Abstract:The mechanisms of the regioselective annulation of N-hydroxyoximes and 1,3-diyne to synthesize alkynylated isoquinolines by using the catalyst [RuCl2(p-cymene)]2 have been theoretically investigated with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The role of the additive KPF6 employed in this experiment is clarified based on our mechanistic studies. PF6- could displace one free Cl- to activate the proximal arene C-H bond via the achievable outer-sphere base-assisted concerted metalation/deprotonation mechanisms. It can be deduced that the 1,3-diyne migratory insertion mode plays a key role in controlling the regioselectivity. The origin of the regioselectivity is probed by investigating electronic effects. The stronger electron-donating effect of the phenyl group compared with the alkynyl group facilitates the generation of 4-alkynylated isoquinoline. The impact of substituent groups on the regioselectivity could also be attributed to the electronic effects. The high electron density of the proximal arene carbon and Ru atoms in the oxime moiety would restrict the formation of 4-alkynylated isoquinoline.

Abstract:The bidentate ruthenium complex (HO-C5H3N-CO-C5H3N-C5H4N)Ru(CO)2Cl2 (2) could transform to a tridentate product (HO-C5H3N-CO-C5H3N-C5H4N)Ru(CO)Cl2 (3), which further reacted with CH3ONa in the presence of PPh3 to convert to two complexes [(OC5H3N-CO-C5H3N-C5H4N)Ru(PPh3)2(CO)]Cl– (4) and [(OC5H3N-CO-C5H3N-C5H4N)Ru(PPh3)(CO)Cl] (5), via −OH deprotonation. The catalytic coupling cyclizations of secondary alcohols with amino alcohols were investigated, and complex 3 exhibited the highest activity. The coupling reactions proceeded in air with only 0.2 mol % catalyst loading and had a broad scope for the synthesis of pyridines, quinolones, and pyrroles.

Abstract:[GRAPHICS] Attachment of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to ruthenium porphyrin via a covalent etheric bond gives soluble polymer-supported ruthenium catalysts 3-5. These catalysts exhibit high reactivity and selectivity toward alkene epoxidation with 2,6-dichloropyridine N-oxide and alkene cyclopropanation with diazo compounds. The application of these catalysts in the synthesis of unstable organic compounds has been demonstrated.

Abstract:An efficient ruthenium(II)-catalyzed oxidative annulation reaction of various arylimidazolium salts with alkynes via N-heterocyclic carbene-directed CH activation to obtain substituted benzo[ij]imidazo[2,1,5-de]quinolizinium salts is reported. This catalytic reaction proceeds in an excellent regioselective manner when using unsymmetrical alkynes as reactants. The intermediate mono-annulated products can be obtained by reducing the amount of catalyst. Two catalytically competent N-heterocyclic carbene-based cyclometallated ruthenium(II) complexes have been isolated and characterized, which represent the key intermediates in the catalytic cycle. Moreover, most of the products show a strong fluorescent property, indicating their potential for making new light-emitting materials.

Abstract:A novel and moderate synthesis of 2,5-disubstituted oxazoles and oxazolines involving ruthenium(II) porphyrin–copper chloride catalyzed cyclization was developed. These reactions using readily available benzene carboxylic acids and phenylethenes or phenylacetylenes are performed under mild conditions. The reactions proceed in series, giving rise to the formation of an intermolecular C–N bond and an intramolecular C–O bond, which yield oxazole or oxazoline derivatives simultaneously.

Abstract:A new type of N-heterocyclic carbene bearing ruthenium olefin metathesis catalyst was prepared through the incorporation of a chelated pyrimidinyl methylene subunit, in which electron-rich substituents were attached to stabilize the ruthenium complexes. These catalysts were successfully used in various types of olefin metathesis reactions, including ring-closing metathesis (RCM), cross-metathesis (CM), enyne metathesis (EM), and ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) reactions. The results therein showed that the presence of an electron-deficient pyrimidine structure greatly enhanced the new NHC ruthenium complexes' catalytic activities.

Abstract:[Ru2Cl(L)(CH3CN)(4)](PF6)(3) (1, L = 3,6-bis(N-(pyridylmethyl)imidazolylidenyl)pyridazine), [Cu3L3a](-)(PF6)(3) (2, L-a = 3-(N-(pyridylmethyl)imidazolylidenyl)-6-(N-(pyridylmethyl)imidazoyonyl)pyridazine), [Pd-2(allyl)(2)L](PF6)(2) (3), [Pd-2(allyl)(2)L-2(b)](PF6)(2) (4, L-b = N-pyridylmethyl-imidazole), and [NiL2c](PF6)(2) (5, L-c = 3-(N-(pyridylmethyl)imidazolylidenyl)-6-methoxylpyridazine) have been synthesized and fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. In complex 1, ligand L binds to two Ru(II) centers, forming a well-behaved Ru-2(L)Cl plane with a five-membered metallocyclic ring. Complex 2 is trinuclear, containing a triangular Cu-3 unit bonded together by three 3-(N-(pyridylmethyl)imidazolylidenyl)-6-(N-(pyridylmethyl)imidazolylonyl)pyridazine, where one imidazolylidene was oxidized into imidazolone. Deprotonation reaction with Ag2O in CH3CN and CH3OH resulted in C-N cleavage of the imidazolium salt, and subsequent reaction with [Pd(allyl)Cl](2) and Ni(PPh3)(2)Cl-2 gave 4 and 5, respectively. Dinuclear Ru(II)-NHC complex 1 exhibits excellent catalytic activity for the oxidation of alkenes into diketones.

Abstract:Ruthenium(II)‐catalyzed synthesis of π‐conjugated fused imidazo[1,5‐a]quinolin‐2‐ium derivatives have been achieved via C−H activation of quinoline‐functionalized NHC (NHC = N‐heterocyclic carbene) and oxidative coupling with internal alkynes. The reaction occurred with high efficiency, broad substrate scope, tolerates a wide range of functional groups and utilized into a gram‐scale. Synthetic applications of a coupled product have been exemplified in the late‐stage derivatization of various highly functionalized scaffolds. Moreover, most of the annulated products exhibit intense fluorescence and have potential applications in optoelectronic devices. Mechanistic studies have provided insights into the spectroscopic characterization of key five‐membered ruthenacycle intermediate and Ru(0) sandwich species. Based on several control experiments, deuterium‐kinetic isotope effect, and thermodynamic activation parameters the mechanistic finding demonstrated that fused imidazo‐[1,5‐a]quinolin‐2‐ium C(2)−H bond cleavage is the rate‐determining step and ruling out the possibility of reductive elimination for controlling the rate of reaction.
