Abstract:A mild and highly efficient, environmentally friendly procedure has been developed for the conversion from benzofurazan-N-oxides to quinoxaline di-N-oxides in the presence of beta-cyclodextrin in water at room temperature with excellent yields. The application of cyclodextrin precludes the use of organic solvent, and the catalyst can be recovered and reused in subsequent reactions with the same catalytic activity. Herein, the Beirut reaction is carried out in the medium of water for the first time. The reaction mechanism was proposed based on the inclusion complexation of b-cyclodextrin with benzofurazan-N-oxides which was confirmed by H-1 NMR, ultraviolet/visible spectrum, and infrared spectroscopy.

Abstract:An efficient, clean and facile protocol for the Knoevenagel condensation of aromatic aldehydes with active methylene compounds catalysed by task specific ionic liquid 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]-undec-7-en-8-ium acetate in an aqueous medium has been developed. The reactions proceed at room temperature and high to excellent yields were afforded. The work-up procedure is very simple. The ionic liquid could be recycled for 10 runs without noticeably loss of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:A bi-functional sugar-based surfactant ALA14 was designed as the ligand and micelle constructor and demonstrated to promote the copper-catalyzed C-X coupling reaction in water. The nature of this micelle, formed by sugar-based surfactants, was investigated with CMC, DLS, and TEM, via which encapsulating and aggregation of the substrates in micelle were verified. Additionally, it was addressed by 1H-NMR analysis that the enrichment position of the substrates is in the lipophilic alkyl chain. Finally, moderate to excellent yields of the aimed products were obtained in this work. This remarkably simple strategy expanded the scope of C-X coupling reaction in water; most notably, both water and ALA14 can be recycled and reused.

Abstract:An array of novel 1,4-diazobicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) based ionic liquids were developed and used as recyclable catalysts for the aza-Michael addition at room temperature without any organic solvent. [DABCO-PDO][OAc] was found to be the most efficient catalyst, and the amount of catalyst was only 10 mol %. Various amines reacted with a wide range of α,β-unsaturated amides, smoothly affording target products in good to excellent yields within hours. Moreover, the catalyst could be reused up to eight times, still maintaining a high catalytic activity. Finally, a plausible mechanism was proposed. FTIR and computational chemistry were used to verify the catalytic mechanism.

Abstract:This study highlights the effectiveness of sodium deoxycholate in promoting proline‐catalyzed aldol reactions of aromatic aldehydes with cyclohexanone in water without any cosolvent obtaining generally high yields and diastereoselectivity. The study also explores the interaction between L‐proline and sodium deoxycholate, which contributes to the reaction efficiency by improving emulsion stability and dispersing nonpolar substrates. Proline‐catalyzed aldol reaction of aromatic aldehydes with cyclohexanone was successfully carried out in water without any cosolvent in presence of catalytic amounts of bile acid salt surfactants. The bile acid salts, acting as surfactants, facilitate the dispersion of nonpolar substrates, enabling efficient reaction conditions "in presence of water" which exploit the role of water beyond its simple characteristic as a solvent. While enantioselectivity is moderate, the high yields achieved reflect the potent synergy between proline and sodium deoxycholate (NaDC), underscoring the feasibility of water‐exclusive processes in synthetic organic chemistry.

Abstract:Exploration of new and effective routes to conduct organic reactions in water using the special properties of water/organics is of great importance. In this work, we performed the disproportionation of various aromatic alcohols in water and in different organic solvents. It was demonstrated that the disproportionation reactions of the alcohols were accelerated more effectively in water than organic-solvent-based or solvent-free reactions. A series of control experiments were conducted to study the mechanism of the accelerated reaction rate in water. It was shown that the reactants could emulsify the reactant/water systems at the reaction conditions owing to their amphiphilic nature. The regularly orientated reactant molecules at the water/reactant droplet interface improved the contact probability of the reactive groups and the Pd nanocatalysts, which is one of the main reasons for the enhanced reaction rate in water. Controlling the self-emulsification of amphiphilic reactant/water systems has great application potential for optimizing the rate and/or selectivity of many organic reactions.

