Abstract:We have developed an effective route for obtaining 5-hydroxymethylfurfural with a yield of 92.6 mol% from the dehydration of fructose in N,N-dimethylformamide using a mixture of AlCl3, H2SO4 and H3PO4 as catalyst. The NMR analysis showed the intermediate formed among fructose, AlCl3 and H3PO4 plays an important role in the novel result.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), mainly synthesized by the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), is a biobased monomer for high-performance polymers. In this work, we have a comprehensive investigation on the rapid and highly selective oxidation process of HMF to FDCA in acetic acid (HAc) with Co/Mn/Br catalyst and air as the oxidant. It was found that both aldehyde and hydroxymethyl functional groups of HMF could be first oxidized in the sequential oxidation of HMF to FDCA, but 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was the main oxidation intermediate. Apart from the side reaction of HMF overoxidation to COx (CO and CO2) and HMF condensation to polymers, a small part of HMF will be further oxidized to maleic acid (MA) and fumaric acid (FA) via the ring-opening reactions under severe conditions because of the instability of furan ring. To reduce the side reactions and maximize the FDCA yield, the effects of temperature, pressure, substrate solvent ratio, catalyst composition and concentration, and water concentration on the main reactions and side reactions of the HMF oxidation were systematically evaluated. Under the optimum conditions, the selectivity of FDCA reached 92% with the total conversion of HMF in less than 20 min at a high mass ratio of substrate and solvent (1/9), and the purity of FDCA exceeded 99.8%. The experimental results provide a great reference and inspiration for the optimization of the HMF oxidation process and the large-scale production of FDCA.

Abstract:This work presents experimental and kinetic modeling studies on fructose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in the solution of mixed acetone and water, catalyzed by hydrochloric acid (HCl). A reaction scheme that added an intermediate was proposed. A corresponding kinetic model that considered the parameters, including temperature (383-423 K), initial substrate concentration (10-100 g/L), and catalyst concentration (5-60 mmol/L), was established, and the influence of solvent ratio (3-19) was also studied. The maximum yield was 91% in the ideal plug flow reactor under the optimized condition (T = 383 K, C-F0 = 10 g/L, C-HCl = 10 mmol/L). The model can well support the delicate reactor design since an industrially accessible HMF production process was proposed in this work.

Abstract:Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) reaction is considered as a potential route for upgrading bio-based carbonyl compounds to their corresponding alcohols. Herein, ordered mesoporous N-doped carbon confined Co-N-x (Co-NC) was adopted as a catalyst for converting cellulose-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandimethanol (FDM) using formic acid (FA) as a hydrogen donor. Different catalysts and preparation methods were screened, by varying cobalt phases and template removal procedures. It is found that highly dispersed N-confined Co species (Co-N-x) other than naked Co NPs acted as catalytic species for the CTH of HMF with FA, which gave 86% yield of FDM at 100% HMF conversion. Kinetic experiments revealed that, compared with molecular hydrogen, Co-NC could effectively accelerate HMF hydrogenation and suppress as-formed FDM hydrogenolysis in the presence of FA, which is ascribed to its superior activity toward hydrogen transfer from FA and fast desorption toward FDM. Mechanism studies indicated that C-H dissociation of FA could be the rate-determining step in the CTH reaction, and the hydrogenation of HMF could proceed through an intermolecular hydride transfer route. This work shows that the bifunctional nature of the catalyst is critical in the efficient CTH of biomass-derived carbonyl compounds and provides insights toward the rational design of such catalysts.

