in the TAP system performed by Escherichia coli suggested that HFPO-DA was degraded to a level having no adverse effect on the growth of E. coli, and no more toxic intermediates were formed. Overall, this work provides insights for the degradation of HFPO-DA contamination by the TAP system.

Abstract:With on-line coupled thermo-gravimetric analyzer-Fourier transform infrared spectrometer technique, the thermal decomposition of lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) and its gas evolution at inert environment (H2O<10 ppm) were studied under both non-isothermal and isothermal conditions. The results showed that the LiPF6 decomposition is a single-stage reaction with LiF as final residue and PF5 as gas product. In addition, its decomposition kinetics was determined as 2D phase boundary movement (cylindrical symmetry) under both non-isothermal and isothermal conditions. Furthermore, the activation energy of LiPF6 decomposition was calculated as 104 and 92 kJ/mol for non-isothermal and isothermal conditions, respectively.

Abstract:The thermal decomposition of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) under oxidative conditions was investigated using air (O2) and N2O as oxidants over temperatures ranging from 400 to 1000 °C in an α-alumina reactor. In the presence of air, PFOA was found to decompose into perfluorohept-1-ene (C7F14) and perfluoroheptanoyl fluoride (C7F14O) in addition to HF, CO, and CO2. At temperatures above 800 °C, both C7F14 and C7F14O were no longer detected. A comprehensive analysis of the reaction mechanisms through quantum chemical analysis and kinetic modeling in combination with experimental observations was utilized to identify key reaction pathways. Quantum chemical analysis led to the conclusion that oxygen atoms are crucial in decomposing perfluoroalk-1-enes, especially the stable perfluorohept-1-ene (C7F14). Under oxidative conditions, it was found that significant quantities of C2F6 and CF4 were formed. Further quantum chemical analysis suggests that the O atoms facilitate the formation of volatile fluorinated compounds (VFCs) such as tetrafluoromethane (CF4) and hexafluoroethane (C2F6), particularly at higher temperatures. By elucidating these key reactions, an improved understanding of the potential formation products of incomplete combustion (PICs) or products of incomplete destruction (PIDs) is made.

Abstract:The thermal decomposition of lithium hexafluorophosphate was studied by using C80 calorimeter, and the samples were heated at a 0.2 K·min−1 heating rate from ambient temperature to 573 K in pressure-sensitive transducer fitted and sealed vessel with argon atmosphere. It is found that LiPF6 decomposes near 433 K, and the gas product PF5 causes the pressure increasing. The LiPF6 decomposition reaction order is calculated based on the pressure data by two methods, its average value is n=1.5, then, the reaction is assumed to be dependent on the Arrhenius law and mass action law, and thus the activation energy and pre-exponential factor were calculated to be E=104.2 kJ·mol−1, A=1.12×107 s−1, respectively.

Abstract:The pyrolysis experiment of trifluoromethane (R23) to tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and hexafluoropropylene (HFP) was carried out in a nickel tubular reactor at temperature of 700-900 degrees C and residence time of 4-40 s. Gas products were identified as TFE, C3F8, C2HF5, HFP, CF3C CCF3, CF2=CHCF3, cyc-C4F8, CF3CF=CFCF3, n-C4F10, CF2=CFCF2CF3, CF2=C(CF3)(2) (PFiB), CH(CF3)(3) and cyc-C5F10 by using GC-MS. It was proposed that TFE and HFP would convert into oligomers at high temperature and long residence time through elemental balance analysis and formation rate measurement of HF and oligomers. Oligomers formed during pyrolysis reaction was also analyzed by H-1 NMR method. Based on the studies of oligomerization and reported papers, a relatively detailed pyrolysis mechanism and kinetic model was developed. The results revealed that the molecular structure of oligomers was only consist of carbon and fluorine element and could be expressed as (CF2)(n). The computer simulation result of kinetic model showed good agreement with experimental data as the deviation of model was acceptable. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Hexafluoropropylene oxide was synthesized by using hexafluoropropylene(raw material), sodium hypochlorite(oxidant), 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane(solvent) and trioctylmethylammonium chloride(phase-transfer catalyst), and the effects of sodium hypochlorite aqueous solution adding approach, reaction temperature, catalyst dosage, sodium hypochlorite solution/1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane volume ratio and reaction time on the oxidation process was investigated. The results show that when sodium hypochlorite is slowly added under reaction temperature of-12℃, and the catalyst dosage is 2.5g with aqueous/organic phase volume ratio of 1 and reaction time of 2 h, the conversion of hexafluoropropylene is 91.3% and the yield and selectivity of hexafluoropropylene oxide can reach to 84.5% and 92.5%, respectively. The formation mechanism of the byproducts SNa F, CF3 COONa, CF3CF2 COONa and CF3 CFHCOONa is proved by 19F-NMR and 1H-NMR, and the intermediates and transition states of the reaction were obtained by quantum chemical calculation on DFT/u B3LYP/6-31+G(d, p).
The Decomposition of 2,2-Bis(tert-Butylperoxy)-butane under High Pressure

