Abstract:Prussian blue and its analogues have attracted tremendous interests as cathode materials for sodium ion batteries because of their low cost and high capacity. However, their commercial applications are hindered by low capacity utilization and insufficient cycle life. Here, we report on a MnCoNi-co-doped Prussian blue analogue with high purity and crystallinity by a citrate-assisted controlled crystallization process. Moreover, a novel strategy of in situ capturing for residual coordinated water during sodiation/desodiation process is proposed to achieve a high cyclability by using the aluminium chloride Lewis acid as electrolyte additive. The reversible cubic-rhombohedral phase transition is revealed by in situ X-ray diffraction, ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and transient electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The MnCoNi-co-doped composite delivers a capacity of 111 mAh g(-1) even at 1C and retains a capacity retention of 78.7% after 1500 cycles for sodium ion batteries. This work provides important insights on eliminating the parasitical coordinated water in lattice and modulating the crystallinity to develop high-performance Prussian blue and its analogues.

Abstract:Today, post-lithium energy storage technologies are now rapidly progressing due to the high price of a net Li-ion battery, which also depends on the desired capacity and power. Among sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and even aluminum-based alternatives, young potassium-ion batteries demonstrate high capacity and energy density, notable ionic transport in electrolytes, the possibility to employ graphite anodes, and a wide variety of possible electrode materials: layered oxides, polyanionic, organic compounds, Prussian Blue analogs. However, the latter ones are generally considered as the most promising and practically viable. Prussian Blue analogs form a big family of electrode materials with the general formula K x M 1 [M 2 (CN) 6 ]∙nH 2 O, where x=0...2, and M i are any possible 3d transition metals. The most well-known and commercially available is based on a hexacyanoferrate anion [Fe(CN) 6 ] n- , while other transition metals can also form hexacyanometallate complexes, but are poorly studied or not known at all. The most part of published works shed light on the morphology and low content of water defects inside crystallites counting the lack of hexacyanoferrate, and their influence on realized capacity and capacity fades, while the fundamental principles and real water position presence which guide the electrochemical activity of high- and low-spin cations in these materials are totally missed. In our work, we also started with the intrinsic water defects and their impact on crystal and physicochemical properties in K 2 Mn[Fe(CN) 6 ]∙nH 2 O but with sensitive to light atoms neutron diffraction technique. We observed that water content does not effect the whole crystal symmetry but slightly amend unit cell parameters. Besides the fact of decreasing a decomposition temperature in "watered" Prussian Blue analog, electrochemical properties were found close. Therefore, we concluded that intrinsic water does not notably influence material properties. Continuing with potassium manganese hexacyanoferrate and electronic structure impact to the compound properties, to reveal the best synergetic stabilizing agent during cycling, we synthesized and studied the system K 2-γ Mn 1-x Co x [Fe(CN) 6 ]∙nH 2 O with x=0, 0.05,...1. In addition to symmetry and composition transformations, magnetic and electrochemical properties also significantly differ, while higher cobalt content increases the redox potential of iron, but drastically decreases total capacity due to the inability of reaching iron oxidation. The fact of notable changing of redox potentials in K 2-γ Mn 1-x Co x [Fe(CN) 6 ]∙nH 2 O is inspiring, and we have been extending with other hexacyanometallates. Hexacyanomanganate-ion [Mn(CN) 6 ] n- is one of the promising pathways to investigate such systems with a more fundamental point of view, and the obtained experimental results confirm the hypothesis. We discovered that cation position exchange totally alters the electrochemistry of the Prussian Blue cathode materials, and the interpretation still raises a lot of questions and assumptions, and together with computational chemistry, we will try to answer the fundamental questions about electronic, crystal structures and electrochemical properties. In this report we will present the new correlations of redox potential in Prussian Blue analogs depending on transition metal position and electronic structure, evaluate diffusion of potassium in these materials, and try to answer the possibility to use these compounds in potassium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Potassium manganese hexacianoferrate has been prepared by co-precipitation from manganese (II) chloride and potassium citrate, with chemical analysis yielding the formula K1.72 Mn[Fe(CN)6 ]0.92 □0.08 ⋅ 1.1H2 O (KMnHCF). Its X-ray diffraction pattern is consistent with a monoclinic structure (space group P 21 /n, no. 14) with cell parameters a=10.1202(6)Å, b=7.2890(5)Å, c=7.0193(4)Å, and β=89.90(1)°. Its redox behavior has been studied in magnesium containing electrolytes. Both K+ ions deintercalated from the structure upon oxidation and contamination with Na+ ions coming from the separator were found to interfere in the electrochemical response. In the absence of alkaline ions, pre-oxidized manganese hexacianoferrate showed reversible magnesium intercalation, and the process has been studied by operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The location of Mg2+ ions in the crystal structure was not possible with the available experimental data. Still, density functional theory simulations indicated that the most favorable position for Mg2+ intercalation is at 32f sites (considering a pseudo cubic F m-3m phase), which are located between 8c and Mn sites.

