Abstract:Aliphatic diamines and polyamines are long used as important airing agents for epoxy resins, especially in room-temperature-cure epoxy coatings and adhesives due to their high reactivity and low cost. Herein we systematically evaluate our newly developed liquid branched aliphatic polyamine, N,N,N',N'-tetra(3-aminopropyl)-1,6-diaminohexane (TADH), as the curing agent for bisphenol A epoxy (DGEBA), emphasizing the isothermal cure reaction, network structure, and mechanical properties. The isothermal curing reaction of DGEBA/TADH at 40, 50 60, and 70 degrees C is autocatalytic, and we adequately simulate the curing kinetic rate with the extended autocatalytic Kamal model. Further isoconversional kinetic analysis reveals that the effective activation energy changes dramatically as the reaction proceeds, especially for the diffusion-controlled stage due to the chemical vitrification (T-g infinity(DSC) = 119 degrees C). Compared to DGEBA/1,6-diaminohexane (a starting material of TADH), a dynamic mechanical analysis illustrates that the cured DGEBA/TADH network features three relaxations and shows the increased storage modulus (up to 54 degrees C), alpha and beta transition temperatures, and activation energy of the alpha relaxation. Also, DGEBA/TADH shows enhanced mechanical properties: flexural strength (similar to 95 MPa), flexural modulus (similar to 2440 MPa), and shear strength (similar to 8 MPa), with good processing ability (gel time of 130-150 min at 25 degrees C). Due to these merits, TADH may be suitable to be used in epoxy systems, highlighting its good promise in adhesive applications.
A Comparative Study of Epoxy Resin Cured with a Linear Diamine and a Branched Polyamine

Abstract:The molecular topology of amine curing agents is expected to greatly affect the curing reaction and properties of the epoxy resins, yet the exact influence still remains little understood. Herein we find out two representative aliphatic amines: linear propanediamine (PDA) and branched N,N,N′,N′-tetra(3-aminopropyl)-1,3-propanediamine (TAPA), and use them to cure diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA). The curing reaction, dynamic mechanical properties, and thermal stability of DGEBA/PDA and DGEBA/TAPA are systematically investigated and compared. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) confirms TAPA and PDA have very close reactivity much higher than that of commercial Jeffamine T-403 with the branched molecular structure. The curing kinetic analysis shows TAPA causes the higher isothermal conversion at the lower temperature (e.g., 40°C), the autocatalysis and diffusion-associated kinetics feature the isothermal reactions, and the extended Kamal model turns out to be able to well predict the curing rate. Then, the isoconversional analysis with the Vyazovkin methods demonstrates compared to PDA, TAPA leads to the lower effective activation energy at the very beginning due to its catalytic tertiary amino groups, but the reversed trend emerges in the deep-conversion stage, especially, in the glass-transition regime, owing to its flexible aliphatic molecular chains. Furthermore, the isothermal conversion at the higher temperatures is predicted from the nonisothermal experiments. Finally, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) shows cured DGEBA/TAPA exhibits the higher glass- and β-relaxation temperatures and crosslink density than DGEBA/PDA, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) reveals TAPA-cured epoxy has the excellent thermal stability with the higher char yield.

Abstract:A novel combined liquid crystalline epoxy containing biphenyl and aromatic ester-type group, diglycidyl ether of 4, 4′-bis (4-hydroxybenzoyloxy)-3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethylbiphenyl (DGE-BHBTMBP), was synthesized. Its spectroscopic structure and thermal properties were investigated with NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized light microscopy (PLM). Two curing agents, diaminodiphenylsulfon (DDS) and bis (aminephenoxylphenyl) sulfone (BAPS), were chosen to investigate the curing behavior of epoxy/aromatic diamine by means of nonisothermal DSC. The curing results with these two curing agents show that BAPS is the more appropriate curing agent than DDS.
Synthesis and Curing Kinetic Analysis of Eugenol-Based Siloxane Epoxy Resin

