Abstract:Gibbs energy modeling of Ag-Ge and Ag-Ge-Ni systems was done using the calculation of the phase diagram method with associated data from this work and relevant literature information. In the Ag-Ge system, the solidus temperatures of Ag-rich alloys are measured using differential thermal analysis, and the energy of mixing for the FCC_A1 phase is calculated using the special quasi-random structures technique. The isothermal sections of the Ag-Ge-Ni system at 1023 K and 673 K are also experimentally determined. These data and findings in the relevant literature are used to model the Gibbs energy of the Ag-Ge and Ag-Ge- Ni systems. A reaction scheme and a liquidus projection of the Ag-Ge-Ni system are determined.

Abstract:Phase diagrams of two isothermal sections of the Ni–Ti–Ta ternary system at 1000 and 1200 °C in a full composition range were determined by X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis. The experimental results indicated a ternary compound τ phase with low solid solubility and composition ranges of (16.3–22.4) at.% Ta, (15.9–24.1) at.% Ti and (58.5–60.0) at.% Ni at 1000 °C. The two terminal solid solutions (bcc-(Ta) and β-Ti) formed a continuous solid solution at 1000 and 1200 °C. A certain amount of Ti can dissolve into Ni–Ta intermetallic compounds near the Ni–Ta side, with the highest value of 21.9 at.% observed in the Ni2Ta compound at 1000 °C.

Abstract:Co-Fe-Ge is an important material system for magnetic and catalyst applications. However, phase equilibria information of the Co-Fe-Ge ternary system is limited. Ternary Co-Fe-Ge alloys equilibrated at 950 degrees C were prepared. The microstructures, chemical compositions and crystal structure of each phase were determined. The phase equilibria isothermal section at 950 degrees C of the Co-Fe-Ge ternary system was then proposed. A continuous solid solution phase was formed between the Co5Ge3 and Fe5Ge3 phases and was labeled the beta(Co,Fe)5Ge3 phase. There are five three-phase regions in the system at 950 degrees C. A wide alpha 2 single-phase, and liquid phase regions with large composition ranges being confirmed at the Ge-poor and Ge-rich sides, respectively.

Abstract:The isothermal section of the Mo–Ni–Zr system at 1100°C was investigated by characterization of eight equilibrium alloys. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) were used to identify the stable phases and obtain their compositions. The Mo–Ni–Zr system was then optimized by means of CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) technique with the consideration of experimental data obtained in the present work and reported in the literature. The liquid, fcc, bcc and hcp solution phases, were modeled with (sub-)regular solution model. The compound Zr65Mo18−xNi16.5+x (τ1, cF96-Ti2Ni) was described as Zr2(Mo, Ni) based on its crystal structure and solubility range. While τ2 (Zr65Mo27.3Ni7.7) phase was modeled as a stoichiometric compound due to its limited homogeneity range. A set of self-consistent thermodynamic parameters for the Mo–Ni–Zr system was finally obtained. Comprehensive comparisons between the calculated and experimental phase diagram data show that the experimental information is satisfactorily accounted for by the present thermodynamic description. The liquidus projection and reaction scheme of the Mo–Ni–Zr system were also generated by using the present thermodynamic parameters.

Abstract:The isothermal section of the Ni-Sn-Zn ternary system at 500°C was investigated by means of x-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectrometry (SEM/EDS). A new ternary compound with a composition of Ni36Sn42Zn22 (in at.%) was discovered in the present study. The space group of this compound is P \( \overline{\textit{4}}\) 3m with lattice parameter a = 0.88283(4) nm. Two ternary phases, i.e., τ1 and τ2, which are derived from α′-Ni3Sn2 and β-NiZn, respectively, were observed to be present at 500°C. The solubility of Sn in Ni2Zn11 was determined to be about 3.5 at.%, and that of Zn in Ni3Sn to be about 5 at.%.