Abstract:Prussian blue and its analogues are widely used in the area of energy storage and conversion due to their low cost, simple synthesis, and notable electrochemical performance. Among various types of Prussian blue and its analogues, manganese-based Prussian blue analogues are preferred owing to their exceptional electrochemical performances. In this regard, they have attracted interest as cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. In this review, the major synthesis techniques for NaxMn[Fe(CN)6]y (MnHCF), including coprecipitation, electrodeposition, ball milling, and hydrothermal methods, are systematically summarized after a short description of the crystal structure and reaction mechanism of MnHCF. Moreover, the main issues of MnHCF and related optimization strategies are presented. Additionally, a specialized part of this review is provided for NaxMnII[MnII(CN)6] (MnHCM), which is an emerging and rarely reported material with high specific capacity (209 mAh g−1). Finally, challenges faced by manganese-based Prussian blue analogues and their potential development are discussed.

Abstract:In the last 5 years, potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have been considered as a promising post-lithium-ion battery technology, much due to cost effectiveness and a variety of electrode materials available [1]. Prussian Blue Analogues (PBAs), with advantages such as simple synthesis, high capacity, and eco-friendliness, have gained a huge interest [2–4] and here we present a detailed study on the electrochemical mechanism of K x Mn 2/3 Fe 1/3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] y .zH 2 O. We do this by combining complementary operando techniques: X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, supported by ex situ 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. Chemometric analysis of the operando data allows us to follow the physico-chemical and structural evolution during electrochemical cycling, providing deeper understanding. From this, a reversible phase transition between monoclinic and cubic crystal structure was observed during the oxidation/reduction of Mn species. The local geometry information on Fe and especially Mn, as obtained from the EXAFS data analysis, serves to explain the volume expansion of the Fe–CN–M (M = Mn, Fe) framework during the extraction of potassium. Abstract:Prussian blue analogues (PBAs, A2T[M(CN)6], A = Li, K, Na; T = Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Cu, etc.; M = Fe, Mn, Co, etc.) are a large family of materials with an open framework structure. In recent years, they have been intensively investigated as active materials in the field of energy conversion and storage, such as for alkaline‐ion batteries (lithium‐ion, LIBs; sodium‐ion, NIB; and potassium‐ion, KIBs), and as electrochemical catalysts. Abstract:The development of sodium/potassium-ion batteries with excellent performance would break the conflict between the limited lithium resources and low-price requirement of lithium-ion batteries. However, because of the bigger sizes of sodium/potassium ion in comparison to lithium ion, the requirement of anode materials with suitable structure for sodium/potassium ions insertion/extraction is still challenging. Here, porous MnSe/FeSe2 (Mn-Fe-Se) adhered/inserted with interlaced carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been successfully designed and prepared via a simple chemical precipitation approach and a subsequent one-step carbonization-selenization of Mn-Fe Prussian blue analogs precursor process. Characterization results demonstrate that the prepared Mn-Fe-Se/CNTs with high conductive network architecture are constructed by Mn-Fe-Se sphere adhered/inserted with interlaced CNTs, each Mn-Fe-Se sphere is assembled using several tens of nanoparticles and numerous voids, and the individual nanoparticle is uniformly coated by a thin nitrogen-doped amorphous carbon layer. Due to such unique porous architecture and synergistic effect of the heterogeneous components, Mn-Fe-Se/CNTs anode possesses reversible sodium/potassium storage with excellent rate performance and prominent cycling stability. Furthermore, the sodium and potassium storage mechanisms and kinetics verify the fundamental principles of improved electrochemical performance. This study will shed light on the development of other metal selenides with interlaced carbon nanotubes for high-performance sodium/potassium-ion batteries and other energy storage equipment.

Abstract:Prussian blue and Prussian blue analogues have attracted increasing attention as versatile framework materials with a wide range of applications in catalysis, energy conversion and storage, and biomedical and environmental fields. In terms of energy storage and conversion, Prussian blue-based materials have emerged as suitable candidates of growing interest for the fabrication of batteries and supercapacitors. Their outstanding electrochemical features such as fast charge–discharge rates, high capacity and prolonged cycling life make them favorable for energy storage application. Furthermore, Prussian blue and its analogues as rechargeable battery anodes can advance significantly by the precise control of their structure, morphology, and composition at the nanoscale. Their tunable structural and electronic properties enable the detection of many types of analytes with high sensitivity and specificity, and thus, they are ideal materials for the development of sensors for environmental detection, disease trend monitoring, and industrial safety. Additionally, Prussian blue-based catalysts display excellent photocatalytic performance for the degradation of pollutants and generation of hydrogen. Specifically, their excellent light capturing and charge separation capabilities make them stand out in photocatalytic processes, providing a sustainable option for environmental remediation and renewable energy production. Besides, Prussian blue coatings have been studied particularly for corrosion protection, forming stable and protective layers on metal surfaces, which extend the lifespan of infrastructural materials in harsh environments. Prussian blue and its analogues are highly valuable materials in healthcare fields such as imaging, drug delivery and theranostics because they are biocompatible and their further functionalization is possible. Overall, this review demonstrates that Prussian blue and related framework materials are versatile and capable of addressing many technical challenges in various fields ranging from power generation to healthcare and environmental management.

