Abstract:A series of cobalt(II) complexes containing 2-imino-1,10-phenanthrolines have been synthesized and characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analysis. The molecular structures of complexes 2, 3, 8 and 14 were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. On treatment with methylaluminoxane (MAO) or modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO), these cobalt(II) complexes show moderate to high catalytic activities for ethylene oligomerization and butene predominates among the oligomers produced. Abstract:Cobalt(ii) complexes of the type [CoCl(2)(P,N)], where P,N represents a heterobidentate phosphino- or phosphinito-oxazoline-type ligand, have been synthesised and characterised by infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Their molecular structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in the solid state. Whereas the phosphino-oxazoline complex [CoCl(2){Ph(2)PCH(2)ox(Me2)}] (Ph(2)PCH(2)ox(Me2) = 2-[(diphenylphosphanyl)-methyl]-4,4-dimethyl-4,5-dihydro-oxazole) () and the phosphinito-oxazoline complexes [CoCl(2){Ph(2)POCH(2)ox(Me2)}] (Ph(2)POCH(2)ox(Me2) = 1-[4,4-dimethyl-2{1-oxy(diphenylphosphino)-1-methyl}]-4,5-dihydro-oxazole) () and [CoCl(2){Ph(2)POCMe(2)ox(Me2)}] (Ph(2)POCMe(2)ox(Me2) = 1-[4,4-dimethyl-2- [1-oxy(diphenylphosphino)-1-methylethyl]]-4,5-dihydrooxazole) () are mononuclear, the phosphino-oxazoline complexes [CoCl(2){micro-i-Pr(2)PCH(2)ox}](2) (i-Pr(2)PCH(2)ox = 2-[(diisopropyl-phosphanyl)-methyl]-4,5-dihydro-oxazole) () and [CoCl(2){micro-Ph(2)PCH(2)ox}](2) (Ph(2)PCH(2)ox = 2-[(diphenyl-phosphanyl)-methyl]-4,5-dihydro-oxazole) () are dinuclear compounds and contain two bridging phosphino-oxazoline ligands which form a 10-membered ring. In the course of this work, the zwitterionic complex [CoCl(3){Ph(2)PCH(2)C(O)OCH(2)CMe(2)NH(3)] () was obtained and characterised by X-ray diffraction in which the oxazoline ring has been opened. Air-oxidation of the phosphine function of the mononuclear P,N chelate complex yielded the blue N,O-bridged, centrosymmetric dinuclear complex [[upper bond 1 start]CoCl(2){micro-OPPh(2)CH(2)[lower bond 1 start]C[double bond, length as m-dash]N[upper bond 1 end]CMe(2)CH(2)O[lower bond 1 end]}](2) () which contains a 12-membered ring. All these complexes are paramagnetic and their magnetic moments in solution were measured by the Evans method. Complexes were evaluated in the catalytic oligomerisation of ethylene with AlEtCl(2) or methylaluminoxane (MAO) as cocatalysts and provided moderate activities. In the presence of AlEtCl(2) (6-14 equiv.), the selectivities for ethylene dimers were higher than 92% and complex showed the highest turnover frequency with 14 equiv. of AlEtCl(2). When MAO was used as cocatalyst, the catalytic activities were similar to those with AlEtCl(2) but significant amounts of C(6)-C(12) oligomers were produced.

Abstract:A series of new cobalt and nickel complexes LMX2 (M=Co, X=Cl; M=Ni, X=Br) bearing 2, 6-bis(imino)phenoxy ligands were synthesized. The solid-state structures of 1 and 4 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. Treatment of the complexes LMX2 with methylaluminoxane (MAO) leads to active catalysts for oligomerization of ethylene with catalytic activities in the range of 1.2×105–2.1×105 g mol−1 h−1 atm−1 for Ni complexes, and ∼103 g mol−1 h−1 atm−1 for Co complexes. The oligomers were olefins from C4 to C16.

