Abstract:Abstact 3-Acetylamino-5-acetylfuran (3A5AF) is an important nitrogen-containing platform compound with broad application prospects and high research value. Herein, we report a simple, efficient and economical catalytic system for the synthesis of 3A5AF from sustainable N-acetylglucosamine (NAG). After a series of optimization experiments, composite additive 2SrCl 2 –B(OH) 3 with a synergistic effect was proved to exhibit the best catalytic performance. The influence of solvent, temperature, time and the concentration of NAG on the yield of 3A5AF was also systematically studied. The highest yield (51.9%) was achieved at 180 °C for 60 min in the presence of composite additive 2SrCl 2 –B(OH) 3 under conventional heating conditions. The composite additive was characterized using various analytical techniques including 1 H NMR, XRD, and TGA. Moreover, the investigation of reaction pathway was performed using 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and LC-MS spectroscopies. This study provided a new perspective for the application of low cost and efficient composite additive in the conversion of sustainable chitin biomass.

Selectivity-Switchable Conversion of Chitin-Derived N-Acetyl-d-glucosamine into Commodity Organic Acids at Room Temperature

Abstract:Chitin is an abundant and sustainable biomass from oceanic waste. Herein, a simple, mild, and effective method was developed to convert chitin biomass into valuable organic acids at room temperature using a common base and oxidant in water. In dilute sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution, similar to 72.3% yield of organic acid products including acetic acid (AA), formic acid (FA), glyceric acid (GlyA), and so forth was obtained from the chitin monomer N-acetyl-D-glucosamine under ambient air. Meanwhile, tunable product selectivity can be achieved by employing different oxidative reagents. FA was predominantly formed in 57.1% yield using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), while AA and GIyA were the major products in 41.2% yield with oxygen (O-2) gas. Divergent reaction pathways were presumably involved when using different oxidants. Compared to the conventional methods at high temperatures and/or pressures, the established approach requires minimal energy inputs, inexpensive equipment with reduced carbon emission, capital costs, and safety risks.
Subcritical water hydrolysis of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine: Hydrolysis mechanism, reaction pathways and optimization for selective production of 5-HMF and levulinic acid

Abstract:In this study, the subcritical water hydrolysis of N-acetyl-d-glucosamine (NAG), a monomer of abundant renewable marine biopolymer chitin, for production of value-added chemicals is investigated. The enhanced ionization of water at subcritical conditions (200 °C; 50-100 bar), provides enough acidity for deacetylation of NAG resulting in 80% yield of acetic acid along with traces of formic acid, lactic acid, glucose, fructose, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF),etc. The significant humin formation indicates that the self-condensation and polymerisation of 5-HMF is favored in water at subcritical conditions. A catalyst p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH) was employed to selectively convert NAG to levulinic acid (LA) via ring opening of 5-HMF previously formed during hydrolysis. The maximum yield of 27.13 ± 1% and 53.46 ± 1% of 5-HMF and LA, respectively, was obtained at process conditions optimized using Box-Behnken design coupled with response surface methodology. Subcritical water enables greener conversion of NAG to platform chemicals wherein the selective production can be achieved by tuning the process conditions.
Direct Conversion Of Chitin Into A N-Containing Furan Derivative

Abstract:This paper describes the direct conversion of chitin into a nitrogen-containing (N-containing) furan derivative (3A5AF) for the first time. Under optimized conditions, the yield of 3A5AF reaches 7.5% with ca. 50% chitin conversion by using boric acid and alkaline chlorides as additives, and NMP as a solvent. A variety of other compounds, including levoglucosenone, 4-(acetylamino)-1,3-benzenediol, acetic acid and chitin-humins, have been identified as side products, based on which a plausible reaction network involved in the process is proposed. Mechanistic investigation by NMR studies and poison tests confirms the formation of a boron complex intermediate during the reaction, shedding light on the promotional effects of boric acid. Kinetic studies show that the depolymerization of the chitin crystalline region is rate-determining, and therefore disruption of the hydrogen bonding in the crystalline region of chitin, either before or during the reaction, is the key to further improving the reaction yields.