Abstract:A novel eugenol-based siloxane epoxy resin（D4EUEP） was synthesized from eugenol glycidyl ether and tetramethyl-cyclotetrasiloxane. The molecular structure was characterized by 1H NMR and MALDI-TOF. The nonisothermal curing behavior of D4EUEP/33DDS system was characterized with differential scanning calorimetry（DSC）, showing the relationship between temperature and heat rate. The isoconversional ?esták–Berggren model and Málek method were used to analyze the curing kinetics and established curing kinetic model. All the kinetic parameters were acquired and the explicit rate equations were constructed. The curing kinetic prediction was made in great coincidence with the experimental data. On the other hand, advanced isoconversional method（AICM）revealed the relationship between the conversion and activation energy and discussed the microscopic mechanisms during the curing process. Vyazovkin method was also used to predict the isothermal curing process in different temperature.

Abstract:The cure kinetics of a rigid-rod epoxy monomer, diglycidyl ether of 4,4'-bisphenol (DGEBP), and the curing agent with the similar rigid-rod group, 4,4'-diaminebiphenyl (DABP), was studied using an advanced isoconversional method (AICM). DGEBP/DABP curing system was carried out by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Three exothermic peaks were depicted by nonisothermal DSC studies: the first two peaks were attributed to the curing reaction, and the last peak was attributed to the decomposition of the cured epoxy resin. The LC phase transformation of the curing process was observed by PLM. Using AICM, the largest activation energy of the curing reaction of DGEBP/DABP system was obtained as 108kJ/mol. It can also be learned that LC phase transformation of the curing process affects the reaction significantly.

Abstract:The cure kinetics of naphthyl/dicyclopentadiene epoxy resin and bisphenoxy (3-hydroxy) phosphine oxide was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) under nonisothermal and isothermal condition. The advanced isoconversional method was used to study the nonisothermal DSC data, the effective activation energy of the curing system in the early stage agreed with the value Calculated from the Kissinger model and then increased because of the hindrance of molecular mobility. Autocatalytic behavior was shown in the isothermal DSC measurement, which was well described by Kamal model in the early curing stage. In the later stage, a crosslinked network structure was formed and the curing reaction was mainly controlled by diffusion. The diffusion factor was introduced to optimize the Kamal model and correct the deviation of the calculated data. The physical properties of the cured polymer were evaluated by dynamic mechanical thermal analyses, were mogravimetric analyses, and limiting oxygen index test, which exhibited relatively high glass transition temperature, thermal stability, and flame retardancy. Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are conducted to study the thermo-mechanical properties of a family of thermosetting epoxy-amines. The crosslinked epoxy resin EPON862 with a series of cross-linkers is built and simulated under the polymer consistent force field (PCFF). Three types of curing agents (rigidity1,3-phenylenediamine (1,3-P), 4,4-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM), and phenol-formaldehyde-ethylenediamine (PFE)) with different numbers of active sites are selected in the simulations. We focus on the effects of the cross-linkers on thermo-mechanical properties such as density, glass transition temperature (T (g)), elastic constants, and strength. Our simulations show a significant increase in the T (g), Young's modulus and yield stress with the increase in the degree of conversion. The simulation results reveal that the mechanical properties of thermosetting polymers are strongly dependent on the molecular structures of the cross-linker and network topological properties, such as end-to-end distance, crosslinking density and degree of conversion.
Preparation, Curing Kinetics, and Properties of a Novel Low-Volatile Starlike Aliphatic-Polyamine Curing Agent for Epoxy Resins

