Abstract:A cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-type hydroboration of terminal alkynes with HBpin to access alpha-alkenyl boronates with good regioselectivity and atom economy is reported. A new ligand has been developed for the cobalt hydride catalyst that has been used for a unique Markovnikov selective insertion of terminal alkynes into metal hydride bond. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance to deliver valuable alkene derivatives.

Abstract:An efficient aluminum-catalyzed selective hydroboration of alkenes and alkynylsilanes is reported. A wide variety of alkenes and alkynylsilanes bearing various functional groups and heterocyclic substituents were converted to boronic ester products in good yields with high selectivity. Mechanistically, density functional theory calculations favored a mechanism involving the insertion of the double bond into the Al–H species followed by C–Al/B–H metathesis.

Abstract:An iron-catalyzed hydroboration of vinylcydo-propane with HBpin is first reported for the preparation of valuable homoallylic organoboronic esters. The iron catalysts enable efficient and regioselective C-C cleavage of vinylcyclo-propanes, stereoselectively delivering E-alkenes with good stereospecific selectivity at an allylic position. This protocol exhibits mild conditions with good functional group tolerability. The chiral homoallylic organoboronic esters could be further converted into chiral polysubstituted tetrahydrofuran and tetrahydropyran.

Abstract:We have developed a method for a B(C6F5)3-catalyzed hydroboration/hydrogenation cascade reduction of pyridines. The method was particularly effective for 2,3-disubstituted pyridines, which generated piperidines in high yields with high cis selectivity. Mechanistic studies indicated that the pyridine substrates and the piperidine products sequentially acted as bases in cooperation with B(C6F5)3 to split H2. Abstract:A novel strategy for boron-mediated C-H hydroxylation of 1-phenyl-1H-pyrazoles is presented. The protocol exhibits high efficiency and site exclusivity, offering the corresponding phenols in moderate to excellent yields with wide functional group tolerance under simple and metal-free conditions. Moreover, the hydroxylated products show good derivatization applications. This route provides a convenient and practical way to obtain functionalized 1-phenyl-1H-pyrazoles.

Abstract:A highly enantioselective cobalt-catalyzed hydroboration of diaryl ketones with pinacolborane was developed using chiral imidazole iminopyridine as a ligand to access chiral benzhydrols in good to excellent yields and ee. This protocol could be carried out in a gram scale under mild reaction conditions with good functional group tolerance. Chiral biologically active 3-substituted phthalide and (S)-neobenodine could be easily constructed through asymmetric hydroboration as a key step.

Abstract:We herein report the regio- and chemoselective hydroboration of terminal alkynes with pinacolborane by a series of Constrained-geometry Catalyst-type or CGC-type rare earth metal monoalkyl complexes. This protocol offers a 100% atom-efficient and straightforward route for the synthesis of a variety of (E)-1-alkenylborons with the advantages such as high yield, high E-selectivity up to >99.9%, multiple metal center, broad substrate scope, broad functional-group tolerance, and no need for a solvent. A gram-scale synthesis and subsequent transformations of (E)-1-alkenylboron to several functional compounds suggest the practical applications of this synthetic methodology. The reaction mechanism has been explored through ESI-MS, isotopic labeling experiments, and in-situ 1H NMR spectroscopy

Abstract:A ligand-controlled cobalt-catalyzed regioselective hydroboration/cyclization of 1,6-enynes with HBPin was developed by switching the size of the coordinated side arm to afford alkenylboronates and alkylboronates, respectively. Gram-scale reactions could be easily conducted, which is beneficial for further derivatizations. A primary mechanism was proposed on the basis of substrate-controlled experiments and deuterium experiments.

Abstract:Borenium-catalyzed hydroboration reactions of a stable, readily available N-heterocyclic carbene-borane with allyl-, alkenyl-, and alkynylsilane substrates provides either standard 1,2-hydroboration products or rearranged 1,1-hydroboration products, depending on the structure of the substrate. A competent catalyst can be generated in situ by addition of bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide or diiodine. In a typical 1,2-hydroboration, reaction of 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidine borane (diMe-Imd-BH3) with 1,2-bis(trimethylsilyl)ethene provides 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidine (1,2-bis(trimethylsilyl)ethyl)borane (diMe-Imd-BH2CH-(TMS)CH2TMS)) as a stable product. In a typical 1,1-hydroboration, the reaction of diMe-Imd-BH3 with bis(trimethylsilyl)-ethyne provides 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidine-bis(2,2-bis(trimethylsilyl)ethenyl)borane (diMe-Imd-BH(CH=C(TMS)(2))(2) again as a stable product.