Abstract:A novel DES was prepared based TBAI (tetrabutylammonium iodide) and PEG200 (polyethylene glycol) for cycloaddition of CO2. Excellent activity was achieved without metal, cocatalyst, solvent and mild conditions. The reactivity was enhanced by devising elaborately the H‐bonds of DESs. The synergy between the components of DES may be the key of this system. Developing a highly efficient and environmentally friendly catalytic system for CO2 cycloaddition reactions is an attractive way to achieve carbon neutrality. In this work, tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were used to produce novel deep eutectic solvents (DESs), which could serve as both solvents and catalysts, displaying excellent activity to synthesis styrene carbonates from CO2 and styrene oxide under metal‐free, cocatalyst‐free, solvent‐free and mild conditions. A detailed study was undertaken on the effects of reaction parameters, recyclability, and substrate scope. Additionally, the H‐bond interaction between the substrate and TBAI/PEG200 was thoroughly investigated using FT‐IR and 1H NMR techniques. The synergistic interaction between the two components of the DES, TBAI, and PEG200, may be the key to the high catalytic activity of this system. The tetrabutylammonium iodide‐based system is an innovative strategy for the CO2 cycloaddition with epoxides, achieved by elaborately devising the H‐bonds of DESs to enhance reactivity. This provides a novel green strategy for potential industrial applications.

Abstract:The role of water as highly effective hydrogen bond donor (HBD) for promoting the coupling reaction of CO2 with a variety of epoxides was demonstrated under very mild conditions (25 °C ≤ T ≤ 60 °C, 2 bar ≤ p(CO2) ≤ 10 bar). Water led to a dramatic increase in the cyclic carbonate yield when employed in combination with Bu4NI, while it had a detrimental effect with the corresponding bromide and chloride salts. The efficiency of water in promoting the activity of the organic halide was compared with state-of-the-art HBDs. Although water requires higher molar loadings to achieve similar degree of conversion of CO2 and styrene oxide into the corresponding cyclic carbonate under the same, mild reaction conditions, its environmental friendliness and much lower cost make it a very attractive alternative as HBD. The effect of different parameters such as the amount of water, CO2 pressure, reaction temperature, and nature of the organic halide used as catalyst was investigated using a high-throughput reactor unit. The highest catalytic activity was achieved with either Bu4NI or PPNI: with both systems, the cyclic carbonate yield at 45 °C with different epoxide substrates could be increased by a factor two or more by adding water as a promoter, while retaining high selectivity. Water is an effective hydrogen bond donor even at room temperature, allowing to reach 85% conversion of propylene oxide with full selectivity towards propylene carbonate in combination with Bu4NI (3 mol%).

Enhancement Of Surfactant On The Dibenzothiophene Biodesulfurization

Abstract:Biodesulfurization (BDS) with dibenzothiophene (DBT) or DBTs as the sulfur model compounds has been studied recently. It was indicated that the overall biotransformation rate depends not only on biokinetic factors, but also on physicochemical constrains that control the bioavailability, when an oil-bacteria-water emulsion is formed. Surfactants, as amphiphilic compounds, have desirable properties including solubility enhancement, surface tension reduction. Thus, surfactants such as soya lecithin (SL), Tween 80 and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) were used in biodesulfurization by Mycobacterium sp. ZD-19 to enhance the mass transfer of DBT in this study. Additionally, the effect of surfactants on the cell growth was also investigated. The results indicate that these three kinds of surfactants would not inhibit the cell growth. Among SL, Tween 80 and β-CD, the 2-hydroxybiphenyl (2-HBP) formation with SL present was 58% more than contrast control (without addition of surfactant).

Abstract:Cyclodextrins, widely applied in green organic synthesis, can transfer hydrophobic molecules into water by the supramolecular interaction. As an important kind of host molecules, they can also influence the microenvironment of hydrophobic molecules by the host-guest interaction and change traditional reaction conditions to obtain good yield without byproduct. The recent developments of application of cyclodextrins in green organic reactions such as oxidation reaction, addition reaction, ring opening reaction, deprotection reaction, coupling reaction, substitution reaction, etc. are reviewed. The catalytic mechanisms are also discussed in this article.