Abstract:Transition-metal catalysts that can efficiently activate peroxide bonds have been extensively pursued for various applications including environmental remediation, chemical synthesis, and sensing. Here, we present pyridine-coordinated Co single atoms embedded in a polyaromatic macrostructure as a highly efficient peroxide-activation catalyst. The efficient catalytic production of reactive radicals through peroxymonosulfate activation was demonstrated by the rapid removal of model aqueous pollutants of environmental and public health concerns such as bisphenol A, without pH limitation and Co2+ leaching. The turnover frequency of the newly synthesized Co single-atom catalyst bound to tetrapyridomacrocyclic ligands was found to be 2 to 4 orders of magnitude greater than that of benchmark homogeneous (Co2+) and nanoparticulate (Co3O4) catalysts. Experimental results and density functional theory simulation suggest that the abundant π-conjugation in the polyaromatic support and strong metal-support electronic interaction allow the catalysts to effectively adsorb and activate the peroxide precursor. We further loaded the catalysts onto a widely used poly(vinylidene fluoride) microfiltration membrane and demonstrated that the model pollutants were oxidatively removed as they simply passed through the filter, suggesting the promise of utilizing this novel catalyst for realistic applications.

Abstract:The N,N'-(phenyl-2-pyridinylmethylene)-3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine and its dimeric Co(Ⅱ)and Ni(Ⅱ) complexes were synthesized.The organic compound was characterized by elemental analyses,IR and NMR spectra,while the bimetal complexes were determined by elemental analyses,IR spectra as well as the single-crystal X-ray diffraction.The nickel complex showed high activity for ethylene polymerization and its cobalt analogue showed negligible active in ethylene activation.

Abstract:The novel chloro(1-naphthyl) [8-(diphenylphosphino) quinoline] nickel(II) (1), chloro(1-naphthyl) [2-methyl-8( diphenylphosphino) quinoline] nickel(II) (2), and [2-methyl-8- (diphenylphosphino) quinoline] nickel(II) dichloride ( 3) complexes were synthesized in satisfactory yield and fully characterized. The structures of complexes 1 and 3 were determined by single crystal X-ray analysis, which indicated that complex 1 exists in a square planar configuration, while complex 3 is dimeric square pyramidal. In the presence of MAO cocatalyst, complexes 1 3 displayed good catalytic activities for ethylene oligomerization in toluene, up to 2.45 x 10(5) g ethylene ( mol Ni.h.atm)(-1) by complex 3.

Abstract:The dicobalt complex [Co-2(L-2)] of a Schiff-base pyrrole macrocycle adopts a Pacman structure in solution and the solid state and shows much greater catalytic activity and selectivity for the four-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) than the mononuclear cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) counterpart. Soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) shows that the Co center in Co-2(L-2) is of the same valence as mononuclear CoPc. However, the former complex shows higher unoccupied Co 3d density which is believed to be beneficial for electron transfers. Furthermore, the XAS data suggests that the crystal fields for Co-2(L-2) and CoPc are different, and that an interaction remains between two Co atoms in Co-2(L-2). DFT calculations imply that the sterically hindered, cofacial structure of the dicobalt complex is critical for the operation of the four-electron reaction pathway during the ORR.

Abstract:Two novel cobalt( ii ) complexes [Co(HL 1 ) 2 ](NO 3 ) 2 .2.5H 2 O ( 1 ) and [Co(HL 2 ) 2 ](NO 3 ) 2 ( 2 ) (where HL 1 = (E)-2-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)hydrazine-1-carboxamide and HL 2 = (E)-2-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)hydrazine-1-carboxamide) have been synthesized and structurally characterized by spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal diffraction analysis. The complexes are close comparable with metals exhibiting the expected distorted octahedral geometry being chelated by two semicarbazone ligands via NNO donor set. The catecholase-like activity of complexes 1 and 2 was evaluated by using 3,5-di-tert-butylcatecholas substrate. The results showed that both the complexes are effective catalysts with K cat values of 762 and 562, respectively. Theoretical DFT study and Hirschfeld surface analyses were also carried out to reveal the nature of intermolecular contacts and to integrate experimental observations.

