Abstract:An improved method for the deprotection of benzyl ethers using a catalytic amount of Co(2)(CO)(8) in the presence of Me(2)PhSiH and CO (1 atm) is described. The deprotection reaction is compatible with double bond or sulfur-containing substrates. The method also tolerates other functional groups, such as Ac, Piv, and Bz, and shows potential selectivity in perbenzylated monosaccharides.

Abstract:Covalent organic framework (COF) particles with hydroxy groups and well-defined micropores have been synthesized and used as novel carriers to load a metallocene catalyst—Cp2ZrCl2. The resulting supported catalyst, which had a high specific surface area, demonstrated higher catalytic activity, better thermal tolerance, and a unique nanoconfinment effect during ethylene polymerization, producing polyethylene with a higher molecular weight, increased crystallinity, and highly improved mechanical performance. Abstract:Combined computational and experimental studies elucidated the distinctive mechanistic features of electrochemical cobalt-catalyzed C-H oxygenation. A sequential electrochemical-chemical (EC) process was identified for the formation of an amidylcobalt(iii) intermediate. The synthesis, characterization, cyclic voltammetry studies, and stoichiometric reactions of the related amidylcobalt(iii) intermediate suggested that a second on-cycle electro-oxidation occurs on the amidylcobalt(iii) species, which leads to a formal Co(iv) intermediate. This amidylcobalt(iv) intermediate is essentially a cobalt(iii) complex with one additional single electron distributed on the coordinating heteroatoms. The radical nature of the coordinating pivalate allows the formal Co(iv) intermediate to undergo a novel carboxylate-assisted HAT mechanism to cleave the arene C-H bond, and a CMD mechanism could be excluded for a Co(iii/i) catalytic scenario. The mechanistic understanding of electrochemical cobalt-catalyzed C-H bond activation highlights the multi-tasking electro-oxidation and the underexplored reaction channels in electrochemical transition metal catalysis.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of ethylbenzene to acetophenne is an important process in both organic synthesis and fine chemicals diligence. The cobalt-based catalysts combined with nitrogen-doped carbon have received great attention in ethylbenzene (EB) oxidation. Here, a series of cobalt catalysts with metallic cobalt nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated in nitrogen-doped graphite-like carbon shells (Co@NC) have been constructed through the one-pot pyrolysis method in the presence of different nitrogen-containing compounds (urea, dicyandiamide and melamine), and their catalytic performance in solvent-free oxidation of EB with tert-butyl hydrogen peroxide (TBHP) as an oxidant was investigated. Under optimized conditions, the UCo@NC (urea as nitrogen source) could afford 95.2% conversion of EB and 96.0% selectivity to acetophenone, and the substrate scalability was remarkable. Kinetics show that UCo@NC contributes to EB oxidation with an apparent activation energy of 32.3 kJ/mol. The synergistic effect between metallic cobalt NPs and nitrogen-doped graphite-like carbon layers was obviously observed and, especially, the graphitic N species plays a key role during the oxidation reaction. The structure–performance relationship illustrated that EB oxidation was a free radical reaction through 1-phenylethanol as an intermediate, and the possible reaction mechanistic has been proposed.

Abstract:This work presents an innovative approach focusing on fine-tuning the coordination environment of atomically dispersed cobalt catalysts for tandem synthesis of primary benzylamines from oxidized lignin model compounds. By meticulously regulating the Co–N coordination environment, the activity of these catalysts in the hydrogenolysis and reductive amination reactions was effectively controlled. Notably, our study demonstrates that, in contrast to cobalt nanoparticle catalysts, atomically dispersed cobalt catalysts exhibit precise control of the sequence of hydrogenolysis and reductive amination reactions. Particularly, the CoN3 catalyst with a triple Co–N coordination number achieved a remarkable 94% yield in the synthesis of primary benzylamine. To our knowledge, there is no previous documentation of the synthesis of primary benzylamines from lignin dimer model compounds. Our study highlights a promising one-pot route for sustainable production of nitrogen-containing aromatic chemicals from lignin.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenolysis of aryl ethers is a green way to utilize lignin-derived biomass resources or aromatic plastics with ether bonds for producing important chemicals and biofuels, but is also a challenging issue. In this work, we synthesized several cobalt-yttrium bimetallic catalysts via a simple co-precipitation method. One of them with a Co/Y molar ratio of 12/1 could catalyze the reaction with good performances in the absence of a promoter under relatively mild conditions, especially as low as 140 °C. The interaction between Co and Y species contributed to the high activity. The Y species inhibited the reduction of cobalt oxides and enhanced the adsorption capacity of hydrogen. The results of recycling and gram-scale experiments showed the present catalyst possesses great potential for industrial application. The present finding not only builds an efficient Co–Y bimetallic catalyst for hydrogenolysis of aryl ethers emanated from lignin-derived biomass or aromatic plastics with ether bonds, but also widens the application range of the rarely used yttrium metal in catalysis.