Abstract:A novel low-volatile starlike aliphatic polyamine with extraordinarily high –NH2 functionalities, N,N,N′,N′,N′′-penta(3-aminopropyl)-diethylenetriamine (PADT), is synthesized and its molecular structure is confirmed by the FTIR, 1H NMR and ESI-MS analysis. Then PADT is employed as the curing agent for the epoxy resin of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and the isothermal reaction of DGEBA/PADT is systematically investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) according to the model-fitting approach and model-free advanced isoconversional method developed by Vyazovkin. The result shows that PADT possesses the high reactivity and the reaction is autocatalytic in nature. The further reaction kinetic analysis indicates that the Kamal model can well fit the reaction rate at the reaction-controlled stage, whereas the extended Kamal model with a diffusion term can provide an excellent match throughout the isothermal reaction. On the other hand, the model-free kinetic analysis reveals a strong dependence of effective activation energy, Eα, on fractional conversion, α, which could mirror the drastic change of the reaction mechanisms, in particular, the rapid drop in Eα observed in the deep-conversion regime due to the diffusion-controlled reaction kinetics. Then, a dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) of the cured DGEBA/PADT network discloses three relaxations from the low- to high-temperature range: β (Tβ=−34.4°C), α′ (Tα′=68.0°C) and α (Tg=144.3°C). Moreover, compared to linear propanediamine, PADT can much increase the crosslink density and glass temperature of the cured epoxy resin. Finally, the thermogravimetric (TG) analysis reveals PADT, like propanediamine, can impart the cured epoxy resin with the excellent thermal stability with the initial decomposition temperature as high as ∼300°C. On the basis of these experimental data, we can conclude that PADT exhibits a great potential to partially replace conventional high-volatile aliphatic-amine curing agents of low molecular weights.
Nonisothermal Reaction, Thermal Stability and Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Epoxy System with Novel Nonlinear Multifunctional Polyamine Hardener

Abstract:N,N,N′,N′-tetra(3-aminopropyl)-1,6-diaminohexane (TADH), a nonlinear multifunctional polyamine, was prepared and employed as a novel hardener for diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA). Nonisothermal reactions of DGEBA/TADH were systematically investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). According to the Málek method, the two-parameter Šesták–Berggren model was selected to simulate the reaction rate with a good match achieved, and a correlation of effective activation energies Eα with fractional conversion α was determined with the mode-free isoconversional Vyazovkin method. As α rose, Eα reduced quickly from ∼65 to 57kJ/mol up to α≈15%, then decreased slowly to ∼50kJ/mol till α≈75%, and finally dropped to ∼30kJ/mol at full conversion. In addition, analysis of thermal stability of the cured DGEBA/TADH with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that it possessed quite good thermal stability and increased residual char content at 600°C in nitrogen. Furthermore, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) of the DGEBA/TADH network showed its relaxations were characterized by localized motions of hydroxyl ether segments (β relaxation) and cooperative motions of whole network chains (glass relaxation) at different temperature regions.
STUDY ON DGE-BHBTMBP/E-51/DDS CURED

Abstract:By using 4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulfone(DDS)as the curing agent,an epoxy resin based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A(epoxy resin E-51)was modified with a novel liquid-crystalline epoxy resin combining biphenyl and aromatic ester-type mesogenic units,diglycidyl ether of 4,4'-bis(4-hydroxybenzoyloxy)-3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl biphenyl(DGE-BHBTMBP).The influences of DGE-BHBTMBP on the thermal and mechanical properties of final cured resin systems were investigated by DMA,TGA and SEM.The results showed that DGE-BHBTMBP could increase the glass-transition temperature(Tg)and the initial temperature of decomposition(Td).Its Tg and Td increased 44℃ and 21.8℃ with 20% DGE-BHBTMBP,respectively.The curing system with 4% DGE-BHBTMBP had the good mechanical properties.The impact strength and the bending strength of the cured resin increase by 136% and 9%,respectively.

