Abstract:Superconducting (Bi, Pb)SrCaCuO wires have been successfully grown on pure Ag, Cu and Ni cores from the melt. The T(c onset)/T (c zero) values are: 95 K/82 K for Ag core, 93 K/79 K for Cu core and 85 K/30 K for Ni core. The T(c onset) is 60 K for Pt core but zero resistance is not possible down to 10 K. The oxide-Ag-core composite is flexible; its J(c) value, calculated from the M-H curve, is 20 000 A cm-2 (10 K, zero field), and hence it has potential for industrial applications. The phases are identified to be a mixture of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O7 and Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O9 for the oxide grown on Ag and Cu cores. The microstructure and interface were studied. Severe interaction between the Bi oxide and the Ni or Pt core, leading to microcracks and a new Pt8(Ca, Sr)5Cu7O20 phase in the latter case, was found to be the main reason for deteriorated superconducting properties.