Abstract:Developing an efficient and selective catalyst for the dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is significant for biomass conversion. Herein, a metal-organic framework (MOF) with acidity and strong hydrophobicity is first reported by the condensation of amino-tagged MOFs with mercapto carboxylic acids and subsequent oxidation. The hydrophobic acidic MOFs possess acid densities ranging from 0.2−1.0 mmol·g−1, H2O contact angles of 114°−125°, and specific surface areas above 260 m2·g−1. Compared to the methyl sulfo-functionalized MOF, the benzene sulfo-functionalized MOF with a strong hydrophobicity shows much higher activity and selectivity for the conversion of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. In particular, 2.99% (mass) UiO-PhSO3H shows the best catalytic performance with a 90.4% HMF yield due to its suitable hydrophobicity and abundant acidic sites. Moreover, the catalyst shows great stability after recycling for 5 runs. This work provides an interesting design strategy for the preparation of hydrophobic acidic MOFs and shows the powerful synergistic effect of acidity and hydrophobicity.

Abstract:With the dwindling availability of fossil fuel resources and the dramatic increase in demand, 5-methoxymethylfurfural (MMF) obtained from renewable biomass resources has great potential as a fossil fuel alternative. In this work, a high yield (80.5%) of MMF was obtained from fructose catalyzed by Amberlyst-15 with the assistance of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in methanol at 100 degrees C for 10 h. Based on a detailed investigation of the reaction mechanism through the effects of DMSO, Amberlyst-15, reaction time, and reaction temperature on MMF yield and the existence of intermediates proved by FTIR, a two-step pathway was proposed: (1) DMSO and H ion on Amberlyst-15 act as a joint-catalyst [DMSOH](+), facilitating the dehydration of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and (2) [DMSOH](+) assists the etherification of HMF with methanol into MMF, which is the rate-determining step. This finding expands the concept of biomass conversion into biomass fuels and plays a vital role in catalyst screen and design, reaction medium selection, and industrial applications.

Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be widely converted into value-added chemicals and fuels production. Herein, we reported a sustainable and efficient approach for synthesizing HMF directly from cellulose. Facile formylation of cellulose with green and recyclable formic acid was developed for cellulose formate (CF) production. CF with special net-like structure and high degree of formyl substitution was prepared. The resultant CF exhibited excellent catalytic conversion and selectivity for HMF production comparable to monomeric glucose as reactant in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-H2O media. In our work, we presented molecular dynamics simulations to elaborate the preferential coordination of DMSO around formyl group, which promoted the solvation of formylated substrate in DMSO-H2O mixture, and the HMF yielded could be protected by DMSO without further degradation to levulinic acid or humins.

Abstract:A benzenesulfonic acid-functionalized MOF is prepared.The catalyst has a strong hydrophobic network and high acid density.98.0% yield of HMF is obtained in the dehydration of fructose.The sulfonated metal-organic framework is stable for recycling.In the dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF), in situ produced water weakens the acid strength of the catalyst and causes the rehydration of HMF, causing unsatisfactory catalytic activity and selectivity. In this work, a class of benzenesulfonic acid-grafted metal-organic frameworks with strong acidity and hydrophobicity is obtained by the direct sulfonation method using 4-chlorobenzenesulfonic acid as sulfonating agent. The resultant MOFs have a specific surface area of greater than 250 m2·g-1, acid density above 1.0 mmol·g-1, and water contact angle up to 129°. The hydrophobic MOF-PhSO3H exhibits both higher catalytic activity and selectivity than MOF-SO3H in the HMF synthesis due to its better hydrophobicity and olephilicity. Moreover, the catalyst has a high recycled stability. At last, fructose is completely converted, and 98.0% yield of HMF is obtained under 120 °C in a DMSO solvent system. The successful preparation of the hydrophobic acidic MOF provides a novel hydrophobic catalyst for the synthesis of HMF.

Abstract:A novel carbon-based solid acid, which was prepared by a facile and eco-friendly approach from glucose and p-toluenesulfonic acid (TsOH), was used to catalyze fructose dehydration into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) for the first time and exhibits excellent catalytic performance. As high as 91.2% yield of HMF was achieved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at 130 degrees C after only 1.5 h. Besides, this catalyst also displayed a good reusability.

