Abstract:A novel full-range solid-solution Zn1-xCoxWO4 (0 <= x <= 1) was successfully developed via a facile one-pot hydrothermal route. The phase structure and microstructure were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Zn1-xCoxWO4 solid solution possesses similar wolframite crystal structure with the same space group P2/c. Diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS) measurements on Zn1-xCo WO4 (0 <= x <= 1) demonstrated that the optical band gap can be continuously tuned from 3.56 eV to 2.61 eV for direct transition and 1.87 eV for indirect transition, respectively, with increasing x from 0 to 1. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that CoWO4 has an antiferromagnetic transition at T-N = 42K, whereas Zn0.5Co0.5WO4 exhibits paramagnetic behavior. Moreover, CoWO4 and Zn0.5Co0.5WO4 obey the Curie-Weiss law from 200 k down to 50K, and their effective magnetic moments were determined. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Zn 1 − x Mn x O nanoparticles synthesized by a combustion method with Mn concentration x up to 0.40 are carefully characterized by means of x-ray powder diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Single-phase solid solution Zn1−xMnxO is achieved with a solubility limit of ∼30 at. % Mn. An almost linear dependence of lattice constant on the Mn content is observed, indicating the homogeneous substitution of Mn2+ for the Zn2+ in wurtzite ZnO. Magnetization at T=5 K and H=5 T exhibits a maximum around the Mn doping concentration of xm=0.125. Room temperature ferromagnetism with low coercive field (Hc∼70±5 Oe) is obtained for the sample with x=0.01. The observed magnetic properties of Zn1−xMnxO can be well understood within the framework of the donor impurity band exchange model.

Abstract:Cd1−xZnxO nanocrystalline thin films with rock-salt structure were obtained through thermal decomposition of Cd1−xZnxO2 (x=0, 0.37, 0.57, 1) thin films which were electrodeposited from aqueous solution at room temperature. X-ray diffraction results showed that the Zn ions were incorporated into rock salt-structure of CdO and the crystal lattice parameters decreased with the increase of Zn contents. The bandgaps of the Cd1−xZnxO thin films were obtained from optical transmission and were 2.40, 2.51, 2.63 and 3.25 eV, respectively.

Abstract:Zn1−xMnxO crystallites were synthesized by hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction, UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra confirm the substitution of Zn site by Mn2+ ion. The nonmonotonic variation of band gap exhibits that the short-ranged interactions between the d electrons of Mn and the s and p electrons of the host bands are dominated at lower Mn concentration (x). EPR spectra show that Mn2+ is in exchange interaction at higher x. By using a Curie–Weiss equation on the EPR data, it is found that the dominant magnetic property is antiferromagnetic for higher x, and paramagnetic for lower x.

Abstract:The structural, energetic, and electronic properties of zincblende and wurtzite phase Cd1-xZnxS (0 <= x <= 1) solid solutions were investigated by first-principles calculations. It was revealed that the trend of atom distribution in configurations with the same x value can be quantitatively characterized by the average length of the Zn-S bonds. The origin of this trend was attributed to the strong interaction of the Zn-S bonds, which acted against the aggregation of Zn atoms in this solid solution. By using a configuration-averaged method, structural and energetic properties were estimated as a function of Zn content at the level of the generalized gradient approximation, whereas electronic properties were corrected by using a hybrid functional. Phase diagrams of both solid solutions were established. An optimal x value of approximately 0.5 for photocatalytic hydrogen production was determined by taking both the band edges and band gaps into consideration; this conclusion was supported by the results of a variety of experiments.

Abstract:The electronic structures and magnetic properties of spinel Co1-x Zn (Cd)(x)Fe2O4 (x = 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0) have been studied systematically by the first-principles calculation. The optimized structures show that with increasing Zn (Cd) content the crystal lattice parameter increases by 1.47% (5.13%) when the Co ions are completely replaced by Zn (Cd) ions. The results also indicate that the magnetic moment of Co/Fe ion increases and the total spin magnetic moment linearly increases with the Zn (Cd) doping from 3.00 mu(B) for x = 0.0 up to 10.00 mu(B) for x = 1.0 per formula unit. The electronic distribution in the Co spin-down subband is highly localized for the crystal field splitting between t(2g) and e(g) levels in the Zn (Cd) doped CoFe2O4 compounds and the energy band moves downwards while doped with Zn (Cd). Meanwhile, the bandgap decreases with the increase of Zn (Cd) except where x = 1 and the spinel structure is half-metal at some degree of doping. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. Abstract:Metastable cubic Fe1-xZnxO solid solutions (0 < x ≤ 0.5) with a rock salt structure (Fm-3m) have been synthesized by a solid-phase reaction between wurtzite ZnO and cubic FeO at 7.7 GPa and 1500 K. The magnetic and transport properties of these solid solutions were studied at ambient pressure over the temperature range of 4.2-300 K, and the presence of antiferromagnetic order has been revealed with a decrease of the Néel temperature from 112 K for Fe0.7Zn0.3O down to 45 K for Fe0.5Zn0.5O. Synthesized rock salt Fe1-xZnxO solid solutions exhibit semiconducting behavior with low electrical resistivity (at 300 K, from 0.37 Ohm∙cm for x = 0 to 28 Ohm∙cm for x = 0.5) and p-type conductivity due to the presence of a deep defect level with an activation energy of 105-144 meV located above the top of the valence band.