Abstract:The thermal decomposition of the bifunctional peroxide 2,2-bis(tertbuty1 peroxy)butane was investigated in a flow reactor at temperatures of 135 to 212°C and pressures of up to 2000 bar. The concentration of the peroxide in isododecane was varied between 1 and 22% by weight. The rate of decomposition measured was used to determine the energy of activation (EA = 151.1 ± 3 kJ/mol) and the activation volume (Δv” = 22.3 mL/mol). Up to a peroxide concentration of 5% by weight, the decomposition takes place according to a firat-order rate equation. Above this concentration, induced decomposition takes effect. Gas chromatographic analysis showed that the liquid decomposition products consisted mainly of acetone and tert-butyl alcohol apart from methyl ethyl ketone, propionic acid methyl ester, acetic acid ethyl ester, tert-butyl methyl ether, and oligomers of the solvent. The gaseous decomposition products consisted of methane and carbon dioxide as well as small quantities of ethane, propane, and ethylene. A theoretical explanation of the mechanism of decomposition is postulated which explains the spectrum of these components and its changes as a function of the peroxide concentration, the residence time, the temperature, and the pressure.

Abstract:The prototype tetra-atomic reaction F+H2O -> HF+OH plays a significant role in both atmospheric and astronomical chemistry. In this work, thermal rate coefficients of this reaction are determined with the ring polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD) method on a full-dimensional potential energy surface (PES). This PES is the most accurate one for the title reaction, as demonstrated by the correct barrier height and reaction energy, compared to the benchmark calculations by the focal point analysis and the high accuracy extrapolated ab initio thermochemistry methods. The RPMD rate coefficients are in excellent agreement with those calculated by the semiclassical transition state theory and a two-dimensional master equation technique, and some experimental measurements. As has been found in many RPMD applications, quantum effects, including tunneling and zero-point energy effects, can be efficiently and effectively captured by the RPMD method. In addition, the convergence of the results with respect to the number of beads is rapid, which is also consistent with previous RPMD applications.

Abstract:Context: Bisphenols are one of the main components of bio-oil, produced during the pyrolysis of lignin-containing biomass. Synthetic bisphenols are used in polycarbonate plastics, epoxy resins, and thermal papers. Their mechanism of oxidation is important for the determination of the fire safety of these materials and the possibility of using them as additives in fuels for the decrease and description of ignition delays, as well as for the determination of their health risk assessment in medicine. One representative of bisphenols is p-benzylphenol (p-PhCH2PhOH), which is formed during the fast pyrolysis of lignine-containing biomass. Its thermochemistry of oxidation has been partially studied previously. It is shown that the reaction of chain oxidation of p-PhCH2PhOH is thermochemically favorable at low temperatures. However, these studies consider only two pathways of this reaction: (1) the chain oxidation of RH by RO2• and (2) the tautomerization of R'HO2• to R'O2H with following production of R'O• and OH radicals. At the same time, the reactions of intramolecular rearrangement of RO2•, produced PhC(O)H and •PhOH or HOPhC(O)H and •Ph, are not reported but can be an important part of its oxidation mechanism. Methods: The five DFT (M06-2X (i = 1), B3LYP (i = 2), wB97XD (i = 3), M08HX (i = 4), MN15 (i = 5)) approaches with 6-311 + + G(d,p) basis set are used for the determination of standard enthalpies of atomization (ΔraH°(Xi)) of considered compounds (molecules, radicals, and transition states). These values of ΔraH°(Xi) are corrected using the empirical linear calibration dependencies, reported previously. The different calibration dependencies are used for the hydrocarbons (including the aromatics and simple oxygenated derivatives) and for the peroxides. The corrected values of ΔraH°(Xi, CORR) are used according to Hess's law for the determination of ΔfH°(Xi, CORR). The most consistent values of ΔfH°(X, MEAN) are derived from the coordination of the values of ΔfH°(Xi,CORR) using the intersection of their values of standard deviations (3SDi). These values of ΔfH°(X, MEAN), as well as the B3LYP values of S°(X), which are accounting the frequencies correction and internal rotations, as well as their temperature dependencies, are used for the determination of thermochemistry of considered reactions and of the calculation, within transition state theory (TST), of the values of high pressure limits of the rate constant. The values of H°(Xi), S°(Xi), and G°(Xi) are calculated using the Gaussian 16w program. The considered mechanism is prepared using ISIS/Draw package. The temperature dependencies of thermochemical properties and the values of rate constants are determined using the ChemRate program (v.1.5). The optimized structures are visualized using the Chemcraft package.
Time-Resolved Quantification of Key Species and Mechanistic Insights in Low-Temperature Tetrahydrofuran Oxidation