Abstract:In pursuit of designing a bio-based catalyst for the dehydration of biomass (i.e., fructose) to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, a novel catalytic composite was prepared by in-situ formation of an Al-based metal–organic framework in the presence of chitosan. To enhance the acidity of the as-prepared catalyst, it was sulfonated with chlorosulfonic acid. Various characterization techniques, including XRD, XPS, FTIR, SEM/EDX, TGA, and elemental mapping analysis were applied to validate the formation of the acidic composite. Fructose dehydration conditions were also optimized using Response Surface Method (RSM) and it was found that reaction in the presence of catalyst (23 wt%) in DMSO, at 110 °C for 40 min led to the formation of HMF in 97.1%. Noteworthy, the catalyst was recyclable and stable up to five runs with a minor reduction in its activity.

Abstract:The conversion of macromolecular saccharides (fructose, glucose, sucrose, and inulin) to 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is often limited by the mass transfer resistance of existing catalysts. Herein, a 2D metal‐organic framework (NUS‐8‐PhSO3H) containing high densities of dual acidic sites (Lewis and Brønsted acid sites) was developed for the first time by diazo grafting. Characterization results and reaction kinetics showed that the rapid molecular diffusion leads to an unusual pseudozeroth reaction order and a considerably lower apparent activation energy for the fructose reaction over NUS‐8‐PhSO3H in contrast to the first order and higher activation energy over 3D counterpart (NUS‐16‐PhSO3H) and reported catalysts. In addition, NUS‐8‐PhSO3H can also produce substantially high HMF yields and has a low activation energy for other saccharides (glucose, sucrose, and inulin) by powerful tandem steps, including polysaccharide hydrolysis, glucose isomerization, and fructose dehydration. The preparation of hydrophobic acidic NUS‐8‐PhSO3H provides an efficient means of synthesizing HMF from various saccharides. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Biomass is an abundant and sustainable resource that can be converted into energy and chemicals. Therefore, the development of efficient methods for the conversion of biomass into platform intermediates is crucial. In this study, the one-pot conversion of sugars into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural was achieved using the metal-organic framework combined with metal ions [MIL-101(Cr)] as a high-activity catalyst, and a deep eutectic solvent (choline chloride and lactic acid) as a green solvent. The optimal temperature, time, amount of catalyst used, and amount of deep eutectic solvent used were all determined. The highest HMF yield of 49.74% and furfural yield of 55.90% were obtained. The recyclability of the catalysts and deep eutectic solvent was also investigated. After three reaction runs, the HMF yield was still nearly 30.00%. Finally, the MIL-101(Cr) catalytic system was selected to study the kinetic mechanism underlying the conversion of glucose into HMF.

Abstract:A novel bio-based catalyst was developed by in-situ forming Chromium(III) (Cr)-based metal-organic framework, MIL-101(Cr), in the presence of k -carrageenan ( k -Car) and followed by a post-synthetic modification to introduce additional –SO 3 H functional groups into the composite structure of k -Car/MIL-101(Cr). Different analyses were conducted to confirm the successful catalyst formation. The catalyst performance was evaluated in the solid acid catalyzed dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The Response Surface Method (RSM) optimization determined that employing 33 wt% of the catalyst at 105 °C for 40 min resulted in a remarkable 97.8 % yield. The catalyst demonstrated suitable recyclability, maintaining its catalytic efficiency over four cycles. Comparative studies with k -Car and the non-sulfonated composite highlighted the superior activity of the catalyst, emphasizing the synergy between the k -Car, MIL-101(Cr) and the influence of –SO 3 H post-functionalizing on the catalytic performance.

Abstract:A novel sulfonated carbonaceous material was prepared through carbonization and sulfonation of a melamine formaldehyde resin, which was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), BET, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis and acidity measurement. The prepared sulfonated carbonaceous material was used to catalyze fructose dehydration to prepare 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), and the effects of solvents, catalyst dosage, reaction temperature, reaction time and fructose concentration on 5-HMF yield were investigated. The results show that 5-HMF yield of 79.8%could be obtained in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) under the following optimum reaction conditions:the catalyst dosage is 5% of fructose input, reaction temperature 180℃, reaction time 30 min and fructose concentration 0.025 g×mL-1. 5-HMF yield only decreased 7.1% after the catalyst was reused for five times, which indicates good reusability of the catalyst.

