Abstract:A new alkali-metal borogermanate with noncentrosymmetric structure, namely, Cs2GeB4O9, has been discovered, and a large crystal with dimensions of 20 x 16 x 8 mm(3) has been grown by a high-temperature top-seeded solution method using Cs2O-B2O3 as a flux. The compound crystallizes in the tetragonal space group I (4) over bar with a = b = 6.8063(2) angstrom, c = 9.9523(7) angstrom, V = 461.05(4) angstrom(3), and Z = 2. It features a three-dimensional anionic open framework based on GeO4 tetrahedra and B4O9 clusters that are interconnected via corner-sharing, forming one-dimensional channels of nine-/ten-membered rings along the a and b axes, which are occupied by Cs+ cations. Cs2GeB4O9 exhibits a very high thermal stability with a melting point of 849 degrees C, and it possesses a short-wavelength absorption edge onset at 198 nm determined by UV-vis transmission spectroscopy measurements on a slab of polished crystal. Powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurement on sieved crystals reveals that Cs2GeB4O9 is a type I phase-matchable material with a strong SHG response of about 2.8 x KH2PO4. The preliminary investigation indicates that Cs2GeB4O9 is a new promising second-order nonlinear-optical crystalline material.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals have aroused burgeoning interest in recent years owing to their frequency conversion properties and versatile optoelectronic applications. Nevertheless, a current challenge is to excavate NLO crystals with superior overall performance, especially in configurationally rigid silicates. Herein, a new NLO bismuth silicate, Cs2Bi2OSi2O7 (CBSO), was successfully synthesized, which features a 3D structure containing rare face-sharing [BiO5] pyramids and [SiO4] groups. The introduction of highly polarized Bi3+ cations resulted in large induced polarization and an enhanced second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity of 3.5 KDP. Remarkably, CBSO fully meets the precedent conditions for NLO applications, including a wide transparent window, suitable birefringence (0.044 at 1064 nm), good thermal stability with congruent-melting behavior, and facile crystal growth. Besides, first-principles calculations were performed to elucidate the structure–property relationship of CBSO. Abstract:Oxide nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals have drawn wide interest for their comprehensive physical performances including wide infrared (IR) transparency ranges, large band gaps, and good stability in open air. Here, two isostructural germanate oxides, Pb5(GeO4)(Ge2O7) (1) and Pb3.32Ca1.68(GeO4)(Ge2O7) (2), adopting the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) space group P6̅, were composed via a conventional solid-state reaction. The latter was designed by the partial cation substitution strategy based on parent 1. The whole structures of 1 and 2 are composed of isolated distorted GeO4 tetrahedra, Ge2O7 dimers, and diverse M (M = Pb, Ca, or Pb/Ca)-centered polyhedra. They exhibit second-harmonic generation (SHG) responses around 3.3 and 1.4 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP) under 1.064 μm laser radiation, respectively. Theoretical calculation results reveal that the Pb2+ cations with stereo-active long pair (SCALP) electrons of 1 favor the large SHG response, while Pb-based polyhedra showing inert SCALP electrons make predominant contributions to the moderate SHG effect of 2.

Abstract:The quaternary selenide Ba4GeSb2Se11 was prepared by a high-temperature solid state reaction method. Ba4GeSb2Se11 crystallizes in an acentric orthorhombic space group Cmc21 with the lattice constants a = 9.370(11) Å, b = 25.850(0) Å, and c = 8.798(10) Å. The compound is composed of a [SbSe3]3– trigonal pyramid, [GeSbSe5]3– dimers, V-shaped Se32–, and the adjacent Ba2+ ions. It has indirect band gap of 1.35 eV and exhibits a second harmonic generation intensity of about 0.2 times that of the benchmark compound AgGaS2 at the same particle size. Abstract:New chalcohalide glasses from the GeS2–Ga2S3–CdI2 glassy system have been prepared using the well-established melt-quenching method and its glass-forming region was given in this paper. According to the comprehensive consideration of thermal properties, the glass with the composition 0.8GeS2–0.1Ga2S3–0.1CdI2 was estimated to be the optimum composition within the studied glassy system. And its nonlinear refractive index n2 of this glassy sample was estimated to be 7.5×10−15cm2/W according to femtosecond time-resolved optical Kerr gate (OKG) measurement technique. The full width at half-maximum of the third-order correlation signal was 155fs. Widely transmittance window, good glass-forming ability, higher χ(3) and large electronic ultrafast OKG response make these glasses the potential applications in current photonic field such as ultra-fast all-optical switching devices.

