Abstract:Alloy, alloy! A cheap magnetic Fe-Ni alloy is prepared using a simple method and applied to the direct arylation of unactivated arenes with aryl halides. The catalyst exhibits excellent activity and can be reused at least eight times without a significant loss of catalytic activity.

Abstract:We report a method to conduct one-pot meta cyanation of arenes by iridium-catalyzed C-H borylation and copper-mediated cyanation of the resulting arylboronate esters. This process relies on a method to conduct the cyanation of arylboronic esters, and conditions for this new transformation are reported. Conditions for the copper-mediated cyanation of arylboronic acids are also reported. By the resulting sequence of borylation and cyanation, 1,3-disubstituted and 1,2,3-trisubstituted arenes and heteroarenes containing halide, ketone, ester, amide, and protected alcohol functionalities are converted to the corresponding meta-substituted aryl nitriles. The utility of this methodology is demonstrated through the conversion of a protected 2,6-disubstituted phenol to 4-cyano-2,6-dimethylphenol, which is an intermediate in the synthesis of the pharmaceutical etravirine. The utility of the method is further demonstrated by the conversion of 3-chloro-5-methylbenzonitrile, produced through the one-pot C-H borylation and cyanation sequence, to the corresponding 3,5-disubstituted aldehydes, ketones, amides, carboxylic acids, tetrazoles, and benzylamines.

Abstract:A direct oxidative cyanation of arenes under Fe-II catalysis with 3,5-di(trifluoromethyl)phenyl(cyano)iodonium triflate (DFCT) as the cyanating agent has been developed. The reaction is applicable to wide range of aromatic substrates, including polycyclic structures and heteroaromatic compounds.

Abstract:We herein report the iridium-catalyzed enantioselective C-H borylation of aryl chlorides. A variety of prochiral biaryl compounds could be well-tolerated, affording a vast array of axially chiral biaryls with high enantioselectivities. The current method exhibits a high turnover number (TON) of 7000, which represents the highest in functional-group-directed asymmetric C-H activation. The high TON was attributed to a weak catalyst-substrate interaction that was caused by mismatched chirality between catalyst and substrate. We also demonstrated the synthetic application of the current method by C-B, ortho-C-H, and C-Cl bond functionalization, including programmed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling for the synthesis of axially chiral polyarenes.

Abstract:Herein, catalytic difunctionalization of vinyl arenes is reported using iron salt as a catalyst without ligands. A series of substituted alkylboronic acid esters was obtained as a single regioisomer from vinyl arenes at 50 °C. This multicomponent protocol enabled the formation of C–C and C–B bonds to produce boroalkylated products in a single process. A non‐radical pathway is proposed for the reaction in contrast to the radical pathways of iron‐catalyzed hydroalkylation reactions. The organoboron compounds generated from this reaction were further utilized for diverse functional group conversions.

Abstract:Nickel-catalyzed C-H bond functionalization reactions provide an impressive alternative to those with noble metal catalysts due to their unique reactivity and low cost. However, the regioselective C(sp2)-H borylation reaction of arenes accomplished by nickel catalyst remains limited. We herein disclose a silyl-directed ortho C(sp2)-H borylation of substituted arenes with a Ni(cod)2/PMe3/KHMDS catalyst system. Using readily available starting materials, this protocol provides easy access to ortho-borylated benzylic hydrosilanes bearing flexible substitution patterns. These products can serve as versatile building blocks for the synthesis of sila or sila/borine heterocycles under mild conditions. Control experiments and DFT calculations suggest that a catalytic amount of base prompts the formation of Ni(II)-Bpin-ate complex, likely related to the C(sp2)-H bond activation. This borylation reaction might follow an unusual Ni(II)/Ni(IV) catalytic cycle.

Abstract:A Fe(III)-promoted highly selective photo-oxidation of benzylic C–H bond delivering relative carbonyl products is reported. By altering the concentration of ferric salt, methylarenes can be selectively oxidized under UV irradiation to furnish aromatic aldehydes or acids, respectively. By this protocol, the oxidation of ethylarenes provides the corresponding acetophenones. The reaction is inferred to involve divergent pathways in different concentrations of catalyst for the alternative selectivity between aldehydes and aicds. The reusable catalyst, high conversion and selectivity make this oxidation a green and economic protocol for the synthesis of aromatic carbonyl compounds.

Abstract:An iron-catalyzed hydroboration of vinylcydo-propane with HBpin is first reported for the preparation of valuable homoallylic organoboronic esters. The iron catalysts enable efficient and regioselective C-C cleavage of vinylcyclo-propanes, stereoselectively delivering E-alkenes with good stereospecific selectivity at an allylic position. This protocol exhibits mild conditions with good functional group tolerability. The chiral homoallylic organoboronic esters could be further converted into chiral polysubstituted tetrahydrofuran and tetrahydropyran.

Abstract:Organoboron reagents are important synthetic intermediates that have a key role in the construction of natural products, pharmaceuticals and organic materials1. The discovery of simpler, milder and more efficient approaches to organoborons can open additional routes to diverse substances2-5. Here we show a general method for the directed C-H borylation of arenes and heteroarenes without the use of metal catalysts. C7- and C4-borylated indoles are produced by a mild approach that is compatible with a broad range of functional groups. The mechanism, which is established by density functional theory calculations, involves BBr3 acting as both a reagent and a catalyst. The potential utility of this strategy is highlighted by the downstream transformation of the formed boron species into natural products and drug scaffolds.

Abstract:A novel and efficient Fe-catalyzed direct C-H amination (NH2) of arenes is reported using a new redox-active aminating reagent. The reaction is simple, and can be performed under air, mild, and redox-neutral conditions. This protocol has a broad substrate scope and could be used in the late-stage modification of bioactive compounds. Mechanistic studies demonstrate that a radical pathway could be involved in this transformation.