Abstract:Acrylonitrile-modified aliphatic amine adducts are often used as curing agents for room-temperature epoxy formulations (coatings, adhesives, sealants, castings, etc.), yet the curing reaction and properties of resultant epoxy systems still remain less fundamentally understood. Herein we systematically investigate our newly-developed acrylonitrile-modified multifunctional polyamine curing agent for bisphenol A epoxy resin (DGEBA): an aciylonitrile-capped poly(propyleneimine) dendrimer (PAN4). The impact of the molecular structure of PAN4 and a controlled poly(propyleneimine) dendrimer (1.0GPPI) on the curing reactivity, reaction mechanisms, thermal stability, viscoelastic response and mechanical properties of the epoxy systems are highlighted. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) confirms DGEBA/PAN4 shows markedly lower reactivity and reaction exotherm than DGEBA/1.0GPPI, and the model-free isoconversional kinetic analysis reveals that DGEBA/PAN4 has the generally lower reaction activation energy. To be quantitative, the progress of the isothermal cure is predicted from the dynamic cure by using the Vyazovkin equation. The isothermal kinetic prediction shows that DGEBA/PAN4 requires about 10 times longer time to achieve the same conversion than DGEBA/1.0GPPI, which agrees with the experimentally observed much longer gel time of DGEBA/PAN4. Subsequently, dynamic mechanical analysis shows that PAN4 results in the cured epoxy network with the lower beta- and glass-relaxation temperatures, crosslink density, relaxation activation energy, enthalpy, entropy, but the higher damping near room temperature than 1.0GPPI. Finally, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrates cured DGEBA/PAN4 is thermally stable up to 200 degrees C, and mechanical property tests substantiate that PAN4 endows the cured epoxy with much higher impact and adhesion strengths than 1.0GPPI. Our data can provide a deeper insight into acrylonitrile-modified aliphatic amine curing agents from the two good model compounds (PAN4 and 1.0GPPI). (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Bio-based epoxy resins derived from diphenolic acid via amidation showing enhanced performance and unexpected autocatalytic effect on curing

Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA) is the main precursor in the synthesis of epoxy resins. However, because of its toxic and nonrenewable nature, BPA is unsuitable in the sustainable preparation of epoxy resins. In contrast, Diphenolic acid (DPA) is renewable but its carboxyl group limits its applications in bio-based thermosets. In this study, we report a novel amidation route to tailor DPA to produce epoxide monomers that present epoxy resins with a high performance. The diphenolic amides exhibited very low toxicities when compared with that of BPA, and also provided an unexpected autocatalytic effect on the curing reactions when succinic anhydride (SA) was used as the hardener. Dynamic mechanical analyses (DMA) and tensile test results confirmed the remarkable thermo-mechanical properties of the cured epoxy resins, which may be attributed to the increased cross-linking density and enhanced hydrogen bonding by the amide groups. Among the SA-cured epoxy resins, diglycidyl ether of diphenolic ethylamide exhibited the best performance, which included a high T-g of 114 ?degrees C, char yield (CY) of 20%, tensile strength of 60.2 MPa, and toughness value of 185 MPa. In addition, the DPA-derived epoxy resins have great potential in the preparation of bio-based composites because they act as excellent interfaces between the resin and cotton fibers (CoFs). Our study presents a new strategy to prepare bio-based epoxy resins with a high performance, emphasizing the greater potential of amidated DPA derivatives to replace BPA in the epoxy resin market.
Synthesis of a novel lignin‐based epoxy resin curing agent and study of cure kinetics, thermal, and mechanical properties

Abstract:In this contribution, first of all, the methoxy groups of organic solvent lignin (OSL) was converted to phenolic hydroxyl groups through demethylation reaction for the purpose of fabricating demethylated organic solvent lignin (DOSL). In addition, the resulting DOSL was utilized as a renewable material to synthesize a novel esterified lignin (EDOSL) by reacting with isobutyryl chloride for curing of epoxy resin. Finally, commercial liquid diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A was cured by EDOSL in the presence of 4‐dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) used as a catalyst based on dual‐curing mechanism. Dual curing is a processing methodology based upon the alliance of two diverse and compatible polymerization reactions occurring sequentially or simultaneously. According to the FTIR spectra and 1H‐NMR analyses, the demethylation of OSL, esterification of DOSL, and the curing reaction of epoxy resin with EDOSL were successfully conducted. The value of the phenolic hydrogen in the DOSL was approximately 4.89 mmol/g, which increased by 12.64% after demethylation. The thermal and mechanical performances of these cured epoxy samples were measured by DSC, DMA, TGA, and tensile testing. The epoxy system cured by 10%wt esterified lignin with 1%wt DMAP possessed the tensile strength of 71.54 ± 7.50 MPa and the initial degradation temperature (T5%) of 370°C, which can compete fairly with commercial aromatic curing agents or other lignin‐based agents studied currently for the curing of epoxy systems.