Abstract:The magnetic transition-metal (TM) @ oxide nanoparticles have been of great interest due to their wide range of applications, from medical sensors in magnetic resonance imaging to photo-catalysis. Although several studies on small clusters of TM@oxide have been reported, the understanding of the physical electronic properties of TMn@(ZnO)42 is far from sufficient. In this work, the electronic, magnetic and optical properties of TMn@(ZnO)42 (TM = Fe, Co and Ni) hetero-nanostructure are investigated using the density functional theory (DFT). It has been found that the core-shell nanostructure Fe13@(ZnO)42, Co15@(ZnO)42 and Ni15@(ZnO)42 are the most stable structures. Moreover, it is also predicted that the variation of the magnetic moment and magnetism of Fe, Co and Ni in TMn@ZnO42 hetero-nanostructure mainly stems from effective hybridization between core TM-3d orbitals and shell O-2p orbitals, and a magnetic moment inversion for Fe15@(ZnO)42 is investigated. Finally, optical properties studied by calculations show a red shift phenomenon in the absorption spectrum compared with the case of (ZnO)48.
Chemical-state analyses of Ni, Zn, and W ions in NiWO$_4$-ZnWO$_4$ solid solutions by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Abstract:The chemical states of Ni, Zn, and W in microcrystalline NiWO$_4$-ZnWO$_4$ solid solutions were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The recorded spectra of the Ni 2p, Zn 2p, and W 4f photoelectron lines and Ni L$_2$M$_{23}$M$_{45}$, Zn L$_3$M$_{45}$M$_{45}$, and W N$_4$N$_{67}$N$_{7}$ Auger-transition lines show pronounced changes with increasing Zn concentration. The positions of the resolved photoelectron and Auger-transition lines were combined to construct so-called chemical-state plots (Wagner or Auger-parameter plots) for metal ions in solid solutions. With increasing Zn concentration, the Auger parameter increases for Ni and decreases for W, thus evidencing a lowering and an increase of the electronic polarizability around core-ionized Ni and W ions, respectively. At the same time, the character of Zn-O bonds and the local structure around Zn ions do not change. It is concluded that the dilution of NiWO$_4$ with Zn ions is accompanied by an increase of the Ni-O bond ionicity and an increase of the W-O bond covalency. These changes are attributed to the charge redistribution among [NiO$_6$] and [WO$_6$] structural units. We show that a careful in-depth analysis of XPS data obtained with a laboratory-based X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy system can give chemically sensitive, qualitative information on the changes in the first coordination spheres of each metal ion. This information is otherwise accessible only by synchrotron-based techniques (such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy).

