Abstract:The first mixed-valent octamolybdate anion [(Mo4Mo4O24)-Mo-V-O-VI](4-), termed chi-octamolybdate due to its shape, was obtained by partial reduction of alpha-(Bu4N)(4)-[Mo8O26] in dry acetonitrile. Single-crystal X-ray structure analysis revealed that the anion includes an unusual (Mo4O8)-O-V cubane-like cluster core, whose four side faces are capped by four MoO4 units to form a crosslike cluster. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and bond valence sum (BVS) calculations were carried out to validate the presence of mixed-valent Mo centers.

Abstract:In the crystal structure of the title compound, {[MnNa(C(6)H(4)NO(3))(3)]·H(2)O}(n), the Mn(II) cation is located on a threefold rotation axis and is chelated by three 2-oxidopyridinium-3-carboxyl-ate (opc) anions in an octa-hedal coordination. The Na(I) cation is located on a threefold rotation axis and is surrounded by six O atoms from three opc anions. The opc anions link the Mn and Na cations, forming a three-dimensional polymeric structure. The uncoordinated water mol-ecule, located on a threefold rotation axis, is equally disordered over two sites. The three-dimensional network is consolidated by N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

Abstract:The redetermined structure of the title compound, [Mn(C4H5NO4)(H2O)(2)](n), including the full hydrogen-bonding scheme, is reported; the original report was by Zhang & Lu [Acta Cryst. (2004). E60, m1189-m119O]. The structure contains polymeric chains of Mn-II cations bridged by iminodiacetate (IDA) dianions. The manganese species assumes a distorted octahedral coordination geometry, formed by two IDA molecules (one tridentate and one monodentate) and two water molecules. The tridentate IDA chelates to the Mn atom in the facial configuration; one chelating five-membered ring is almost planar and the other adopts an envelope configuration. A significant difference of 0.118 (2) Angstrom in Mn-O-carboxyl bond distances is observed within the chelating IDA moiety.

Abstract:The title compound, [CoNa4(C8H3O7S)(2)(H2O)(12)](n), is a three-dimensional coordination polymer bridged by sulfoisophthalate trianions and water molecules. The Co-II atom, located on an inversion centre, is coordinated by two carboxylate groups of the sulfoisophthalate trianions and by four water molecules in a distorted CoO6 octahedral geometry. Two independent Na-I atoms also have a distorted octahedral coordination geometry formed by water, carboxylate O and sulfonate O atoms. An extensive O-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen-bonding network is present in the crystal structure, as well as weak pi-pi stacking [centroid-centroid distance = 3.9553 (11) angstrom].

Abstract:A series of functional cation-regulated isopolymolybdate-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds, Na2H2[Mo4O12(C8H17O5N)2]·10H2O (1), Na2[M(Bis-tris)(H2O)]2[Mo7O24]·10H2O [M = Cu, 2; Ni, 3; Co, 4; Zn, 5; Bis-tris = 2,2-Bis(hydroxymethyl)-2,2',2″-nitrilotriethanol], and (NH4)2[M(Bis-tris)(H2O)]2[Mo7O24]·6H2O (M = Zn, 6; Cu, 7), were synthesized and characterized toward advanced molecular catalyst design. Compound 1 is a covalently bonded adduct, and its self-assembly process can be probed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Compounds 2-7 are polyoxometalate (POM)-based hybrids containing classic heptamolybdate anions and complex cations with Bis-tris ligands. All of these compounds showed remarkable catalytic effects for selective sulfide oxidation. To the best of our knowledge, compound 5 presents the best catalytic activity so far among the reported hybrid materials with common easily synthesized small-molecule POM clusters and also exhibits outstanding reliability. The conclusion of the catalytic effect is drawn from the results that Zn-based compounds have better catalytic effects than other transition-metal-containing compounds and the compound constructed by Na+ has higher catalytic activity than that constructed by NH4+. The mechanism studies show that the improvements of the catalytic performance are caused by the synergy between classic heptamolybdate anions and complex cations. ESI-MS data and UV-vis spectra revealed that the POM anions can form intermediate peroxomolybdenum units during catalytic reaction. Further, the combination of the substrate thioanisole with complex cations was characterized by NMR experiments and UV-vis spectra. Thus, a new synergistic mechanism of anions and cations is proposed in which the activated thioanisole is used as a nucleophile to attack the peroxomolybdenum bonds, and this provides a new strategy in the design of reliable POM-based catalysts.