Abstract:The phase equilibria of the ternary Ni-Cr-Zr system and interfacial reactions in the Ni-Cr/Zr couples at 900 °C were determined. Fifty alloys were prepared from pure Ni, Cr, and Zr. The alloys were metallographically analyzed. Both X-ray diffraction and electron-probe microanalysis (EPMA) were carried out for structural identification and compositional analysis of phases formed in these alloys. At 900 °C, the Cr-Ni 10 Zr 7 two-phase region divides the system into two halves. ZrCr 2 (C14) exists in the Zr-Cr-Ni 10 Zr 7 half, and the ZrCr 2 (C15) phase has an extensive ternary solubility. In the Cr-Ni 10 Zr 7 -Ni half, except for the Ni 7 Zr 2 phase, most of the binary Zr-Ni compounds are in equilibrium with either Cr or Ni phase. Reaction-couple techniques were used for the interfacial reaction study. The reaction path was Zr/NiZr 2 /NiZr/Ni 10 Zr 7 /Ni 21 Zr 8 /Cr/Ni-Cr alloy in the Ni-Cr/Zr couples examined in this study. The results indicate that Ni is the fastest-diffusing species, while Cr is the slowest one.

Abstract:The phases formed at the interfaces of nickel and Ag-Cu alloys were determined by studying the reaction diffusion couples together with the isothermal sections of the Ag-Cu-Ni system at the annealing temperatures. Phase equilibria at 860, 795 and 700 °C, were determined by both experimental investigation and model calculation. The reaction diffusion couples were prepared with either the Ag-15 wt% Cu alloy with nickel foil, or Ag-28 wt% Cu alloy with nickel foil, and were annealed at the three above-mentioned temperatures. The interfaces of the reaction layers in the couples were non-planar. By using microscopes and EPMA, the phase sequences formed in the reaction diffusion couples were determined. These diffusion paths were in agreement with the phase equilibria study, and it demonstrated that the tie triangle shifted towards the nickel side as temperature increased. The thickness of the reacted layers was determined by using an image analyser, and a parabolic growth was found for the Ni/Ag-28 wt% Cu couple annealed at 795 °C.

Abstract:The phase relationships of the Ti-Mn-Mo ternary system on the Ti-Mn side at 900 and 1000 °C were experimentally studied based on microstructure and phase constituents from the equilibrated alloys using electron probe microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The solubilities of Mo in the βTiMn, TiMn 2 , TiMn 3 and TiMn 4 phases of the Ti-Mn system were measured. A three-phase region and seven two-phase regions were experimentally determined. No ternary compounds were found. Based on the experimental data and the thermodynamic descriptions of the three binary sub-systems available in the literature, a set of thermodynamic parameters of the Ti-Mn-Mo ternary system was obtained. The calculated isothermal sections and vertical sections agree well with the experimental results. The calculated liquidus projection and invariant reaction scheme of the Ti-Mn-Mo ternary system are also presented. The present work can provide essential experimental and thermodynamic data for the design of biocompatible medical titanium alloys.

Abstract:The ternary alloy systems Ti-Nb-C, Ti-Ta-C, and Ti-Mo-C were investigated by means of X-ray, melting point, DTA, and metallographic techniques and phase diagrams for all three systems from 1500C through the melting range were established. The solid state phase relationships in all three systems are similar. The cubic monocarbides are completely miscible, whereas the subcarbides, Nb(Ta,Mo)C2 show limited solubility and are terminated by three-phase equilibria Me + Me2C + MeC1-x in the ternary. The sublattice order- disorder transition in the subcarbides are lowered by titanium substitutions. The monocarbide solutions in all three systems show a regular melting behavior. The phase relationships of the three systems are discussed and the differences in particular equilibria related to the thermodynamic properties of the phases in the boundary systems.