Abstract:Cobalt-doped ZnO dilute magnetic semiconductor nanocomposites Zn1−xCoxO with Co concentrations from 0.02 to 0.25 were prepared by the sol-gel method. The magnetic measurement shows paramagnetic behavior for all the samples. The structures of these composites were investigated by x-ray diffraction and fluorescence x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. It is indicated that at low Co concentration (x⩽0.05), the Co atoms are incorporated into the ZnO lattice and located at the substitutional sites of the Zn atoms. At higher Co doping concentration (x⩾0.10), the secondary phase Co3O4 is precipitated. Correlating the magnetic behavior with the structural properties of the Zn1−xCoxO nanocomposites, the authors interpret the paramagnetism to be intrinsic in nature as a result of the low effective doping of Co in ZnO and the lack of oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:The electronic structures, magnetic properties, half-metallicity and optical properties of Zn1-xMoxS (x=0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00) are studied by spin-polarized first-principles calculation. Excepting the Zn0.5Mo0.5S system with a tetragonal structure, the other systems Zn1-xMoxS (x=0.00, 0.25, 0.75, 1.00) are all in the cubic structure. The lattice constants (volumes) of the Mo doped systems are larger than those of the pure ZnS due to the atomic radius of 2.01Å for Mo atom larger than that of 1.53Å for Zn atom. Although pure ZnS is a nonmagnetic semiconductor with a wide band gap of 3.12eV, due to incompletely filled Mo-4d orbital both the moderate Mo doped systems Zn0.5Mo0.5S and Zn0.25Mo0.75S are magnetic metal, especially the less Mo doped system Zn0.75Mo0.25S and the completely Mo doped system MoS are magnetic half-metal. For Zn0.75Mo0.25S system with a magnetic half-metal character as one example, the conducted spin-up channel is only contributed by the threefold degenerate t2g(dxy,dyz,dzx) states due to the tetrahedral crystal field of the S atoms pushing the spin-up channel of the double degenerate eg(dz2,dx2-y2) states down below the Fermi level EF. Mo doping not only influences the shape of the original broad absorption peak ranging from 2.5 to 20eV of pure ZnS, but also leads to two new narrow absorption peaks appeared in the ranges from 0 to 3eV and from 33 to 43eV. Moreover, their maximum absorption rate and the corresponding energy increase with increasing Mo content. These results are very useful for Zn1-xMoxS to be applied in optical detectors and spintronics devices.

Abstract:Homogenous ZnxGa2O3+x (0 <= x <= 1) solid solution nanocrystals were successfully prepared by a solvothermal approach and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray spectra in fluorescence (XRF), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS). XRD pattern analysis revealed that the lattice parameters of ZnxGa2O3+x (0 <= x <= 1) solid solution nanocrystals increased linearly with the increase of ZnxGa2O4 ratio according to Vegard's law, which confirmed the homogenous structures of these solid solution nanocrystals. UV-vis absorption spectra demonstrated that the band gap of the obtained ZnxGa2O3+x solid solution nanocrystals could be precisely tuned in the range of 4.43 to 3.70 eV by elaborately controlling the content of zinc. The emission of ZnxGa2O3+x solid solution nanocrystals strengthened and red-shifted gradually with the increase of x value, and ZnGa2O4 nanocrystals showed an intense blue emission. XPS results revealed that ZnxGa2O3+x binding energy of O2- Is increased with the increase of the x value, indicating the decrease of the oxygen vacancies (V-o*) of O-h sites and the increase of the symmetry of the Ga-O octahedron, which resulted in the emission red-shift of ZnxGa2O3+x solid solution.
Configuration Dependence of the Properties of Cd1–xZnxS Solid Solutions by First‐principles Calculations

Abstract:Cd1−xZnxS solid solutions have drawn much attention for the extensive potential applications. In this paper, we systematically computed the lattice constant, mixing enthalpy and bandgap for each configuration of zinc‐blende (ZB) and wurtzite (WZ) type Cd1−xZnxS (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) solid solutions using the first‐principles method, and quantitatively revealed that the Zn–S bond was the most critical factor in determining the relative stability among different configurations with the same composition, as well as the order of the bandgap. Using the configuration‐averaged method, the average values of these properties, as well as the optical bowing coefficient, were obtained. We estimated the influence of the configuration average on these quantities, indicating that the configuration average significantly affected the mixing enthalpy, which explicitly determined the phase stability of the solid solutions.

Abstract:The electronic structure, chemical bond characteristics and microwave dielectric properties of Zn1-xCoxWO4 (x = 0-0.1) ceramics prepared by solid-state reaction were investigated by First-principle calculations, Raman spectroscopy, XRD refinement and P-V-L theory. According to the P-V-L theory and electronic structure calculations, the bond energy and covalency of W-O were stronger than that of Zn-O, which played a crucial role in the properties. The Raman spectra illustrated that appropriate Co2+ substitution was beneficial to the ordered structure. Additionally, the relative permittivity of the sample was mainly affected by the porosity and ionic polarizability, and the quality factor is determined by the microstructure, bond energy and packing fraction, and the tau(f) value is correlated with bond valence of W-O. This study showed how the Co2+ substitution not only reduces the dielectric loss and the signal delay time, but also improves the temperature stability. The composition (x = 0.02) exhibited remarkable properties: epsilon(r) = 14.22, Qxf = 59,805 GHz, tau(f) = -60.3 ppm/degrees C, providing a promising candidate for 5 G electronic equipment. Abstract:Crystal Zn1−xMnxO magnetic semiconductors have been obtained by using a hydrothermal method for the first time at temperature of 703K with substituent fraction ranging from x=0 to 0.04. X-ray diffraction and optical absorption measurements provide evidence for the locating at Zn site of Mn ion in ZnO crystals. The non-monotonic variation of band gap indicates the short-ranged interactions of sp–d electrons. However, no evidence of ferromagnetism is found in these systems down to T=2K. The magnetization is found to be contributed from both free spins and spins associated with antiferromagnetic clusters. The antiferromagnetism is confirmed by fitting a Curie–Weiss function.