Abstract:The reduction of an aqueous solution of sodium molybdate by iron powder at low pH value (∼0.83), in the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) ligand, gives the title compound [Fe(H2O)6] [Mo2O4 (EDTA)] · 5H2O 1, which was characterized by elemental analysis, IR and X-ray single crystal diffraction techniques. Compound 1 crystallizes in monoclinic system, space group P21/c, C10 H34 N2FeMo2O23, Mr = 798.12, a = 8.781(1), b = 14.081(1), c = 21.353(1) Å, β = 92.688(1)°, V = 2637.2(3) Å3, Z = 4, Dc = 2.010 g·cm-3, μ = 1.579 mm-1, F(000) = 1608, the final R = 0.0530 and ωR = 0.1271 for 3312 observed reflections. The binuclear oxomolybdenum (V) anion and the six-coordinated Fe(II) cation are linked to infinite three-dimensional network through several hydrogen bonds towards different directions between crystal waters, Fe(II) cation and Mo(V) anion.

Abstract:A new polyoxometalate (POM)-based compound, {[CuI(bipy)]2[MoV2MoVI6O24]}•H2O (bipy = 4,4' -bipyridine) was hydrothermally synthesized, and characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR spectrum, Powder X-Ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and single X-ray diffraction. A structural feature of compound 1 is its unprecedented octamolybdate (Mo8) aggregate chain, which was formed via edge-sharing four distorted [MoO6] octahedra of neighbouring Mo8 clusters. An other fascinating structural features of compound 1 is its high-opened framework with rhombic channels constructed by linkages of Mo8 aggregate chains and Cu-bipy coordinated chains. Furthermore, compound 1 exhibits reversible water sorption capability.

Abstract:The reduction of heptamolybdate in acetic aqueous solution resulted in two polymorphic crystals with composition (NH4)(2)[Y(H2O)(5)](2).[(Mo6Mo4O30)-Mo-VI-O-V(CH3COO)(4)].16H(2)O. This polyanion exhibited a novel ring-like decamolybdate structure. Two Y atoms were captured by the polyanion and covered the central hole of the ring. Mo-V-Mo-V bonds were also found in this mixed-valence compound.

Abstract:Organoammoinium polyoxomolybdate [(enH)(2)(H2Mo6O20)](infinity). was formed in autogeneous pressure at 160 degrees C for 120 h. The colorless crystals of polyoxomolybdate were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystals are in monoclinic system with a space group P2(1)/n and a = 8.0844(16), b = 14.413(3), c = 8.9153(18) angstrom, beta = 98.12(3)degrees, V = 1013.8(4) angstrom(3), Z = 4. The final R = 0.0375, wR = 0.0706 for 2370 reflections [I > sigma(I-0)]. The crystals are constructed by one-dimension infinite inorganic chains with Mo6O20 unit as building block and protonated ethylenediamine cations located in between the inorganic chains. There are many hydrogen bonds between the chains and between the chains and the cations. IR spectrum of the title compound exhibited the vibration absorption of Mo=O, Mo-O-Mo bonds and protonated ethylenediamine cations, and suggests the presence of N-H-O and O-H-O hydrogen bonds. Quantum calculation gives the distribution of charges and the composition of frontier molecular orbits. From the calculation results, it can be inferred that protonation must have occurred on the terminal oxygen atom (O3) due to its smallest charge value and the terminal oxygen atom (O3) forms hydrogen bonds with the O12 atoms of the adjacent chain (2.936 angstrom); and that Mol atom will first receive the reduced electron. The electron transition taking place between HOMO and LUMO belongs basically to O -> Mo charge transfer transition. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A new manganese(II)-peroxomolybdate complex, Cs 4 [Mn(OH 2 ) 2 (Mo 7 O 22 (O 2 ) 2 )]·4.25H 2 O ( Cs-1 ), was isolated from the aqueous solution containing manganses(II) sulfate, sodium heptamolybdate and hydrogen peroxide by the addition of Cs+ salt. Cs-1 was characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry (TG), IR spectroscopy (IR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). The diperoxoheptamolybdate [Mo 7 O 22 (O 2 ) 2 ] 6- units were linked by Mn(II) ions to form one-dimensional infinite chain of [Mn(OH 2 ) 2 (Mo 7 O 22 (O 2 ) 2 )] n 4n- , which represents an unique structure with the coexistence of oxidant-reductant pair of O 2 2- /Mn 2+ . The interconversion between [MnII(OH2)2(Mo7O22(O2)2)]4- and [MnMo9O32]6- in aqueous solution was monitored by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. It indicates that 1 is a key intermediate during the redox cycle of Mn(II) and Mn(IV) in the Mn-polyoxometalate-H 2 O 2 system. In the oxidation process of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine and ortho-phenylenediamine by H 2 O 2 , Cs-1 shows notable activity as enzyme mimetic catalyst.