Abstract:We investigate the kinetics and report the time-resolved concentrations of key chemical species in the oxidation of tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 7500 Torr and 450–675 K. Experiments are carried out using high-pressure multiplexed photoionization mass spectrometry (MPIMS) combined with tunable vacuum ultraviolet radiation from the Berkely LabAdvanced Light Source. Intermediates and products are quantified using reference photoionization (PI) cross sections, when available, and constrained by a global carbon balance tracking approach at all experimental temperatures simultaneously for the species without reference cross sections. From carbon balancing, we determine time-resolved concentrations for the ROO• and •OOQOOH radical intermediates, butanedial, and the combined concentration of ketohydroperoxide (KHP) and unsaturated hydroperoxide (UHP) products stemming from the •QOOH + O 2 reaction. Furthermore, we quantify a product that we tentatively assign as fumaraldehyde, which arises from UHP decomposition via H 2 O or •OH + H loss. The experimentally derived species concentrations are compared with model predictions using the most recent literature THF oxidation mechanism of Fenard et al. (Combust. Flame 2018, 191, 252-269). Our results indicate that the literature mechanism significantly overestimates THF consumption and the UHP + KHP concentration at our conditions. The model predictions are sensitive to the rate coefficient for the ROO• isomerization to •QOOH, which is the gateway for radical chain propagating and branching pathways. Comparisons with our recent results for cyclopentane (Demireva et al., Combust. Flame 2023, 257, 112506) provide insights into the effect of the ether group on reactivity and highlight the need to determine accurate rate coefficients of ROO• isomerization and subsequent reactions.

Abstract:SF6 has been designated as a greenhouse gas by the Kyoto Protocol because of its high global warming potential. C5-perfluorinated ketone (C5F10O or C5-PFK) has excellent insulation properties and environmental characteristics. and has been chosen as an alternative gas to SF6. Calculation of thermal decomposition is usually based on local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and local chemical equilibrium assumptions. However, the composition may not reach chemical equilibrium, particularly at lower temperatures and high rates of temperature increase. In order to compare the chemical non-equilibrium and local thermodynamic equilibrium compositions, a chemical kinetic model is used to calculate time evolution of composition; this considers the effects of the energy barrier in chemical reactions. To obtain the required data for the model, which is necessary because of the limited research on reaction rates in C5-PFK decomposition, the methods of computational chemistry are used to calculate transition states and reaction rates. The LTE composition is calculated using Gibbs free energy minimization. Calculations are presented for two possible C5-PFK thermal decomposition products, C4F7O and C3F4O. The result indicates that chemical kinetics is required to calculate the dissociation of C5-PFK at low temperatures, such as occur during arc ignition and near the arc boundary.
An Ab Initio Based Full-Dimensional Global Potential Energy Surface For Fh2o(X(2)A ')And Dynamics For The F + H2o -> Hf Plus Ho Reaction

Abstract:A global potential energy surface (PES) for the ground electronic state of FH2O is constructed based on more than 30 000 ab initio points at the multi-reference configuration interaction level. The PES features a pre-reaction van der Waals well and two post-reaction hydrogen-bonded complexes, as well as a "reactant-like" transition state with a classical barrier of 3.8 kcal/mol. The adiabatic F + H2O -> HF + OH reaction dynamics on this PES was investigated using a standard quasi-classical trajectory method. In agreement with experiment, the HF product contains significant vibrational excitation with limited rotational excitation, while the OH product is internally cold, reflecting its spectator role in the reaction. Abstract:Hexafluoropropylene oxide tetrameric acid (HFPO-TeA) is an alternative to perfluorooctanecarboxylic acid (PFOA) and is commonly used in the production of perfluoropolymers. In this study, the performances of ozone oxidation, electrochemical oxidation, and electrocatalytic ozone techniques in the degradation of HFPO-TeA were compared. The experimental results indicated that the electrocatalytic ozone technique was best. The effects of different current densities, ozone concentrations, electrolyte types, and initial pollutant concentrations on HFPOTeA degradation were investigated. The results showed that the ratio of HFPO-TeA degradation reached 95.9% after electrolysis for 120 min for an initial HFPO-TeA concentration of 100 mg/L, a reaction volume of 120 mL, an applied current density of 10 mA/cm 2 , and an ozone concentration of 20 mg/L. The intermediate products detected were hexafluoropropylene oxide dimeric acid [C 3 F 7 OCF(CF 3 )COO - ], pentafluoropropionic acid [C 2 F 5 COO - ], and trifluoroacetic acid [CF 3 COO - ]. The mechanisms involved in HFPO-TeA degradation include direct electron transfer, indirect oxidation mediated by hydroxyl radicals ( & sdot;OH), and ozone oxidation.

Abstract:Thermokinetic parameters and transport parameters are of great importance to the combustion model and the reaction rate rules are of great importance to construct the combustion reaction mechanism for hydrocarbon fuels. The HO elimination reaction class for hydroperoxyalkenylperoxy radicals is one of the key reaction classes for olefin, for which the rate coefficients are lacking. Therefore, the rate coefficients and rate rules of the HO elimination reaction class for hydroperoxyalkenylperoxy radicals are studied in this work. The reaction class transition state theory (RC-TST) is used to calculate the rate coefficients. In addition, the HO elimination reaction class of hydroperoxyalkenylperoxy radicals is divided into four subclasses depending upon the type of H-C bond that is broken in the reactant molecules, and the rate rules are calculated by taking the average of rate coefficients from a representative set of reactions in a subclass. The calculated kinetics data would be valuable for the construction of the combustion reaction mechanism for olefin.