Abstract:A series of novel composites based on different ratios of epoxidised cresol novolac (ECN) and 4,4'-diglycidyl(3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbiphenyl) epoxy resin (TMBP) have been prepared with the curing agent 4,4'-methylenediamine (DDM) and 4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS), respectively. The investigation of cure kinetics was performed by differential scanning calorimetry using an isoconversional method. The high thermal stabilities of the cured samples were also studied by thermogravimetric analysis. In addition, no phase separation was observed for cured ECN/DDM and ECN/DDS blending with different amounts of TMBP by dynamic mechanical analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, the cured systems also exhibited excellent impact properties and low moisture absorption. All the results indicate that the ECN/TMBP/DDM and ECN/TMBP/DDS systems are promising materials in electronic packaging. (C) 2011 Society of Chemical Industry
Thermosetting Resin Based on Epoxidised Linseed Oil and Bio-Derived Crosslinker

Abstract:Thermosetting resins were synthesised from epoxidised linseed oil (ELO) in combination with a bio-derived diacid cross linker (Pripol 1009) in the presence of amine catalysts (triethylamine (TEA), 1-methylimidazole (1-MeIm), 2-methylimidazole (2-MeIm), 1,8-diazabicyclo [5.4.0] undec-7-ene (DBU) and 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP), yielding a 99.5% bio-derived, highly flexible transparent film, with significant water resistance. It was demonstrated that the mechanical and thermal properties of the resulting films were significantly influenced by the type of amine catalyst selected. The use of catalysts significantly enhanced the mechanical properties of the films; tensile strength improved by up to 545% (DMAP), Young's modulus improved by up to 422% (2-MeIm) and elongation at break improved by 14-84%. An infrared spectroscopic study coupled with simultaneous thermal analysis and modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) was undertaken in an attempt to elucidate the curing mechanism. Epoxide ring opening is clearly evidenced by infrared spectroscopy and the studies suggest that DMAP probably aids crosslinking between ELO and Pripol 1009 via epoxide ring opening, followed by etherification, due to its good nucleophilicity. The optimum DMAP catalyst loading giving the highest value of Young's modulus was determined at 1% with respect to the total resin weight. Higher concentrations of DMAP (5% wt) decreased the Young's modulus.
Anti-corrosion studies on cardanol epoxy coatings cured with redox-active aromatic trimer and tetramer oligoanilines

Abstract:In this article, structurally feasible aniline oligomers such as amine-capped trimer (DCTA) and tetramer (DCTAni) were synthesized and used as curing agents for coatings derived from epoxidized cardanol (ECD) and DGEBA (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A). These two epoxies were optimized to an 80:20 (ECD: DGEBA) ratio to ensure that the coating system has a higher ECD content. The coatings (DCTA 20, DCTA 10, DCTA 5, DCTAni 20, DCTAni 10, and DCTAni 5) were formulated with different ratios of DCTA, and DCTAni with 20, 10, and 5 wt% ratios with respect to BDA (1,4-butane diamine). To evaluate the corrosion resistance of these coatings, steel panels were coated and exposed to a standard 3.5 % NaCl saline solution. Tafel polarization studies revealed that 20 wt% of DCTA/DCTAni provided excellent anti-corrosion properties, with a corrosion rate (C R ) of 3.162 × 10 −6 and substantial improvement in polarization resistance (Rp) up to 128.32 MΩ. Furthermore, EIS analysis demonstrated that the coatings exhibited a maximum charge transfer resistance (R ct ) of 72 MΩ, and 94 MΩ for DCTA-20, and DCTAni -20, respectively. The coatings sustained for 500 h of salt-spray test demonstrated the high performance of these coatings. Mechanical strength and storage modulus were assessed using UTM and DMTA, revealing significantly improved results. Thermal analysis showed improved thermal stability of the epoxy coatings when the BDA percentage was reduced with DCTA/DCTAni and improved glass transition (T g ) temperature. Epoxy coatings on MS (mild steel) panels exhibited excellent abrasion resistance and adhesion to the substrate.