Abstract:The first inverse hydroboration of pyridine with a diboron(4) compound and a proton source has been realized under simple basic and catalyst-free conditions. This process consists of a formal boryl anion addition to pyridine, which produces an N-boryl pyridyl anion complex, and the subsequent protonation of the anion complex. This process enables a simple and efficient method for the synthesis of multi-substituted N-H 1,4-dihydropyridine (1,4-DHP) derivatives that are difficult to prepare using established methods. Furthermore, this method allows for facile preparation of 4-deuterated 1,4-DHPs from an easily accessible deuterium ion source. This inverse hydroboration reaction represents a new mode for pyridine functionalization.

Abstract:Hydroboration of conjugated enyne alcohol/amine is studied by using copper salts and bis(pinacolato)diboron as pre-catalysts and boron source respectively. It is suggested that the chemo-selectivity is derived from a combined electronic influence of the heteroatoms on the substrate and the ligand on the transition metal. The regioselectivity is probably dominated mainly by electronic effect of the alkyne substituent. Abstract:Recently, it was shown that Piers’ borane [HB(C6F5)2]2 can induce rapid oligomerization reactions of arylacetylenes and arylallenes. Using phenylallene PhCH=C=CH2 and phenylacetylene PhC≡CH as typical substrates, the detailed mechanisms of borane‐induced oligomerization are disclosed by extensive state‐of‐the‐art DFT calculations. Following initial regio‐selective hydroboration of unsaturated C=C or C≡C bonds, further oligomerization and structural rearrangement reactions may occur via unique boryl‐enabled conversions such as 1,3‐boryl‐shift, allylboration, 1,2‐carboboration, and 1,5‐electrocyclization. Together with stepwise transborylation with hydroboranes such as pinacolborane HBpin, such fundamental reactions may pave a catalytic way to borane‐induced oligomerization of arylacetylenes and arylallenes.

Abstract:Organoboron reagents are important synthetic intermediates that have a key role in the construction of natural products, pharmaceuticals and organic materials1. The discovery of simpler, milder and more efficient approaches to organoborons can open additional routes to diverse substances2-5. Here we show a general method for the directed C-H borylation of arenes and heteroarenes without the use of metal catalysts. C7- and C4-borylated indoles are produced by a mild approach that is compatible with a broad range of functional groups. The mechanism, which is established by density functional theory calculations, involves BBr3 acting as both a reagent and a catalyst. The potential utility of this strategy is highlighted by the downstream transformation of the formed boron species into natural products and drug scaffolds.

Abstract:This review summarizes the recent developed strategies for the catalytic selective functionalization of poly(organoborons), encompassing Pd‐ or Cu‐catalyzed coupling reactions, radical coupling reactions, as well as stereoselective transformations of these compounds. Comprehensive Summary Organoborons are commonly used building blocks for rapidly increasing molecular complexity. Although significant progress has been made in the selective functionalization of mono‐organoborons, the site‐selective functionalization of poly(organoborons) has attracted substantial interest in organic synthesis, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals due to the presence of multiple potential reaction sites. This review discusses various activation modes of the target C–B bond, with diverse transformations being achieved in both a selective and efficient manner. Recent advances in the catalytic selective transformations of 1,n‐diboronates through ionic and radical pathways are highlighted. Furthermore, we summarize the existing challenges and future research directions in this field. Key Scientists In 1993, Suzuki, Miyaura and coworkers developed a pioneering example of selective arylation towards cis‐1,2‐bis(boryl) alkenes, marking the inception of this field. The Morken group has made significant contributions to the asymmetric diboration of alkenes and realized elegant catalytic functionalization of these compounds since 2004. In 2016, Fernández and colleagues achieved the selective arylation of the internal C–B bond of tri(boronates). Since 2019, the Aggarwal group has developed efficient Giese‐type addition and selective arylation at the more substituted C–B bond of 1,2‐bis(boronic) esters through photoredox catalysis. The controllable regiodivergent alkynylation of 1,3‐bis(boronic) esters was developed by Gao and coworkers in 2023. Recently, Qin conducted elegant research on the programmable late‐stage functionalization of bridge‐substituted bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane (BCP) bis‐boronates. Since 2013, catalytic stereoselective transformations have been developed by several groups, including those led by Morken and Chen. This review summarizes the latest and most significant developments in this field since 1993.

Abstract:Cobalt( II ) complexes were prepared from a modular phosphinopyridonate platform and applied to the hydroboration of pyridines. The synthetically useful, yet challenging, double hydroboration toward tetrahydropyridine derivatives was successfully performed with high activity and regiocontrol. This new method enabled the direct synthesis of N -heterocyclic allylic boronates from commercial pyridines and pinacolborane (HBpin). One-pot acetylation afforded the bench-stable borylated N -acetyl tetrahydropyridines in good yields. The synthetic utility of this procedure was demonstrated by a gram-scale double hydroboration–acetylation sequence followed by chemical diversification. Mechanistic experiments indicated metal–ligand cooperativity involving ligand-centered C–H activation and the intermediacy of a cobalt( III ) hydride species.