Abstract:Zn 0.96 Mn 0.04 O and Zn0.96Mn0.04O:N thin films with wurtzite structure were grown by inductively coupled plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition method. Although both samples exhibit ferromagnetism at room temperature, the saturation magnetic moment (1.4μB∕Mn) of the Mn- and N-codoped sample is much larger than that (0.3μB∕Mn) of the N-free one. The x-ray absorption near edge structure analysis reveals that the codoped Mn and N impurities can be substitutionally incorporated into the ZnO host in the Zn0.96Mn0.04O:N thin film. The first-principles calculations suggest that the N substitution for the O site in Mn-doped ZnO can change the interaction of neighboring Mn–Mn pairs from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic, and accordingly the effective magnetic moment per Mn is greatly enhanced.

Abstract:We report a comprehensive study of the crystal structure of (Ga1-xZnx)(Ni1-xOx) solid solution nanopartides by means of neutron and synchrotron X-ray scattering. In our study, we used four different types of (Ga1-xZnx)(Ni1-xOx) nanopartides, with diameters of 10-27 nm and x = 0.075-0.51, which show energy band gaps from 2.21 to 2.61 eV. Rietveld analysis of the neutron diffraction data revealed that the average crystal structure is hexagonal wurtzite (space group P6(3)mc) for the larger nanopartides, while the crystal structure of smaller nanoparticles is disordered hexagonal. Pair-distribution-function analysis found that the intermediate crystal structure retains a "motif" of the average one; however, the local structure is more disordered. The implications of disorder on the reduced energy band gap are discussed.

Abstract:Polycrystalline Zn1−xCoxO (x=0, 0.02, 0.06) thin films have been synthesized by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). The structural, optical, and magnetic properties of the films were investigated. It is shown from X-ray analyses that all the films have wurtzite structure. In photoluminescence (PL) spectra, near band edge (NBE) emissions were observed in all of the films with a blue shift with the increase of Co content. The results from both the X-ray and PL spectra analysis reveal that Co ions substitute for the Zn2+ ions of the ZnO matrix. The field dependence and temperature dependence of magnetization demonstrate that the Zn1−xCoxO film materials are ferromagnetic with Curie temperature over 300K.

Abstract:Zn1-xCoxO (x=0.01, 0.02) dilute magnetic semiconductor thin films deposited on Si (001) substrates at 650℃ by pulsed laser deposition method were studied by X-ray absorption fine structure, X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurement. The typical ferromagnetic hysteresis curves were obtained by superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry at room temperature. The X-ray diffraction results showed that Zn1-xCoxO films were of the wurtzite structure. The X-ray absorption fine structure results revealed that the Co atoms were incorporated into the ZnO lattice and located at the substitutional Zn sites, and a homogeneous phase of Zn1-xCoxO was formed. Comparing the experimental curves with the theoretical calculation results, the additional peak C was assigned to the oxygen vacancies, which indicated that the ferromagnetism of Zn1-xCoxO films was strongly correlated with the existence of oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:Bulk Cr1-x Mn x O2 samples are prepared by high pressure synthesis technology. The crystal structure, magnetic properties and electronic structure of the samples are investigated by experiments and theoretical calculation. The crystal structure of the samples are indexed to a rutile structure with space group P42/mnm. The lattice parameter a of the samples remains basically unchanged in accordance with Vegard's law, but the lattice parameter c decreases due to increasing Mn dopant content (x) as well as strong Metal–Metal bonding along the c-axis. The saturation magnetization of the Cr1-x Mn x O2 samples decreases with an increase in x. According to XPS analysis, there is electron transfer between Mn and Cr in Cr1-x Mn x O2. Mn exists as Mn2+ and Mn3+ions, and part of Cr is oxidized to Cr6+. Based on the XPS analysis, the magnetic moment of Cr1-x Mn x O2 is calculated and its value is in accordance with the experimental data.