Abstract:Reactions of the dimeric cobalt complex [(L(-) Co)2 ] (1, L=[(2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 )NC(Me)]2 ) with polyarenes afforded a series of mononuclear and dinuclear complexes: [LCo(η(4) -anthracene)] (2), [LCo(μ-η(4) :η(4) -naphthalene)CoL] (3), and [LCo(μ-η(4) :η(4) -phenanthrene)CoL] (4). The pyrene complexes [{Na2 (Et2 O)2 }{LCo(μ-η(3) :η(3) -pyrene)CoL}] (5) and [{Na2 (Et2 O)3 }{LCo(η(3) -pyrene)}] (6) were obtained by treating precursor 1 with pyrene followed by reduction with Na metal. These complexes contain three potential redox active centers: the cobalt metal and both α-diimine and polyarene ligands. Through a combination of X-ray crystallography, EPR spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurement, and DFT computations, the electronic configurations of these complexes were studied. It was determined that complexes 2-4 have a high-spin Co(I) center coupled with a radical α-diimine ligand and a neutral polyarene ligand. Whereas, the ligand L in complexes 5 and 6 has been further reduced to the dianion, the cobalt remains in a formal (I) oxidation state, and the pyrene molecule is either neutral or monoanionic.

Abstract:In this work, we report the preparation and crystal structures of three new oligonuclear complexes, Ru-2(bbpmp)(mu-OAc)(3) (4), [Co-2(bbpmp)(mu-OAc)(mu-OMe)](PF6) (5), [Cu-4(Hbbpmp)(2)(mu-OAc)(H2O)(2)](OAc)(PF6)(2) (6) {H(3)bbpmp = 2,6-bis[(2-hydroxybenzyl)-(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-4-methylphenol (3)}. The structures of the complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The oxidation states of ruthenium, cobalt and copper in the complexes are +3, +3 and +2, respectively. In 4 and 5, Ru-III and Co-III are coordinated to four oxygen and two nitrogen atoms in an octahedral geometry, while in 6, Cu-II adopts both octahedral (CuN2O4) and square-pyramidal (CuN2O3) geometry. The potential of the three complexes as oxidation catalysts has been investigated.

Abstract:Cobalt(III) complexes, [CoCl2(L1)(2)](PF6) (1, L1 = N-methyl-N-(2-pyrimidinyl)imidazolylidene), [CoCl(L2)(2)](PF6)(2) (2, L2 = N-picolyl-(2-pyrimidinyl)imidazolylidene), [Co(L3)(2)](PF6)(3) (3, L3 = bis(N-2-pyrimidylimidazolylidenyl) methane) and [CoCl2(L-3)](PF6) (4) have been prepared from the corresponding pyrimidine functionalized imidazolium salts [HL1](PF6), [HL2](PF6), and [H2L3](PF6)(2) via in situ generated silver carbene complexes under mild conditions. These cobalt complexes were characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The cobalt complexes have been found to be good catalyst precursors for Kumada-Corriu cross-coupling reactions of aryl halides and Grignard reagents at room temperature. Complex 1 is more active under the mild conditions.

Abstract:A dinuclear iron(II) complex Fe2L2(μ2-Cl)2Cl2 (L=N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)prop-2-yn-1-amine) was prepared and fully characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, electrochemical analysis and X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis. The catalytic activity of the complex was assessed for the hydroxylation of aromatic compounds by using aqueous H2O2 as an oxidant in acetonitrile. The catalytic system was applicable in a wide range of substrates including aromatic compounds with both electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents and showed moderate to good catalytic activity and selectivity in the oxidation reactions. Particularly, in the case of benzene the selectivity of phenol achieve to 74% with the reaction conversion of 24.8%.

Abstract:We report herein a synthetically useful catalytic system for aliphatic C−H oxidation with a mononuclear nonheme cobalt(II) complex and m -chloroperbenzoic acid ( m -CPBA). Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that high-valent cobalt-oxygen species (e.g., cobalt(IV)-oxo or cobalt(III)-oxyl) is the responsible oxidant that effects C−H oxidation via a rate-determining hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) step.
