Abstract:Diglycerol obtained from biomass glycerol has been valorized into selective products by acetalization reaction in the presence of ZnCl2. A synthesis method of monoacetals via catalyst-transfer is carried out encompassing two phase-separated reagents, diglycerol with n-octanal. Mechanistic analysis has revealed that the formation of unstable emulsion promotes the reaction, and the selectivity is affected by the catalyst-transfer direction. By measuring the Zn content in the two phases, we demonstrated the transfer direction of ZnCl2 and the monoacetal were opposite, resulting in separation of the catalyst and the substrate. And the formation of diacetal was retarded. The products monoacetals exhibit superior surfactant properties, especially in terms of foam stability and alkali tolerance.

Abstract:Glycerol, derived from biodiesel production, is a renewable feedstock for the production of value-added chemicals. Herein, we report an investigation of the acetalization of glycerol with n-octanal by homogeneous acid catalysis in the absence of a solvent, using p-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, and sulfuric acid, respectively, as catalysts. p-Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, a surfactant-type Bronsted acid, proved to be an excellent catalyst capable of efficiently promoting the reaction under solvent-free conditions, and the yields of glycerol acetals reached 99% under the optimal conditions. The distribution of five-and six-membered cyclic acetal regioisomers varied depending on the reaction time and temperature. Moreover, the amphiphilic properties of the products, with different ratios of five-to six-membered cyclic acetals, have been evaluated by surface tension measurements.

Abstract:A novel series of biobased branched nonionic surfactants (ethoxylated dihydroxy stearic acid methyl ester, DMOEn) was synthesized and characterized. DMOEn was based on a hydroxyoctadecanoic acid methyl ester, which was obtained from renewable oleic acid in waste cooking oil. These new polyoxyethylene surfactants contained double hydrophilic and hydrophobic chains, which shows the surface properties of the branched surfactant. The synthesis rules and reaction kinetic were studied in detail. The physicochemical properties and surface properties of the DMOEn with different degrees of ethoxylation at various concentrations were investigated. The surface tension results indicate that DMOEn reduced the surface tension reduction and increased the diffusion rate in aqueous solution. The dynamic contact angle, foaming ability and emulsifying capacity tests showed that the DMOEn exhibited good wetting performance, low foaming, rapid defoaming and an excellent emulsifying ability, which shows that the surfactant has potential application in industrial cleaning.

Abstract:Triacylglycerides are naturally abundant and renewable feedstock for biofuels and chemicals. In this report, these seemingly stable compounds are shown to be reactive toward a variety of sulfonamides under Lewis acid catalysis. In these reactions, alkyl C(sp 3 )–O bonds are cleaved and C–N bonds constructed, providing functionalized value-added products directly from renewables. Mechanistic and scope study demonstrate that the origin of the reactivity could be the synergy of Lewis acid catalysis and neighboring group participation by the 2- or 3-acyloxy or acylamido group with respect to the reactive site. Since poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), a widely available consumer polyester, also contains 1,2-diol diester group as the repeating unit in the main chain, this chemistry can also be applied to efficient depolymerization of PET.

Abstract:Trimethylolpropane fatty acid triester (TFATE) is a promising biolubricant as an environmentally friendly substitute to conventional mineral-based lubricants. However, the issues of extensive energy consumption from vacuum maintenance and feedstock saponification caused by strong alkaline catalysts exist in current TFATEbased biolubricant synthesis. Here, sustainable production of biolubricant was achieved with methyl oleate (MO) from non-edible oil sources as the feedstock and moderate alkaline K2CO3 as the catalyst. Nitrogen gas stripping method instead of vacuum was adopted for methanol removal. The effects of agitation speed, N-2 flow rate, catalyst amount, MO to trimethylolpropane (TMP) molar ratio and temperature on MO conversion and TFATE selectivity were examined. The TFATE selectivity reached 95.6% under the optimized conditions. Leaching tests indicated neglectable K2CO3 dissolution in reaction products. The kinetic parameters for the three consecutive transesterification reactions were calculated. In addition, the synthesized biolubricants exhibit low acid value and volatility, moderate iodine value, superior thermal stability, and good rheological and frictional properties.