Abstract:The feasibility of employing Diels-Alder reaction for improving the grafting efficiency and controllability of poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) towards chitosan (CS) was evaluated. Diene-capped PEG (PEG-diene) was conveniently obtained through thio-acrylate reaction between furfuryl mercaptan and poly( ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEMA). By using sodium dodecyl sulphate-chitosan complex (SCC) as an organo-soluble precursor, the dienophile, (N-(2-carboxyethyl) maleimide), was regioselectively conjugated to the hydroxy groups of chitosan backbone through conventional coupling method. Sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) was then removed from the conjugate simply by precipitating the reaction solution into tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane (Tris) solution to give the chitosan intermediate carrying dienophile moieties (CS-dienophile). In situ H-1-NMR was further used for studying the Diels-Alder reactions between CS-dienophile and PEG-diene. It was found that PEG could be grafted onto chitosan backbone in aqueous media under mild conditions. In addition,the PEG grafts could be detached from the graft copolymers at high temperature through retro Diels-Alder reaction.

Abstract:Ocean-based chitin biomass refinery has gained growing attentions for the renewable production of various nitrogenous chemicals. Herein, a green, simple and efficient approach was put forward to obtain valuable glucosaminic acid (GlcNA) from chitin-derived glucosamine (GlcN) in water under near room temperature and atmospheric air. The highest GlcNA yield of ~85% was achieved under optimal conditions by gold nanoparticles on zinc oxide (Au/ZnO) fabricated by a deposition precipitation (DP) method, without the extra addition of any base or oxidant. The richer surface oxygen vacancies on ZnO was beneficial to generate well-dispersed Au NPs compared to other attempted support species. Au NPs with varied average particle sizes were synthesized by adjusting the catalyst preparation methods and parameters. A good linear relationship was established between TOFs and 1/d, which shows that small-sized (1.5-2 nm), uniformly-dispersed Au NPs on ZnO was important for GlcN oxidation under mild conditions. This study points out a useful direction to improve the oxidative activity of supported Au catalysts and opens new possibilities for mild but effective exploitation of chitin biomass.

Abstract:In this study, glucosaminic acid (GlcNA) was produced with the highest yield of similar to 85% from chitin biomass-derived glucosamine (GlcN) at 35 degrees C under atmospheric air in water, by using zinc oxide-supported gold nanoparticles (Au/ZnO). The Au/ZnO catalyst prepared by the deposition-precipitation (DP) method displayed remarkably superior catalytic performance to that prepared by the deposition-reduction (DR) method, which led to >2-fold enhancement in product yield. A lower apparent activation energy (E-a) was observed over the Au/ZnO (DP) for GlcNA formation compared with the Au/ZnO (DR) catalyst. Based on control tests and structural characterizations, the average particle size of Au nanoparticles (NPs) and the surface oxygen vacancy (O-V) sites were the crucial factors on the catalytic activity. The work puts forward a green, mild and efficient approach to synthesize valuable amino acid from ocean-based chitin biomass resources with air as the oxidant, adding on new possibilities of chitin biorefinery.

Abstract:A new scheme was proposed for synthesizing poly(ethylene glycol)-g-chitosan (PEG-g-CS), where methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) iodide (MPEG-I) (Mn 2000) was used for N-substitution of triphenylmethyl chitosan (TPM-CS) in organic medium. The graft copolymers were obtained by subsequent removal of protecting groups with dichloroacetic acid. By varying PEG-I/TPM-CS feed ratio, the grafting levels (GL) of PEG can be adjusted. The chitosan derivatives were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and DSC. All the copolymers were soluble in water over wide pH range. Furthermore, organosolubility of the hybrids in DMF and DMSO was also achieved when the DS value more than 24%. The lysozyme degradation rate of the copolymers in aqueous neutral medium decreased with the increase of GL value.