Abstract:A one‐pot synthesis of manganese‐doped Prussian blue analog open cages is achieved by combining the Kirkendall effect and Oswald ripening. Its formation and energy storage mechanisms are revealed. The correlation among material structure, morphology, and performance is further discussed. Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) exhibiting hollow morphologies have garnered considerable attention owing to their remarkable electrochemical properties. In this study, a one‐pot strategy is proposed for the synthesis of MnFe PBA open cages. The materials are subsequently employed as cathode electrode in sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). The simultaneous evolution of structure, morphology, and performance during the synthesis process is investigated. The findings reveal substantial structural modifications as the reaction time is prolonged. The manganese content in the samples diminishes considerably, while the potassium content experiences an increase. This compositional variation is accompanied by a significant change in the spin state of the transition metal ions. These structural transformations trigger the occurrence of the Kirkendall effect and Oswald ripening, culminating in a profound alteration of the morphology of MnFe PBA. Moreover, the shifts in spin states give rise to distinct changes in their charge–discharge profiles and redox potentials. Furthermore, an exploration of the formation conditions of the samples and their variations before and after cycling is conducted. This study offers valuable insights into the intricate relationship between the structure, morphology, and electrochemical performance of MnFe PBA, paving the way for further optimizations in this promising class of materials for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Abstract Iron-based Prussian blue analogs are promising low-cost and easily prepared cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. Their materials quality and electrochemical performance are heavily reliant on the precipitation process. Here we report a controllable precipitation method to synthesize high-performance Prussian blue for sodium-ion storage. Characterization of the nucleation and evolution processes of the highly crystalline Prussian blue microcubes reveals a rhombohedral structure that exhibits high initial Coulombic efficiency, excellent rate performance, and cycling properties. The phase transitions in the as-obtained material are investigated by synchrotron in situ powder X-ray diffraction, which shows highly reversible structural transformations between rhombohedral, cubic, and tetragonal structures upon sodium-ion (de)intercalations. Moreover, the Prussian blue material from a large-scale synthesis process shows stable cycling performance in a pouch full cell over 1000 times. We believe that this work could pave the way for the real application of Prussian blue materials in sodium-ion batteries.

This work used first-principles calculations to confirm that the NH4+ is adsorbed to the Ax site in the Prussian blue frame material (AxMa[Mb(CN)6]) by van der Waals interaction, and the charge transfer was mainly achieved by the interaction between the H atom in the NH4+ and the N atom in the Prussian blue frame. On this basis, the properties of NH4+ batteries were theoretically screened for the Fe-base Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) of different Ma elements (Ma = Co, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, V or Zn). Considering the regulating effect of different metal elements on electronic structure, the selection of MgFe and ZnFe PBAs as the electrode material of NH4+ battery is expected to show excellent electrochemical energy storage performance in organic electrolytes.

Prussian Blue Cathode Material: Preparation by Ion-Exchange Method and Electrochemical Potassium-Storage Performance

Abstract:Na-doped K-based Prussian blue (NKPB) material (K1.9Na0.1Mn[Fe(CN)(6)]center dot 0.4H(2)O) was prepared by ion exchange method using KCl and Na-based Prussian blue (NPB) material(Na2-xMn[Fe(CN)(6)](z)center dot yH(2)O) as the precursors. The electrochemical tests reveal that compared with the K-based Prussian blue (KPB) material K1.85Mn[Fe(CN)(6)](0.98) square Q0.02 center dot 0.7H(2)O (square is the [Fe(CN)(6)] vacancy) prepared by a conversional coprecipitation route, the NKPB prepared by ion-exchange method shows higher capacity (the initial discharge capacity at 0.1C reached 136.3 mAh longer cycle life (the capacity retention after 100 cycles at 0.5C was 96.1%), and better rate capability (the capacities at 5C and 10C were 87.6 and 68.4 mAh . g(-1) respectively). The outstanding electrochemical performance of the NKPB material is ascribed to its high K content, good crystal integrity, Na-ion doping, nanosized particles and the unique open framework structure.

Abstract:Prussian blue (PB) analogues, as an advanced type of inorganics, have garnered significant attention in various fields of electrochemical energy storage, such as sodium-, zinc-, and aluminum-ion batteries. Recent studies mostly concentrate on the structural analysis, morphological improvement of the materials, and electrochemical properties improvement of PB analogues when employed as electrodes for batteries. This paper summarizes the current process of PB analogues and their composites with other materials such as graphene or three-dimensional carbon sheets. The synthesis methods, structures, and morphologies of these composites are introduced and analyzed. Thereafter, we discuss their applications in sodium-, zinc-, and aluminum-ion batteries, as well as some corresponding flexible batteries. Finally, we provide their personal perspectives about some bottlenecks that existed in modern research and the challenges facing future advancements in this field.