Abstract:The cure reactions of liquid lignin base epoxy resin (LEPL) with three different curing agents, viz., methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride, and 2-methyl-4-methylimidazole (EMI-2,4), were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry. Cure kinetics was evaluated using the multiple heating rate Kissinger method. The reactivities of the three curing agents were compared based on kinetics results obtained by DSC. Abstract:An epoxy based on cinnamic acid (Cin-epoxy) and an anhydride curing agent based on dipentene were prepared. Both products are liquids of low viscosity at room temperature. For the synthesis of the epoxy, cinnamic acid was first converted to a diacid by reacting with maleic anhydride via Friedel-Crafts reaction, followed by allylation of the carboxylic groups and subsequent epoxidation of the allyl double bonds. The curing agent was the Diels-Alder adduct of dipentene and maleic anhydride (DPMA). The chemical structures of Cin-epoxy and DPMA were confirmed by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, FT-IR and ESI-MS. Non-isothermal curing of Cin-epoxy was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In addition to DPMA, two commercial anhydrides were also used to cure Cin-epoxy and the curing reactivity and properties of cured resins were compared. Thermal mechanical properties and thermal stability of the cured epoxy resins were studied using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Results showed that Cin-epoxy was slightly more reactive than the bisphenol A type epoxy DER 332 and displayed good dynamic mechanical properties and thermal stability.

Abstract:In this study, a water-soluble dextrin derivative was synthesized by reacting dextrin with trimellitic anhydride. The chemical structure of the dextrin-derived curing agent was confirmed by FT-IR and 1H NMR. The dextrin derivative contained free carboxylic acid groups and was used as curing agent for waterborne epoxy in wood bonding test. The adhesion of wood bonded by this waterborne epoxy system was studied and compared with that of wood bonded by phenol–formaldehyde resin. Results showed that the two adhesive systems displayed very similar block shear strengths and specimen failures. The two types of adhesives also showed similar extents of resin penetration into the wood substrate. This study demonstrated that starch or dextrin could be used as an economic feedstock for synthesis of curing agents for waterborne epoxies in the effort to develop formaldehyde free and volatile organic compounds (VOC)-free wood adhesives.

Abstract:This study presents the characterization of cross-linking parameters of a liquid crystalline epoxy monomer with an aromatic diamine as a curing agent. The mixture tested consisted of bis [4-(10,11-epoxyundecanoyloxy)benzoate] p-phenylene (LCEM) and 1,3-phenylenediamine (1,3-PDA). This paper focuses on the structural characterization of such systems using X-ray analysis. To investigate this, a comprehensive analysis was conducted using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS). Through DSC analysis, the curing behavior and transition temperature of the liquid crystal epoxy system were established. To fully characterize the cross-linking of the system, a novel technique called DSC-TOPEM® was employed. The use of this technique enabled real-time monitoring of the curing process and provided precise information on the cross-linking energy, which resulted in the finding that the mixture was cross-linking faster than expected. WAXS analysis was performed to assess the structural changes formed during the cross-linking. The results of this analysis confirm that lower cross-linking temperatures of the mixture cause better ordering of mesogens than higher ones.