Abstract:The exploration of renewable alternatives to fossil fuels for chemical production is indispensable to achieve the ultimate goals of sustainable development. Chitin biomass is an abundant platform feedstock that naturally bears both nitrogen and carbon atoms to produce nitrogen-containing chemicals (including organonitrogen ones and inorganic ammonia). The expansion of biobased chemicals towards nitrogen-containing ones can elevate the economic competitiveness and benefit the biorefinery scheme. This review aims to provide an up-to-date summary on the overall advances of the chitin biorefinery for nitrogen-containing chemical production, with an emphasis on the design of the catalytic systems. Catalyst design, solvent selection, parametric effect and reaction mechanisms have been scrutinized for different transformation strategies. Future prospectives on chitin biorefinery have also been outlined.

Abstract:Purpose Effectual waste utilization from plant as well as marine biomass has gained tremendous importance with reference to sustainability. The valorization of marine biomass produces value added compounds containing not only C, H, O but also renewable N atom in the skeleton which widens the scope for its exploration which may prove to be economically beneficial to the society. Heterogeneous catalytic transformation of marine biomass i.e. N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG) to N -substituted aromatic heterocyclic furan derivatives is reported for the very first time. Cost effective and stable metal oxide catalysts were deployed for the transformation. Catalyst screening study showed that La 2 O 3 was found to be an excellent catalyst for N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG) dehydration which mainly produced 3-acetamidofuran (3AF). Methods The physicochemical properties of the metal oxide catalyst were investigated by various techniques such as XRD, FTIR, MeOH-FTIR, TPD, SEM, N 2 sorption studies and HR-TEM analysis for structure activity relationship. Results The effect of various reaction parameters such as catalyst concentration, reaction temperature, reaction time and solvent effect on dehydration of N-acetyl glucosamine has been studied in detail for higher yields. The results revealed that the presence of weak basic sites which are Brønsted in nature and nano pores present on the surface were responsible for improved dehydration of the chitin biomass to selectively yield 3-acetamidofuran (3AF). La 2 O 3 catalyst showed optimum 50% 3AF yield from N-acetyl glucosamine at 180 °C in 3 h. Conclusion Efficacious exploitation of marine biomass to value added chemicals using heterogeneous catalysts can be extensively exploited. Separation of N -substituted heterocyclic aromatics is the most innovative aspect of the current study. Thus, utilization of heterogeneous catalyst and renewable biomass as a raw material indicates a transition towards more sustainable and greener approach.

Abstract:Direct conversion of chitin to 3-acetamido-5-acetylfuran (3A5AF) in a range of ionic liquids (ILs) has been systematically investigated. 10 ILs with different cations and anions were tested as the solvent and 25 additives were screened. The results revealed that the presence of Cl in the IL is essential. In addition to the solubility enhancement of chitin in Cl containing ILs, the Cl anion appeared to participate in the chitin reaction cycle in IL solvents. 3A5AF can be obtained in some ILs, such as [BMIm]Cl, without any additive. Significantly enhanced yields of 3A5AF were obtained in [BMIm] Cl using boric acid and hydrochloric acid (HCl) as additives at 180 degrees C, a lower temperature than using organic solvents (215 degrees C). Kinetic studies showed that the product formed very quickly within 10 min, with much higher initial rate than using organic solvents. Recovered chitin was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and elemental analysis (EA). In an effort to improve the yield, extraction and distillation were attempted for both chitin and chitin monomer, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (NAG). Further studies were performed on NAG to see if acidic ILs would lead to enhanced reactivity. However, these were less effective.

Abstract:APS is a cheap and eco-friendly oxidant which enables one-step extraction of nanochitin (NCh) from fishery wastes. However, it is challenging to improve the preparation efficiency and NCh quality simultaneously, owing to the uneven or uncontrollable oxidation. Herein, we propose a simple and controllable way to isolate chitin nanofibers (ChNFs) from squid pen by gradient heating activated (GHA)- ammonium persulfate (APS) oxidation. Compared to the isothermal activated (ITA)-APS oxidation, our strategy reduced the mass ratio of squid pen to APS from 1:45 to 1:6 and reaction time from 15 h to 8 h. Meanwhile, the as-prepared ChNFs exhibited high yield (91.5 %), light transmittance (98 % at 500 nm), crystallinity index (96.9 %), and carboxyl content (1.53 mmol/g). GHA-APS oxidation involved multiple continuous heating and isothermal stages. The former stimulates a moderate activation of APS and enhances the oxidation rate, while the latter provides a duration for surface chemistry. This non-isothermal heating facilitates the continuous decomposition of APS at a relatively high and consistent rate, thereby enhances its oxidation efficiency. Furthermore, green assessments indicate this method is simple, time-saving, eco-friendly and cost-effective. Overall, this work introduces a novel perspective for the industrial extraction of high-efficiency and high-quality nanomaterials.