Abstract:GeTe is a mid-temperature thermoelectric compound that has shown promise for use in thermoelectric modules. In this study, the interfacial reactions between Ni and GeTe are carried out to determine the suitability of Ni as a barrier layer. Furthermore, the Ni-Ge-Te phase equilibria isothermal sections at 500°C and 400°C are not available in the literature. They have been determined to provide fundamental information and for better understanding of the Ni/GeTe interfacial reactions. Ni-Ge-Te alloys were prepared and equilibrated at 500°C and 400°C revealing two ternary compounds, Ni3GeTe2 and Ni5.45GeTe2, and insignificant ternary solubilities in most of the binary compounds. Ni/GeTe couples were prepared by electroplating Ni on the GeTe substrate, and the reaction layer thickness was 71 μm in the Ni/GeTe couple reacted at 500°C for 24 h. The reaction path was Ni/(Ni3Te2 + Ni)/Ni3Ge/(Ni3Ge + Ni5.45GeTe2)/(Ni5.45GeTe2 + Ni5Ge3)/(Ni5Ge3 + Ni3GeTe2)/(NiGe + Ni3GeTe2)/GeTe at 500°C, and was Ni/(Ni5Ge3 + Ni5.45GeTe2)/(Ni5Ge3 + Ni3GeTe2)/(NiGe + Ni3GeTe2)/GeTe at 400°C. Ni was the primary diffusion species in the Ni/GeTe couples at both temperatures. Significant interfacial reactions were observed in the Ni/GeTe couples reacted at 500°C and 400°C, indicating that Ni might not be suitable as a barrier layer.

Abstract:In the present work, the phase equilibria of the Cr-Nb-Ru system at 1100 ℃ were investigated via a combination of diffusion triple and equilibrated alloys. The samples were examined by means of X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis. The isothermal section of the Cr-Nb-Ru ternary system at 1100 ℃ was constructed, which consists of 11 single-phase regions, 19 two-phase regions, and 9 three-phase regions. One new ternary compound τ was discovered. The homogeneity ranges for the phases in this system are established. Three miscibility gaps were observed, corresponding to Cr solid dissolved in HCP(Ru), Nb solid dissolved in HCP(Ru) and Ru solid dissolved in BCC(Cr),respectively. The miscibility gap of Nb and Cr solid dissolved in HCP(Ru) go through each other.

Abstract:Phase equilibria in the Fe-Nb-Zr system at 1,200 A degrees C were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. Extensive NbFe2 domain was proposed in the current work. This compound existed in the composition range from 35 at% to 73 at% Fe, 12 at% to 32 at% Nb, and 0 to 32 at% Zr. In the present work, four three-phase regions (1) beta-(Nb,Zr) + NbFe + NbFe2, (2) beta-(Nb,Zr) + NbFe2 + Liquid, (3) NbFe2 + Liquid + ZrFe2, and (4) ZrFe2 + Fe + NbFe2, were established.

Abstract:Ternary Sn-Zn-Ni alloys were prepared and equilibrated at 250 degrees C for 4-15 weeks. The phases formed in these equilibrated alloys were determined experimentally. The isothermal section of Sn-Zn-Ni system was constructed, based on the phase diagrams of the three constituent binary systems and the ternary phase equilibria data, determined in this study and referenced in literatures. 12 single-phase regions were identified in the Sn-Zn-Ni ternary system at 250 degrees C, including the three ternary compounds, delta, tau(1) and tau(2). There were 13 ternary phase regions and 23 binary phase regions in the 250 degrees C Sn-Zn-Ni isothermal section. The solubility of Zn in the binary Sn-Ni compounds is significant, and is 15.1% (mole fraction) in the Ni(3)Sn phase.

Abstract:Ternary alloys samples with 22, 25 and 23 different compositions were prepared for determining isothermal sections at 1123, 1223 and 1373 K, respectively. The microstructures, phase constituents and phase compositions of the annealed Cu-Nb-Ni alloys were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. Two three-phase regions, , fcc + bcc(Nb) + Nb 7 Ni 6 , and three two-phase regions, , fcc + Nb 7 Ni 6 , are determined for isothermal sections at 1123 and 1223 K. Two three-phase regions, , liquid + bcc(Nb) + Nb 7 Ni 6 , and three two-phase regions, , liquid + Nb 7 Ni 6 , are determined for isothermal sections at 1373 K. The solubilities of Cu in NbNi 3 and Nb 7 Ni 6 were determined to be ~ 9.6 at.% and ~ 11.4 at.% at 1123 K, ~ 10.8 at.% and ~ 12.4 at.% at 1223 K and ~ 11.2 at.% and ~ 12.8 at.% at 1373 K, respectively. No ternary compounds were found. Based on the experimental phase equilibria data from the literature and the present work, a thermodynamic description of the Cu-Nb-Ni system was carried out by CALPHAD method. The substitutional solution model and sublattice model were employed to describe the solution phases and intermediate phases, respectively. A set of self-consistent thermodynamic parameters of the Cu-Nb-Ni system was conclusively obtained. Most of the reliable experimental data were reproduced by the present thermodynamic modeling.

