Abstract:A highly enantioselective cobalt-catalyzed hydroboration of diaryl ketones with pinacolborane was developed using chiral imidazole iminopyridine as a ligand to access chiral benzhydrols in good to excellent yields and ee. This protocol could be carried out in a gram scale under mild reaction conditions with good functional group tolerance. Chiral biologically active 3-substituted phthalide and (S)-neobenodine could be easily constructed through asymmetric hydroboration as a key step.

Abstract:A cobalt-catalyzed asymmetric hydroboration of styrenes using an imidazoline phenyl picoliamide (ImPPA) ligand was first reported to deliver the valuable chiral secondary organoboronates with good functional tolerance and high enantioselectivity (up to u003e99% ee). This protocol is operationally simple without any activator. Particularly, this method can be applied in the asymmetric hydroboration of allylamine to afford 1,3-amino alcohol, which is a key intermediate for the synthesis of fluoxetine and atomoxetine. Furthermore, control experiments, isotopic labeling experiments, and qualitative and quantitative kinetic studies were also conducted to figure out the primary mechanism.

Abstract:A cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-type hydroboration of terminal alkynes with HBpin to access alpha-alkenyl boronates with good regioselectivity and atom economy is reported. A new ligand has been developed for the cobalt hydride catalyst that has been used for a unique Markovnikov selective insertion of terminal alkynes into metal hydride bond. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance to deliver valuable alkene derivatives.

Abstract:Enantioselective hydroboration of ketones and imines provides a powerful method to access valuable chiral alcohols and amines which are widely used in organic synthesis, materials science, pharmaceutical, agrochemistry and fine chemical industry. After invented in 1991, pinacolborane (HBpin) as a stable, commercially available and measurably simple reductive reagent has been widely applied in hydroboration of carbonyl derivatives, imines and nitriles and relevant mechanistic investigation. In the past 5 years, HBpin has also been employed for asymmetric catalytic hydroboration (CHB) to access chiral alcohols and amines. The enantioselective CHB reactions of ketones and imines using HBpin are outlined according to the classification of different catalysts, such as earth abundant transition metals, main group elements, and rare-earth metals.

Abstract:A highly regio- and enantioselective cobalt-catalyzed hydroboration/hydrogenation of internal alkynes with HBpin and a hydrogen balloon in one pot was developed. A new type of chiral imidazoline iminopyridine (IIP) ligand was introduced for the first time in this novel and efficient strategy. This protocol used relatively simple and available starting materials with good functional group tolerance to construct more valuable chiral secondary organoboronates. The primary mechanistic studies illustrated that the cobalt-catalyzed regioselective hydroboration of alkynes did initially occur followed by HBpin-promoted and cobalt-catalyzed enantioselective hydrogenation of alkenylboronates.

Abstract:A cobalt-catalyzed asymmetric sequential hydroboration/isomerization/hydroboration of 2-aryl vinylcyclopropanes was for the first time reported for the preparation of valuable chiral 1,5-bis(boronates) in good yields with excellent enantioselectivity via asymmetric sequential isomerization/hydroboration of a trisubstituted alkene intermediate. The reaction was carried out smoothly and this protocol was used for asymmetric syntheses of (-)-preclamol in gram-scale. The two primary C(sp3) -B bonds in chiral 1,5-bis(boronates) could be distinguished in iterative Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction, delivering chiral 1,2,5-triaryl alkanes with excellent enantioselectivity. Based on experimental and computational studies, a cobalt-hydride species was proposed as the active intermediate in hydroboration, isomerization, and second hydroboration reactions.

Abstract:An efficient pincer-ligand-based cobalt-complex-catalyzed allene hydroboration affording Z-allylic boronates is described. The reaction demonstrates an excellent regio- as well as Z-stereoselectivity and a wide substrate scope that tolerates many functional groups. Based on solvent-assisted electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (SAESI-MS) studies, a rationale for the cobalt-catalyzed hydroboration involving the highly selective insertion of an allene into the Co-H bond to form Z-allylic cobalt intermediates is proposed.

Abstract:An oxazoline aminoisopropylpyridine (OAP) was designed and synthesized for cobalt-catalyzed asymmetric hydroboration of sterically hindered styrenes. A unique dual-stereocontrol phenomenon was observed using a rigid OIP-CoCI, complex or a flexible OAP with CoCl2 as precatalysts, respectively. The reaction could be easily carried out on a gram scale to afford chiral alkylboronic esters which could be converted into diverse C-X (X = C, N, O) bond cross-coupling products. The mechanistically distinct pathways were proposed on the basis of deuterium experiments.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the growing interest in the remote functionalization of alkenes for it offers a strategy to activate the challenging C-H bonds distant from the initiation point via alkene isomerization/functionalization. However, the catalytic enantioselective isomerization/functionalization with one single transition metal catalyst remains rare. Here we report a highly regio- and enantioselective cobalt-catalyzed remote C-H bond borylation of internal alkenes via sequential alkene isomerization/hydroboration. A chiral ligand featured twisted pincer, anionic, and non-rigid characters is designed and used for this transformation. This methodology, which is operationally simple using low catalyst loading without additional activator, shows excellent enantioselectivity and can be used to convert various internal alkenes with regio- and stereoisomers to valuable chiral secondary organoboronates with good functional group tolerance.

Abstract:We herein report the regio- and chemoselective hydroboration of terminal alkynes with pinacolborane by a series of Constrained-geometry Catalyst-type or CGC-type rare earth metal monoalkyl complexes. This protocol offers a 100% atom-efficient and straightforward route for the synthesis of a variety of (E)-1-alkenylborons with the advantages such as high yield, high E-selectivity up to >99.9%, multiple metal center, broad substrate scope, broad functional-group tolerance, and no need for a solvent. A gram-scale synthesis and subsequent transformations of (E)-1-alkenylboron to several functional compounds suggest the practical applications of this synthetic methodology. Abstract:An iron-catalyzed hydroboration of vinylcydo-propane with HBpin is first reported for the preparation of valuable homoallylic organoboronic esters. The iron catalysts enable efficient and regioselective C-C cleavage of vinylcyclo-propanes, stereoselectively delivering E-alkenes with good stereospecific selectivity at an allylic position. This protocol exhibits mild conditions with good functional group tolerability. The chiral homoallylic organoboronic esters could be further converted into chiral polysubstituted tetrahydrofuran and tetrahydropyran.

Abstract:Cu-catalyzed enantioselective Cu-B(pin) addition to 1,1-disubstituted alkenes generating tertiary alkylcopper complexes that contain a quaternary stereogenic center, followed by the protonation of the complexes are presented. The resulting formal hydroboration products are formed in up to 98% yield and 99:1 enantiomeric ratio. The C-B(pin) moiety can be converted to a variety of useful functional groups. The method is applied to the enantioselective formal synthesis of (R)-ketoprofen. Detailed stereochemical models for enantioselective induction were elucidated through DFT calculations.