Abstract:Hypothesis A critical challenge in the enzymatic conversion of acylglycerols is the limited exposure of the enzyme dissolved in the aqueous solution to the hydrophobic substrate in the oil phase. Positioning the enzyme in a microenvironment with balanced hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity in Pickering emulsion will facilitate the acylglycerol-catalyzing reactions at the interface between the oil and liquid phases. Experiments In this work, to overcome the challenge of biphasic catalysis, we report a method to immobilize enzymes in polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based hydrogel microparticles (HMPs) at the interface between the oil and water phases in Pickering emulsion to promote the enzymatic conversion of acylglycerols. Findings 3¬Ýwt% of HMPs can stabilize the oil-in-water Pickering emulsion for at least 14¬Ýdays and increase the viscosity of emulsions. Lipase-HMP conjugates showed significantly higher hydrolytic activity in Pickering emulsion; HMP-immobilized lipase SMG1 showed an activity about three times that of free lipase SMG1. Co-immobilization of a lipase and a fatty acid photodecarboxylase from Chlorella variabilis (CvFAP) in Pickering emulsion enables light-driven cascade conversion of triacylglycerols to hydrocarbons, transforming waste oil to renewable biofuels in a green and sustainable approach. HMPs stabilize the Pickering emulsion and promote interfacial biocatalysis in converting acylglycerols to renewable biofuels.

Abstract:There is growing global demand to transition to more sustainable surfactant technologies. Towards this vision, bio‐based surfactants and biosurfactants are being explored as alternatives to traditional petrochemical surfactants. However, the transition towards these technologies is expected to be gradual, therefore there is a critical need to formulate new biosurfactants in combination with traditional surfactant classes such as alkoxylates, sulfates and amine‐oxides to achieve a balance of performance, cost, and sustainability. To this end, we report a study of the impact of sophorolipid biosurfactants on the cloud point of alcohol ethoxylates, and on the surface tension and foaming of alkyl sulfate/amine‐oxide mixtures. We make the surprising finding that high‐acid sophorolipids can act as highly efficient hydrotropes and increase the cloud point of alcohol ethoxylates. In sulfate/amine‐oxide mixtures, models of experimental data suggest that both high‐acid and high‐lactone sophorolipids can replace 40–50% of the primary surfactants without significant changes to the surface tension or foaming performance. These findings will enable the next‐generation of high performing sustainable cleaning formulations to be realized.

Abstract:This study describes the synthesis of a new class of surfactants that is based on the bioderived building blocks fructose, fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), and hydroxy propionitrile (cyanoethanol, 3-HP). The synthesis is scalable, is carried out at ambient conditions, and does not require chromatography. The produced surfactants have excellent surfactant properties with critical micelle concentrations and Krafft points comparable to current glucose-based surfactants.

Abstract:The utilization of Pickering emulsions in interfacial catalysis offers a promising environmental platform for biphasic reactions. However, complicated surface coating or chemical grafting methods are always required to prepare the surface-active catalysts for the Pickering emulsions, since most of them are commercially unavailable. Here, we report CO2-switchable Pickering emulsions for biphasic reactions, in which Pd@Al2O3 nanoparticles are in situ modified by a CO2/N2 responsive surfactant. Compared with the chemical grafted methods, the in situ formed Pickering interfacial catalysts avoid complex chemical modification. Furthermore, efficient demulsification and separation of the oil phase and the products without surfactant contaminations can be achieved by CO2 trigger. The Pickering interfacial catalysis system can also be reformed after the aqueous phase containing the catalyst nanoparticles, and the surfactant is recycled and reused. The strategy is universal for nitrobenzene reductions and alcohol oxidations, providing a convenient and green method for the preparation of Pickering catalysts with commercially available nanoparticles, efficient emulsion separation, and recovery of the catalyst nanoparticles and emulsifiers in various two-phase organic reactions.