Abstract:The spontaneous crystallization approach was used to synthesize two non-centrosymmetric scandium borate crystal materials, K3ScB6O12 (1) and K6NaSrSc2B15O30 (2), possessing the [B5O10]5− group. Both compounds exhibit wide band gaps of 5.75 and 5.92 eV, respectively. The second harmonic generation (SHG) effects of 1 and 2 are 1.3 and 0.7 times that of the commercial material KH2PO4 (KDP), respectively. According to the Kurtz-Perry approach, 2 demonstrates type-I phase-matchable. First-principles calculations on 2 are done to better understand the link between structure and performance. The calculated results reveal that the discrete arrangement of [B5O10]5− groups and the distorted ScO6 polyhedra in the structure are mainly responsible for the SHG response of 2. Furthermore, since 1 and 2 possess short ultraviolet (UV) cut-off edges, they may be applicable as nonlinear optical (NLO) materials in the UV region.

Abstract:As potential candidates for deep-UV nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals, borosilicates and borogermanates, which contain NLO-active groups such as B-O, Si-O and Ge-O, have fascinated many scientists. The crystal structures, electronic structures and optical properties of seven borates in different B/R (R = Si, Ge) ratios have been studied using DFT methods. Through the SHG-density, we find that besides the recognized contribution of the π-conjugation configuration of BO3 to second harmonic generation (SHG), the tetrahedra have a non-negligible influence. This is because the non-bonding p orbitals of the bridging oxygen in the tetrahedra are observably closer to the Fermi level than those in BO3, which is observed in the PDOS of Rb4Ge3B6O17 and RbGeB3O7. This conclusion would be very meaningful in the understanding of the relationship between the crystal structure and nonlinear optical properties.

Abstract:An acentric 3D zeolitic galloborate (GBO) KCs2[GaB5O10](OH) (1) has been successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The alternation of GaO4 and B5O10 clusters constructs the 3D zeolitic framework of 1, exhibiting the unique and topology with different 8-/12-MR and open channels along different directions, which were first observed in zeolitic borates. Second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements reveal that 1 is a phase-matchable nonlinear optical material with an SHG response of about 1.4 times that of KDP (KH2PO4). A UV–vis spectrum shows that 1 has a cutoff edge of 199 nm, indicating its potential applications in deep-UV regions.

Abstract:Designing new ultraviolet nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals with strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) response and a deep ultraviolet cutoff edge is an unremitting pursuit of scientific researchers, accompanied by the key issues of how to realize a noncentrosymmetric structure with the ideal arrangement of ultraviolet NLO-active genes. Herein, a strategy that creates halogen-centered secondary building blocks with rare-earth atoms was used for further design, and we synthesized rationally an unprecedented NLO crystal Cs2La2B10O17Cl4 exhibiting the largest SHG response (2.1 × KDP) among borates with [B5O11] as the fundamental building blocks. The unique role of Cl-centered secondary building blocks in regulating the arrangement of the B–O framework and enhancing nonlinearity was discussed in detail, which will bring the researcher a perspective in designing new NLO crystals.

Abstract:A new noncentrosymmetric cadmium indium borate, Cd4InO(BO3)3 (CIBO) has been successfully developed via a standard solid-state reaction. Its crystal structure was confirmed by the single crystal X-ray diffraction, which shows that CIBO belongs to the non-centrosymmetric and polar space group Cm. Its structure contains the distorted InO6 and CdOn (n = 6, 8) polyhedra, which link together by sharing an edge or corner to build a three dimensions framework with BO3 triangles accommodated in tunnels. Benefiting from the approximately parallel configuration of BO3 triangles, CIBO exhibited a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) effect (3 × KDP), and moderate birefringence of 0.077@1064 nm. Further optical and thermal characterizations suggest that CIBO possesses a wide transparent window and good thermal stability. Theoretical calculation reveals that the macroscopic SHG coefficients of CIBO results from the synergistic effect of the parallel arrangement of BO3 groups and d10 Cd2+ cation.

Abstract:Incommensurately modulated borate structures of a new type were studied in detail in the nonlinear optical (NLO) materials Cs(2)TB4O9 (T = Ge, Si) using single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The structures were solved by the charge-flipping algorithm in the superspace group I2(αβ0)0. The refinement results strongly suggest that the main structure modulation feature of Cs(2)TB4O9 is the ordering of the O atoms. With these modulated structure models, the unreasonable B-O distances in the average structures were explained as the ordering of BO4 and BO3.

Abstract:New chalcohalide glasses from GeS2–In2S3–CsCl pseudo-ternary system were prepared using the conventional melt-quenching method and its glass-forming region has been determined. The differences ΔT (TP−Tg) of partial glasses are large enough (>100K) to permit the preparation of performs of considerable size. With the increased content of CsCl, the visible absorption edge (λvis) of these glasses indicates a distinct blue shift while a clear drop of their glass transition temperatures can be seen. The ultrafast non-linearity of partial glasses was measured using the Kerr shutter technique. The non-linear refractive index, n2, was estimated to be in the magnitude of 10−14cm2/W. Widely transparent range, good glass-forming ability, higher χ(3) and large electronic ultrafast OKE response make these glasses the potential applications in current photonic fields.