Abstract:For the first time, an eco-friendly and sustainable tandem [5C + 1C] cycloaromatization of α-alkenoyl ketene dithioacetals and nitroethane in water for the efficient synthesis of ortho-acylphenols was reported. In refluxing water, a range of α-alkenoyl ketene dithioacetals and nitroethane smoothly underwent tandem Michael addition/cyclization/aromatization reactions in the presence of 2.0 equivalents of DBU to provide various ortho-acylphenols in excellent yields. The green approach to ortho-acylphenols not only avoided the use of harmful organic solvents, which could result in serious environmental and safety issues, but also exhibited fascinating features such as good substrate scope, excellent yields, simple purification for desired products, ease of scale-up, and reusable aqueous medium.

Abstract:A recyclable protic-ionic-liquid solvent–catalyst system, DABCO–AcOH–H2O, has been developed and used in the Baylis–Hillman reaction of aromatic aldehydes, aliphatic aldehydes, and cinnamaldehydes with acrylates and acrylonitrile, showing comparable performance to free DABCO in traditional solvents. The DABCO–AcOH–H2O solvent–catalyst system could be reused for at least five times without significant loss of activity.

Abstract:The Darzens condensation reaction of aromatic aldehydes with phenacyl chloride proceeded very efficiently in a water suspension medium in the presence of triethylbenzylammonium chloride and only trans-2,3-epoxy-1,3-diaryl-1-propanones were formed which can be isolated simply by filtration.The structures of these compounds were confirmed by elemental analysis,IR and ^1H NMR spectra.Therir configurations are in agreement with that of the same compounds reported in the literature.Compared to the classical Darzens condensation,this new method has the advantages of good yields,high stereoselectivity,low running cost inexpensive and environmentally benign procedure.
Computational and experimental investigation on the BCl3 promoted intramolecular amination of alkenes and alkynes

Abstract:The BX3 promoted transition-metal-free borylative cyclizations have recently attracted increasing attention. In 2015, the Li group reported a BCl3 mediated aminoboration of unfunctionalized olefins. In their originally proposed reaction pathways, the overall reaction barrier was calculated to be about 35 kcal mol(-1), which is too high to be reasonable for a reaction that smoothly occurs at room temperature. Through DFT calculations, we have reinvestigated the mechanism of this reaction and found a much more favorable reaction pathway with a computed activation free energy of about 20 kcal mol(-1). Based on this new mechanism, we then calculated the energy profiles for the BCl3 promoted corresponding aminoboration of alkynes. According to the computational prediction, this transformation could easily take place at room temperature. Later experiments show that the aminoboration product is indeed generated, but the major product of this reaction is the hydroamination product. Through further calculations, we found that an unexpected protodeboronation is quite favored both kinetically and thermodynamically at the post-aminoborylation stage. Finally, we optimized the conditions for the newly discovered metalfree hydroamination reaction and found it suitable for a set of alkyne substrates.

Abstract:Complex ternary supramolecular systems constituted by citral, surfactants, and cyclodextrins were constructed in this paper. The composite emulsifier formed by Tween-80 and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin showed the best synergistic encapsulation effect. The emulsion has the mean particle diameter of 12 nm, a polydispersity index of 0.120 and the maximum entrapment efficiency of 87.25%. The formation of the inclusion was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The amorphous morphology of the inclusion was indicated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Finally, the formation mechanism of the inclusion was explored by means of molecular simulation. The ternary system was the combination of the long-chain Tween-80 with cyclodextrins to form a supramolecular system followed by binding with citral through the H-bond. The main driving force was the van der Waals force. The binding free energy was ΔG bind = −19.15 ± 3.25 kcal/mol, which confirmed that the reaction was a spontaneous process.

Abstract:Regarding the green chemistry's goals, ionic liquids (ILs) open a way to introduce amazing and efficient media for different reactions. Therefore, in the present study, a feasible protocol for the preparation of β-cyclodextrin/imidazolium based dicationic ionic liquid and its supported on silica gel, [βCD/Im](OTs)<sub>2</sub>-Silica are presented. Ability of this eco-friendly microvessel and host ionic liquid system in the one-pot three-components Hantzsch condensation reaction of arylaldehydes, ethylacetoacetate or dimedone and ammonium acetate are also described. The mild and easy reaction conditions, utilization of a catalyst with high catalytic activity and good reusability, and simple work-up procedure, makes this method as an interesting option for the facile and efficient synthesis of 1,4-dihydropyridine and polyhydroquinoline derivatives.