Abstract:The isothermal section of the Ho-Ni-Si system at 773 K was constructed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) in this work. The system contains sixteen known type structure compounds TiNiSi-type HoNiSi, BaAl4-type HoNi2Si2, CeNiSi2-type HoNiSi2, U2Co3Si5-type Ho2Ni3Si5, SmNiGe3-type HoNiSi3, Ce3Ni6Si2-type Ho3Ni6Si2, ThMn12-type HoNi10Si2, YPd2Si-type HoNi2Si, YNi5Si3-type HoNi5Si3, YNi4Si-type HoNi4Si, Gd3NiSi2-type Ho3NiSi2, YNi6Si6-type HoNi6Si6, AlB2-type Ho2NiSi3, AlB2-type Ho3Ni2Si4, AlB2-type Ho4NiSi7, Gd3Ru4Al12-type Ho8Ni31Si11, and one unknown type structure compound Ho5Ni2Si3. At the same time, one unknown structure new phase Ho37Ni3Si60 was observed. In ternary compounds, Ho2NiSi3 and Ho4NiSi7 have the solid solution phenomena; the solid solution ranges are about Ho33.3Ni18.7-9.7Si∼48.0-57.0 and Ho33.Ni∼8.3-2.6Si∼58.3-64.1, respectively. At the same time, quasi–binary solid solutions were detected at 773 K for Ho2Ni17, HoNi5, Ho2Ni7, HoNi3, HoNi2, HoNi, HoSi. Other binary compounds of the Ho-Ni-Si system do not show any visible solubility. Abstract:There are no previous phase equilibria studies of the Sn–Ag–Ni ternary system, even though the phase equilibria information is important for the electronic industry. The isothermal section of the Sn–Ag–Ni ternary system at 240 °C has been determined in this study both by experimental examination and thermodynamic calculation. Experimental results show no existence of ternary compounds in the Sn–Ag–Ni system, and all the constituent binary compounds have very limited solubilities of the ternary elements. The binary Ni3Sn2 phase is very stable and is in equilibrium with most of the phases, Ag3Sn, ζ-Ag4Sn, Ag, Ni3Sn4 and Ni3Sn phases. A preliminary thermodynamic model of the ternary system is developed based on the models of the three binary constituent systems without introducing any ternary interaction parameters. This ternary thermodynamic model is used with a commercial software Pandat to calculate the Sn–Ag–Ni 240 °C isothermal section. The phase relationships determined by calculation are consistent with those determined experimentally. Besides phase equilibria determination, the interfacial reactions between the Sn–Ag alloys with Ni substrate are investigated at 240, 300 and 400 °C, respectively. It is found that the phase formations in the Sn–3.5wt%Ag/Ni couples are very similar to those in the Sn/Ni couples.

Abstract:In this work, two isothermal sections of the Co-Ta-Si ternary system at 900 °C and 1100 °C are constructed in the whole composition range via phase equilibrium determination with the help of electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Firstly, several reported ternary phases G (Co16Ta6Si7), G″ (Co4TaSi3), E (CoTaSi), L (Co3Ta2Si) and V (Co4Ta4Si7) are all re-confirmed again. The G″ phase is found to be a kind of high-temperature compound, which is unstable at less than 1100 °C. Additionally, the L phase with a large composition range (Co32-62Ta26-36Si10-30) crystallizes with a hexagonal crystal structure (space group: P63/mmc, C14), which is the same as that of the binary high-temperature λ1-Co2Ta phase. It can be reasonably speculated that the ternary L phase results from the stabilization toward low-temperature of the binary λ1-Co2Ta through adding Si. Secondly, the binary CoTa2 and SiTa2 phases are found to form a continuous solid solution phase (Co, Si)Ta2 with a body-centered tetragonal structure. Thirdly, the elemental Si shows a large solid solubility for Co-Ta binary compounds while the Ta and Co are hardly dissolved in Co-Si and Ta-Si binary phases, respectively.