Abstract:Chitosan oligosaccharide and its derivatives are known for their diverse biological activities. In this study, we communicate a convenient one‐pot synthesis of N,N‐dimethyl chitosan oligosaccharide (DMCOS) from chitin via acid‐catalyzed tandem depolymerization‐deacetylation‐N‐methylation pathway using formaldehyde as the methylation reagent. The synthesis protocol offers 77% DMCOS that features a high degree of deacetylation, a high degree of methylation, and a low average molecular weight. Compared to chitosan, DMCOS exhibits superior antifungal activity against Candida species. Mechanism study reveals a previously non‐reported hydroxyl group‐assisted effect that facilitates the reductive amination reaction under strong acidic conditions. Overall, our findings demonstrate the feasibility of direct synthesis of DMCOS from chitin, highlighting its potential use in anti‐fungal applications.

Abstract:A novel N-doped carbon supported Rh catalyst was developed via one-pot pyrolysis of chitin and (NH4)(3)RhCl6. The catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity and recyclability for the hydrogenation of benzoic acid to cyclohexane carboxylic acid. Characterization indicated that the high catalytic performance of Rh/N-C-700 is mainly attributed to the proportion of Rh to Rh3+ and Rh particle size. More importantly, this novel synthesis strategy significantly increased the interaction between Rh nano particles and N-doped carbon in contrast with the conventional impregnation and NaBH4 reduction methods, thus preventing the Rh nanoparticles from migration, aggregation, and leaching from the support surface and therefore improving the reusability of the catalyst. This synthetic method may pave a new way for producing N-doped carbon supported metal catalysts from chitin on a large scale, which is attractive for industrial applications.

Abstract:Glucosamine (GlcN) is a widely utilized amino monosaccharide. It is traditionally synthesized from N‐acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) via chemical processes that pose environmental threats. In pursuit of a greener alternative, our investigation explored biocatalysis with a Pantoea dispersa derived deacetylase (Pd‐nagA), showcasing its efficacy as a catalyst in GlcN production. As a result, this work provides a comprehensive characterization of Pd‐nagA, scrutinizes its enzymatic behavior, and delves into the deacetylation mechanism in detail. Heterologous expression methods were utilized for the production and isolation of Pd‐nagA, followed by a kinetic evaluation highlighting its enzymatic activity. The complex interactions between the enzyme and its substrate were investigated by integrating classical molecular dynamics, quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics simulations, funnel metadynamics, and on‐the‐fly probability enhanced sampling techniques, thereby elucidating the precise deacetylation pathway. Rigorous computational analysis results demonstrated that Pd‐nagA exhibited promising specificity and efficiency for GlcNAc with a high turnover rate. The catalytic residues central to the reaction were identified, and the underlying quantum reaction mechanism was detailed. Our findings suggest an approach to GlcN production using eco‐friendly biocatalysis, positioning Pd‐nagA at the forefront of industrial application not only because of its remarkable catalytic capabilities but also due to its potential for enzyme optimization.

Abstract:Global warming and rising waste content collectively accelerate the development of renewable-derived ‘low-carbon’ chemical technologies. Among all abundant renewables, marine-/food-waste-derived chitin, the only nitrogen-containing sustainable biomass, contains the unique N-acetylglucosamine units, which could be synthetically manipulated to a plethora of organonitrogen chemicals. Herein, we report the efficient one-step catalytic valorization of chitin to N-acylethanolamine over cost-effective Ni/CeO2-based materials, which interestingly demonstrate shape-based reactivity based on CeO2 supports. In general, all three catalysts (Ni on cubic-, rod-, and polyhedral-shaped CeO2 supports) were active for this reaction, but they differed in their catalytic efficiency and time-monitored reaction profiles. Herein, Ni on cubic-shaped CeO2 delivered relatively better and stable catalytic performance, along with its rod-shaped counterpart, while the polyhedral CeO2-based material also delivered decent performance. Such interesting catalytic behavior has been corroborated by their physicochemical properties, as revealed by their characterization studies. Herein, to establish an appropriate structure-property-reactivity relationship, multimodal characterization techniques and control mechanistic experiments have been performed. This work demonstrates a concept to reduce the consumption of primary carbon resources and increase the utilization of secondary waste materials to facilitate a smooth transition from a linear economy (cf. cradle-to-grave model) to a circular economy (cf. cradle-to-cradle model).