Abstract:Biosurfactants have garnered increased attention lately due to their superiority of their properties over fossil-derived counterparts. While the cost of production remains a significant hurdle to surpass synthetic surfactants, biosurfactants have been anticipated to gain a larger market share in the coming decades. Among these, glycolipids, a type of low-molecular-weight biosurfactant, stand out for their efficacy in reducing surface and interfacial tension, which made them highly sought-after for various surfactant-related applications. Glycolipids are composed of hydrophilic carbohydrate moieties linked to hydrophobic fatty acid chains through ester bonds that mainly include rhamnolipids, trehalose lipids, sophorolipids, and mannosylerythritol lipids. This review highlights the current landscape of glycolipids and covers specific glycolipid productivity and the diverse range of products found in the global market. Applications such as bioremediation, food processing, petroleum refining, biomedical uses, and increasing agriculture output have been discussed. Additionally, the latest advancements in production cost reduction for glycolipid and the challenges of utilizing second-generation feedstocks for sustainable production are also thoroughly examined. Overall, this review proposes a balance between environmental advantages, economic viability, and societal benefits through the optimized integration of secondary feedstocks in biosurfactant production.

Valorization of waste engine oil to mono- and di-rhamnolipid in a sustainable approach to circular bioeconomy

Abstract:This study aims to valorize waste engine oil (WEO) for synthesizing economically viable biosurfactants (rhamnolipids) to strengthen the circular bioeconomy concept. It specifically focuses on investigating the influence of key bioprocess parameters, viz. agitation and aeration rates, on enhancing rhamnolipid yield in a fed-batch fermentation mode. The methodology involves conducting experiments in a stirred tank bioreactor (3 L) using Pseudomonas aeruginosa gi |KP 163922| as the test organism. Central composite design and response surface methodology (CCD-RSM) are employed to design the experiments and analyze the effects of agitation and aeration rates on various parameters, including dry cell biomass (DCBM), surface tension, tensoactivity, and rhamnolipid yield. It is also essential to determine the mechanistic pathway of biosurfactant production followed by the strain using complex hydrophobic substrates such as WEO. The study reveals that optimal agitation and aeration rates of 200 rpm and 1 Lpm result in the highest biosurfactant yield of 29.76 g/L with minimal surface tension (28 mN/m). Biosurfactant characterization using FTIR, 1 H NMR, and UPLC-MS/MS confirm the presence of dominant molecular ion peaks m/z 543.9 and 675.1. This suggests that the biosurfactant is a mixture of mono- and di-rhamnolipids (RhaC10C10, RhaRhaC10C12:1, RhaRhaC12:1C10). The findings present a sustainable approach for biosurfactant production in a fed-batch bioreactor. This research opens the possibility of exploring the use of pilot or large-scale bioreactors for biosurfactant production in future investigations.

Oil solubilization in sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate micelles: New insights into surfactant enhanced oil recovery

Abstract:Hypothesis: The current mechanism of surfactant enhanced oil recovery (EOR) mainly relies on forming middle-phase microemulsions to get ultra-low oil-water interfacial tension. However, residual oil can also be recovered using low concentration surfactant solutions without microemulsion formation, and the interaction between the surfactant solution and crude oil at very early contact has not been studied yet. We hypothesize micelle solubilization of oil as an alternative EOR mechanism. Experiments: Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS), anisole and 1-hexene were used as a model surfactant and model polar and nonpolar compounds in crude oil, respectively. The interaction between SDBS micelles and these two additives was investigated with dynamic light scattering, UV-Vis spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, confocal microscope and small angle neutron scattering. Findings: SDBS micelles become larger upon increasing additive concentration to transfer into swollen micelles. 1-Hexene is localized in the micelle core, and retains the spherical micelle shape, while anisole resides in the palisade layer and weakens the electrostatic repulsions among surfactant headgroups, inducing a sphere-rod transition. No emulsion droplets were observed for 0.2 wt% SDBS solution until 1.5 wt% anisole or 1-hexene was introduced. These findings help understanding the role surfactant micelles in EOR and propose a new mechanism for surfactant EOR processes.