Abstract:Glucose conversion to 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) generally undergoes catalytic isomerization reaction by Lewis acids followed by the catalytical dehydration to HMF with Brönsted acid. In this work, a sulfonic acid functionalized metal‐organic framework MIL‐101(Cr)‐SO3H containing both Lewis acid and Brönsted acid sites, was examined as the catalyst for γ‐valerolactone‐mediated cascade reaction of glucose dehydration into HMF. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the batch heterogeneous reaction gave a HMF yield of 44.9% and selectivity of 45.8%. Reaction kinetics suggested that the glucose isomerization in GVL with 10 wt % water follows the second‐order kinetics with an apparent activation energy of 100.9 kJ mol−1. Continuous reaction in the fixed‐bed reactor showed that the catalyst is highly stable and able to provide a steady HMF yield. Abstract:One-pot conversion of furfural to the target product γ-valerolactone (GVL) is a challenging and meaningful part of biomass exploitation. Development of heterogeneous catalysts with both Brønsted and Lewis acid properties has proved to be promising and useful because they offer an efficient way to tandem cascade reactions from furfural to GVL. Herein, we successfully synthesized sulfated DUT-67(Hf), a novel bifunctional catalyst, via a post-synthetic modification method. The prepared sulfated DUT-67(Hf) was characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, N2 adsorption-desorption, Elemental (N, C, H, S) analyses, situ infrared spectra of pyridine adsorptions, XPS, FT-IR, TG, and NH3-TPD. The acidity of the catalysts could be adjusted by submersion in different concentrations of aqueous sulfuric acid, giving 0.01 mol/L sulfuric acid for 0.42 mmol/g acidity to 0.1 mol/L sulfuric acid for 2.16 mmol/g acidity. Sulfated DUT-67(Hf) possessed by 0.06 mol/L aqueous sulfuric acid exhibited optimal catalytic activity and showed an 87.1% yield of GVL under the conditions of 180 °C after 24 h of reaction. Moreover, the mechanism of introducing Brønsted acid sites into DUT-67(Hf) and the better hydrogen donors was also investigated through contrasting experiments.<h5>Graphical abstract</h5>Bifunctional Hf-based MOFs were successfully synthesized as active catalyst for the one-pot conversion of furfural to γ-valerolactone.

Abstract:Because of limited framework stability tolerance, denovo synthesis of sulfonated covalent organic frameworks (COFs) remains challenging and unexplored. Herein, a sulfonated two-dimensional crystalline COF, termed TFP-DABA, was synthesized directly from 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol and 2,5-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid through a previously reported Schiff base condensation reaction, followed by irreversible enol-to-keto tautomerization, which strengthened its structural stability. TFP-DABA is a highly efficient solid acid catalyst for fructose conversion with remarkable yields (97% for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and 65% for 2,5-diformylfuran), good chemoselectivity, and good recyclability. Recent Advances in Metal-organic Frameworks Based Heterogeneous Catalysts for Furfural Hydrogenation Reaction

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) based heterogeneous catalysts have been widely used in furfural (FFR) hydrogenation. As numerous studies related to the conversion of FFR to high value-added chemicals, it is urgently necessary to thoroughly review the recent research progress for better achieving the commercial application in the future. This review summarized recent advances, classified by different reaction paths, relating to the upgrading of FFR over MOF-based heterogeneous catalysts, including MOFs, MOF derivatives and MOF composites. In addition, some critical issues and perspectives in the hydrogenation of FFR to high-value-added chemicals over MOF-based catalysts were also summarized. This review will provide valuable guidance for the preparation and rational design of MOF-based heterogeneous catalysts for upgrading FFR to high-value-added chemicals.