Abstract:Propylene glycol (or) 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PD) is an important polyol widely used for pharmaceuticals, polyester resins, paints, cosmetics, antifreeze, etc. Sucrose has emerged as a promising feedstock to produce 1,2-PD, as indicated by recent research findings. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4/gCN) was synthesized by using different crucibles. Ni–Mo was loaded on different g-C3N4 supports via the wetness impregnation method for sucrose hydrogenolysis. Effects of different g-C3N4 supports were studied. Catalysts with varying Ni (x = 0–8 wt %) and Mo (y = 0–15 wt %) contents were characterized using XRD, BET, XPS, FE-SEM, Py-FTIR, HR-TEM, TPD (CO2)and Raman spectroscopy. An attempt was made on sucrose conversion into 1,2-PD using a Ni–Mo/g-C3N4 catalyst. The catalyst containing 8% Ni and 10% Mo on Gr-gCN exhibited the best performance, achieving complete sucrose conversion with a 76% yield of 1,2-PD under mild reaction conditions. The presence of highly dispersed nanoparticles and the nature of graphitic carbon nitride help improve the reactions’ yield by allowing reactions at lower temperatures, reducing the occurrence of side reactions, and increasing recycling rates. A straightforward approach to material preparation, coupled with the exceptional dispersion of metal nanoparticles, paves the way for a novel platform for biomass conversion.

The Role of Primary Amines in Modified Chitosan to Enhance the Aldol Condensation of Biomass-Derived Carbonyl Compounds

Abstract:Aldol condensation is a key step for converting the lignocellulosic platform compounds to fuel. The catalyst used in the aldol condensation requires the avoidance of the overactivation of aldehyde groups while fully activating ketone carbonyl groups. Herein, the modified chitosan (NaOH/CT-0.6) was applied for the efficient syntheses of single condensation product from biomass-derived furfural (FFR) and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), achieving an 87.01% yield of C11 at 60 degrees C and 3 h. Catalyst characterization revealed that the exposure of -NH2 groups in chitosan after modification led to the formation of the imine with the C--O groups of FFR. It was confirmed that the imine formation avoided the overactivation of aldehyde groups and improved cross-condensation product yield. Furthermore, the theoretical feasibility of the imine catalytic path was elucidated through DFT simulation and in situ DRIFTS analysis. Finally, the obtained condensation products were subjected to hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) over the 2 wt% Pd/Nb2O5, obtaining the hydrocarbon components suitable for bio-jet fuels. This work contributes significantly to the design of novel catalysts for aldol condensation reactions and the efficient conversion of biomass.

Abstract:The "shell biorefinery," which valorizes the shell waste chitin into fine chemicals, has developed rapidly in recent years. Herein, we present a novel base-free heteropolyacid-catalyzed oxidation method for the transformation of chitin biomass into organic acid. After a series of optimization experiments, a 5.93 % yield of formic acid and 25.09 % yield of acetic acid were achieved in the presence of 0.5 equivalent of Mo-V-P heteropolyacids (H 4 PMo 11 VO 40 ·2H 2 O) and air at 180 °C under hydrothermal conditions for 4 h. Meanwhile, we have demonstrated that the Keggin-type heteropolyacid catalysts are capable of efficiently converting microcrystalline chitin into organic acids. The synthesized heteropolyacids are well characterized with FT-IR, XRD, ICP-AES, and TGA. The possible reaction pathway was speculated accordingly. This method offers several advantages, including readily available raw materials, simple operation, and relatively higher yield.