Abstract:The synthesis of surfactants from fatty acid esters via epoxide chemistry has been known for its accompanying challenges, which usually involve the use of toxic homogeneous catalysts in the ring-opening reaction step and generation of many side reaction products. This paper presents environmentally benign routes to a library of nonionic surfactants via a three-step synthesis involving transesterification of methyl oleate to alkyl oleates, epoxidation of the oleate alkene, and solventless heterogeneously catalyzed ring opening of the epoxides with poly(ethylene glycols) of varying chain length under a short reaction time (60 min). The processes were highly atom efficient and afforded a minimum surfactant yield of 80% with limited or negligible side reaction products. The intermediate molecules and synthesized surfactants were purified and comprehensively characterized, including physicochemical measurements: dynamic surface tension and equilibrium surface tension. Additionally, the hydrophilic- lipophilic balance (HLB) concept was used to comprehensively scan through the polarity behaviors of the surfactants' head and tail in solution as a prediction of their end use. The results showed that surfactants have a critical micelle concentration (CMC) lower than 0.1 mg/ml as the alkyl oleate increases in length from ethyl to decyl and that the lower-molecular-weight surfactants reached equilibrium faster than the higher-molecular-weight surfactants. HLB results showed that the surfactants can be applied as oil-in water emulsifiers, detergents, solubilizers, and wetting agents. In general, the synthesized surfactants potentially possess switchable properties for use in industrial formulations, as the alkyl chain length and the ethylene oxide number in the surfactant's structure are varied.

Abstract:Carbohydrate-based surfactants are amphiphilic compounds containing hydrophilic moieties linked to hydrophobic aglycones. More specifically, carbohydrate esters are biosourced and biocompatible surfactants derived from inexpensive renewable raw materials (sugars and fatty acids). Their unique properties allow them to be used in various areas, such as the cosmetic, food, and medicine industries. These multi-applications have created a worldwide market for biobased surfactants and consequently expectations for their production. Biobased surfactants can be obtained from various processes, such as chemical synthesis or microorganism culture and surfactant purification. In accordance with the need for more sustainable and greener processes, the synthesis of these molecules by enzymatic pathways is an opportunity. This work presents a state-of-the-art lipase action mode, with a focus on the active sites of these proteins, and then on four essential parameters for optimizing the reaction: type of lipase, reaction medium, temperature, and ratio of substrates. Finally, this review discusses the latest trends and recent developments, showing the unlimited potential for optimization of such enzymatic syntheses.

Abstract:As the global surfactant market continues to expand, there is an increasing need to develop bio‐based alternatives in the shift towards a circular economy. This study focuses on the synthesis of polar, amphoteric, amine‐oxide surfactants starting from biomass‐derived monosaccharides and demonstrating their potential in various applications. The synthesis involved a reductive amination of the sugars with an alkylamine and formaldehyde followed by oxidation to produce N‐oxide surfactants. These bio‐based surfactants exhibited promising properties, including high solubility, foamability, surface tension reduction, and critical micelle concentration. In particular, N‐GalA1.10 and N‐GalA1.12 showed comparable performance to commercial surfactants. Furthermore, these bio‐based surfactants demonstrated significantly lower skin irritation potential when compared to petrochemical‐derived counterparts like sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), making them potentially suitable for personal care products. The biodegradability assessment revealed that N‐GalA1.12 exhibited good biodegradation, indicating its potential environmental compatibility. In conclusion, this study highlights the potential of bio‐based N‐oxide surfactants derived from monosaccharides as sustainable and skin‐friendly alternatives to traditional amphoteric surfactants, like cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB)

Lipase Catalyzed Synthesis of D-xylose-based Biosurfactants and their Surface Properties

Abstract:Synthesis of a homologous series of 1-O-acyl xylose esters with long and very long acyl chains derived from fatty acids was performed via enzymatic esterification in one step using Candida antarctica lipase B. The effect of fatty acid chain length on the activity of the lipase was evaluated. Subsequently, the surface properties of the obtained products have been determined such as hydrophilic-lipophilic balance, critical micellar concentration, and surfactant packing parameter. Foaming and emulsifying ability were also measured. The highest conversion was obtained by using docosanoic acid as an acylant agent (67.50 %). The surface tension values are between 25 mN.m -1 for 1-O-octadecanoyl-D-xylopyranose and 47,17 mN.m -1 for 1-O-docosanoyl-D-xylopyranose. The emulsifying abilities of all esters exceeded 80%. It was found that the surface properties of the surfactants are greatly affected by the fatty acid chain length. The surface parameters results revealed that the prepared compounds have a good surface activity. Additionally, these bio-surfactants display good emulsifying ability.

