Abstract:Radical perfluoroalkylation of α-(biaryl-2-yl)vinyl azides is capable of supplying polyfluoroalkyl aza-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (aza-PAHs). Commercially available Me3SiRf (Rf = CF3, C2F5, and C3F7) are employed as the sources of perfluoroalkyl radicals upon oxidation with PhI(OAc)2. The addition of perfluoroalkyl radicals to biarylvinyl azides generates the corresponding iminyl radicals, which subsequently cyclize with the intramolecular arene moiety, furnishing aza-PAH skeletons having polyfluoroalkyl (RfCH2) function.

Abstract:A photoredox and copper-catalyzed fluoroalkylphos-phorothiolation of activated and unactivated alkenes via a radical relay mechanism is reported. By employing fluoroalkyl halides as radical precursors and P(O)SH or P(S)SH compounds as coupling partners, a wide range of beta-monofluoroalkyl-, -difluoroalkyl-, trifluoromethyl-, or -perfluoroalkyl-substituted S-alkyl phosphorothioates and phosphorodithioates can be easily constructed under mild conditions with good functional group tolerance. Furthermore, this modular reaction system can be successfully applied to late-stage functionalization of bioactive molecules.

Abstract:The copper(I)-catalyzed alkylation of electron-deficient polyfluoroarenes with N-tosylhydrazones and diazo compounds has been developed. This reaction uses readily available starting materials and is operationally simple, thus representing a practical method for the construction of C(sp(2))C(sp(3)) bonds with polyfluoroarenes through direct CH bond functionalization. Mechanistically, copper(I) carbene formation and subsequent migratory insertion are proposed as the key steps in the reaction pathway.

Abstract:An efficient method for photocatalytic perfluoroalkylation of vinyl-substituted all-carbon quaternary centers involving 1,2-aryl migration has been developed. The rearrangement reactions use fac-Ir(ppy)(3), visible light and commercially available fluoroalkyl halides and can generate valuable multisubstituted perfluoroalkylated compounds in a single step that would be challenging to prepare by other methods. Mechanistically, the photoinduced alkyl radical addition to an alkene leads to the migration of a vicinal aryl substituent from its adjacent all-carbon quaternary center with the concomitant generation of a C-radical bearing two electron-withdrawing groups that is further reduced by a hydrogen donor to complete the domino sequence.

Abstract:This work describes a general strategy for metal-catalyzed cross-coupling of fluoroalkyl radicals with aryl halides under electrochemical conditions. Abstract:We highlight key contributions in the field of direct radical CAr–H (hetero)aromatic functionalization involving fluorinated radicals. A compilation of Functional Group Transfer Reagents and their diverse activation mechanisms leading to the release of radicals are discussed. The substrate scope for each radical is analyzed and classified into three categories according to the electronic properties of the substrates. Density functional theory computational analysis provides insights into the chemical reactivity of several fluorinated radicals through their electrophilicity and nucleophilicity parameters. Theoretical analysis of their reduction potentials also highlights the remarkable correlation between electrophilicity and oxidizing ability. It is also established that highly fluorinated radicals (e.g.•OCF3) are capable of engaging in single-electron transfer (SET) processes rather than radical addition, which is in good agreement with experimental literature data. A reactivity scale, based on activation barrier of addition of these radicals to benzene is also elaborated using the high accuracy DLPNO-(U)CCSD(T) method.

Abstract:A novel dehydrogenative coupling reaction of N-fluorocarboxamides with polyfluoroarenes forming C(sp2)–C(sp3) bonds enabled by copper catalysis has been accomplished. N-Fluorocarboxamides are postulated to undergo copper-mediated dehydrogenative cross-coupling reaction with electron-deficient polyfluoroarenes via a radical pathway. Benzylic C–H bonds and aliphatic C–H bonds in N-fluorocarboxamides could proceed smoothly and demonstrated excellent regioselectivity. Abstract:Rencently, fluoroalkylation reactions initiated via noncovalent interaction (halogen bond or EDA complexes) have become an attractive method access to fluoro-containing compounds, and most of those reactions were promoted by visible light and stoichiometric electron-donor compounds. Here, a novel atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) reaction promoted by catalytic amount of 1,4-dimethylpiperazine at heating condition is developed. This protocol enables a simple and practical alternative for the effective iododifluoroalkylation of alkenes or alkynes, which features synthetic simplicity, wide substrate scope and feasibility of product transformations.

Abstract:A metal-free and photo-free method for the perfluoroalkylative pyridylation of alkenes has been developed via a combination of computational and experimental studies. Density functional theory calculations and control experiments indicate that the homolysis of R-f X (X 1/4 Br, I) bonds by the 4-cyanopyridine-boryl radicals in situ generated from 4-cyanopyridine and B(2)pin(2) is the key step. Sequential addition of Rf radicals to alkenes and the selective cross-coupling of the resulting alkyl radicals and 4-cyanopyridineboryl radicals gives alkene difunctionalization products with a quaternary carbon center. This method exhibits a broad substrate scope and good functional group compatibility.

Abstract:The isoperfluoropropyl group ( i -C 3 F 7 ) is an emerging motif in pharmaceuticals, agrichemicals and functional materials. However, isoperfluoropropylated compounds remain largely underexplored, presumably due to the lack of efficient access to these compounds. Herein, we disclose the practical and efficient isoperfluoropropylation of aromatic C-H bonds through the invention of a hypervalent-iodine-based reagent-PFPI reagent, that proceeds via a Ag-X coupling process. The activation of the PFPI reagent without any catalysts or additives was demonstrated in the synthesis of isoperfluoropropylated electron-rich heterocycles, while its activity under photoredox catalysis was shown in the synthesis of isoperfluoropropylated non-activated arenes. Detailed mechanistic experiments and DFT calculations revealed a SET-induced concerted mechanistic pathway in the photoredox reactions. In addition, the unique conformation of i -C 3 F 7 in products, that involved intramolecular hydrogen bond was investigated by X-ray single-crystal diffraction and variable-temperature NMR experiments.