Abstract:An unprecedented efficient protocol is developed for the oxidative cleavage of C≡C bonds in alkynes to produce structure-diverse esters using heterogeneous cobalt nanoparticles as catalyst with molecular oxygen as the oxidant. A diverse set of mono- and multisubstituted aromatic and aliphatic alkynes can be effectively cleaved and converted into the corresponding esters. Characterization analysis and control experiments indicate high surface area and pore volume, as well as nanostructured nitrogen-doped graphene-layer coated cobalt nanoparticles are possibly responsible for excellent catalytic activity. Mechanistic studies reveal that ketones derived from alkynes under oxidative conditions are formed as intermediates, which subsequently are converted to esters through a tandem sequential process. The catalyst can be recycled up to five times without significant loss of activity.

Abstract:A novel cobalt-catalyzed C-H alkylation of arenes and olefins is achieved with (pyridin-2-yl)isopropyl amine as an N, N-bidentate directing group. Different linear, branched, and cyclic alkyl ethers were used as practical secondary alkylating reagents through cleavage of C(sp3)-O bond, providing an efficient approach to the synthesis of verstile o-alkylated arylamides and tetrasubstituted acrylamides. Mechanistic studies indicate that cleavage of the inert C(sp3)-O bond involves a cobalt-promoted radical process and that cleavage of the inert C(sp2)-H bond by a cobalt catalyst is a rate-limiting step.

Abstract:A remarkably effective method for the chemoselective cleavage of the C-O bonds of typical beta-O-4 model compounds and the deconstruction of lignin feedstock was developed by using tungsten carbide as the catalyst. High yields of C-O cleavage products (up to 96.8%) from model compounds and liquid oils (up to 70.7%) from lignin feedstock were obtained under low hydrogen pressure (0.69 MPa) in methanol. The conversion efficiency was determined to a large extent by solvent effects and was also affected by both the electronic and steric effects of the lignin model compounds. In situ W2C/activated carbon (AC)-catalyzed hydrogen transfer from methanol to the substrate was proposed to be responsible for the high performance in methanol solvent. The conversion of 2-(2-methoxyphenoxy)-1-phenylethanol showed that the catalyst could be reused five times without a significant loss in activity for C-chemoselective-O bond cleavage, whereas the selectivity to value-added styrene increased markedly owing to partial oxidation of the W2C phase according to X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy characterization. 2D-HSQCNMR spectroscopy analysis showed that W2C/AC exhibited high activity not only for beta-O-4 cleavage but also for the deconstruction of more resistant alpha-O-4 and beta-beta linkages, so that a high yield of liquid oil was obtained from lignin. Corn stalk lignin was more liable to be depolymerized than birch lignin owing to its loosened structure (scanning electron microscopy results), larger surface area (BET results), and lower molecular weight (gel-permeation chromatography results), whereas its liquid oil composition was more complicated than that of birch wood lignin in that the former lignin contained more p-hydroxyphenyl units and the former contained noncanonical units.

Abstract:Designing and synthesizing highly efficient non-noble metal-based catalysts with uniform active sites provide a powerful platform for recognizing real active sites and understanding catalytic reaction mechanisms. Herein, we prepared a series of N-doped graphene-like carbon (NG) intercalated Co-based single/dual-atom catalysts via hard template-assisted spatial confinement strategy. Comprehensive characterizations confirmed the atomically dispersed cobalt single atom active sites. The obtained Co SACs@NG-800-50 catalyst exhibits satisfying activity and selectivity for oxidative esterification of benzyl alcohol and other investigated alcohols under mild conditions. The catalyst can effectively activate O 2 to generate ∙O 2- active species through abundant CoN 3 active sites, thus promoting the smooth progress of oxidative esterification of aromatic alcohols. Moreover, the catalyst displays excellent structural stability and recycling durability even after 6 times of reaction.

Abstract:A silica supported cobalt (II) Salen complex catalyst has been successfully employed in the aerobic oxidation of alkyl aromatics at atmospheric pressure in the presence of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). The reaction is particularly selective for the oxidation of the benzylic CH2 group and the major product obtained was ketone. The immobilized catalyst can be easily recovered and reused for at least four reaction cycles without any significant loss of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:The synthesis of manganese-cobalt oxide with outstanding activity and selectivity toward benzyl alcohol oxidation using air as oxidant is reported in this work. The as-synthesized catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N 2 physisorption, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Temperature Programmed Reduction/Desorption/Oxidation techniques. The catalysts with different Mn/Co ratio show obviously different morphologies and structures. The Mn 1 Co 2 with spinel MnCo 2 O 4 structure exhibits the lowest activation energy, as well as the best performances toward benzyl alcohol oxidation. It is considered that excellent performances is related to the good reducibility and reactivity of oxygen species, oxygen activation ability, in virtue of the close Mn-Co interaction with in the MnCo 2 O 4 structure.