Abstract:Directionally converting waste frying oil (WFO) to biodiesel is not only a crucial strategy for its clean and efficient utilization, but also a promising alternative for the large-scale substitution of petroleum-based fuels. However, the challenge of reducing mass transfer resistance between the alcohol/oil bi-liquid phases remains a major obstacle in the industrialization of WFO-based biodiesel (WFOBB). Additionally, both rapid emulsification and efficient demulsification still present bottlenecks that need to be addressed in emulsion reaction. Herein, the present study successfully demonstrates the fabrication of a novel Pickering interfacial catalyst with immobilized Brønsted-Lewis di-acid functionalized ionic liquids and photosensitizer (P (5 [DVB]-[SP]-[ILs-2FeCl 3 ])@SiO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 ) through layer-by-layer self-assembly. This novel Pickering interfacial catalyst efficiently constructed an intelligent magneto-optical dual stimuli-responsive Pickering emulsion. The intelligent Pickering emulsion enables precise control over amphiphilic interfacial catalyst using Vis-light regulation, thereby significantly enhancing mass transfer in the biphasic methanol-WFO system while providing an optimal hydrophobic micro-environment for highly efficient WFOBB production. The intelligent Pickering catalyst exhibits exceptional catalytic performance in achieving a 92.4% yield of WFOBB, which is currently the highest reported value under similar conditions. Furthermore, the efficient demulsification and separation of this Pickering interfacial catalyst could be achieved through the synergistic effect of UV-irradiation-induced hydrophilicity and its magnetic property. These findings present a new avenue for advancing the development of WFOBB technologies, while also offering promising prospects for industrial applications of Pickering emulsion systems.

Abstract:Setting superhydrophobic Mycobacterium sp. as an example, the hydrophobic bacteria acting as demulsifying agents of surfactant-stabilized conventional emulsions, vice versa, the synergistic/antagonistic influence of nonionic surfactants (Tween 80 or Span 80) on the stability of the bacteria-stabilized Pickering emulsions was investigated. At the same time, the activated/suppression effect of nonionic surfactants on microbial degradation of tetradecane, which exhibited a dose-response relationship, was also found. The hydrophobic bacteria acting as demulsifying agents and the suppression influence of nonionic surfactants on the biocatalytic performance (indexing as biomass) of natural alkane-degrading bacteria, believed to be totally separated concepts previously, are for the first time found to be closely related to in situ surface modification of bacteria with nonionic surfactants. During the degradation of tetradecane by Mycobacterium sp. in the presence of nonionic surfactants, demulsification due to the bacteria acting as demulsifying agents and interfacial biocatalysis in the bacteria-stabilized Pickering emulsions are involved, which provides useful information to select optimal dispersants for marine oil spills.
Efficient synthesis of glycerol carbonate over a commercially available 4A molecular sieve via an integrated vacuum reactive distillation process

Abstract:Various heterogeneous catalysts have been investigated in the transesterification of glycerol with ethylene carbonate to glycerol carbonate in a batch reactor, and a commercially available 4A molecular sieve exhibited relatively high catalytic performance for its surface strong basic and acidic sites. Further, an integrated vacuum reactive distillation process was developed for the transesterification in the presence of the 4A molecular sieve. The produced ethylene glycol could be efficiently removed from the reaction system to overcome the equilibrium, and excellent glycerol conversion (99%) and glycerol carbonate selectivity (>99%) were obtained under the optimal reaction conditions. The recycling and the scale-up experiments demonstrate the excellent practical potential of the present process, thus providing an efficient reaction process for the preparation of glycerol carbonate.
